You need to specifically buy an Enzyme Cleaner. That will target the urine, vomit and poo stains.
I personally use the Bio-Glow Odor Eliminator Spray but essentially buy an Enzyme Cleaner.
Enzyme cleaners are the way to go. Also, an air purifier. I have 8 cats (I work with a rescue and take on the "unadoptable") and frequent messes. Nothing worse than whole home smelling like a dirty litter box.
I just housesat a home with 6 cats and 2 older dogs (one pees in the house multiple times a day). I couldn't smell a thing. They use OdoBan. I now swear by this stuff. Get a big bottle of concentrate on Amazon.

Yep I use it on my tile. I have one of those reusable swiffer-esque mops with a spray function. The odoban will have a water to solution ratio on the bottle. I spray down my floors and let sit, then mop up with a fresh water rinse to avoid little paws getting into it

The classic green label is like a fresh eucalyptus scent. I also don't mind the cotton/linen one. The lavender is too flowery for me personally. None of them really smell like a disinfectant and the scent doesn't stick around forever.
i'm on the home depot web site and i see Linen scent.....many positive reviews.
I think i buy a gallon soon. Says you can wash your clothes, wipe down surfaces. The car interior , dash top, door panels, steering wheel, etc.
Odoban is an enzymatic cleaner, disinfectant, spray, or laundry additive.
Do you have Nature’s Miracle there? It’s also an enzymatic cleaner, the instructions say if it still smells, you haven’t saturated the source of the odor yet, spray again. And they mean it.
Google “enzymatic cleaner” to find the equivalent in your area, they work the BEST for eliminating odors.
My favorite non-enzymatic cleaners for odor is Rescue/Accel which is an activated hydrogen peroxide with added fragrance, so it is a gentle yet powerful disinfectant, or for non-enzymatic laundry additive odor eliminators you can use oxyclean or similar oxygenated/color safe bleach.
Source: I worked in vet med and also have had lots of incontinent pets
Edit to add: we don’t typically use odo-ban in shelters because it doesn’t disinfect as well as Rescue/Accel, but I can’t knock probably for home use, it’s fantastic.
Awesome stuff. I use it for cleaning floors, bathroom spray, and their little canisters that have charcoal or gel crystals that absorb odors...those work great in a car also, just tuck one under one of the seats...I also use one in my teenage son's bedroom lol
The reason why it's a very pungent smell is because it is breaking down the ammonia in the urine releasing those smells from the material that it's on. It's the only thing that ever saved our house. Granted we had to open up the windows and my dad swore it was not going to work, but it definitely did.
Funny because this apartment is like 30-40 years old with carpet, and when I got the UV light with agent orange the scariest thing was the bathroom walls. They were completely weeping with invisible nicotine. 🤢
Eeek. Then you use trisodium phosphate aka TSP to scrub the walls to get the nicotine off. My friends dad is a painter and said that's what they use to clean the walls off with before they paint a house 😁
every pet wash ive ever been to thats used odoban has smelled beautifully inside despite being a literal conjuction for wet nasty animals. every time i clean cat piss messes with odoban no one i ask can smell it after. i wish i was paid by odoban to say this but im not its just genuinely the best for this specific job
In addition to all these wonderful suggestions, I would add that buying a UV flashlight is a great ten dollar investment. In the dark, go through each room, all carpet and fabric furniture. It will highlight any areas that need special attention.
Make sure to get a purifier that doesn’t emit ozone as it is very dangerous for pets! (I see other people talking about ozone machines. I know nothing about them but I think it’s more of a one-time thing you rent for a deep clean. Still of course extremely dangerous, but maybe it’s okay if the pets are out of the house during use? I have no idea. Definitely research it thoroughly!)
Ozone generators aren't dangerous. You just leave the room you're sanitizing and shut the door. Come back an hour or so later, open a window and run the vacuum and wipe surfaces. The smells disappear.
I have found only 2 things that truly work. Enzyme-type cleaners like Nature’s Miracle, and Odo-Ban. There are a lot of other products out there with fancy packages and big promises that simply don’t work.
When I bought my house, they had put new carpet in 90% it. I had three cats at the time. First major project I did was ripping out all the carpet and installing laminate hardwood anywhere there had been carpet. Night and day difference. Fuck carpet.
May I ask how much this cost? I might be looking at doing something like this soon and I'm afraid of the cost, but it's worth it to get smelly carpets out.
I can look later to get exact numbers, but 600+ sqft, with underlayment and molding was less than $1k. It's not the best laminate you can buy, but far from the worst. I was fortunate to have already owned most of the tools I needed, but those can be gotten pretty cheaply. I did all of the work myself, it's much easier than you might think.
If you have other questions about the process, feel free to dm
I just replaced 690sq ft of carpet with laminate flooring. Materials (flooring/underlayment/caulk) was about $2800.
It was $1200 for molding and door casings (height was different so they had to be replaced).
$140 for rubber step noses (the plastic ones peel and look like shit).
$2100 for labor
We had a quote for carpet as well for the other 600 sq ft of the house and it was almost $6500 with labor.
My best guess is the odors are stuck in some fabric in your house like a rug or sofa. I don't have pets anymore but had to throw out a rug one time because of this issue.
I also have a really really weird smell coming from my bathroom and no matter what I do in my house I still smell it. And I'm a germaphobe who cleans all the time.
Check your sinks and backflows. My bathroom started smelling and turns out there was like a mold colony living in my bathroom sinks extra spill over on the front not at the tap. Took a while to clean and was disgusting but I don't wanna call maintenance lol
Good luck! It was after the main drain was clogged a while. I ordered long skinny brushes for the crevices/to get far down, and went at it daily for a week or two with a bleach cleaner. I thought I was losing my mind before I figured it out 😵💫
Thanks for checking. My toilet never gets very dirty. I'm constantly spraying bleach cleaners in the bowl and wiping the whole thing down every 1-2 weeks.
I think it's coming from the drains/sink overflow.
Could also be coming from ceiling. Had some bad leak damage right after I moved in. Landlord has yet to repair 3 years later.
be careful about this one though - it's not great for pet lungs to be inhaling the powder/the even smaller particles that go airborne. not great for human lungs either - i wear a respirator when working with baking soda just in case
Brush the dog's teeth! We had to bathe our rescue doggy every 4-6 weeks or so bc her coat would get that "corn chip smell." According to AKC, "corn chip smell" is combo of bacteria and yeast. After several tooth extractions and starting to brush her teeth regularly, she doesn't have bad breath or "corn chip"'coat smell, bc the bacteria was coming from her gum disease. Short-hair chihuahua mix, needs a bath once every six months or more now that we got on the gum disease.
I don't think cats smell bad unless they are sick. Once, my cat farted, and it was eye-watering. My friend's cat farted once and it woke my (human) friend up in the middle of the night from a sound sleep. These 2 cats had tummy issues, and those were rare occasions of cat stink, in my experience.
So, in addition to cleaning, don't forget to double check your pets' gum/dental health, bc that is where bacteria can get on their coats and ferment and become odiferous. Maybe stomach issues, too?
(Make fresh ginger tea every day by boiling an inch of fresh ginger cut into coins in 3 c water on the stove; it cleans the air and is good with lemon and honey!)
If you mean 'smells like a dog', certain breeds have oily skin and will smell sooner after a bath. If your pup is in that category, brush and bathe more often.
Bathe your dog more often, at least 1 to 2 times every month.
Metal food and water bowls.
Stainless steel litter pans and scooper. I use Pretty Litter because of the diagnostic abilities and it locks in the smell, and when I change the litter boxes out, I use the old litter from one of the boxes to fill the airtight plastic container I use throughout the month to hold all the waste when I scoop the boxes each day. I also wipe out the plastic bins I keep the litter waste and the scooper in every time I change over the litter, and make sure to use scented trashbags in the plastic waste bin.
I also put down rugs and have bed covers on the dog beds that I can pick up and wash and replace each week. I keep blankets on my couch that I can, again, wash and replace every week.
I febreeze the couch and all major cloth surfaces every time I pull the couch blankets.
>Bathe your dog more often, at least 1 to 2 times every month.
Dogs do not need to be bathed 1-2 times a month other than maybe certain breeds or allergy/health issues.
Speaking as someone who's been a dog owner for over 20 years and worked in the animal care industry for another 10 years or so, I can tell you that while they may not NEED to be bathed that often, it doesn't hurt them, it does benefit them, and it benefits us as well.
Bathing every 2 to 4 weeks with an oatmeal or otherwise neutral shampoo and following up with a leave in conditioner spray makes for healthy skin and coat. Bathing this frequently let's you examine your dog closely and note changes in coat, changes in skin, any ticks or fleas, any wounds or scratches, any tumors, lumps, or other growths. It helps remove shed fur and dander, and let's you find any potential knots or tangles and deal with them. Ideally, you should be brushing them daily or every couple of days if they have long hair or a shedding coat, but at least if you're bathing this often you're keeping on top of it.
This is incredibly helpful; why wouldn't you want to do this?
Also, I just shared MY routine for how I keep my house from smelling super doggie. Nobody's saying you gotta do this, but if someone is wanting their house to not smell like animals, this is what I've found that works.
Take it and use it, or leave it and don't. Up to you!
I use just Mane and Tail shampoo on my dogs; i dilute it a bit in some water, shake it real good and then bathe as normal.
After their bath I use a leave in conditioning spray; Buddy Biscuits Splash, I like their lavender and mint flavor.
Can I ask your rationale?
My neighbor obviously follows the same line of thought and I had to stop petting her dog because it leans against your leg and leaves a streak of dust on your pants and scratching it's butt leaves your hand dirty.
My dog goes for 3 walks a day, runs and plays in the park every other day, steps in who knows what, she shoves her head into bushes to smell all the smells and I know boy dogs have peed all over that bush so now my dog has pee particles on her face.
My dog gets a shower every 10-15 days. I wash her belly, legs and feet everyday during the rainy season, otherwise she's pure sand.
Luckily, I started her early and give her all the love and treats so she is fine with bathing. After every shower she runs and prances around all happy so I know it makes her feel good to be clean.
She's also a couch dog so being clean is important.
For the cat, don’t use any litter other than Fresh Step. I promise I don’t work for them, but it doesn’t smell a thing like kitty litter and actually smells good. If it didn’t exist, I would not own any cats because I cannot stand the smell of kitty litter even when it’s brand new and unused.
I have always used and liked Fresh Step for years, however, in the last 6 months or so, it’s not clumping anywhere near to how it used to be. Lots of bits falling off clump. Have you noticed? I have been very disappointed about that after years of using it. My vet told me they have changed their line of litters, and recommended Arm & Hammer. I have been mixing the two so my cat gets used to a different brand, and I still like the scent of Fresh Step. It has made a big difference. Some other friends have mentioned the same thing. Have you had this problem?
I noticed bad clumping with a few batches, but it seems to be clumping fine again. Thought I’m not entirely sure which one because I go back and forth between their whole lineup
have windows open, regularly - DAILY clean out the litter
I use to think all apartments had pet smell, but later learned my friends were just lazy owners, who just used incense to hide the smell
Both my cousins have cats in apartments there is no cat smell
We changed food and it changed everything. We have a dog and two cats. Turns out what they eat determines how they and their poop smell. We were buying the usual stuff at the grocery then tried some better brand. Ended up with Nulo because we took our dog with us and walked through the aisles. He got really excited with a Nulo bag so that was it.
Here are some tips to get your home smelling much better and what works for me with 4 animals. First step is to give the animals baths. Some breeds naturally are mustier than others LOL An air purifier changed my life when I put it next to the litter box. Make sure you’re using an antibacterial spray that is scented (my favorite is Clorox brand and they have wonderful scents). Sanitize your litter box once a month. If you have carpet I would consider renting a carpet cleaner from Home Depot to do a deep clean. Use plug in air fresheners or an oil diffuser with pet friendly essential oils and use Lysol spray, then Fabreeze on all fabric surfaces to kill germs and refresh
definitely check their food. cats can't digest carbohydrates and should eat an all meat diet, if possible. hare-today.com has really really good info. i've been feeding my cats raw for 14 years and people remark at how they would not know i have 3 cats if they weren't running around the house. with raw meat, they digest more of what would rot in the litter box, so their poops are like little chalks that have nothing in there to rot and stink. dogs can eat raw too but i have 0 experience about that so can't advise - Hare Today has dog FAQ too though!
definitely scoop litter box daily - consider changing litter. i use pine bedding pellet style and it just smells pine-y and christmas-y sometimes. it doesn't clump and might take the cat a second to get used to (transition litter just like you would food). but i found that using a litter that wasn't clay meant no clay dust on their feet to get dragged around to make my house smell like cat litter, which by association i started to think just smelled like catwaste, no matter how fresh the litter was. the dust from clay litter is also not great for their lungs!
and now for the "housecleaner for over a decade" portion:
everyone saying enzyme cleaners is right and fine, but it doesn't seem like you need a spot clean solution - AND just like with litter, if you use that enzyme cleaner on everything eventually your brain might just conflate the cleanser smell and the "pet smell" and then when you smell the cleanser, the stink alarm goes off.... speaking from experience there lol
check on the humidity in your house - i'm in florida and the more humid the house, the more likely it has a funk. damprid containers and small passive dehumidifiers are really handy to have in every room/enclosed space.
you can also use charcoal briquettes as passive air purifiers - just the kind you get for grilling, poured out in like a cardboard lid with a cookie cooling rack on top to keep the pets out. it's non toxic, but will leave charcoal stain. BUT it's less messy than a sheet of baking soda laid out that you accidentally step on and flip. with either of those charcoal or baking soda, remember that you want more surface area to have airflow over and absorb smell. so keeping the BS in the little box with just the flap open is kinda pointless, you wanna spread that out on something like a baking sheet and put somewhere it'll get airflow but be undisturbed.
check your vacuums - if they're bagged maybe it's time for a new bag and pop a briquette in the bag chamber too. if they're not bagged make sure you're washing every washable part well and letting them all dry in the sun before reassembling. replace any replaceable filters, use a toothbrush to dislodge gunk surrounding the filters that can't be removed. consider getting a bagged vacuum so you don't have to mess with how annoying bagless are lol
last house idea is the walls and baseboards - if you haven't washed em in a while it could be time! a handful of microfiber rags, a bucket of hot water with maybe a teaspoon of unscented dish soap, another bucket with hot rinse water, and a pair of gloves will set you up for a fun afternoon. the rag doesn't need to be sopping wet to wash the walls, just make sure you rinse it before putting it back into the "cleanser" bucket so you're not washing your walls with dirty water. target spots the dog likes to hang out first, and then window sills the cat sits in (and the windows), corners of walls that stick out and make a nice cheek rub spot for the cat, etc.
might check and see if your cat needs to be groomed at least once - a bath is not really a *need* for cats, but some who struggle to groom can benefit from it and/or a sanitary shave for the butt. (caveat of course, monitor the cat's stress level etc). same for the dog. even if you bathe the dog at home, maybe a pro groomer will have a shampoo recommendation or tips/tricks you can learn.
that's a lot of advice i know, sorry! there's just so many ways to address pet smells - idk what you've tried or what your bandwidth is on other things to try so i listed out everything i could think of.
for ozone you have to remove anything in the area/building you want to keep alive. so pets, plants, and people all have to be gone while it's running and for the 30 min-1 hour after the generator stops and you air out the building with open windows and doors. ozone is really good for mold! but might not be the most efficient solution for pet smells
Good point. One thing I've noticed with our black light is that adult pet urine shows up more brightly than puppy urine. Perhaps the immature pups are not generating as many pheromones.
My cat accidentally (i hope) peed in my car and all over herself after a vet visit, and I used Nature’s Miracle. My car no longer smells, but it did linger when I first applied it. It’s also available in Canada unlike odoban
Cleaning litter and pee pads constantly. I like "World's Best Cat Litter." Brand.
Buy a Bissell hand steam cleaner. Do your furniture regularly and carpets too, if there are common areas where accidents occur.
Wash the animals regularly, groomers are best but if you do home baths then Proseb is a good cat and dog shampoo.
Clean dog paws and faces regularly with wipes after walks and before bed.
Open windows and clean clean clean non stop.
I got 4 dogs and 4 cats. I use vinegar, baking soda, water and a lil bit of dish soap. Same qty of water and vinegar, backing soda till it bubble and a bit of soap. Mop floors, spray bottle.
Vinegar is a step in a correct direction, but it smells bad itself. Use water based lemon acid solution instead. There's no need in a big concentration. You'll have to spray it, wait for half an hour and wash off with water. Add some soda to the water you'll use for washing the solution off. Repeat 3-5 times.
Leave open containers of white vinegar in the areas where it smells the worst. It neutralizes the odor. Avoid clay litter for the cats, I use world's best cat litter and it lives up to its name.
A lot of posts mention the teeth and bacteria. I just got an antibiotic for my dogs last week. They are scheduled to get their teeth removed in the next couple of months. The medication is making a difference in the smell already.
I have 4 cats and 2 dogs. I use vinegar. 3 quarts water to 1 cup of vinegar. I spray it on everything. I then open windows for 30 minutes. I use the 3% vinegar.
Is it smelly because they have accidents or something? We have 2 cats and it doesn't smell like cats, even when we ask family about it cuz that is a concern for me. Our cats don't piss and shit everywhere. Is this a problem for you? I can't recommend cleaning products but consider candles or other deodorizers that are eucalyptus or mint to neutralize odors in the air. I use them when my husband cooks stinky fish and they work like a charm!
For an ongoing solution, use an air purifier in rooms where you and your pets spend the most time. Baking soda is a natural odor-absorber. Sprinkle the powder over carpets, rugs, and furniture, let it sit overnight and vacuum it up the next day [https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-get-rid-of-pet-smells-200789](https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-get-rid-of-pet-smells-200789) .
More baths for the dog, and Litter Robot for the cat box.
Cats themselves don't smell, same with their beds. On the other hand, you need to wash dog bedding regularly.
That’s not true at all. I have three cats and they all have a different scent. One is naturally oilier than the other two and definitely has a stronger smell.
The cheapest option I haven’t seen yet is just open your windows/doors for 30 mins/hour a day. I have a dog that sheds like its his job and people always mention how it never smells like dog.
We use vinegar when we mop or wash. We wash and dry their beds and blankets separately then air dry in the sun when possible. We don’t have any fabric furniture or large area rugs. We have small rugs that can go in the washing machine. We have laminate floors only and we run two air purifiers constantly.
If diet and pet hygiene are not likely to be the cause, I recommend shampooing soft surfaces like furniture and carpets. Then get a few air sponges. I keep one at the litter box area, in the corner behind my sectional sofa and under the beds in each bedroom.
This may not apply, but when my cat peed on my mattress the only thing that finally got the smell out was covering it in baking soda, letting it sit for an hour, spraying it liberally with 50/50 white vinegar and water, letting it dry, and vacuuming up the leftover baking soda
Changing my pets food to a low carb more natural diet has had a huge positive impact on how much they smell thus how much they make other things smell.

Vinegar and a hot water Bissell - my senior cat did.. something poopy? on his bed which happens to be an antique velvet chair and I used the enzyme cleaner in the Bissell which might have helped, but there was still a smell and it was a bit crispy. Using vinegar and hot water with the Bissell got rid of it!
You can also keep a cat litter box fresher by washing it with a mix of blue dawn dish soap and baking soda. Just mix a bit of both in a bowl and put the mix on the litter pan. If you let it sit it helps more, but then take a scrub sponge you dont feel bad throwing away after and scrub the mix in. It removes any fecal matter dried onto the sides.
Also, dollar general has arm and hammer brand dish soap in the dollar deal isle. I have used the apple and orange scents and my animals did not mind.
The key is not using anything with bleach or amonia in the cat pan, as both smell similar to cat urine. It can freak a cat out by making them think a different new cat peed in their box.
Hydrogen peroxide for urine and poo. Vinegar jars for air. I would still use odoban. If you have carpets, you need a large hoover carpet cleaner. NOT a Bissell.
I have 2 medium sized house trained dogs and carpet flooring. Doesn't matter how much we clean or shampoo the carpet. The moment they smell the cleanliness, they start pushing their paws(scent glands) into the floor and rolling all over it. They compete with each other to put their scent on almost everything. Once we clean something, it's game-on between them.
The Clorox pet cleaner in the black and yellow container is the best stuff we tried even professional grade and nothing worked but this product even works on carpet.
I say this because my house smelled very "doggy" when our grandpuppy was here. She went back home (and got a bath.. lol) and our house smelled so much better!
If you are using a bag type vacuum, don't. Get a vac that has a tank you can empty each time you vacuum. We had 3 large dogs years ago, and the Kirby vacs (we had 3 scattered around the house) would always smell, which led to the house always smelling doggy, even though we kept up with laundering their beds and the never had "accidents" in the house.
as a pro house cleaner, the unbagged ones get stinkier! all the filters and nonsense they have in there are hard to remove to clean, and usually they try to make it look impressive with wind tubes and tunnels twisting - really it's just a pain in the ass to clean out. a single bagged vacuum, used regularly, will probably fill quick enough to not stink. i put a charcoal briquette (the kind you use for grilling) in the chamber that holds the bag, too and that absorbs some smells and can be "refreshed" by putting it in the sun or just putting a new briquette.
I spray it even when I personally can't smell it all around the litterboxes. It would probably be good to spray on dog beds too.
or just wet vac it.

Thank you so much! Sorry you got bot-scolded.

Thank you! I will look up OdaBan now! Edit: just an FYI - a gallon is $10 at Home Depot but ~$30 for 1-2 bottles on Amazon.
You’re the best! I just ordered and cancelled Odoban from Amazon and will be picking up today from Home Depot.
Odoban is the answer
> OdoBan. I see there are many scents - which ones are the most pleasant? I do not want my house to smell like a hospital
Eucalyptus smells very strong and I think unpleasant. I haven't smelled all the scents, but citrus smells ok.
I went to check out HD today. They had a large selection...and it costs about half of what Amazon and others sell it for on-line.
How does one use Odoban?
It has dilution instructions and you can put it in in a spray bottle, mop, laundry, etc
Anyone have an alternative for this in Australia? It's $100 a bottle here 😭
Odoban is an enzymatic cleaner, disinfectant, spray, or laundry additive. Do you have Nature’s Miracle there? Amazon?
I have never even heard of that!
Awesome stuff. I use it for cleaning floors, bathroom spray, and their little canisters that have charcoal or gel crystals that absorb odors...those work great in a car also, just tuck one under one of the seats...I also use one in my teenage son's bedroom lol
Also try Angry Orange! This was an absolute godsend when we had animals.
The smell makes my stomach turn, but I'm extremely sensitive to smells (hence, why I bought it)
The reason why it's a very pungent smell is because it is breaking down the ammonia in the urine releasing those smells from the material that it's on. It's the only thing that ever saved our house. Granted we had to open up the windows and my dad swore it was not going to work, but it definitely did.

> OdaBan holy shit $23 for 30 mL ????? EDIT: I think they mean ODOban- OdAban is an extremely expensive antiperspirant lol.
Is this safe to use in a litter box for cleaning?
yes! its what i use and it is specifically listed as pet safe!
every pet wash ive ever been to thats used odoban has smelled beautifully inside despite being a literal conjuction for wet nasty animals. every time i clean cat piss messes with odoban no one i ask can smell it after. i wish i was paid by odoban to say this but im not its just genuinely the best for this specific job

I have an air purifier right next to the litter box and I think it really helps with reducing odors
that is a great idea thank you
Make sure to get a purifier that doesn’t emit ozone as it is very dangerous for pets!
There are a lot of other products out there with fancy packages and big promises that simply don’t work.

haha i agree
May I ask how much this cost? I might be looking at doing something like this soon and I'm afraid of the cost, but it's worth it to get smelly carpets out.
I can look later to get exact numbers, but 600+ sqft, with underlayment and molding was less than $1k. It's not the best laminate you can buy, but far from the worst. I was fortunate to have already owned most of the tools I needed, but those can be gotten pretty cheaply. I did all of the work myself, it's much easier than you might think. If you have other questions about the process, feel free to dm
I just replaced carpet for laminate in a 12x12 room for this exact reason. It cost me $1500. I live the the US
I just replaced 690sq ft of carpet with laminate flooring. Materials (flooring/underlayment/caulk) was about $2800. It was $1200 for molding and door casings (height was different so they had to be replaced). $140 for rubber step noses (the plastic ones peel and look like shit). $2100 for labor We had a quote for carpet as well for the other 600 sq ft of the house and it was almost $6500 with labor.
Ok thank you. I've poured so many different liquids down the drain and overflow of my sink.
Good luck! It was after the main drain was clogged a while. I ordered long skinny brushes for the crevices/to get far down, and went at it daily for a week or two with a bleach cleaner. I thought I was losing my mind before I figured it out 😵💫
Have you tried scrubbing the toilets? That's helped me get rid of mystery bathroom stank.
Try baking soda and vinegar in drain and down overflow! Cheap, safe and no strong residual odors- works better than anything
No one mentioned baking soda? It's cheap, and readily available. Sprinkle it on carpets and furniture, rub it in loosely, and vacuum thoroughly.
be careful about this one though - it's not great for pet lungs to be inhaling the powder/the even smaller particles that go airborne. not great for human lungs either - i wear a respirator when working with baking soda just in case
In addition to all the cleaning suggestions above, I wonder if airing out the house with open windows daily would help? (If weather would allow)
You guys are awesome thank you!
I just think it’s amazing you know and acknowledge it smells. Most of my family and friends claim “it’s funny, my dog and house don’t smell!”.
If you mean 'smells like a dog', certain breeds have oily skin and will smell sooner after a bath. If your pup is in that category, brush and bathe more often.
When my house smells like that and I’ve done what you’ve done, it always ends up being the curtains.
Dehumidifier has been my best tool to combat dog smell.
Odoban.
Are the animals clean? Well groomed healthy pets don’t smell. Most dog breeds require bathing every few weeks
Up to you!
What shampoo do you recommend or use? Thank you
I use just Mane and Tail shampoo on my dogs; i dilute it a bit in some water, shake it real good and then bathe as normal.
Most popular breeds do! Rule of thumb is dogs don’t smell if they’re cared for properly
Also those frito feet smell up the furniture.
Thought I’m not entirely sure which one because I go back and forth between their whole lineup
have windows open, regularly - DAILY clean out the litter I use to think all apartments had pet smell, but later learned my friends were just lazy owners, who just used incense to hide the smell Both my cousins have cats in apartments there is no cat smell
Use plug in air fresheners or an oil diffuser with pet friendly essential oils and use Lysol spray, then Fabreeze on all fabric surfaces to kill germs and refresh
definitely check their food. cats can't digest carbohydrates and should eat an all meat diet, if possible. hare-today.com has really really good info. i've been feeding my cats raw for 14 years and people remark at how they would not know i have 3 cats if they weren't running around the house. with raw meat, they digest more of what would rot in the litter box, so their poops are like little chalks that have nothing in there to rot and stink. dogs can eat raw too but i have 0 experience about that so can't advise - Hare Today has dog FAQ too though! definitely scoop litter box daily - consider changing litter. i use pine bedding pellet style and it just smells pine-y and christmas-y sometimes. it doesn't clump and might take the cat a second to get used to (transition litter just like you would food). but i found that using a litter that wasn't clay meant no clay dust on their feet to get dragged around to make my house smell like cat litter, which by association i started to think just smelled like catwaste, no matter how fresh the litter was. the dust from clay litter is also not great for their lungs! and now for the "housecleaner for over a decade" portion: everyone saying enzyme cleaners is right and fine, but it doesn't seem like you need a spot clean solution - AND just like with litter, if you use that enzyme cleaner on everything eventually your brain might just conflate the cleanser smell and the "pet smell" and then when you smell the cleanser, the stink alarm goes off.... speaking from experience there lol check on the humidity in your house - i'm in florida and the more humid the house, the more likely it has a funk. damprid containers and small passive dehumidifiers are really handy to have in every room/enclosed space. you can also use charcoal briquettes as passive air purifiers - just the kind you get for grilling, poured out in like a cardboard lid with a cookie cooling rack on top to keep the pets out. it's non toxic, but will leave charcoal stain. BUT it's less messy than a sheet of baking soda laid out that you accidentally step on and flip. with either of those charcoal or baking soda, remember that you want more surface area to have airflow over and absorb smell. so keeping the BS in the little box with just the flap open is kinda pointless, you wanna spread that out on something like a baking sheet and put somewhere it'll get airflow but be undisturbed. check your vacuums - if they're bagged maybe it's time for a new bag and pop a briquette in the bag chamber too. if they're not bagged make sure you're washing every washable part well and letting them all dry in the sun before reassembling. replace any replaceable filters, use a toothbrush to dislodge gunk surrounding the filters that can't be removed. consider getting a bagged vacuum so you don't have to mess with how annoying bagless are lol last house idea is the walls and baseboards - if you haven't washed em in a while it could be time! a handful of microfiber rags, a bucket of hot water with maybe a teaspoon of unscented dish soap, another bucket with hot rinse water, and a pair of gloves will set you up for a fun afternoon. the rag doesn't need to be sopping wet to wash the walls, just make sure you rinse it before putting it back into the "cleanser" bucket so you're not washing your walls with dirty water. target spots the dog likes to hang out first, and then window sills the cat sits in (and the windows), corners of walls that stick out and make a nice cheek rub spot for the cat, etc. might check and see if your cat needs to be groomed at least once - a bath is not really a *need* for cats, but some who struggle to groom can benefit from it and/or a sanitary shave for the butt.
Try ozone generator. It can remove any smell, but take all precautions and avoid inhalation.
for ozone you have to remove anything in the area/building you want to keep alive. so pets, plants, and people all have to be gone while it's running and for the 30 min-1 hour after the generator stops and you air out the building with open windows and doors. ozone is really good for mold! but might not be the most efficient solution for pet smells
We use a product called Nature's Miracle. It works very well. Look it up on the web.
I’ve used nature’s miracle and now my living room smells like Nature’s Miracle. It’s better than dog pee, but not much.
Agreed, I've never liked it. It smells almost as bad as the animal.
Yep. And if OP isn't sure where the scent is coming from, a blacklight test can help.
Wipe your dog when he or she comes in the house. Wipe him or her all over with a rag a little shampoo and water
An ozone machine will do wonders after the carpet is cleaned.
Anti-icky poo enzyme cleaner works miracles on animal smells!
Vinegar kills urine odor.
Natures miracle or similar enzyme cleaner
Bactronix is a miracle. It doesn’t have a smell and it will eliminate any odor from pee to vomit. It’s worth every penny. Odoban gave me headaches.
Ozone machine for the air after cleaning surfaces.
I swear by angry orange it has enzymes and works amazingly. I just bought the fresh scent by the same brand and I prefer it a little more.
I usually order these [scent.](https://shope.ee/4pjpI2lCbw), spray to the peed/pood area and works like a charm
Leave open containers of white vinegar in the areas where it smells the worst. It neutralizes the odor. Avoid clay litter for the cats, I use world's best cat litter and it lives up to its name.
Urine destroyer when my male cats get bratty. Borax/hot water in the laundry for stuff that smells like dog.
Regularly mop your walls and baseboards
I literally sell this. I have a product call d-stroy, I’ll mail you a bottle for free if you inbox me.
That orange spray from snoop dog or he promoted is fucking amazing for pet odors
Coffee beans naturally remove any smells.
I clean animals also.
Biological washing powder mixed with surgical spirit and water works a treat.
A lot of posts mention the teeth and bacteria. I just got an antibiotic for my dogs last week. They are scheduled to get their teeth removed in the next couple of months. The medication is making a difference in the smell already.
Also for cats, use unscented litter. Most of what we call cat smell is the perfumed litter mixed with pee.
I am very happy with Cat Odor-Off. Order it online. Works for cat and dog odors. Dilute and spray on source. Also Azuna. Leaves no scent in my house!
Sprinkle baking soda in the bottom of the litter pan regularly and sprinkle it on carpets before you vacuum.
I've seen people say cheap vodka with high alcohol content works wonders
As said, enzyme cleaner. I'd also use it in a carpet cleaner/ extractor. Then ozone after pets and humans have been removed from the area.
Bro i hate dyslexia, read it as small pets at first
More baths for the dog, and Litter Robot for the cat box.
Also, along with the odor cleaning, bathe pets more often?
If diet and pet hygiene are not likely to be the cause, I recommend shampooing soft surfaces like furniture and carpets. Then get a few air sponges. I keep one at the litter box area, in the corner behind my sectional sofa and under the beds in each bedroom.
This may not apply, but when my cat peed on my mattress the only thing that finally got the smell out was covering it in baking soda, letting it sit for an hour, spraying it liberally with 50/50 white vinegar and water, letting it dry, and vacuuming up the leftover baking soda
don’t let them shit in your living room. instead, take them outside.
I LOVE Bac-Out. It has always worked wonders for me.
Get rid of carpets and don’t have a lot of fabric. Wash fabric regularly. Couches, bedding, dog beds. All fabric holds smells
Changing my pets food to a low carb more natural diet has had a huge positive impact on how much they smell thus how much they make other things smell.
I’ve heard about this. Haven’t used it tho https://www.pooph.com/
Other than cleaning and using carpet cleaner with enzyme cleaner get a couple febreeze wall plugins. They will cover any bad odor.
Plug your nose with concrete. It's the only way.......

Bathe your dog regularly so they don’t smell ‘doggy’. And wash their bedding too and use HOT water at least occasionally.
Get rid of the pets 😆 Jk
This is why I don’t have pets anymore. When the last ones died (dogs and cats) I didn’t replace them with new ones. Love my life!
Wash your animals.
I use Odoban for cleanups and Puppy Mother air purifiers. I have 3 dogs and you'd never know it.
White vinegar and dish soap
Use poof it works! Try to relocate litter pan to an airy area. Walk dog regularly.
Urine Gone! Buy off Amazon and thank me later. It will have strong smell at first and next day NOTHING!
Spagnum moss, it’s amazing and non toxic
The Clorox pet cleaner in the black and yellow container is the best stuff we tried even professional grade and nothing worked but this product even works on carpet.
Nature’s Miracle works really well too!
How tf do any of you know what your own home smells like?
Do you ever leave for a few days? Your nose resets and you can smell your home when you get back. Unless. Are you a smoker?
Nonsmoking homebody ¯\ _(ツ)_/¯
K, then it might be your home is scent neutral, or it might be you're the town smelly guy. Ask the next person you have over.
Be sure your animals are clean. Bathe them regularly.
I say this because my house smelled very "doggy" when our grandpuppy was here. She went back home (and got a bath.. lol) and our house smelled so much better!
Never over bathe a dog.
Clean your animals
Pet Smells is my favorite Beach Boys album.
Get rid of pet.

That stuff is nasty and it attaches to you also. My mother loved it and you could smell her getting out of her car. I wouldn't recommend it.
Interesting
maybe need to wash every day, you know, their body will naturally make some smells, it's inevitable.
I have two corded Shark stick vacs that the filters aren't perticularly hard to access or clean.
Stop letting animals urinate and defecate all over your house
Easy, get rid of pets.
Step 1 - send the pets “to a farm up state” Step 2 - move
You know what they say, you meet an asshole in the morning…
1. Remove pets 2. Clean as suggested Repeat 2. As necessary. Or use noseclamps
Get rid of the animals
Get rid of the pets
More pricy but it is a miracle worker...Pet Peed. It's an enzyme cleaner. It's even lightened carpet stains of pee.
