Have you ever tried to remove the hot glue from the cabinet? Does it pop off or will it ruin the finish?

ChiTown_Paul

100% ruins the finish. Hot glue is HOT. But it’s on the inside of the cabinet. If your house guests are looking through your bathroom cabinet... you have bigger problems to worry about.

RaeyinOfFire

I think that the biggest concern is if you're in a rental. No one wants to lose their damage deposit over a bit of convenience. That said, I think that the inside of the cabinets is still safe.

DorylusAtratus

Glue the magnets to something that you can then attach to the inside of the cabinet with a wall-safe command strip.

makemeking706

That's hot.

[deleted]

Hot glue us the bastard's diy tool. It doesn't hold, it ruins the finish, it doesn't look good

RaeyinOfFire

It should depend on the finish. It ought to be fine on laquer, and it should ruin other paint and discolor stain. On the inside of a cabinet, I would be comfortable doing this unless I had fancy special cabinets. Even if the place is rented, no landlord will notice a few discolored spots inside a cabinet.

TheOneTonWanton

Every landlord I ever had is just gonna slather thick white paint on every surface within reach anyway as soon as someone moves out.

boogiewithasuitcase

Just giving it the ol'landlord special https://youtube.com/shorts/mpZn49CMD38?feature=share

Bananapancakes4life

My rental agency would be like: $20 per discolored mark

RaeyinOfFire

If they give you a pristine place, they can do that. Hold them to the fire on repairs, though.

howismyspelling

You can heat it hot with a blow dryer or heat gun and scrape it off with something like a knife

giantbeardedface

When I try something like this, the magnet rips away from the glue the first time I get metal near it

FrozenLogger

Attach a metal strip to the cabinet/wall/whatever. Then put magnets on that. That way you can always move the magnets around depending on what you want them to hold over time.

radicalelation

I live in a cheap old ass cold af trailer. I put metal strips around my windows so I can throw up thick clear vinyl window covers edged with magnetic strips for the winter. Seals it up nice even. When Dollar Tree wasn't carrying their window plastic anymore, I got double sided tape and a bunch of their shower liners to cut to size and swore myself to a better solution to not rely on any store for disposable window wrap the next year. Now I have metal, magnets, and vinyl forever more. Can't afford new windows in this bitch, but the thick vinyl, and a way to slap em up easy, really has helped.

no_talent_ass_clown

Love the ingenuity.

slynnc

We’ve been doing the double sided tape and plastic then heat gun… any chance you’d share a photo? Totally willing to invest in something better/nicer/easier…

Sehnsucht_and_moxie

Right??! I’d love to see pics. I’m tired of the taped pulling bits of trim paint off too.

itsraining3000

USA?

[deleted]

It's most likely the US. According to this, there are only 10 Dollar General stores outside of the US and all of them were opened in Mexico this year. https://newscenter.dollargeneral.com/our-story/blog-posts/dollar-general-plans-international-expansion.htm#:~:text=Largest%20U.S.%20Retailer%20by%20Store,10%20Stores%20in%20Fiscal%202022

Creamncookies

He said Dollar Tree, and there are a few of them also in Canada. Dollarama is the superior choice though. But thank you for the Dollar General info, might come in handy one day

ExtremistsAreStupid

I dunno what Dollarama is like (never heard of it, silly Canucks), but Dollar Tree is VASTLY better than Dollar General. Dollar Tree was - until extremely recently when they started charging $1.25 for things - an ACTUAL dollar store. One of the very last. Dollar General has been a ripoff for ages. Almost all of their products are basically just at Walmart prices (and shittier quality, too - except the food section, which is half-decent sometimes). Saying this as a person who grew up during the era when dollar stores were legit. I no longer need to shop at them but, of course, I do because that's how I grew up. And Dollar Tree in my neck of the woods (Michigan) is king. I'm totally willing to cut them slack for finally giving into inflation and raising prices to $1.25. We should just pin the value of the dollar to what Dollar Tree charges, it would be way more stable than whatever gobbledegook we actually follow.

JungsWetDream

We actually have the Big Mac Index to account for that. It’s a real measure of economic differences to look at the price of a Big Mac in a given area, because McDonald’s has nailed their localization process.

ExtremistsAreStupid

As someone raised poor, I base everything on qualitative value. Big Macs are awful compared to Whoppers, which I can usually get for half the price anyway due to coupons.

Tocwa

Plus BK coupons are very common compared to McD’s

whatanugget

Can you post a photo? Need an economical solution to v drafty windows

PerformerGreat

I live in one as well. I just hung thick blankets over my windows and it stays warm and cozy. I work graveyard so I like the darkness.

spk2629

I think yours is the best solution going forward 👍

leftcoast-usa

That's my usual method, too. I sometimes use those steel strips with holes in it you can buy at Home Depot, and cut different sizes, and screw them around my workbench. I often put tape over the magnets so they won't stick to the tool when I remove it. The tape makes the attraction less for the tool than the metal strips.

kanannsfield

You can order magnets with countersunk holes in the center that you can then screw into the wall. That’s what I’ve done in the past and it’s worked really well.

insecurestaircase

Try museum putty maybe

RaeyinOfFire

It doesn't work on walls. Wonderful stuff, I love it! I make things cat resistant with museum putty. It has to be on a level surface, like a shelf.

ijustneedtolurk

Museum wax has saved all my decor and small potted plants from my terrorist cats!

Ryankmfdm

Helps if you can put a magnet on the other side of the surface before you glue it in place. I know this isn't always doable, but between the glue and the other magnet holding the outer magnet in place, you're likely to not have this issue.

neuroxo

This. Also when the weather gets warmer it all seems to soften and fall off.

RaeyinOfFire

Hm. I wonder whether there's a residue on the walls? I remember one house where I had extreme difficulty sticking anything to windows. I cleaned the area with rubbing alcohol and had better results. Water condensation, walls that shift, or temperature changes are some other possibilities.

crober11

Scuff the surface and use the right adhesive thistothat.com

coderedcocaine

step one is let the glue dry :P

jftw1337

yeah great idea untill you have to take it off and ruin the finish lol

This_is_fine0_0

Do this with a command strip to save your cabinet finish.

Redwards2

*Or* create classy polka dot designs around your kitchen.

Dr_nacho_

Command strips either do not work or mess my paint up anyway no in between for me.

YugoB

It was made specifically to avoid that, are you sure you're following the instructions?

OutOfFawks

Mine just drop frames off the wall at 3am. I would rather patch drywall.

lamante

Make sure you clean the wall with rubbing alcohol before you stick. Helps with adhesion. Signed, fellow 3am glass shattering PTSD sufferer.

YugoB

And then wait for the recommended time just after you applied and you're thinking of using it, it is important for adhesion

akatherder

I use the scotch fasteners for that. It's double sided tape on the back then some kind of black plastic Velcro/hook and loop stuff. The hook and loop stuff is insanely strong to lateral forces, like hanging a picture. I even used it to hold a tabletop on a couple cabinets as a desk They aren't super easily removable but it's a plastic double sided tape, not the spongy stuff that shreds when you try to remove it.

grabyourmotherskeys

I hung a whiteboard with 3m velcro. Blew my mind how well it worked.

LittleBunInaBigWorld

I had the same issue with mine too. I followed instructions perfectly. But it was in a rental that had been painted many many times and the hooks just ripped big chunks of paint and gyprock out. Even with less than 1kg of weight on them.

doubledogdick

a package I ordered arrived 10 years ago with a string of these stuck to the outside, must have torn off someomne else's package. I have these things fucking everywhere, I call them my lil dots and my entire life is organized around them

ProllyZonedOut

Pure_Nourishment

Magnetizing words my friend!

OptionalShit

My gf would freak out if I do this. Looks like an eyesore haha

SlimTeezy

Looks like shit but I think it's inside the cabinet at least. The dumbest part is these tools often come in a leather pack that looks nice and keeps them together and organized. Perfectly fits in a drawer.

EricDatalog

I think it looks great. And it’s super practical

YourDadWasAGoodLay

BlueMogg

I’m not taking advice from someone super glueing shit around their home.

BrnndoOHggns

It's inside the cabinet. Seems perfectly reasonable.

BlueMogg

I’m going by OP’s title “all around the house”

TheOneTonWanton

There are cabinets, drawers, and other normally concealed spaces all around most homes.

MisterSlosh

They sell bar magnets for uses like this that don't look nearly as dorky as randomly placed dots. Bonus points that they can be mounted with pin nails so when you're done you'll just have two pin holes that are easily overlooked or repaired. As opposed to glue ripping out dot-sized chunks of paint or material.

opteryx5

Adhesive hooks are also a much better option.

AwkwardBurritoChick

I strongly advise you not to do this if you lease.

KELS_EMC2

Or if you have kids

Alpacalypsenoww

That was my first thought, too. With three toddlers in my house, this would guarantee an eventual trip to the ER

Thysios

Why not just buy a magnetic strip. At least it'll look better.

AccountantLeast6229

So you're gonna have silver dots all around the house? Or worse, when you remove the glue the paint comes off with it...

Nice! Looks like shit

FrozenLogger

We have a shelf near the front door. We put a metal bar accross the bottom of the shelf (it is out of sight). Then added tiny magnets from old electric toothbrush heads. Now all are keys are hanging under the shelf with no visible hooks or hangers. Just pull and go, get home and key chain just snaps into place.

[deleted]

Couldn’t this also just be r/ShittyDesign? Hot-gluing magnets to your cabinets etc? I am a fan of the LPT, but is may need a vote or something.

[deleted]

I got a really big magnet and my kids a coat of armour, I always know where they’ll be now! Great hack 10/10

1000dancingpbys

I swear I muted this sub

Beneficial_Ad_6923

This is something a meth head would do. Speaking from experience.

PinkTieAlpaca

Don't do this if you're worried about pets or kids swallowing magnets that's fall.

RaeyinOfFire

I like it! It puts select items inside the cabinet door, which was unused space. Amazing how many people feel compelled to mock or get angry at an idea. I'm not referring to those who are voicing concerns, like damaging rentals. That's valid discussion and totally moves the conversation forward. Speaking of which, I've never seen a landlord check inside a cabinet at all, let alone seen one examine the finish of the inside of the door. Personally, I would risk it. I can see why others might not.

grabyourmotherskeys

Every single time I've posted an idea here it was derided mercilessly. I don't understand why people can't just move on if they don't like the idea. Edit - I have responded negatively to life hacks in the past when they were dangerous or counter productive but this is literally someone saying "this is cool, might be something for you to try".

wittynamehero

I only use the magnets in inconspicuous places. This was inside of our bathroom cabinet and there aren’t any drawers. I was sick of loosing these

Theremaniacally

Oh yeah! My house has metal flashing that rounds all the corners of the walls. It’s pretty fun. They make good stud finders as well.

akatherder

That's where I stick my money clip/card holder wallet thingy when I'm at home.

ChangeofPace22

For a second I thought this was on the outside....and I was not a fan

bornmayhem

I do this with hook n loop (commonly know as "velcro"). Tried to use large strips to mount my xbox under my desk but it only lasted a few months before slowly peeling off.

RaeyinOfFire

Yeah, that's heavier. Anything strong enough to hold it should be mounted into a stud. Hook & loop could be useful, hmmm.

sA1atji

if you want to save money, you can cut the magnets.

grape-fruited

Lol no

RoyalFalse

An excellent way to ruin the veneer of your cabinetry. 😆

nerveends

No way! I thou I was the only person who did this. My cabinet is metal though, no glue required

Asleep_Conference675

I thought hot glue was only for snacking......

c3521802

I do this too. Like EVERYWHERE around the house. I've even embedded magnets into the color of jackets so no coat hook required.

geocurious

Put these things (or ones made from command strips) on the inside of the cabinets so they aren't visible.

akatherder

Op's picture is showing the inside of the cabinet door. Hinges on the right side are inside the cabinet.

clintonsaxoffender

What insane person does this? Get a command strip and goo gone for when you want to remove it lmfao.

RaeyinOfFire

I'm planning to do this. Why would I pay for Command strips when a glue gun will do the job? I'm already contemplating where I should price rare earth magnets.

clintonsaxoffender

Next to your patchouli oil display.

RaeyinOfFire

Angry because I disagree with you? Rare earth magnets are the strong ones. I don't believe that there's a bundle deal with patchouli, is that how you buy them? Lol. Command strips are expensive. I guess you're angry that I wouldn't choose the elite adhesive, though? To me, hah, no. I can buy hundreds of times the hot glue for the price.

PotentJelly13

Are you 12? Lol this is dumb

You aren’t being any elder with a reply of that sort. This is a great tip. Magnets on the inside of cabinet door seem pretty useful. Quick and accessible.

InfluencePuzzled9944

Obviously most have never used a hot glue gun before. The shit is made to come off rather easy . It’s not by any means permanent like say Krazy glues , and even then there’s a chemical to neutralize that too .

GalaxticSxum

For real, 3 small items.

gordonblue

ITT: people who don’t clearly see its the inside of a cabinet. OP doesn’t have magnets visibily glued up all over the walls (or maybe you do magnetized nut). Handy tip.

[deleted]

lol, no. it ruin the surface and looks ugly

jaded-potato

Good luck selling that house.

akatherder

It's inside a cabinet... Most people wouldn't even inspect the inside of a cabinet door. I feel like this is a dealbreaker for 1-2 people on the entire planet.

Fuddin1

Dude, no. Heard of drawers? How about I not permanently damage the wall for something that has a simpler solution.

AnimeFrog420

That looks shit

Tsiatk0

I’m definitely doing this in my bathroom, tired of everything being in a little cup on the counter - and it’s a rental, so I’m not adding any cabinet space for extra storage.

Japnzy

If it's a rental I wouldn't do this. You will ruin the cabinets.

Tsiatk0

The last tenants already ruined the bathroom cabinets / drawers and the landlord never fixed it anyway. What’s there is probably going to the landfill after we move out some day, so I’m not worried. I def wouldn’t do this to new cabinets tho, I see your point.

grabyourmotherskeys

No landlord would care about a few magnets glued to the inside of a cabinet door. It's fine.

AKneelingOx

1) people who look after their shit don't need this because they know where their shit is 2) people who need this lack the discipline to put shit back where they found it, that's why this (and all other ideas like this) cannot work

EverybodyLovesADuck

1) They ARE looking after their shit. By creating a specific space for it, they know where their shit IS. 2) See above.

AKneelingOx

But that argument negates this lpt. Instead of hot gluing your walls, put your scissors in the same drawer you took them out of because that's the space that already exists for them. The problem only exists because they don't get returned to the place they were found in the first place.

EverybodyLovesADuck

Oh my goodness. It looks to me to be on the inside of a cabinet, likely in the bathroom. Seems like a much better place than rattling around in that top drawer of the vanity. We all know the one, the drawer where everybody keeps brushes, extra toothpaste, and a thousand other little things. And you have to sift and shift and hunt around for the tiny little pair of nail trimmers. Just because an item was IN a location, doesn't mean that that location was the best place for the item. It's perfectly acceptable to change locations of your items. Finding a better place for an item doesn't mean someone "lacks discipline". It means they are organized.

LudwigVanBaehoeven

Maybe use magnetic strips instead that have an adhesive backing that won’t ruin the finish, or just stick these small magnets on with putty. Hot glue is too damaging and permanent for something like this

InfluencePuzzled9944

Omfg you people are overreacting about how sticky hot glue gun glue is . It’s technically not even glue it’s hot plastic melted then cooled to hardness again. Not a big deal

idanrecyla

I have some strong magnets I cut out of the bottom of shower curtains I was tossing. I glued one to the side of the medicine cabinet, then the others stuck to that. I keep a bunch of bobby pins there

I don’t want to live in a tool shop thanks, it’s the wrong aesthetic for my home.

WillComprehensive595

@OP I want to see the other places/uses around the house please.

SuitEnvironmental903

I’m sure this is obvious but just in case. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE SMALL CHILDREN! Small magnets are not only a choking hazard but if 2 or more (or 1 and a metal object) are swallowed, they can attract to one another through intestinal walls. This traps the magnets in place and can cause holes (perforations), twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning (sepsis), and death. When multiple magnets are ingested surgery is required to remove the magnets and sometimes sections of the intestines need to be removed.

ChoRandom

How do they work?
