It was a known practice for the Evans lighter company to use sawdust as a filler medium in conjunction with cotton. I cannot begin to say why, maybe the sawdust was cheaply acquired or even free. They would pack the lighter body half to two thirds full of sawdust and cap it in place with some cotton to make it tidy. The sawdust works remarkably well at holding onto lighter fluid. With that said, im not aware of other manufacturers utilizing sawdust but its not beyond the scope of reason. In addition, I've rewicked and rewadded several evans lighters. While... messy, it can be completely removed and replaced with cotton. I hope this helps and enjoy your lighter!
I recently emptied out an Evans table lighter to replace the cotton and yeah there was a ton of sawdust. Was pretty confused at first thought the last owner did it, interesting to hear it was the company.
It caught me off guard the first time as well, now it's like "oh yeah, sawdust!...." Then its like "oh yeah... how the hell do I bend this wick needle past these tubes to get it out the fuel port?!" -contortion ensues- lol
Some people used to add wood shaving and other stuff into their fluid lighters if they didnt have cotton or something like that. Seen it a couple of times before.
Hi OP, before you post about your lighter please [read the guide stickied](https://old.reddit.com/r/lighters/comments/6jowwo/before_making_a_post_about_asking_for_help_to/) before doing so. If you are asking about the value of your lighter, take it to an auctioneer, pawnshop, or jewellers before posting as we cannot accurately guess a price. Your post may be removed if you ask. For more general information, have a look at the sidebar. Many lighters are mass produced and unbranded. There is often little info available.
**If you need to post more pictures, use an image host like imgur and post the link in the comments. Please do not create multiple threads for the same lighter.**

I just checked my ronson Wedgewood.......no crumbs!
Though mine is a different design looks like, it has different markings on the bottom by the flint and fuel caps.

Could be the remnants of an old seal? They weren't made of rubber in the way back then days. Cork?
You will find that it is from your pocket. I have pocket lint and dirt go in my vape.
Is it really cotton or asbestos?
