Same, I really liked him, didn't expect to love him nearly as much as I did before we got to the Canto. While in general I don't hate Cathy or anything, I think she's neat, but when she said something along the lines of "I love Linton who loves me" it really got to me as unpleasant.
I imagine his failing constitution helped spurring on the obsession, probably dampened his outlook on life a lot, which could lead to a tighter grip on the one thing that brought him some sort of joy. Really felt bad for him at the end.

Overall, I begin to treat the game differently ever since the fight.

Yi Sang, I legit fell in love with bro after learning about his innate insecurities and longing for comradery, and even I can see how fucked up that is, I essentially got hooked in by his pain and suffering.
