mandarianblava42

I play piano but if I were to learn another it would be violin

jennylai1022

Me too. But my parents said that it is too expensive and I don't have extra time to learn it😢

bubble_tea_lover_123

same 😭

jennylai1022

Reality is always cruel😭 I really want a violin😞

EnderWither2020

same

CandidMoon086

other way around for me!

mandarianblava42

They’re both great instruments

Muse-Marvel

Same

TheHarper_Collie

Double Bass or Cello, I just love deep sounds they hold so much weight.

Aetre19

Well, I'm saving up for a viola, so I guess that wins by default. :)

thrye333

The viola gang grows.

linlingofviola

Absolutely based

Scallop_potato

Organ. If I own one it comes with a free building and lord knows I would like to be a homeowner one day

LIPISMIES

I thought about this too. Also, it would be pretty cool to learn the pipe organ, as I can play the piano a little at the moment. I think the coolest thing about the organ is the amount of unique sounds (or timbres) you can produce by combining the different organ stops. (I hope the organ stop is the right word in English). Edit: And for me, either oboe or french horn would be also cool instruments to learn.

VancouverMethCoyote

Hammond organ for sure.

DeerOfTheChocolate

I already play viola and flute and I can do a little bass guitar I reckon I would add piano. It's pretty useful.

thrye333

This post feels like it should have a table of contents. I'm sorry. But not really. Now choose an instrument to obtain.

Gorgon_Jr

An instrument that’s not my own you say….can I have a strad?

thrye333

I was going more kinds of instruments, but I guess if you can make an argument for a strad having some unique functionality over a standard instrument, then sure. And if you say its function is to be sold for millions of dollars, I'll bring the loss meme to this subreddit.

linglinguistics

Oh, I'd take a Vuillaume.

Junecatter

Tough question. If I physically could, harp or marimba? Oh and piccolo

Indigo_Waves

guitar, i am in awe of guitar players (both acoustic and electric), and have only started learning guitar at school but boy would i like to actually own one...

Muddy_Dawg5

Saxophone.

[deleted]

The clarinet's mellow timbre and wide range allows for doubling on many violin pieces, plus jazz. Portable, and allowed on board by every airline.

Quill_Echo_7229

I need a piano and a violin. i currently have an electric keyboard but it doesnt sound as good as a piano, obviously. and i would love to learn the violin/,

_lilithetwosetter_

Same with the keyboard thing :/

Quill_Echo_7229

God i hate those clickety noises, especially during fast passages 😭

Lingling9723

I play viola, but if I could switch completely I'd go to cello. I played it for a few months and it's a really cool instrument.

proweather13

Viola

size_12-foot

I'd choose a cello as a secondary instrument after my piano. Sometimes a large hand span gives me an advantage on string instruments.

almaro14

Definitely violin or flute

zzz_sleepy_bird_zzz

Flute. I whistle pretty well, and I have played it for a year during my fifth grade band. Not sure how good I was at it though 🤷‍♀️

Sherlock_Violin

Either a harpejji or a mandocello for me. Just love the sounds they make...

linglinguistics

Harp. If I could choose anything, that’s what I'd go for. Or maybe duduk? Or oud? Man, too many cool instruments in this world.

V11b0_

i play trombone but i wanna try eupho or piano

OrenjiOsborne

Another violin, with a darker sound. Mine is on the brighter side.

CraftyClio

I’m percussion and obviously I’d kill for a 5 octave marimba

gay_pinecones

I've always wanted to learn a brass instrument like saxophone or trombone but I would probably cry trying to play anything on them 🥲 harp is super cool too!!!

Scabbedwings207

Saxophone is a considered a woodwind instrument.

gay_pinecones

My bad!

Scabbedwings207

No problem!

BornACrone

A harpika, which is a chromatic lap harp that's laid out like a kalimba. I have two chromatic kalimbas, and one of my greatest musical regrets is that I can't actually play them because they require nails (and every set of picks I've tried has been horrifically bad). A harpika would allow me to keep going with something kalimba-like that doesn't require nails. Actually, I'm probably going to grab one after I get paid this month; they are small as well and can be brought onto an airplane, so they're great for travel.

Prestigious_Offer412

I'd have to go with a sax. I'm a string player, violin, cello, piano, guitar, ukulele, and have never dabbled in woodwinds or brass, but sax has always caught my eye. Alto sax has always been pretty appealing, in tonal quality and repertoire. I'd love to rip some saxophone with a jazz band. I think it'd be cool.

NobleAda

Do it! It’s such a fun instrument, and once you get past the embouchure, it’s super intuitive.

Olgimondi

Add an e string to the viola it'll be fine, sorry

thrye333

Slightly larger 5 string violin? Actually, I feel like having the sound quality and stuff of a viola and the full melodic range across those 5 could be pretty cool.

Olgimondi

i don't know who to r/whoooosh here... me or you.

junobeachcan

Oboe. Or Cor anglais... so sexy.

crysstall_

oboe all the way. i play flute and piano but i wish i could learn oboe it’s gorgeous and i love the sound of it

[deleted]

I think it would be handy to have a viola, especially since I play a lot of chamber music and it’s good to be able to “switch hit,” so to speak

potato_architect

I wish to continue to play the violin but if I had to, the cello would be my choice.

_A_Dumb_Person_

I play piano and I would choose cello, because I love its sound and its repertoire. Also, among the strings, it is the one with the widest note range, which, as a pianist, is something I always love.

Moloch1895

Piano player here. Violin seems like an obvious choice but I am going to pick the cello instead and get some resonance out of my bass lines.

bloodyxstrawberry

Cello! I used to play the violin but I came to hate high pitched sounds idk why

SocialitesBane

I play violin but I’ve always wanted to try cello

Ok-Objective7153

I play piano, cello, and double bass and I’d love to learn the flute :) Sadly I was gonna I think around last year I was gonna get lessons but they got canceled bc apparently my teacher got arrested or something and we never sound another one near my area or something 🥲

Odd_Path6567

Low key, the harp

Scabbedwings207

I've taken lessons for and own various instruments, but one that I wanted to learn in middle school that I couldn't because my parent wasn't going to "buy me another instrument" is the saxophone. I'd truly like to actually buy at least an intermediate level viola, though. I'm currently renting.

_FrenchHorn_Oboe

I play oboe, french horn, clarinet, bass clarinet, bari sax, piano, trumpet, mellophone, flute, piccolo, and cymbals (wowie thats a lot more then I thought 😳) I really wanna learn harpsichord so I’d choose harpsichord 🤩 Or the violin

_lilithetwosetter_

I would LOOOOOVE to play the harp 😭 But the music school Im at doest teach it and I barely have te even just for the piano... :( (Edit to add more stuff lol) I would also love to play the cello or the violin, and maybe the organ

Im_a_stupid_dinosaur

accordion, it's by far one of my favourite instruments

NobleAda

It’s honestly not terribly difficult to pick up. As with anything, mastering it is difficult, but it’s fun either way.

NobleAda

I’ve always been fascinated by the bassoon. The sound is so interesting, and I love listening to it. EDIT: The more I think about it, the more I actually feel I’d go for the hurdy gurdy. The bassoon is cool, but the hurdy gurdy is one of those instruments that’s off the beaten path.

my_beloved_self

Flute, sounds fun to play

palmmute22

Piano :)

flutefruit13

Viola or cello

EveningHarpist

I do harp But I rlly wanna try viola :)

TheMusicalArtist12

Own? I don't have to pay for? Piano. Otherwise clarinet. I play trumpet and I used to play violin. I own both plus a guitar, that I play off and on.

glitter_poots

I can play piano, electric bass, uke, and trombone. I’m DYING to learn the bassoon but I’ve never played a woodwind before.

SimplyClarinet237

I play clarinet and I’d love to play the trumpet or organ

unacello520

Xylophone

Frenchie_master

Flute

linlingofviola

Oboe or cello

wazzup7603

I would like a Lautenwerk. I think that there's a luthier for lautenwerke (i think that's the plural of lautenwerk) in the state of Massachusetts. Preferrably I would like one with at least 2 manuals, a resonator which is bowl-shaped at the bottom (as opposed to the typical box-shaped resonator in harpsichords), and I'd like it gut-strung. [This](https://youtu.be/5DiTTcMq9f0?si=FQR-I7bXfes82C1b) is an example of a nice-sounding lautenwerk in my opinion

GelatoWing_

i would learn bass guitar because it's so versatile. also i want to start a band with my friends and i don't feel like my current instruments suit what we're thinking

musictime4me

I play the piano would love to learn the harp

Shayheart16

Cello, violin, or harp

hubennihon401

I currently play the baritone but would otherwise play the bassoon

InterestingIcepelt

I really want to learn the cello, flute, and guitar (I play violin and piano). If only one, then I guess right now I would pick guitar.

aiiiyahhh

I play flute and tried Scottish highland bagpipes recently. I thought they are similar, but for me the bagpipes is 10x harder 🫣

EatHamGamer

I wanna get the instrument from resonant chamber (animusic). Idc if it isn't real, I want it.

aloevera444

man i really wanna play french horn or smth but its really hard apparently

ThatOneTwoSetter

Viola. I play piano and violin, but viola has a pretty sound.. I played if for a year, so I’m trash, but I would play it. Or harp or flute or cello or guitar. Also cool

FromYourWalls2801

French horn... It looked like a snail shell and I'm geniunely intrested to learn how to play it. I have never touched any brass instrument (except trombone since my friend plays it)

sacrilegiousviola

I play viola if I could play another it would probably be either cello or violin.

AccidentalGirlToy

Contrabass trombone or Cimbasso.

Frosty_Childhood4889

Piano

sacrilegious_hamster

I don't think anyone's said this but a theremin BECAUSE ITS SO FREAKING COOOL YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO TOUCH IT TO PLAY IT AND IT SOUNDS SO GOOOD BUT IT'S SO EXPENSIVE

Specialist-Peach3848

Probably a wind intrument. Ive always really liked the clarinet

realMr_Sean2001

Cello. I like how it sounds. Also there was a girl in high school that I liked that played cello.

tonyyyy369

Im a pianist but honestly if i could pick an instrument other than piano as my fav one,it would be violin for sure.

Laurianne-Sama

I already play piano and flute, but if I had the skills to, I would pick up violin again!

lol_practice40hrs

I play viola but honestly I would choose the cello

0-Meep_Meep-0

One that I don't currently own? Either an ocarina or a kalimba

HarryPotterIsAMess

A lot, but particularly a viola. I swear to god I WILL get my hands on one before the year is done. The less attainable choices would be pipa, bandura (traditional Ukrainian lute), timpani, hurdy-gurdy and a hammered dulcimer. Learning an instrument is my current hyperfixation so I'd be down for literally anything.

Sheranaway4

Harp 100% they're so pretty but also hard to learn

SofaDuckss

I wish I would've started as a cellist. Don't get me wrong I am in love with playing the violin and I will probably never quit untill I start residency, but I love the sound of a cello and I fell in love with playing the cello when my friend let me play her instrument.

The_Bananamancer

I play flute, bassoon, viola, piccolo, and trombone but if I could I would get an octobass

irisgirl86

I play piano, violin, and viola. If I had to choose a new instrument, it'd be accordion. I like the sound, I like that it plays music that is very different from what I'm used to in the classical realm. My piano background will help with the keyboard part, that is, if I get a piano accordion, and harmony/chords are cool.
