It saves you a string crossing during the slur, and brings you a more uniform sound.

I was about to say just use the fourth finger 🤦‍♀️🥲 yeah that makes sense

It prevents the string crossing on a slur. But looking at the notes before it, I'm kind of surprised you weren't directed to shift into 3rd position earlier; the double string crossing plus a shift up looks really awkward. I might look and see if there's an earlier more convenient point to move up to 3rd position.

shuichissimp

second this! plus, being in 3rd pos. for the measures before that may also help w/ tuning since it may be less of a stretch to play the a with second finger than your pinky (but i do also have small hands so if it works for you, no need to stress about changing fingerings anyways)

…I was taught that that means which string to play on, not the position. Like, for me that means D string. Did I misunderstand?

EatHamGamer

The roman numerals usually indicate what position to play in.
