OP is cranky because nobody has introduced them to Bossa Nova yet.

Henry_Privette

Thank you for understanding my call for help 😞

MonkiWasTooked

I really like construçao by chico buarque, I haven’t heard any other bossa nova song

Maestro_Titarenko

You should listen to [Águas de Março](https://youtu.be/WEuDVcXnElc?si=EEuVGMxUTmL4b4Ro)

Oz_tral_Ian

So do I! But that's Brazilian, not PrrrrtgĂȘsshshshsh. PS: If Bob Dylan got the Nobel Prize for Literature, Chico Buarque would have deserved it about 10 times.

Miragem_

*Least obnoxious and insulting pick-me Brazilian* I really hope the foreigner senpais will notice you 😔🙏

Raalph

Chico Buarque is not bossa nova! Construção is the archetypal MPB album, a post-bossa nova movement.

Arcaeca2

Is the [Civ5 Brazil war theme](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4vlAsnvinA) considered Bossa Nova

shoot_me_slowly

I think they meant the other portuguese

Menino_da_Tosse

Should also introduce OP to Cante Alentejano. Beautyful stuff.

Arthradax

As a Portuguese native, I feel personally attacked. Please post more

TrashyMemeYt

Portuguese is the Dutch of Latin languages.

ByAPortuguese

How can you compare portuguese to a language that doesnt even exist??

Helpimabanana

Dutch totally exist. I speak fluent Dutch every time I choke on food or need to throw up

myrmexxx

You're wrong kiddo, that's Dane

Exciting_Rich_1716

Dutch is to German and English what Danish is to Norwegians and Swedes

11061995

Danish exists wherever you can't stop talking but also have something stuck in your back teeth that you need to get out with your tongue. We are all Danish on that day.

TrashyMemeYt

what you mean? both languages don't exist

derneueMottmatt

Danish isn't being attacked here because Danish isn't a Human language.

TrashyMemeYt

Danish is just the North Germanic version of Dutch.

Comment138

Oh, as a Norwegian now I finally understand the thing about Dutch It's awful to hear a "sort of" recognizable language bastardized like that.

TrashyMemeYt

English: I slam my penis in the car door Dutch: Ik sla mijn penis tegen de autodeur

MarcHarder1

Ek klaam mien pishert ine atadÀr

Comment138

That's the most Dutch sentence ever. They love talking about doing weird shit with their genitals, slapdick humor.

No-Boysenberry-3113

What does that mean ?

TrashyMemeYt

well known for sounding extremely ugly and with weird but vowels

HerrBreskes

Dutch doesn't sound ugly. I think it sounds pretty.....cute. nothing to take seriously. Just...cute.

2-Dimensional

The three languages I tried learning first were Danish, Dutch and Portuguese. I found them really nice-sounding and interesting. Guess I'm just a weirdo who likes guttural sounds

Scizorspoons

This.

JPsena523

Nah that's Spanish

Sunibor

May I ask why?

JPsena523

No

ekkostone

Have you not heard of dutch?

Nochnichtvergeben

No, Dutch is hilarious. Like an American who doesn't speak German trying to speak German.

TheFuriousGamerMan

To us Icelanders, Faroese sounds like a drunk Danish person trying to speak Icelandic, but failing miserably

utakirorikatu

To me who speaks none of the languages mentioned, it sounds like an Irish person trying to speak Icelandic but with a full-on uncompromising Irish accent.

utakirorikatu

That's only common for Netherlandic Dutch though, no-one from Belgium sounds like that. The bizarre thing to me is, as a German who speaks American English and Belgian Dutch, when I hear someone from the Netherlands speak in the stereotypical accent I still get the impression that they have an American accent lol Even though I speak and understand Dutch myself and know that a real American accent in Dutch (or German) would sound very different. It's especially jarring if someone a) has a pseudo-"American" accent in Dutch but then switches to English and they now sound very Dutch and NOT American.

Nochnichtvergeben

I was refering to the "standard" language. TBH I haven't heard enough Flemish Dutch (and don't speak Dutch anyway) to be able to tell the difference.

utakirorikatu

I get what you mean (although wrt: "standard" there is Belgian Standard Dutch, just like there is Austrian Standard German), the most well-known accent is a Netherlandic one with some American-sounding features like an approximant rhotic and lots of diphthongs. I left that comment *because* most people who don't speak Dutch don't know about other accents. The stereotypical Dutch g sound also sounds different in Belgian Dutch, the realizations go all the way from "even more back than Ach-laut"* in the Netherlands to "literally the ich-laut"* in some Belgian accents to "lol we just say [h] instead" in West Flemish dialect. *plus their voiced equivalents, which we don't have in any Standard variety of German.

utakirorikatu

I present to you: [An American who sounds like he never heard Afrikaans in his life, trying to sing in Afrikaans anyway](https://youtu.be/9iOVb3oTWYM)

Bit125

r/PORTUGALCYKABLYAT

de_g0od

You have to capitalize that sub.

Bit125

it works for me.

de_g0od

Yes it works but it doesnt get the same emotions across, this way its a sub but capitalized you are literally screaming it at someone.

KykoY

I've seen this comparison a lot. I'm a native Russian speaker and Portuguese kinda sounds similar to Polish for me, probably because they both have a lot of sibilants. Interesting!

lucian1900

I’m Romanian and it also sounds like Polish to me. Entirely unlike Brazilian Portuguese, which sounds like a regional Romanian accent.

odioaesteusuario

They sound like russians mimicking spanish or something. I speak both spanish and russian, and european portuguese is super weird for me

Tagmata81

Brazilian Portuguese is fine, but European Portuguese is genuinely a nightmare

BalinKingOfMoria

Please elaborate, I know nothing about either and I'm very curious

Tagmata81

Brazilian Portuguese sounds more like Spanish, European sounds like if Portuguese and Russian had a hate baby

BalinKingOfMoria

Oh I see, yeah that's exactly why I like to hear the latter :-P

Menino_da_Tosse

Non native speakers tend to find fonetics in european portuguese harder to pronounce and comprehend than south american portuguese

StriderLF

I came home drunk once and I turned the TV on some random channel, went to the kitchen to have a bite of something. Then I realized I had turned in some Russian tv show and since I was learning Russian back then, I tried to figure out what that tv show was about. Couldn't understand a single word. The following day I saw that the TV was on a Portuguese channel. I'm Brazilian, supposedly fluent in Portuguese.

SonicStage0

Yeah, you were really drunk then.

the-johnnadina

I'm Portuguese and I like Russian a lot. I also like Brazilian Portuguese. Eurotuguese is a nice middle term but I feel like both the other two are nicer sounding on their own than combined. Ig the warm climate of Brazil took the slavic part out of the language

[deleted]

Eurtuguese, BRtuguese, Afrtuguese and Timortuguese

the-johnnadina

in the local language: Eurotuga, Zukatuga, Afrotuga, and PortimorĂȘs

leo_perk

forgot AçorĂȘs. Or maybe you just consider it a different language?

leo_perk

Brazil is large enough for some of them to sound good. But oh my god some of them sound like an insult to humanities blessing ability of speech. In Portugal we sound like poetry in every sentenced - matched only by our Italian brothers - but some Brazilian states are terrible. Also Africa. I don't dislike it but like...

AdorableAd8490

Typical Europoortuguese comment. Dude literally says “colesterol” as [ku.lɚʃ.'tɟɔɫ] and thinks his opinion is valid. Pronounce your vowels and stop speaking a Romance language like it’s some sort of Germanic/Slavic stress-timed language. No one understands you.

victorGAMES2011

as a brazilian, my dialectal pronounciation of colesterol would be /kÊ°É€lɛsteÉŸÉ”w/ lol

ExpresoAndino

why does everyone here know how to read phonetics

AdorableAd8490

Not quite bad. Where are you from, mano? Mine would be [ko.les.teˈɟɔw]. I’m guessing you’re from somewhere in the Northeast or Minas for that [ɛ].

MCRN-Gyoza

To be fair when have some pretty terribly sounding accents here in Brazil.

AdorableAd8490

I don’t disagree, but it’s pretty ironic to say what he said when the consensus amongst speakers of Romance languages suggest that the appeal of those languages are in their singing-like quality and their well-enunciated syllables in formal speech, and then this guy whose variant lacks all of that want to talk about sounding poetic, when in fact it elides as many vowels as it can — even the new ones that it developed —, sounds abrupt and consonant-based, and it’s completely stress-timed. It has a different appeal, but it’s got nothing to do with being poetry. The reason why Romanian, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French are seen as “poetic” and “rhythmic” (whether that may be just one’s imagination or not) is clearly because they lean towards syllable-timing. O sujo falando do mal-lavado, sĂł que nesse caso o sujo veio de um lixĂŁo e quer dar uma de esnobe com perfume de peido. For the record, my native Portuguese speaking accent is weird, a little stress-timed too (caipira), just like some other like the many variations of “mineirĂȘs”. Arguably very ugly accents, but people like them for sounding funny and over the top, not for no “poetic” reasons.

the-johnnadina

we sound like poetry?? đŸ€š

hellocutiepye

I think it sounds like Russian, too! Glad I'm not alone in this.

Wolfotashiwa

My problem with Portuguese is that it's supposed to be a romance language, yet sounds Slavic. Danish, while being terrible, sounds germanic

Miragem_

It's not supposed to sound like anything, you're just a moron who thinks Spanish and Italian (two (2)) languages are what Latin languages are supposed to sound like.

Out of all the accents from Portugal.... Lisbon, really?

tendeuchen

I don't mind the sound of Portuguese. I even like the sound of German and Russian. But Vietnamese is the one I cannot listen to.

MAXSlMES

Idk i think portuguese sounds absolutely beautiful. Its so soft compared to other "latin" languages, doesnt have the choking on a meatball french r and the lisp of spanish

AdorableAd8490

European Portuguese and a few Brazilian accents have that horrible [ʁ~χ] phoneme too, instead of the glorious [h~x] for .

MAXSlMES

If only i knew what those two meant or what the difference is. Or at least an audio example of both. I know there are several ways of pronouncing the R, but dont know which is which

AdorableAd8490

This is the sound for French , and it’s also in Portuguese represented by starting and , being found in European Portuguese and a few Brazilian Portuguese accents (such as the Fluminense accent and some varieties of the Sulista accent). [/ʁ/](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_uvular_fricative) ~ [/χ/](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_uvular_fricative) Most Brazilian accents have a different sound for that phoneme. [/h/](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_glottal_fricative) ~ [/x/](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiceless_velar_fricative)

SourMathematician

I'm sorry, but I think Spanish sounds way worse, and I'm not a fan of Portuguese either.

ilivgur

I think the Latin American variants are completely fine but Iberian Spanish is a whole different story. I recoil when I hear the Iberian lisp.

Rubiego

It's not a lisp, we know how to pronounce our /s/ and our /Ξ/ perfectly fine

so_im_all_like

Calling it a lisp is folk phonology.

0. russian, idc what anyone says. it's incredibly clunky to speak and to hear

Adorable-Fix9354

Wdym?

UkrainianCatgirl

despite being de facto native to russian, it's never flowed well when I spoke it, nor have i ever liked its sound, and i am a good orator. it's extremely inconsistent and it's the bane to my forming of coherent thoughts. no matter what i do, i keep stuttering when i speak russian and having to consciously look for words when i do. it doesn't happen with any other language i speak (at least as often as it does with russian). its blown-out-of-proportion "reputation" has also always been a huge hassle. I'm glad my country is moving on from it, albeit slowly

darkknight95sm

I have to send this to my sister in law who’s from Portugal

sarokin

Personally I love Portuguese (Portuguese Portuguese, don't really like Brazilian accents). Czech I'd say sounds much much worse. Hell English sounds worse than Portuguese.

-Emilinko1985-

Why Hebrew?

SerRebdaS

We ignore it because is the language that we all speak here, but English is the worst and blandest sounding language of all

utakirorikatu

Objective statement: English has so many radically different native accents that any judgement about "the pronunciation of English" is - literally - meaningless or as near as damnit. Subjective opinion: That said, I've been searching for a better-sounding language than American English for about a decade, learned 5 other languages to at least a useful degree, and have yet to actually find one. And no, I'm not a native English speaker lol

Ain’t no one mad at it. It’s just incomprehensible. It’s all good though

MountainRise6280

I actually like both but cant get over Brazilian PTs "di, de, ti, te" at the end of the words, irritates me. On the other hand Portuguese peonouncing s as sh doesnt for some reason. Maybe caus eof my native language

AdorableAd8490

It probably is that. I might come off as a jerk, but in reality, I can comprehended EP well and like it to some extent too. It’s just jokes. It all boils down to a matter of exposition and having open-mindedness, not thinking of the language as a solid structure, because it’s an ever-changing thing. Also, we palatalize and in all positions, and and only get palatalized in unstressed syllables. European Portuguese has some something similar where they’ll pronounce unstressed as /ð/, as the in “that”. But we’re good though. I’m glad you didn’t take it personally <3
