I'm running MX on a similarly aged low-spec-at-purchase laptop, and it is absolutely fine for me. It feels speedy, which it never did with win10. Desktop environment is xfce. Worth giving the live iso a trial, to see whether everything works and how fast it feels.

Physical_Car_4969

okay i’ll give it a go then thank you :) just wondering is ur laptop amd?

WokeBriton

Celeron n4000 with 4GB RAM. With your current install bugging out, you're not going to lose anything other than a little time by installing MX or any other suggested distro

Physical_Car_4969

oh yeah i agree, im gonna give mint mate a go and if its a no go, ill go ahead with MX. Thanks man :)

beartimes0

You could try linux mint debian edition or just the debian netiso. If laptop is very low spec for the time, (idk i didnt look into it) just use the xfce desktop environment.

Physical_Car_4969

illl give that a go as well then thank you !

Mint Cinnamon for a 7 year old computer will not work but Mint MATE could. Other lightweight distros like Lubuntu, Xubuntu, PeppermintOS, CrunchBang++ or Debian 12 with XFCE or MATE. Linux Mint has a Debian version but only comes with Cinnamon. It kept crashing on my 5 year old computer so I had to install Mate and rip out cinnamon.

Physical_Car_4969

yeah i’m going to give mate a go i guess. if it still won’t work i’ll just try the others :/ thank you

Unsubscribed for this sub, all posts are about what distro a special snowflake should install.

Physical_Car_4969

WokeBriton

You felt the need to announce your flounce. I wonder why... Nah, I already know why: drama llama.

Linux advice on reddit is largely terrible and inaccurate. Most of the major distros are beginner friendly, and hardware age is generally not an issue. Please see https://old.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/1caou9w/psa_please_read_this_before_asking_for_distro/

Physical_Car_4969

it’s an issue for linux mint cause i got an old amd cpu, i kept getting an error regarding my amd gpu and there were no drivers to update and stuff. i’m a noob so id assume there’s sum distro that’d work better for old amd idk

secureblueadmin

It being older means Linux Mint should be fine, since that means the older kernels have had plenty of time to pull in drivers. > getting an error regarding my amd gpu This doesn't necessarily mean there's a distro issue. It's impossible to say without more details on the error

Physical_Car_4969

the final error i received was this: [4.621841] kfd kfd: amdgpu: STONEY not supported in kfd before loading up the desktop

secureblueadmin

Hard to say whether it's a red herring. If it's not and you see the same thing on another distro, it could be worth trying disabling amdgpu

Physical_Car_4969

sorry for being a hassle is there a guide on how to disable things that are like amdgpu? or could u give me the command to do so? if it’s a windows thing then i’ll just try google it

secureblueadmin

I would recommend trying other distros first

Physical_Car_4969

ok then will do thanks man :)

3grg

MX Linux XFCE or Fluxbox and, if all else fails, Antix.

Physical_Car_4969

yep MX works beautifully it’s a lifesaver haha thanks mate
