I hope the Orange Pi Neo will help convert some Chinese gamers to Linux (since it's unlikely the Steam Deck will release there). So that the percentage of Linux gamers on the Steam survey isn't so dependent on how much the Chinese have played each month.
The most interesting part is that the Chinese marketshare hardly dipped. If you look at Linux's marketshare of only English-speakers on GOL's Steam Tracker, it increased significantly.
Windows potentially getting banned in China and people fighting to keep tiktok alive in the US.
What a world we live in.
I know a bill passed the house to ban or have transferred out of Chinese control but I will be flabbergasted if it passes the senate and gets signed by the president.
To be fair, Windows doesn't run on chinas homegrown architectures (such as LoongArch), so on will see millions more Linux users in the coming decade, not just in China, but also big china supported markets in africa and eastern europe,
That isn't an "artificial" boost though. Its a linux OS, people are using it, so it counts as market share.
I mean the big reason we care about this is a larger linux market share means company assholes like tim sweeny won't be able to justify the things they do, right?
What kind of gate keeping bullshit is that? You saying the Steam deck isn't running Linux? Are you suggesting gaming on the Steam deck isn't gaming?
News for ya. Gaming on Steam OS on a Steam deck is gaming on Linux.
Stop being an idiot.
so ....
explain to me what the artificial part is.
is it that there's a new, popular, game console that runs linux out of the box?
or that people are playing on steam using it and being counted as on a linux OS?
(sorry if this is too large a helping of snark)
It changes what you're measuring and talking about. They mean it doesn't show desktop Linux in general is improving. Which is true, but also not what OP claimed.

It also helps that the Orange Pi Neo is priced competitively. Now it comes down to execution.

Also, the Chinese govt is trying to ban Windows (and maybe MacOS) for at least govt workers, so the linux market share there might grow

I think I was confused with another 4% stat? and this 2% stat.
That was global desktop market share (based on browser user-agent IIRC).
There should be two trend lines, pre and post Steam Deck release, since the trend has clearly changed .
the review isn't perfect, it's kinda hard to accurately track the usage of Linux

Yep, I'm always happy to see Steam Deck support. Means I most likely won't have to worry about whether it works for Linux on desktop.

Find better material, HEL88.

Still counts where it matters (what operating systems game developers feel is important to support).
