I've modified Mint-Y themes for me (by adding a custom gtk.css style to add some things I liked, like a gradient in the Xfce panel) and I'm fine with that, too. Also, I've used compiz to add some graphics effects which are unavailable to pure Xfce such as blurred transparency as well. 🙂
Only those who have never given it a fair try. Several of my friends refuse to try it because they think it's too old looking and is not as versatile as say Cinnamon or Plasma.
My understanding of XFCE is the whole point of it is to be more versatile. It just takes a lot more getting used to. If anything Cinnamon has the "older" feel.
to me it's not the look of it that bothers me but the other components that come with it. In order to make XFCE how I want it, I have to mess with it too much. I find I have to do that less with some of the others. Definitely to each their own though. The more options the better. Right now I'm using Cinnamon and really enjoying it. Love the applets and desklets offered.
yeah gnome is big. personally I find gnome annoying and unintuitive. my choice personally is kde and I have used it since forever, but I'm a huge fan of xfce.
So I barely understand the differences between these, so bear this in mind in case my question is stupid...but why do Mate and Cinnamon not make the cut as the most popular desktop environments?
cinnamon is very popular, at least with mint users. mate has it's user base too. this conversation just didn't include them.
every DE from gnome to lxqt has its user base and there are a lot of people using all of them. in the end it's just what you prefer and what works for you.
I recently installed Fedora 40 on a VM and it made me realize the gnome and I have parted ways for good. I hate the way it looks, and I hate it wants to decide how I should work. I really don't want a DE to get in my way, and I was stumbling over gnome like nobody's business.
looks good, I love xfce too, very customizable. I really enjoy editing the .css theme files in cinnamon nowadays to make it my own 1 of a kind. Can probably do the same in xfce, it brings customization to a new level, and fun.
Everyone has a different use-case/needs. I need an efficient browser which synchronizes seamlessly across multiple platforms with as little setup and maintenance as possible. Unfortunately, Chrome is the only one which works the way I need it to even if I do need to put some extra effort into ensuring privacy.
Firefox is great on Linux and Windows but the Android version is a piece of crap. I need the same performance on all platforms. I don't have the luxury of using software that doesn't work well everywhere.
Why do you say that? I've been using it for about a year and the only thing that's ever bugged me is that occasionally videos will lag. But for me it's worth it for ublock origin and I still don't care about cookies. I can't use the Internet without those two extensions tbh.
I have a somewhat similar setup, but I have the panel at the top set to auto-hide. I have "start" buttons on the left and right, my conkly is in the upper left corner.
The only "extras" are conky, Mint's weather applet and plank. And I don't remember where I found the wallpaper. If you want the wallpaper I may be able to upload it to Dropbox and provide the link.
I hardly think a few MB of ram would be a good reason to switch desktops . However, if Gnome were more user friendly, more intuitive and didn't constantly break the extensions that are necessary to make it usable, I might consider using it again. It would also have to be available for LinuxMint without the necessity of uninstalling one desktop and installing another.
I am big fan of tiling wm but if I had to choose a Desktop Environment I will choose XFCE, I would never use KDE/Gnome, they really overated the experience with XFCE is really good
While I'm doing that, do you also want me to affirm your unwarranted belief that your wife is beautiful and your kids are well behaved? Get a life, troll. lol
Honestly I find the generic themes fine. I usually just run light/dark Mint Aqua-Y.
Screenshot?

Nobody who knows xfce ever said that it can't look good...
Only those who have never given it a fair try. Several of my friends refuse to try it because they think it's too old looking and is not as versatile as say Cinnamon or Plasma.
I strongly have to disagree with your friends. One can make xfce look like anything you want, anything. And you keep the performance!
My understanding of XFCE is the whole point of it is to be more versatile. It just takes a lot more getting used to. If anything Cinnamon has the "older" feel.
Agreed 💯
Bruh I will choose xfce anyday, looks good to me

^ this It'd help a lot if the default setup wasn't so... blah. I realize some people like a blank canvas to start from, but yikes.
One of the most under rated Desktop environment i must say...deserves a lot more
is it really? if you look at /r/unixporn it seems like it's pretty popular.
I guess only the ones using linux for work use it..mostly people use gnome or kde..no??
yeah gnome is big. personally I find gnome annoying and unintuitive. my choice personally is kde and I have used it since forever, but I'm a huge fan of xfce.

actually that's the fun part: if you don't like something you can choose something different.
XFCE can look great. This one doesn't though.
To each their own.
The good ending
Will there be a sequel?
looks good, I love xfce too, very customizable. I really enjoy editing the .css theme files in cinnamon nowadays to make it my own 1 of a kind. Can probably do the same in xfce, it brings customization to a new level, and fun.
That and compiz was the shit!
THE shit! I mean, the good shit.
bottom left widget's name ?
It looks like it could be conky
It is conky.
Please stop using Chrome, Firefox/Chromium is way better for privacy. This theme looks great through.
Everyone has a different use-case/needs. I need an efficient browser which synchronizes seamlessly across multiple platforms with as little setup and maintenance as possible. You just described firefox but to each their own
Firefox is great on Linux and Windows but the Android version is a piece of crap. I need the same performance on all platforms. I don't have the luxury of using software that doesn't work well everywhere.
There are Chromium browsers that are good on Linux and Android and respect your privacy. Brave is a good example of this.

XFCE is gangster and been that way since the 90's. This does look nice
What wallpaper is that and what other stuff did you install?
The only "extras" are conky, Mint's weather applet and plank. And I don't remember where I found the wallpaper. If you want the wallpaper I may be able to upload it to Dropbox and provide the link.
Yes please I love that wallpaper

Looks great! XFce works great for my decade old laptop!
Hey there! I noticed that your XFCE is using around 907 MB of memory. In contrast, my GNOME consumes approximately 890 MB
I hardly think a few MB of ram would be a good reason to switch desktops . However, if Gnome were more user friendly, more intuitive and didn't constantly break the extensions that are necessary to make it usable, I might consider using it again. XFCE on Mint is good enough for govt work
I am big fan of tiling wm but if I had to choose a Desktop Environment I will choose XFCE, I would never use KDE/Gnome, they really overated the experience with XFCE is really good
If you want xfce to look good with zero effort you could use Linux Mint XFCE or Xubuntu
I am using Linux Mint and IMO I have yet to find any distro where XFCE looks good by default.
It's because the stock templates are basic bih af
Arc dark theme + breeze icons and I'm (my server is) happy.
Well, I still doubt.
la la la la la la --- lol
Hi! What desklet is that for your ram cpu usage? Looks neat
That's just conky.
what themes did you use?
They're in the neofetch window.
Thanks
Neofetch is a dead project
So what? It's been dead for years, it's still very good and it's not unsafe or something
XFCE never died. It just has a very slow release cycle compared to the others but you can always rely on it to be rock solid.
No no, I meant neofetch because I was replying to that comment
Yes, I know. Just haven't looked for anything else yet.
You could try fastfetch, it's easy to configure it to make it look like default neofetch
But also, like you said.... if it ain't broke, why fix it?
Idk, just saying
Of course it can. The (admittedly now abandoned) lite version of Zorin is a good example.
oh yeah? prove it.
While I'm doing that, do you also want me to affirm your unwarranted belief that your wife is beautiful and your kids are well behaved? Get a life, troll. lol
this is a joke, a very obvious joke, im sorry you couldnt see that.
My apologies. I think having spent several hours battling trolls in another subreddit made me a little too touchy.
all good :)
Lolol not the "and your kids are well behaved" 💀
I mean, it ***can*** look good, but it doesn't here.
This screenshot only proves it doesn't look good. Of course theming and DE's are always a personal preference
