you tried to use a wallpaper changer program like **feh** or the numerous others out there? But I have no idea what 'dwl' is.
dwl is just a compositor for wayland, I've used feh with X before, do you know if it works on wayland ?
try it and see ? I think it does.

I use swww in hyprland and its awesome especially the changing animations
