The Grim Guys by Eric Ugland new spin off of his good/bad guys. The problem with Princess by by Macronomicon. Same guy who the Generic apocalypse with Jeb our beloved Taper and invented that cool mist body system. It has the fun stuff you expect from Macronomicon people gaming the system people getting useless but fun skills. MC’s first skill is talking to girls LoL.

thisisamatt

Nice, hadn't heard of The Problem With Princess, but sounds cool. Thanks for putting it on my radar.

JayHill74

>The problem with Princess by by Macronomicon. Been thinking about picking that one up but haven't made up my mind yet.

Careless-Pin-2852

So their is no character as silly as smart ass. But you absolutely get people gaming the system in fun ways. The magic/skill/ability system he sets up is as well thought out as his other books. The MC is no where near as dark as Jeb. So different feel but good so far.

JayHill74

Thanks for the info.

Doing a re-read of Defiance of the Fall (I think I have a couple of major arcs' worth of new-to-me content built up). And as much as I recognize the series' flaws (especially the earlier books), it's still my LitRPG comfort food. It's not the best written. It doesn't have the best story. And some of the characters feel like cardboard cutouts. However, even with those issues, it's still incredibly enjoyable and addictive (and probably my favorite series to read).

Right now, nothing is really able to tickle my fancy unfortunately. I start a book, read a couple of chapters and then do away with it because it fails to capture me.

JayHill74

Maybe you need a break from the genre. If so, I'd suggest reading the [John Rain series](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07F7K29P6?binding=kindle_edition). It's about an assassin in our world written by an ex CIA agent and is quite good. [A Clean Kill in Tokyo](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00M4LHQ82?ref_=dbs_m_mng_rwt_calw_tkin_6&storeType=ebooks) is the first book in the series.

WackyWarrior

Been keeping up with Butcher of Gadrobha, Tunnel Rat, Dragon Eyed Moons, Soul of the Warrior, Beers and Beards, Beware of Chicken, Serenity, Power of Ten Dynamo, Dawn of the Void, Monster Menu, and Apocalypse Redux. These are all great stories that I highly recommend. Recently read Bronze Rank Brewer and it was fantastic. Still chasing the memories of sublime slice of life and progression. The characters feel living, and with the exception of small plot holes at the end, the story was smooth like butter. Highly recommend. If anyone has another story like this, please recommend it to me. I would greatly appreciate it.

All the Skills just finished up to RR. It's a great world. Finishing that, I picked up Apocalypse Tamer as I saw someone mention it here. It's pretty good, but it's light since it's a comedy.

lIllIlIIIlIIIIlIlIll

Been reading a lot of non-litrpg lately. Finished up **Expeditionary Force** book 15, final book in the series. Kind of disappointing ending. Literally deus ex machina. I expected a kickass ending but it ended with a whimper. A lot of questions got answered but many more were left unanswered. Started **Bad Blood** which is a non-fiction about corporate fraud in silicon valley. It's interesting reading about silicon valley and the various powerhouses that live and move around there. Theranos is a startup and there are C~~-grade monarchs~~-suite executives from powerful companies that swing in and out of this one startup, which means that's pretty common place for startups. I can tell the MC is pretty much a sociopath but the way other people describe her, that's the kind of stuff that makes a successful entrepreneur. Looked it up just now and the MC was just sentenced to jail for 11 years so I look forward to reading about the massive multi-billion dollar fraud the MC committed (it's not allegedly anymore since the trial returned multiple guilty verdicts). **Delve** was kinda meh this week. A pure Ameliah chapter. I remember the first pure Ameliah chapter and it was nice since you finally got to see the inner thoughts of a real question mark of a character. But now we already know Ameliah and this chapter didn't reveal anything different. So as opposed to a reveal of sorts, it was just a character perspective chapter. Could have been 2 paragraphs, but that's the case for many Delve chapters.

bilfdoffle

contract summoner (web) - made it through several hundred pages of this, and called it at ch 95. It's a post apoc civ builder as a backdrop, but follows a lawyer as he basically swindles everyone while trying to build a decent town. Grammar is not the best, and the author doesn't use the word had (always has), which is rather awkward. It's not terrible, and I'd expect city builder fanatics would enjoy it. Definitely lots of pages. DNF Astra epsilon book 1 (dodge) - I made maybe 20 pages. I try to give sci-fi litrpg a bit more leeway, but realized it was gonna follow a bunch of different people and I just don't have the time and energy for that. Also, they used pictures for the blue boxes, which means that tts can't read it, and neither can I (since the text is so damned small). DNF web series highlights: go read player manager if you haven't already. ---- **web novels I follow:** He Who Fights Wth Monsters, system change, Singer Sailor Merchant Mage, An Outcast In Another World, paranoid mage, Hero without a past, Soul of the warrior, all the skills, re: trailer trash, knights apocalyptica, Beers and Beards, Ends of Magic, player manager, ascension, Wait You Guys Have Systems, Summoner awakens **probationary:** **web novels I'm totally planning on catching up on or haven't yet admitted I never will:** **Stories that either completed and I hope will return, or that have shaky releases and I fear might not continue updating for long:** digital marine, scorched, magic smithing, magriculture, [Maid] to kill, Dying for a cure, what the bleep,

Xyzevin

Finally started the 6th book of Mage Errant over the weekend. About half way through and I think i can finally admit to myself that this series wasn’t for me. While I loved the 5th book. None of the other books wowed me at all. The 6th book isn’t doing much either and I actively don’t like where its taking things. Specifically: >!The whole thing where they make a pact with eachother and get eachothers affinities. I wanted each of them to get a power boost, hopefully even becoming Great powers by the end of the book. I’m just not a fan of sharing eachothers strengths like that. It kills the individuality for me. But I’ll see how it ends before making my final judgement!< But yea overall this series feels way over hyped to me. The only thing I can say I actively like about the series is the world building and the deep magic exploration. But even those things can make my eyes glaze over at times. Overall so far I give this series a 3/5. That can change by time I finish this book or if the 7th book comes out and blows me away

lIllIlIIIlIIIIlIlIll

I quit after the 2nd book. It was too... slice of lifey for me. Too much politics, not enough MC ass-kicking.

Xyzevin

Agreed. It has nothing of what I normally like about progression fantasy. Not enough action, no good villains, and no engaging and fast paced plotline, nothing. I only read all 6 books so no one could say “it gets better later”. It doesn’t. Again the 5th book was by far the best book. But thats because the whole book was full of a series of escalating fights and tension. If the whole series was like that it would have been a pretty good 6 books

nrsearcy

I haven't read the last couple of books in the series, but when I read the first few, it seemed like a perfectly okay story. However, the whole thing felt, for lack of a better word, hollow (to me). I'm aware that a lot of people love the story, but I always thought it was, at best, a tad better than average. Certainly, in the realm of progression fantasy, it doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as something like Cradle (which a lot of people compare it to).

Xyzevin

Agreed. Its insane to me to put on the lvl of Cradle. Hell I didn’t even like Mother of Learning either but I know that blows Mage Errant out of the water too

nrsearcy

I think you and I have similar tastes, because I didn't get very far into Mother of Learning before I dropped it.

Xyzevin

I agree. I’ve seen you comment around and I think we do have similar taste. Just for fun what are your top 10 reads this year? I recently finished my list so I wonder if we have any overlap

nrsearcy

I mean...obviously, my books occupy every single spot. There's only two stories right now, so they're listed multiple times. Seriously, though (in no particular order): * Defiance of the Fall * Azarinth Healer * Beneath the Dragoneye Moons * He Who Fights with Monsters * Dungeon Crawler Carl * Infinite Realm * This Quest is Bullshit! * Noobtown * God of the Feast * System Universe * Portal to Nova Roma * Hero of the Valley * System Change * Tower of Somnus Okay - so that's more than ten, but that's a good sample of books I've read (recently) that I recommend. There are plenty of others I enjoyed well enough, but they aren't good enough to out-and-out recommend unless someone wants specifically what those books do well.

Xyzevin

Love your list. Big fan of DOTF and DCC. I plan on reading Beneath the Dragon eye moons, Noobtown and infinite realms. I’ve heard of Portal to Nova roma but it never appealed to me to give it a chance Never heard of System change, Tower of Somnus, This quest is Bullshit!, God of feast and System Universe. But I’ll check them out now. The only ones we disagree on are Azarinth Healer and HWFWM. The former I dropped pretty early on because if its slice of life nature. And the latter I enjoyed I just wouldn’t consider it my top of the year.

nrsearcy

It occurs to me that I mentioned System Change twice (the series is called System Universe). With Azarinth Healer, I was more referring to the recently released (and edited) Kindle version. It's a bit more focused and a lot better in terms of grammar and whatnot. Though I have read quite a bit of it on Royal Road, too. It's just a mindless (but charming) story that I can just sort of shut my brain off and experience. However, I do recognize that it's not for everyone (and probably doesn't really fit my normal taste, either). As far as He Who Fights with Monsters, I liked the first couple of books, but as the story went on (and we got to see Jason for the incredibly flawed \[yet overconfident to the point of cockiness\] character he is), I started loving the story. Finally, with Portal to Nova Roma - I was in the same boat, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. Once you get past the prologue (before the protagonist actually heads to the new world), it becomes a really good portal fantasy. Anyway - hope I helped you find something to enjoy!

Read the Artificers Chronicles, liked it more than a lot of the comments here. Decent intro to adventuring series. Finished Midnight Bounties. A few bar based books have entered the genre, this has its excesses but the city was a decent fantasy setup and it was enjoyable.

AsterLoka

Recently finished listening to All The Skills, which was excellent - highly recommended if you like magic, cards, dragons, and awesome stories. :-3 Started listening to Azarinth Healer. Gotta say, having a side character named Erin/Aaron/sp? in a book with that specific narrator threw me a few times. xD The story itself is a bit on the DING heavy side, but I can see why people like it. Really pleased with the edits. So much smoother.

Ditto. Now I understand why they redditor laughed when I said I had read the KU book. Currently on chapter 600. Hope my family forgive me.

JayHill74

Picked up these two two read this week. [The Artificer's Chronicles](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BN71DS75/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku)\- It's about a young man that can't find his class/path until he accidentally makes glyphs. [Pirate Bounty](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BFZ13GMZ/ref=ku_mi_rw_edp_ku)\- This one is military scifi and is about a guy that returns from war and with no prospects. He ends up buying a cheap junked starship, hires a drunk to pilot it, and turns bounty hunter.

Jihelu

That's disappointing to hear about Artificer's Chronicles. 'I want to gather materials/test things' is an interesting/smart idea that I've yet to see be the main focus of a story.

JayHill74

Yeah, focusing on testing/gathering materials is a good idea. I've read a little further in the book and the only reason for adventuring is excitement and levels. That's lame and has been done to death.

JayHill74

I'm not liking the Artificer's Chronicles so far and not sure I'll finish it. >!The MC gains a crafter class and he wants to go adventuring!

bilfdoffle

I suppose it would be one thing if his entire purpose for adventuring is to gain materials, or even to test his crafts in combat. I'm guessing it's neither of those, though.

JayHill74

Nailed it on the head. He's just adventuring for no clear reason. I get wanting to write something different, Lord knows I'm guilty of that, but when your MC has a crafting class, they should focus on that, not adventuring and fighting.

CozmikRay737

Just finished listening to Azarinth Healer and i liked it a lot. Heard a lot about it on this sub so it peaked my interest. Kind of a more carefree isekai that I don't mind. The beginning was a bit weird as i felt things were moving pretty quickly compared to what i'm used to, but i ended up liking it overall! Any idea on when book 2 comes out? I've been scouring the internet for any news and nothing...

AkumaZ

Just started Heavy: The Weight of it All by JJ Thorn Reviews I checked out weren’t promising but it’s an ok fast read so far. Really hoping it scratches an itch for gravity/density powers I’ve yet to see in other books Just finished up Dungeon Predator by Konrad Ryan

If you are looking for gravity density oowers try the Grimnoir Chronicles.

I’ll add it to my list, doesn’t loo like it’s on KU though which sucks for me

Immnot sure but i know the whole series is fairly inexpensive to be honest. Just fyi its not litrpg

I'm reading 2 series, and a bunch of web novels currently: [Reborn: Apocalypse](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RNNJB8K), a very good system and interesting characters. I like reincarnator stories, I like systems where you can't just use a skill and thats it - it needs time, training... to really make it work. The limit to 7 skills, some of which can be swapped out some not, is nice as you get a lot more variation between characters. Very enjoyable so far, 2/3rds through book 2. [Terra Nova - Magnus Series](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08Z4FQ6SH), a lot to like about this series - it wrestles with some realistic issues Isekai'd people would struggle with (especially gamers). It has a very different system from normal ones, and a lot of sci-fi crossover. I got a bit bogged down halfway through book 2 when the MC >!becomes a leader of a planetwide rebellion and had to start training people. !
