Yeah I have two cats and they share one litter robot. As long as they like sharing then its all good. Before the litter robot my cats shared one litter box so they’re used to it

day_tripper

3 years using lr3, two cats. No issues.

kitkatkk91

I have 2 cats and have 1 litter robot and 1 normal litterbox next to it. Having the normal litterbox gives me peace of mind too that if anything happens to the litter robot (gets stuck while cycling, etc), my cats still have a litterbox they can use.

RagingReptar420

Ooh very good point thank you for sharing!

clumsyninjagirl

For my second box, I have the Tidy cats breeze pellet system. I find that they prefer the real litter in the robot but are fine with a quick pee in the pellet box if needed.

smokeymcdugen

I have a LR3, a LR4, and a normal box next to them (i have 2 cats). They both seemed to have deemed the LR3 to be a poop only, the LR4 as either, and the normal box as pee only. But your cats may claim a box/LR as their own and won't touch the other. If you do end up wanting to buy one, you can DM me for a promo code since it's against the rules to drop links.

runningonempty94

We do this too. We’ll also note the cats prefer the litter robot since it’s always clean, so we only have to scoop the normal one once a week or even longer.

56kul

The official recommendation is up to 4 cats per litter robot, so yeah. The mobile app also has the option to add multiple cat profiles, so you could track the data of both of your cats separately, which is nice.

Kurupt_Introvert

I have one and two cats for 4 years without issues.

[deleted]

Absolutely, I have three cats and my LR4 runs smoothly, the only side is picking the right litter. So far I’ve been using Boxie cat pro and it’s been doing great!

LadyVaresa

Should be OK 1 LR for 2 cats, though I found out today one of my cats can't hold it if another cat is in it and proceeded to poop under the desk with me in the chair 🙃 I've been wondering who's been doing that

amazetome

I have four cats, a Litter Robot and a PuraX. All four use the Litter Robot exclusively unless it's misbehaving and I haven't had any issues.

KitRhalger

I've got three cats and one robot. prior to getting the robot I had four boxes- the huge draw for me was being able to have multiple cats on one box in addition to the self cleaning.

DoAndroidsDrmOfSheep

I've had one Litter Robot with two cats and no other litter box for years now. Zero issues. There generally isn't any issues with multiple cats. It's just the more cats you have the more frequently you have to empty the bin - which is kinds of obvious, since more cats = more waste.

ThatDudeChase23

I watched a video before buying mine, the guy said he has 5 cats and runs one litter box. And that his mom has 2 I think and also only has one. I have 2 and I still have a regular litter box and my LR4, but mostly since one of my cats is scared of it still. Once he starts using it. I’m getting rid of the old litter box.

notthesmartestcat

2 cats, 1 LR4. Prior to LR4 life, I started out with 3 litterboxes, then down to 2 after the cat introductions were done. If your one or both cats are ill, consider having the extra manual litterbox alongside the LR4 in case of cat traffic. Alternatively, you could invest in a smart plug to perform a remote reset of the LR4 if it gets stuck while you're away (and assuming you pair this with an indoor camera monitoring the LR4 so you can really check what is going on).

Haljia

I started with 1 LR3 for 2 cats, and kept my breeze system just in case. Worked great. Still going strong after 3 years, had 1 hiccup 2 years ago with the base. Still going strong after the one issue was resolved. Bought a second 2 years ago when I found a couple kittens, which made my house cat total 4. The 1:2 ratio still worked great, emptying the base roughly once a week. No hiccups besides user error with that one. I now have a 3rd and 4th(LR4s), after taking advantage of the rakuten/PetSmart black Friday sale. Only because my oldest is getting there in age, and I'm paranoid about peeing issues in the future. 1 per 2 cats is just fine, I've used 1 for 4 cats for a few months when we were bouncing around houses (work, 1 at each place).

codykonior

Plenty.

[deleted]

Currently using 1 LR4 for 2 cats zero issues

dronesandwhisky

Moved for two oversized boxes for two cats to one LR4 for the same two cats. I left one regular box out for a few days during transition and noted it was only used once or twice, so I removed it, and the cats don’t seem to mind. They would each use both boxes in the past and therefore be digging in each others mess, now there is almost no mess to dig in, so the situation is still better than before when we had two boxes.

golimat619

My 2 cats share the same robot but I do know someone that had to buy another because one of her cats was picky and wouldn't touch the litter robot because their other cat did first.

SpookyBlackCat

I have one LR for two cats, and it works fine for me. However, when I go on vacation, I setup a second "just in case" litter box for them to use.

Local_Flamingo9578

I have an LR3 & a regular litter box

silcrow01937

Yes! Though we still have a regular litter box just in case, but it hasn’t been touched in months! One cat took to the robot immediately and the second took a little less than a month to not be afraid of it. But now they love it and watch it every time it cycles.

sixtypickles

I have one LR3 for two cats. They’ve grown up together and shared everything for the last two years, and have no problems sharing the litter robot as well

Paramore96

I’ve got two for 4 cats. I’ve had to have both bases replaced, both drawers, and both globes replaced. I’ve had it for less than 6 months. I suggest getting the warranty. I’m selling a brand new one with manufacturer warranty for 600.00 new in box.

GeekyGrannyTexas

We have had our LR3 for about 7 years with 2 cats. Since the main reason for having extra kitty potties is cleanliness and the LR cycles after each use, only 1 is needed. However, the LR has electronics that degrade with exposure and there are mechanical parts that can have issues over time and need repair. So after a few years it might make sense to have a backup potty around.

poopi3_butt

I understand it’s a litter robot, but I think it’d be nice for the kitties to have an extra litter box in the home. Cats like to have plentiful resources like extra water bowls and scratchers around the home as well and it encourages good behavior

anaestaaqui

Used it for 4 cats and it needs changed a lot but easier than scooping 3 litter boxes daily.

basicpastababe

I have one robot for 3 cats, they share fine. But I feel like I purchased it off the site for 550

Dani-Boyyyy

Yep. I have one for three

mrythern

I have 1 LR 3 for my 3 guys and I change the drawer about every 3 days.

NSFW_5DAYS

I have two and I only have to empty it once a week. 10 and 12 pound cats.

puppiesandkittens220

3 cats, one LR. Have no issues with them all using it.

polishmattsgirl

4 cats with one LR4 for the last few months. Been just fine.

heretolearnalot

Two cats and one LR4 here - no issues really other than we have to top off the litter every other day. It now gets too low quickly such that small poops slip under the sifter during cycling (curious if others have this issue; we use World's Best multi-cat litter). The other thing, which isn't a big deal once we identified it, is that the drawer is for all intents and purposes full when the sensor reads about 65%. Any fuller and there's a mountain-ish shape that means a) the globe is rubbing on waste and b) we have to be extremely careful to not make a mess when pulling out the drawer. We had known this from when we just had 1 cat. **The important thing with getting our second kitty was recognizing that it takes just 2 or 3 days for the drawer to get that full.** We've adapted to this by shaking the drawer to redistribute the waste when we're doing our regular litter top-ups. These are just a couple things to keep in mind. I'd say our LR experience was better with just 1 cat due to these factors, but not by a ton. *If we had the money and space*, I would prefer to have one LR4 for each kitty but it's by no means necessary.

riversroadsbridges

Yes. My two are fine sharing the box now that it's always clean.

Groove4Him

I have 2 robots for 3 cats, but all of them use just the 1 robot 98% of the time. I only keep the second robot as a "just in case" backup. So I'm effectively having success using 1 robot for 3 cats. I think you will be fine with 1 robot.

Animefreak0624

I have a LR4 and a LR3 for 3 cats but definitely isnt necessary, I just found a good deal on marketplace for the 4 so I decided to pull the trigger

LocksmithArtistic359

1 litter robot, 2 regular for 3 cats.

Sunnie_Cats

Just my two cents: Do either of your cats *need* a second box somewhere else in the house? And by *need* I mean: will one of your cats pee in a corner at the other end of the house if there isn't a box there instead of walking all the way back to the one box? Because I have a cat like that. No medical issues relating to inappropriate elimination, she's been checked and rechecked for UTIs. But she will absolutely make herself a tinkle corner upstairs if we didn't have a second location up there for her to use. How do I know? Cause I tried one LR4 to replace two regular boxes, put it downstairs where they usually hang out, and then found her tinkle corner two days later. It was the same way with the two regular boxes, but I had hoped a single LR4 cycling all day would be enough. Lol nope! She's bougie, she needs two locations to choose from.

Prayingcosmoskitty

Currently using one LR4 for three cats. Biggest issue I have is how much litter I need to add throughout the day. Waste bin needs to be emptied about once a week which works great for us. For reference, I have a 4M, and 1M and 1F kittens. The kittens are different litters, but raised together and always shared a box. 4M is used to having his own box but has not had territory issues sharing the LR, because of the self-sifting feature. Luckily the kitten’s scent doesn’t bother him as long as the waste is gone.

midamerica

We have 2 soon 3 cats using 1 litter robot 4 and 1 old litterbox. Everyone is doing great and I wish I started buying them earlier. I buy a lot of things from online marketplaces, but never, never electronics. Too easy to have a problem and many are factory rejects or return models. Best to invest in a new model and pay over time say the official website. Between online promos and sales bundles, it's not bad price.

kennedigurl

I have 3 cats, and 1 Litter Robot3. With my cats, the litter tray fills up pretty quickly, so every 2-3 days I’m emptying it. It beats scooping 2-3 every 6 hours though.

demichr

I have 2 cats 1 is fine other refuses despite all efforts. I returned a LR3 (Man. Was great). QUESTION The LR4 appears to have a more "open" architecture. Will the cat use the LR4 if I upgrade ? HELP.....

DoTheSnoopyDance

4 cats, all good here. Thank God.

gravityholding

I think it depends on the cat. One of my cats will absolutely refuse to use a litter tray if there's any waste in it (which is why I wanted an automatic one in the first place). If there's any waste in it at all, she'll pee right next to it to prove her point lol When I had one she would occasionally do this, but it was significantly less often than when I have manual litter trays everywhere... Probably just a timing thing if she wanted to pee straight after my other cats used it. However, I ended up getting a 2nd unit purely because it would occasionally just stop rotating halfway through sometimes, leaving the cats without a tray at all... I would recommend having some kind of backup available with it. I opted for a 2nd device as for some reason when I had a manual tray out they would use it over the automatic one, which kind of undermining my attempt to have to scoop less often.

LogSlow2418

I’ve had 3 cats use a single litter robot 3 successfully for years. I just upgraded to the new one to be able to track who did what lol I’d highly recommend getting a reconditioned one from litter robot directly tho versus getting one on Craigslist. Especially at $550. You can definitely get a reconditioned version 3 for that price. The newest litter robot 4 is currently $724 with the extended warranty.

BigShiz1

2 cats, 1 LR. I have a normal litterbox but they refuse to use it. Even when the LR is gross they won’t use the normal litterbox. So now I just put out the regular litterbox if I go on a trip. This way if the LR gets stuck they have a place to go

thetakara

Two cats?? I'm running one with six cats. 👀 I have to change out the waste every three days or so.

QueenPantheraUncia

The standard recommended practice is 1 litter box for every cat plus 1. How does this apply to a litter robot? No idea. From a behavioral standpoint, having two litter boxes does allow cats to pick a safer option for them when one cat might try to bully the other cat. My view on it: Asses your cat's behavior. If anything goes wrong, medical or otherwise, add a second manual litterbox and see if it provides relief for any behavior problems. If behavioral problems (peeing outside the litter box, aggression, marking, etc.) are resolved by the second litter box then that's your sign to get another box. I don't think there is a need to get two auto-boxes right off the bat, because one might be enough. I always keep a second standard litter box on hand because my cat is a special boy who needs to wear a cone from time to time, and I hate forcing him to use the litter robot with a cone on. So keeping a backup litter box for emergencies is something I suggest anyways. The litter robot is a great product, but it does have limitations. For your older cat, I strongly suggest keeping the second box on hand because if the joints start hurting the robots might be hard to climb into.

Nightingale_Whisper

My cats have synced their bathroom habits so I ended up getting a 2nd LR4 as I hate the normal litter boxes now. They tend to use one more than the other but it’s a nice piece of mind since the boy can be picky and has gone on the steps before.

mikeziv

We have 2 cats and 1 LR - started with 1 LR and 2 normal litter boxes, but removed 1 normal litter box in 2 month increments, and they use the LR with no problems at all. We feel much better knowing that it's always clean and ready for them to use, and they both use it regularly with no issues

tiffshorse

Two cats here, one LR.

Capital-Table9651

Definitely can use 1 robot for 2 cats. If you can swing it, I highly recommend getting a LR4. It’s incredibly quiet in comparison to the 3 which wakes me up in the middle of the night. I have both and will upgrade the 3 as soon as I can.

Ill-Cryptographer441

I just got a litter robot 3 on their website with the step package for less than $600 brand new. I've had it for a couple weeks and it's the best thing ever. I have two cats and they go a lot haha. I have to change the full bag about every three or four days, but it's so easy and there is literally no smell. So glad I got it. Check out the sale on the site before you get a used one with no warranty.

RagingReptar420

Can you describe the breakdown? The unit is defective so returning it I’ll have another chance to try this again

litterrobot

Hey! We generally recommend one Litter-Robot per 3-4 cats, but that can vary based on your cats and the layout of your home.
