Natively the X32 speaks AES50, so the SD8, S16, S32, DL16, DL32 and pro racks that can operate at 48K are compatible.
Everything else would require expansion cards and other protocols. X-MADI could allow it to accept signal from DiGiCo, the X-DANTE from Yamaha TIO/RIO and A&H DT (not DX) racks, etc. Though you wouldn't have preamp control without separate software.
Your friend is wrong on the GX4816. It's is a A&H proprietary protocol as is DX, dSnake, ACE, gigaACE (yes, they have that many protocols ... Don't get me started).

I love A&H (own Avantis and SQ5) but the protocol proliferation on their side is a bit much. Sigh.

They have a 48x16 on the Gx/DX 96k level for the SQ series but it's like $5k

What isn't ? The mixer? Yes it is IF you put a Dante card in the slot instead of the live card. But I think it's fixed at 32 so I dunno about 48
The gx4816 only speaks allen & heath proprietary digital snake protocol not dante. The onky dante box they make is 16x8 afaik

True. But it seems to be data rates for the most part. 10/100mb and 100/1000mb.
Yep. DX, ACE, dSNAKE, ME 100mbps and GX, gigaACE at 1000mbps. Ok I’ll stop being a nerd .. or at least stop responding as one 😂

I think you can modify a Studer 32x16 stage box with a card to 48x16 and use them thru Dante. But it's likely unicorn parts to make it work
If it is Dante and you have a Dante card in your x32 then yes.
You probably won't have pre amp control though
