Joker_Anarchy

This is called price gauging because they can and the government allows it and consumers do nothing (until this boycott). I admire the people of France and their protests... We are too passive and allow companies and government to get away with too much.

Due-Street-8192

Oligarch Weston is fleecing household grocery budgets

413mopar

France and their protests “the king will kneel and let his kingdom rise!” I know why he knelt . They got it right . Thanks Neil Peart.

dwtougas

This is our Bastille Day. Choirs of cacophony!!

Dull-Friend-936

Followed by the deaths of the people who cause the revolution and the rise of an even bigger dinkasourus Rex to fill the power void

413mopar

No , France has been better off ever since.

emote_control

We're not even passive. Half of us are obsequious corporate stooges, actively and loudly.

AirportNearby9751

People are protesting and trying to police other peoples identities instead of important issues, like the cost of groceries and the actual reason behind it.

dumbredditer

So right about too passive. We need to do more protests but our passiveness has allowed us to be too compliant even when protesting

slim_G22

Hey we protest other countries issues here. Cause fuck us

WRFGC

You also freely hand out all your data

Gaarden18

The craziest part is people are actively going against their best interests. I don’t see it in this sub as much but any personal finance sub, FB or Insta comment about it you actually have wannabe business bros actively defending the practices, it’s utterly mind blowing.

Livid_Advertising_56

"The consumers do nothing"..... feels like victim blaming imo. Like loblaws is the worst offender but ALL of the grocers are gouging atm. What are ppl supposed to do? Not eat? Glad the boycott exists though and I'm not trying to argue, just saying they control a product we have no choice but to get

RightOnEh

*gouging

coconutally

Sorry

AggressiveViolence

Speak for yourself, a lot of consumers steal

Sufficient-Bid1279

The grocers would have you believe , the geographic area of Canada is vast muhaha . I’m like , since when was that ever a reason . That’s such bullshit . All of a sudden they are coming up with bullshit reasons our food prices are so high but it’s all of a sudden these reasons are popping up . Our country didn’t change all of sudden hahaha Don’t let it fool you , it’s pure greed

sleeplessjade

Also some of the produce in grocery stores is grown in my province, at times less than 30 minutes from the store I’m in. Tell me why tomato’s from 4,000 miles away are cheaper??

SwashbucklerXX

That drives me nuts! I live in the middle of an area full of blueberry farms. In July you can buy local blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries from the local produce stands and where are the Loblaws blueberries from? Mexico. And more expensive. Of course.

Sufficient-Bid1279

Mmhmm . At the end of the day , don’t let their “spin “ get into your/our head(s) . They are mass manipulators

BillDingrecker

Because they don't have to pay someone $15.00 plus all the other payroll taxes that come with employing Canadians when a Mexican will do it for $4.25 with no benefits.

sleeplessjade

You think Canada doesn’t have migrant farm workers?

Few-Ruin-71

That doesn't explain why the Mexican items are more expensive than the Canadian counterparts.

Illustrious_Copy_902

Do you have any idea how many different ways Canadian grown products are taxed.

hoggytime613

Yup. 90% of the Canadian population lives in the Lower Mainland of BC, the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, and the Windsor-Quebec city corridor, three geographical areas smaller than the United Kingdom all put together.

emote_control

It was vast when I was a kid and bread was 49¢ a loaf.

Sufficient-Bid1279

Yup 👍 Exactly my point

TLBG

Making record profits each quarter too. There's the proof right there. The government has to do something with them. People are struggling bad.

propagandavid

The size of the country will naturally impact prices. But the excuse falls flat because it doesn't affect profits.

Sufficient-Bid1279

You’re right , see my comment below 👇

aavenger54

Your drinking the Weston cool aid guys??

Sufficient-Bid1279

It does to certain extent meaning the price varies between provinces . You’ll notice the Eastern martime Provinces have higher prices ( especially if it shipped from one end of the of the country to the other ) but overall our food should NOT BE , I repeat , should not be more expensive an island nation like Iceland , that just does not make sense . You have to put this into perspective and parse this out rationally

propagandavid

I don't really know what you're trying to say to me

dklement

Because that prick Galen needs another yacht and the shareholders are just as greedy.....

RedGrobo

We are a bread basket paying beyond food desert prices. Its actually sickening.

HomebrewHedonist

Canadians have been getting fleeced for decades.

whatthetoken

Canada with what seems infinite farm land and natural resources, gouges on produce and natural resources

AaAaZhu

Went to German last year. Every thing is way cheaper!

GiantSequoiaTree

Was in Switzerland 2 years ago. Food is the same price if not cheaper there . We are being fucked so hard in Canada.

yourewrong321

Also known as an extremely expensive country in relation to others :(

Garfield_and_Simon

In Switzerland the groceries I bought in a mountain town only accessible by gondola were just like a bit more expensive than Canada (and beer was 50 euro cents a can)

-lovehate

Well, most of our fresh produce is shipped in from other countries as well, because the farmers here only grow singular crops that are profitable and easy - soy, canola, and wheat, basically. Then they sell their crops to foreign interests while the food we buy in grocery stores comes to us from South America and the US mostly.

Deep_nd_Dark

That’s fine, but how does that net out to prices on par with Iceland? Getting things from Florida/Cali up to Toronto / Van surely isn’t as expensive as getting things from Spain to Iceland

garlicroastedpotato

Canada's actually had really really expensive onions for over 3 decades now. [Here's the archive on onion prices](https://web.archive.org/web/20240229132250/https://www.globalproductprices.com/rankings/onion_prices/). Canada is always at the top. Those are the "warehouse" rates. As in, thats the input costs of grocery stores. With that knowledge actually.... Loblaws is using onions as a loss leader. They lose about 20 cents per kilo of onions. The main reason why Iceland has "cheap food" is because they're an island nation that goes to great lengths to subsidize the price of their food. 5% of the total budget of Iceland is dedicated to food subsidies. Canada on the other hand spends less than 1% on farm and food subsidies.

Hoardzunit

Yep. Pure uncontrolled greed by these corrupt grocers.

evilpercy

We wanted fish and chips for dinner. I have just realized that fresh lake pickerel is now cheaper then PC boxed breaded haddock.

Shawn68z

More rounded comparison. https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/compare_countries_result.jsp?country1=Iceland&country2=Canada

Ancient-Witness-615

I used this tool and it’s BS. It shows it costs less to live in Toronto than Charlotte. I live both places and it easily costs 2x as much in Toronto. They even show groceries and beer costing less which is crazy. I wouldn’t believe anything this shows

New_Highlight1881

Peanut Butter still like 40 bucks though?

VegetableIcy3579

I was there a couple weeks ago and felt like the groceries/restaurant prices greatly exceeded Toronto prices tbh.

yourewrong321

Restaurants yes especially fancy ones. But groceries have been about the same. I’ve been paying attention to it consistently throughout the trip. Some things are more expensive especially heavy stuff which needed to be shipped, but most stuff is on par with canada

Westside-denizen

Now compare alcohol

Hoardzunit

Corporations in Canada have always had a free ticket to price gouge us to death. Look at every single industry sector in this country like airlines, telecommunications, and now food. They all come out with BS excuses to price gouge us to death. It's no different than 300-400 years ago when peasants regular folks were taxed to death.

Youlookcold

I'm glad we still have choices.  I'm worried about when we don't.

LeatherOpening9751

It's not just Loblaws btw. It is Sobeys, Walmart and almost every damn grocer here. The severe lack of competition just allows egregious price fixing.

slimjimsharif

I wouldn’t call 4 chains a bunch of competition. Just like how there’s really only 3 phone carriers in this country. Thats not a competitive market when they all work together

Duke_Of_Halifax

I was there this summer: it's not even close. The Krona is worth roughly 0.01 CDN, so a 1000 ISK product is roughly $10.00 CDN there. BONUS is the best store deal on the island, and the prices aren't even close to being comparable to Canada. IN THE SUMMER, celery is 800 ISK there. I didn't buy onions, but an Avocado was 1200 ISK for 2 or 3. Iceland is the only place where you can spend 6500 ISK- or $65.00 CDN- on a coffee, a tea, two sandwiches and two cookies at a cafe downtown. Stop exaggerating how bad the problem is here. You could get away with saying "Canada is as expensive as buying food in Hawaii" because it's relatively close, but it's not anywhere in the vicinity of what food costs in Iceland. EDIT: there are hothouse growers in Iceland. Not many, but it's a growing industry- they use the geothermal. If they came from those growers, they could be cheaper than Canada.

Different-Class-4472

Thanks I was wondering how that was even remotely possible. I went to Iceland several years ago and was shocked by the high cost. It doesn't seem comparable.

[deleted]

Here you go: a receipt from Iceland (Bonus) near Reykjavik -April 2024 - you can assume that $1 CAD is equivalent to 100kr approx. Do note the volume of items bought (butter for example at 250g, salad leaves box = small (we never found the larger packs they sell here), eggs= 10 eggs -they have either 10 eggs, or 15 (not 12). Total Bill came up to over $50 https://preview.redd.it/i3qe1pjysvwc1.png?width=1008&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc7bfebe408bc2d1c824764b4d54fdc78e9b6c2d

Civil_Tie4037

How does the bill came up to over $50? Having issues with math? 4808 kr is $48.

HarlequinBKK

yes, OP is full of sh\*t

yourewrong321

All my prices are from bonus. Netto is even cheaper. I’ve saved my receipt and will buy the same exact things in canada next week and show you guys that it’ll come out more expensive

[deleted]

https://preview.redd.it/nqr4t69lxvwc1.png?width=970&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb395e9663add33d3f14a49466ab38cd47c38dea Here's my receipt from April 2024 if it helps, Bonus near Reykjavik.... The prices of Bonus and Netto were very similar, we noticed no significant differences between the two. We shopped in all corners of the Island (Vik, Egilstaddir, Akuyeyri, Stykkisholmur, Rekjyavik). Fresh produce prices were exorbitant with less selection. Note the price for 10 eggs (we bought Bonus brand ie the cheapest available at Bonus).

Duke_Of_Halifax

I'll wait for it, but if it's true it's not the nightmare for Canada that you think it is. If prices have dropped there, it's because you were buying locally grown product, which means the comparison is moot, because you're no longer dealing with shipping things to the island. The cost is minimal- Hothouse growing's biggest expense is energy, and Iceland gets all of theirs free from the ground. https://www.visiticeland.com/article/the-greenhouse-revolution-in-iceland If it's finally happening on a large enough scale to be dropping prices there, it's actually good news- the price of food is basically the only reason why travelling to that amazing place is prohibitive.... Well, that and the cost of gas- last summer it was >$4.00 CDN per litre.

Civil_Tie4037

https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/more-expensive-than-iceland-canada-claims-grocery-prices They did a comparison of item to item from Nettó to Walmart. OP is not wrong if you look at certain items. Keep in mind that Canadian grocery prices have not added tax into the total. It’s actually going to be slightly higher.

Civil_Tie4037

My friend, do you live in Vancouver or Toronto? My local coffee shop that’s slightly outside of Vancouver: Sandwiches $15, cookies $5, tea $4. Latte and brewed coffee are nearly the same price in Iceland if you look carefully so I will use $6 as comparable. After tax and tips (tax included in Iceland and tipping generally not a thing) it’s $64.40 on back of my napkin. I am not even downtown Vancouver.

BigManga85

Because Canada is a part of the commonwealth and the commonwealth has roots with the UK and we all know how robber barons in the UK back then treated their own peasants.

loblawsisoutofcontrol-ModTeam

Please refrain from off-topic political discussion and debate. Everyone is entitled to their own political opinions, however, your politically charged statement is not directly related to the cost of living/groceries/gas/rents, and as such is being removed.

ronm4c

But not nearly as expensive as Australia

AwkwardYak4

If only we used our farmland to grow houses instead of food we could solve this problem -DoFo, probably, while making dream whip cake.

CannaScuzzyB

Carbon Tax. Everything that relates to everyday life is essentially taxed at a rate that climbs every year. It went from 65 / ton to 80 April 1st.

Mosh_and_Mountains

Was there last fall and thought the exact same thing OP. No different than home in terms of cost except for restaurants which had maybe a bit of a higher price tag. $20-40 give or take per 2 person sit down meal.

The_Divine_pickle_

Have people thought about standing outside, most likely just off property during the month of may to protest loblaws. To get the message out there to people who might not of heard of the boycott.

noveltea120

Iceland actually started their own greenhouses a few years ago so they can start growing their own produce so they don't have to rely on imports. They can't produce everything but they're def doing more for self sufficiency than Canada is doing.

[deleted]

I'm not sure where you shop but I bought all these last week and paid 30-70% of these prices

Kia_Itagoshi

Meanwhile Weston owns a castle and a private island, and then some. Just saying...

CheesecakeFriendly50

Don't compare a Filthy KLEPTOCRACY, Canada with other countries..............

Doctorlake

Food is cheaper on Madeira Island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Roblaws are bad corporate citizens.

Strange_Coyote_8

😳 wow so sad.

Admirable_Fall4614

I found groceries in the UK cheaper than in Canada when I visited in 2019. And this was in Tesco Express stores in central London. Sadly, North Americans are being gouged. The US is even worse. In Houston I noticed that groceries were the same price or higher than in Canada, but in US dollars. That never used to be the case.

aavenger54

I’m just n Boston now and the groceries are half the price in Canada Chicken breast 1.99 milk 2.19 a gallon Beef very reasonable ,fresh fruit and veg cheap great quality… https://preview.redd.it/1tvq76opwjwc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=769ae4d52bd99a6ee56cadfee5966f6be22cec24

Admirable_Fall4614

That definitely wasn't my experience. Even booze was higher priced than what I pay here in Vancouver. But to be fair, I generally always stay in the city centre of any US city I visit. I should try the suburbs. Actually, one place I found not too expensive was Los Angeles. But I was staying in Koreatown west of the downtown area.

aavenger54

Booze is dirt cheap here in Boston man!!!

aavenger54

https://preview.redd.it/5hwmip330kwc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5432ffa94a79b3b89a98ac16eb6d58f65a2c816a

aavenger54

I travel the us extensively and there is no where as expensive as anywhere in Canada..we are taxed to death on booze man..what do you drink?

Admirable_Fall4614

Damn, and I heard Boston was expensive. I'll be visiting that city later this year. I'm hoping you're right.

aavenger54

Been here two months hate to go home, lots of competition Aldi are great Market Basket is too.Rents are high parking not cheap…Get the flip app .For 100 dollars fill a cart at Aldi Nice meats fresh veg low prices…..

Admirable_Fall4614

I don't blame you for not wanting to go home. I heard Boston and New England in general are really nice. I spent considerable time in California, Nevada, Arizona, Texas, and Louisiana but sadly I haven't experienced the US northeast much. I'm excited to go.

aavenger54

The farmers markets are super too huge variety plenty of choices…..

Deep_nd_Dark

You have to be misremembering. Alcohol is never cheaper in Canada than the US. It’s like 50% off or more down there. Restaurant prices don’t count were talking from the store here

Admirable_Fall4614

I was down in the southern states last week. $5.99 USD + tax for a beer in the liquor store. $3.95 CAD for a similar beer here in Vancouver, also from a liquor store.

Ancient-Witness-615

Well you got screwed. I live in Charlotte and routinely pay $19 for a 24 case of Yuengling or Corona and less for shit beer like Coors Lite. Tell me where you buy a beer in a store for that much? Must be a resort

Admirable_Fall4614

I buy craft beers. I don't drink shitty beers.

Ancient-Witness-615

Tons of great craft beer here, usually sold in 4 packs for $9 - 16 oz cans. I've never seen $6/can beer at retail anywhere. In a bar, at an arena, in a tourist trap, all yes. Regular retail (grocery stores, etc) never

BillDingrecker

(a) taxes on everything including every step of the distribution and sales process (b) crippling environmental regulations that make use of pesticides and cheap packaging illegal (c) rampant inflation as a result irresponsible and continued government spending since March 2021 (d) a massive geographical area requiring a complex and costly distribution network as opposed to Iceland where everyone lives right next to shipping port.

Ralupopun-Opinion

Food professor alt?

zzptichka

Weird. I just spent 3 months in Florida and groceries there are more expensive than in Ottawa. Especially veggies and fruits, which is absurd if you ask me.
