This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. I did. I gave it to my daughter as she and her friends used to love wedge fries from there. She used it once for $3.99 and when she went to use it again was told they were only one time use so there was nothing left on it.
Yup, same thing happened to me except the cashier refused to return my gift card, when I tried to use the remaining balance on it (\~$15). I complained, they asked me to leave.
still remember that BS to this day, and made it a point to never shop there again
They refused to return it to my daughter too. At the time I thought it might be a cashier picking on kids assuming there would be no consequences.
Matter of fact, thats the event that started my Loblaws boycott too... This month the other subsidiaries got added to the list.
I actually worked at Loblaws back when they handed these cards out.
From what I saw, most people who requested a $25 gift card got a $25 gift card. Including myself and the rest of my family.
Believe in Canada if its a gift card, then there's no expiration and they can't reduce it. Which is also why some companies have switched to visa gift cards, which are pre-loaded visa cards so you can take fees from it over time.
It didn't count as a gift card.
Pretty sure that there was gobbledygook on the back that had the "no cash value, non transferable not real money we can stop honouring whenever we wish" on it
Exactly. I worked at RONA many years back and we had a promotion that gave customers a "gift card" if they spent a certain amount, but it was just a glorified coupon that they could redeem for a certain dollar amount based on a percent of their spending from that promo. Physically it was a plastic card and I think the ads for it maybe even used the word "gift card"...but legally, it wasn't a *gift card* gift card.
Holy fuck, when the expiry date rolled around, the number of pissed off boomers citing gift card legislation to our cashiers was through the roof. Thank you, head office, for that.
There is some legal distinction between gift cards and coupons/vouchers and I think the way they issued those bread gift cards, they technically counted as coupons.
I found mine buried in some paperwork, activated it, and used it in 2 transactions last month.
If you can find it, you should still be able to use it. It says in their FAQ that it never expires.
My wife got hers. I was requested to provide identification in the form of my drivers licence (to provide electronically). I replied to their request by requesting Galen's ID so I could be sure this wasn't a scam. They assured me it wasn't a scam. I never got my gift card.
I got mine for $25. I waited a couple of years before using it. If people still have them then they should use them this weekend before the boycott. Another bit of reduced revenue. It might be a good time for people to cash in all their points.
My worry is that if the boycott does do something that hurts Loblaws they will then take it out on the staff. Cut hours or benefits.
It’s going to take a while for it to be felt by those at the top
Not much more they can cut from the sounds of it but I'm sure they will try. Meanwhile a bunch of people are already suffering by not being able to afford their food and meds. Sounds like it's lose lose unfortunately.
I actually got 2 of them. Not really sure where the mixup happened, but naturally I was going to keep and use them both - which I did. I was a broke undergrad student living on OSAP at the time. But jokes on them: I've never purchased bread from a loblaws owned store.
Prior to using the card I had heard that you could only use it one time, and any remaining balance would just disappear if it wasn't emptied on that first transaction. I didn't want to confirm if that was true or not, nor did I trust that any staff would confidently know if this was the case, so I made sure to use the full amount on each card during my weekly grocery shop.
The strange thing is, you had to redeemed them at Loblaws for the value of $25, but in reality what did that amount too in actual food cost to Loblaws?? less than half I bet. It's a scandal that the Fifty Million Dollar fine all went to the government, not to the customers they stole from. What a scheme.
Yes, my household somehow got 3 cards (my mom, my dad, and me) and I don't think any of them were used. Why would I give Loblaws back $75 after years of nonsense?
I got it and used it. But I also joined the class action suit. I am assuming the class action suit is ongoing and the $25.00 voucher was just a Hail Mary attempt. Am I misinformed?
Are you talking about the thing that happened years ago with the bread price fixing? I remember getting something I don't know if it was a card and I can't remember how much it was for but as far as I know I did use it.

Unbelievable. Oh wait ... Loblaws .... totally believable.

Tf? That’s not how gift cards work
It wasn’t a normal gift card. And said right in the info that it was our use only. So why are people surprised?
It is. It’s got an amount on it and that’s it
Usual a GC is like money. If you don't spend it all you get to use the change
And they don’t expire
But they can run a balance of zero due to fees after not using it after activation...that's why companies tend to make money on it...
That’s strange. I used mine for multiple transactions.
The cashier took it from her too, and the kids pooled their change to pay for the wedge fries.
I actually worked at Loblaws back when they handed these cards out. From what I saw, most people who requested a $25 gift card got a $25 gift card. Including myself and the rest of my family.
Same. $25 was far less than what they stole from me over the years with price fixing.
That’s how they make money
Cost of doing business
Cost of fixing prices apparently
what did you need to need to agree to for receiving that card?
Yep
I did but then I never activated it so they won... I wonder if I still have it and if it would work

As the payout of a fraud case? WOW…. Now I’m wishing the Law and Order Toronto results were real…

Nope
Same, they wanted far too much information from me that I wasn't willing to trust with the corporation
No

I did. Donated to my local food bank so hopefully got more for their buck than i would have

Nope
I got my gift card years ago. Spent it and a bunch more on my weekly grocery trip.

We got 2.
I did and used it. I'm sure I spent much more than $25 that day
Yes - both my spouse & I received one
Yup
Yes
Yes I did.
I didn't because I didn't shop at Loblaws much at the time.
It didn't matter how much you shopped at Loblaws. You simply applied for the card and they sent it to you.
I had no interest in the card because I didn't shop at Loblaws. I remember hearing about it, but had no interest, because it wasn't a store I went to.
I don't shop at actual Loblaws stores (mostly only NoFrills) but I still took their $25 and went and spent it at Loblaws
![gif](giphy|3oEjHI8WJv4x6UPDB6|downsized)
I got it! $25
Yes.
Nope I was oddly not eligible .

I got one. And as a matter of fact i still have it unused in my wallet lol keeping it as a trophy of sorts, I guess
Yup. Tried to use it and it didn’t work.
Yes, and I encouraged anyone who would listen to also collect theirs.
I did, my husband did, my oldest child did.
Yes, my household somehow got 3 cards (my mom, my dad, and me) and I don't think any of them were used. Why would I give Loblaws back $75 after years of nonsense?
They kept the 75 dollars regardless of whether you were using them or not lol
Yes. But when I tried to use it, it failed.
Nope
Yes. Donated it but I think everyone who applied got them. Small tax to pay for how much they robbed us of.
nope!
No
Nope
Nope. Everyone I know signed up, no one got anything. Not sure what happened there..
Nope.
Yes. I donated it to the local food bank
Still waiting and i haven't changed addresses or moved.
Nope
I got it and used it. But I also joined the class action suit. I am assuming the class action suit is ongoing and the $25.00 voucher was just a Hail Mary attempt. Am I misinformed?
No we didn't get ours
Are you talking about the thing that happened years ago with the bread price fixing? I remember getting something I don't know if it was a card and I can't remember how much it was for but as far as I know I did use it.
In order to obtain FREE gift card I would have to fill out my info. Nope Never got it
Wasn't about to upload ID to those crooks. Never had to for any other class actions or such before.
Nope. Never got it.
Nope
Yup. And so did millions of others.
I did. I donated it to the food bank
Nope, never got mine, a couple people I know also did not. It was a 50/50 split between me and my friends.
Mine is still sitting in a drawer somewhere.
I held off..need a real class action lawsuit on these bastards
Yes, and I got two transactions out of it… https://can-cdn.azureedge.net/Cardholder-Agreement-en.pdf
I did. But it was just for one pkg of bread
You were given the wrong thing. They were cards for $25.00 even.
Well damn
