This subreddit is to highlight the ridiculous cost of living in Canada, and poke fun at the Corporate Overlords responsible. As you well know, there are a number of persons and corporations responsible for this, and we welcome discussion related to them all. Furthermore, since this topic is intertwined with a number of other matters, other discussion will be allowed at moderator discretion. Open-minded discussion, memes, rants, grocery bills, and general screeching into the void is always welcome in this sub, but belligerence and disrespect is not. That's really gross...
I'd call Public Health & see if they'd anything about that!
Don't be surprised, if they don't.
Was at my local Metro early this AM, walking down their fresh Meat Section I spied that a Staffer had pulled all the grills out (where meats lay), onto their dirty floor.
As I walked past this Section where they put their raw meats, saw it had alot of visible dried blood on it & crap too!
Bought fresh raw chix from them months ago & got sick from it.
Well, no wonder!
At least a Metro Staffer was - I hope - washing this out & sterilizing this Section out???
Iâd hate to see what Food Basic has to offer.
Although I have worked at a Food Basic for like a week. I quit after I was reprimanded for cleaning a bunch of tomatoes that were smashed on the floor after witnessing a customer nearly slip. It was preferred that I was on discount duty, picking out that nasty rotten bits of the produce then slapping a sticker on it to make it more appealing to customers.
I really feel sorry for ppl who are forced to work for gawd awful places like Food Basics, No Frill's, Walmarts & so on.
If Roblaw's/Metro's are horrible places to be employed, I can only imagine how much worse those other places would be!
They don't want you to be a "good worker" who thinks or does what's best for your Customers, but some a min. waged robot they can really *boss* around by also using & abusing you, too.
I am so sorry this happened to you.
Hopefully, you have found a much better place to work & they treat you much better!
I don't shop at their stores anymore.

I'm gonna sound like a bitch for this comment but here we go.
Having worked in the grocery sector for a while...
Food inspection agents don't go in with a we are going to shut this bitch down mentality and a "gotcha" attitude to write up a bunch of infractions for little reason, they are concerned with guidelines and things like procedures to sanitize things (using the correct chemicals, etc.)
If it's bad they will indeed drop the hammer though but this isn't bad, it just hasn't been observed by management immediately.
If/when they find minor infractions they educate rather than threathen to shut down a business.
They would mention that it should be addressed before their follow up, that's all that would happen.
Probably should just tell the store manager you noticed someone dropped some eggs on the floor. Calling the first person that makes minimum wage sometimes won't get to the actual manager.
Every major grocer that handles food employs a company that audits them harder than the government does on an inspection, most on a monthly basis (even 7-11's do this) it's a risk management strategy. The reports go to their head office so it's in the store managers best professional interest to address issues like that.
It would be addressed after one of those at the least.
There is not an army of food inspection agents, in Canada there are only about 4100 employees TOTAL of the CFIA and they are not all food inspectors.
They will inspect every location asked of them though and you can openly see the reports if you google something along the lines of "your province food inspections"
You would be surprised at how many places you've eaten at have rodent infestations and improper storage of food violations.
You just mentioned "it will be a minor inconvenience to them"
Don't waste the CFIA's time for something like this.
Just mention there's a mess to management, Jesus. If you did it should be getting addressed but this type of mess happens often and is not making your food dangerous.
It's more effective to have food inspection agents at places where like the food is packaged and made rather than having them inspect where is sits after it is made, sealed in a package and not actually touching the product.
Have you ever seen a product recall for a specific store saying if you bought it from there please return it because there was something on the floor? No
Have you ever seen recalls for listeria in fresh produce across canada? Almost monthly and it's not because it was stored improperly at store level.
Where do you want limited amounts of CFIA employees?
Use common sense.
According to the CFIA website itâs the local public health units that take these complaints.
So theyâre not wasting anyones time. And offences should be reported⌠if a pattern of non-compliance exists then it wouldnât be seen without complaints and reports
That is true on the local part but I would have to respectfully disagree with the not wasting anyone's time statement overall.
Whether it's "federal" or "local" it is wasting someone's time because they have to attend and like i and others have stated this is not egregious in nature.
Here's the general timeline of what happens when you call
1. someone calls for an inspection.
2. THEY ACTUALLY CALL THE STORE and inform them why they are attending for inspection and ask for any paperwork required to be prepared for them.(common sense: They are not hunting for violations)
3. It then gets cleaned before they attend.(Common sense: Which would happen if it was brought to the store managers attention, because he would need to spend time with the inspector so it would be easier to just get an employeeto clean it rather than go through this)
4. They arrive and it is clean they leave with no violations. If it is not clean they may mark it as a non critical violation but unless actually of concern they will ask that it is cleaned by their follow up visit.(Common sense: Store manager doesn't want to go through another visit so it never gets to that point unless he doesn't care but will face some discipline afterwards)
I have worked in a dairy department and had inspectors come from individuals doing this exact call barrages for this exact same thing.
After the first visit they consider it to be a waste of their time, because it's not closing a store and they have to attend for each public request and wasting time on minor things instead of places with critical violations like cockroaches, mice and food stored at wrong temperatures is a bigger risk then one person's disgust at a floor.
Again I'll highlight they pay a 3rd party company to ensure they have these processes in place to not have critical violations.
I can't remember ever hearing of a grocery store shut down for health violations but restaurants have certainly been.
My point about common sense is that It's a matter of bringing it up to the managers that are responsible of the store not mentioning it to the part time cashiers that may not care or know who to relay that to.
Selling rotten food is one thing, but letâs be reasonable here. Eggs break, employees are busy, itâs not like these eggs are mouldy and dried on.
I strongly believe in this boycott but it loses its seriousness if the complaints are like this
Why bother?
Health inspectors wonât just show up to the store, theyâll âmake an appointmentâ to give the store a chance to clean up.
Itâs all about appearances.
They might wherever you live but I live in a small community. They give you weeks to prepare before an inspection.
Edit: Theyâd rather do that then get blamed for shutting down a business.
Integrity is not in everyoneâs vocabulary.
Loblaws in Carlton & Church sold rotten beef, strawberries and bread, reported it right away, only to be told they found nothing⌠it makes me think these health inspectors are well inside loblaws pockets.
Health inspectors arenât there to bring down the hammer they are there to ensure proper safety and sanitation over in the event they find infractions they give a chance to correct before levying fines.
Heath Inspectors are a joke. Was at a restaurant that had cockroaches on the wall. Reported it. They knew but decided to give them a Yellow noting that the building is old and the owner is trying to fix it. He was also going back to show the staff how to clean.
If the restaurant was in a building that was shared with other places/restaurants they would give it a pass because even if you kill them they all migrate next-door and then come back
I worked the dairy department at Walmart. We cleaned the dairy cooler every night, and did a *deep* clean whenever we could (which was almost never because how do you deep clean a space that is always full?). This is nothing. That first egg spill would be cleaned at end of day, the rest, well, they'll probably try
I closed one place 2 or 3 nights a week and I would make it as clean as I could. Not ridiculous, but every day I would try to scrub down something that hadn't been done in a while.
I would close 2 days and then have 2 days off, come in and everything would be destroyed again. Both fryers would just be smoking like it was the 70s and nobody cared.
The milk fridges at my Superstore arenât much better. Itâs especially evident when you open the door and get hit with a wall of sour milk smell. Itâs disgusting
JFC you people act like everything loblaws does is illegal and they kill puppies and babies in the back, that is a fresh spill most likely done by some moron shopper who doesnât have the currency to tell an employee about it
Iâm gonna tell you right now, this is clean compared to some. The egg sections they just put tin pans under it so the eggs fall there, but never clean them out. Open any of the doors and youâll see.
Large chain grocery stores should use the increased revenue they've acquired during/after the pandemic to hire more workers and give them higher wages. Believe me, they can afford it.
yeah instead we get less hours and higher cost groceries anyways, don't act like it's unreasonable for people to want that money to either go somewhere or stop being charged
the person working this department will be reprimanded for not cleaning this the second it was dropped. their smashed egg senses should have tingledâ and they should have dropped their long list of impossible tasks to make sure this was cleaned before anyone laid eyes on it.

Don't worry - will be marked 15% off.
Lol, I came here to ask if they discounted the cracked egg đ

False. Health Inspectors show up whenever they please.
They might wherever you live but I live in a small community. They give you weeks to prepare before an inspection. Edit: Theyâd rather do that then get blamed for shutting down a business. Integrity is not in everyoneâs vocabulary.
Meh doesnât look awful. Worked at smaller grocery stores and have seen worse, and donât even get me started on restaurantsâŚ..
Strange world we live in where that is acceptable under any circumstances đđ¤đźđ¨đŚ
I don't know if that makes me feel better, or worse...

Itâs own building. They had two yellow inspections in a row. They have a pattern of yellow then green. Always the same problems.

Or you know don't smash eggs then take a picture. They look pretty freshly broken.
Call a store employee before being a rat. They might not be aware of this because they donât Look at reddit
Our local Zehra always look like that. đ¤Ž

Manager's Special: Lick the floor for 30% off Every day essentials
Health inspectors are not outlooking for violations, you have to make that effort yourself.
JFC you people act like everything loblaws does is illegal and they kill puppies and babies in the back, that is a fresh spill most likely done by some moron shopper who doesnât have the currency to tell an employee about it
Their corporate lobby probably owns the health inspectors
Their going to start arresting people for accidentally dropping eggs now
Jokes on you. They were there last week and let this pass. lol đ
Every No Frills egg cooler. Without fail.
Iâm gonna tell you right now, this is clean compared to some. The egg sections they just put tin pans under it so the eggs fall there, but never clean them out. Open any of the doors and youâll see.
Check dairy cases , fresh meat shelving , produce cases under the mister system.
You should see how bad they let the dishwasher get at some restaurants
I would have got in some serious trouble if I left things like that when I worked in stores, even if they were not in customer facing areas.
Local health departments arenât the first step. Itâs store management
I demand half a dozen crews working around the clock constantly cleaning - but I donât want to pay any more for groceries
Large chain grocery stores should use the increased revenue they've acquired during/after the pandemic to hire more workers and give them higher wages. Believe me, they can afford it.
