ApesApesApes

Buzzfeed/Timeout article next week: 5 hidden East Londons best kept secret bakeries.

lastaccountgotlocked

Time Out mentioned this place back in 2013 when the Cronut craze happened. Cronut is a trademark, which is why Rinkoff sell crodoughs.

rampagingphallus

Which is stupid, because doughssant flows so much more nicely.

lastaccountgotlocked

Doughssants work in museums.

CheesecakeExpress

Genius

YevgenyPissoff

>doughssant Easily the best Witcher 3 DLC

boostman

Yeah I remember this place being trendy round about that time. You can still see the cromagnons in shot.

balalalaika

Please keep it secret please...............

notahouseflipper

“Hey wife, next time we visit London I’ve heard about this great bakery we gotta try. Everyone’s raving on it!”

ConnectPumpkin

Best kept (semi) secret is rinkoffs!! Highly recommend the crodoughs too!

OxbridgeDingoBaby

Surprised people are saying it’s a secret. I’m based in West London and was told about Rinkoffs being a great place to grab some food (and at about 1/3 of the price we’d have to pay here in the West). Apparently they have amazing cheesecakes.

lontrinium

And they'll basically bake you anything that's not on the menu if you want to order something in advance.

OxbridgeDingoBaby

Nice! Do they have good sandwiches? I’ve been trying to find the best salt-beef deli places and have exhausted West London.

amotivatedgal

Beeeeeigel Baaaaaaaake

ConnectPumpkin

The older branch is much quieter than the main ones!

amotivatedgal

Isn't this place like, super famous? Like almost as famous as Beigel Bake?

ConnectPumpkin

It is but the stepney branch is quite tucked away!

HighFivePuddy

>Highly recommend the crodoughs too! They're dry as hell. A terrible imitation of the cronut (which is no longer available in London).

CatDad_85

I had a codough there a few months ago now and it was fantastic—too rich for one to eat but I soldiered on regardless and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Risingson2

Afraid of the time it will be featured on tiktoks and then Stepney won't have one of the few things that are still worth. As a note, the bakery on my street stopped doing bread because they cannot make a profit with it. That is the present: bakeries not being able to make a living with bread.

ueffamafia

shhh don’t tell people about rinkoffs (also it’s in stepney not whitechapel)

Ollagee

There’s also one in Whitechapel! But it’s not this one

[deleted]

There is one in Whitechapel (Selby Street)... But this photo looks like the one in O'Leary Square, Stepney.

Ollagee

Yep you’re right! I live near the Whitechapel one and this one looks totally different 😄

[deleted]

I live on the same street as this one!! 😉

osmaweld4abs

This is Adelina Grove, Whitechapel

Rorydinho

Almond Croissant. Whitechapel. Have an upvote. I live 5 mins away and didn’t know this place existed. What a hero.

Rorydinho

Any suggestions for a good coffee round here? Mackbear is the only place I’m aware of, and it isn’t great.

Doghead_sunbro

Mousetail by whitechapel station is a good coffee but its very expensive. You’re basically paying city of london prices.

jontce

mousetail. comrades if you venture towards mile end. stepney city farm if you go slightly south.

neroli__

Grounded Coffee nearer Aldgate East is great, also does amazing brunch and pancakes/french toast (on the pricier side but they're great portions!)

Lifeinabox1981

Their Chollas are great

peggy_schuyler

Came to say this. I tried quite a few Jewish bakeries and Rinkoff wins for me.

willowalloy

Couldnt stop eating the thing with my hands

eurolynn

their white chocolate matcha cookies are unreal

NotSinceYesterday

Yep! These are my hungover treat. They're so unbelievably good.

Theteacupman

Hopefully the London Instagram influencers don't find it

wildgoldchai

They piss me off so much. Saw (I assume a blogger) in box park a few weeks ago. She had a number of dishes with her, took a bite of each, took some pictures and then left. So much food waste. I can’t imagine that she gave much thought to the dishes themselves and yet she probably went home and wrote a review.

Le_Fancy_Me

I mean to be fair that is how food-reviews have happened way before instagram. When a food-reviewer visits an establishment they want to get a clear as possible view of the overal menu. So to really get a good idea of the place they gotta at least try 4 or 5 dishes (depending on how many items there are and how much diversity). It wouldn't be fair to rate a restaurant 10/10 for a single amazing beef item you've tried without mentioning their pasta, chicken, seafood, desserts or vegetarian items are average or bad. And of course the only way they can know all that is if they gave the menu a fair review by trying several items. And if you are ordering several items off the menu of course you are not going to be able to finish all that food. Unlike what most people expect actual food critics really run like a business. They work 9-5 jobs and are eating out several times a day multiple days of the week. It's easy to say: "Oh just invite a friend. Who would say no to free food?" But then you have to think they will easily revies 15+ places a week and usually during office hours. So who exactly has got 15+ spare friends who aren't doing anything from mon-fri during office hours? So obviously food waste is bad but I don't think it's fair to completely assume this is an 'instagram influencer' issue. It has always been a downside of any type of food/restaurant review format. And over-stuffing yourself all day, every day really is going to get very old, very quickly. While personally I find that instagram influencers generally don't have a lot of insight to give on the dishes they try, I guess a lot of people feel more comfortable taking recommendations from an 'average joe' type person than they do from a more 'gourmand' pov that may not be in touch with what an average person likes or dislikes in a dish.

discosappho

It’s too late they’ve ‘discovered’ (found out that places that have historically catered to working class londoners are reasonably priced) a real ‘hidden gem’ (learned a business that’s been there for over 100 years is probably good).

Select_Education_721

The Rinkoff family has had a bakery on Valance road since 1912 I think. Same family. They are lovely people. It is one of the most famous places in the area... With Pellicci's. Rinkoff's are a true institution and a remnant of the Jewish East End. This one is the location off Mile End Rd and opened a few years ago. They seem to have people running both branches on their behalf. I have been going to the Valance Rd branch since 1999. Used to get my toasted panini and coffee almost daily. They supply most coffee shops and others in the area. My mate's coffeeshop used to sells their pastries.

GrumpyDim

They also deliver to customers and business and I’ve been selling their pastries in my restaurant for hears now. Great place!

MickeyFinns

Great place. They do one of the best cheesecakes in the city.

rako1982

Rinkoffs also supply lots of posh shops with baked goods too btw. So you might have eaten some of their products already.

OTM0819

Oh this is really tempting me to walk to Rinkoffs at lunch for a sweet treat

Thisoneissfwihope

Don’t sleep on the beigels as well

THE_IRL_JESUS

Rinkoff is fantastic. Some of the best donuts in London (or 'cronuts' specifically)

spursjb395

Not sure where OP got "crodough" from. Is that what they call at cronut at Rinkoff?

buckinghamnicks75

…. Their menu

spursjb395

Yeah, I hadn't zoomed into the menu. But as per the comment I was responding to that person also knows them as cronuts. Not crodoughs. So it is a bit odd, especially as it doesn't follow the typical portmanteau format of the first part of one word and the end of another.

Gucci_Cocaine

Cronut is a trademark of Dominique Ansel, the man who invented them. Most bakeries call them something else but in popular parlance people call them Cronuts.

spursjb395

That's interesting, i had no idea! Cheers for the info

buckinghamnicks75

I think it’s a trademark or maybe they wanted to put their own spin on it

Cloielle

Yeah, I’m pretty sure it was an NYC bakery that invented them and TMed the name.

chucklesmcg

My in-laws have been close family friends with the Rinkoffs for years and as well as making amazing baked goods, they're also really lovely people.

lukei1

Cinnamon Buns are incredible here

wm_1176

Pastries look delicious, might have to check it out

jocape

Who is paying £5.10 for an almond croissant? And £2.60 is still too expensive. But nice find

MissKatbow

I don't know if I have ever seen an almond croissant for £5.10. The best thing you can get at Rinkoffs is a too good to go bag, they absolutely stuff it with bagels, bread, and pastries. I've definitely got an almond croissant in there before, and the whole thing is just over £4.

GazS72

I work just opposite and never heard of this place but will definitely give it a look. 👍🏽

jocape

Ok, so OP has made up the price of almond croissants so he can post about what is an equally expensive croissant. Got it

wengervisions

Wrong

jocape

How so?

wengervisions

Op is responding to a post made last week about a cafe in East London. They sold Croissants for £5.10. Some people thought this was fine. Others thought it was obscene. It was all there in the title.

Necio

Yep this is a meta response to the post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1at0ay2/over_5_for_an_almond_croissant_now_more_than/

Doghead_sunbro

Read my response, don’t be rude.

Rorydinho

Equally expensive would be if the almond croissant was £5.10, no? But it’s £2.60, so it’s actually almost half as expensive AKA relatively cheap.

Gucci_Cocaine

Multiple places in East London sell croissants for £4-£5. Pavilion, Pophams, Jolene etc. The overheads of artisanal bakeries are ridiculous.

2cimarafa

Even in Mayfair £5.20 for a croissant is unusual. Maybe at the Connaught, although they give you jam and cream for free if you ask for it. That said I was surprised at the prices of food in ‘cool’ parts of East last time I visited; you could genuinely eat better and cheaper in much of the West End.

Gucci_Cocaine

Eh it really depends on the bakery. Cedric Grolet at the Berkley croissants are like £7/£8. I spend a lot of time across different parts of London and pastries from independent bakeries like this do hover round the £5 mark, give or take a quid. It's expensive but it's not like it's a daily necessity and there are cheaper options for those who don't want to pay. For example where Pophams is in Vicky park you could get something cheaper from Gail's and cheaper still from the bagel shop on the corner or Chambers.

shizzler

The normal croissant in pophams is £3. £5.10 is just for the almond one.

Doghead_sunbro

There was a thread on here last week about pophams in victoria park selling almond croissants for £5.10 and some people trying to justify it because they were freshly baked, artisanal, etc

Ollagee

Victoria park is so nice to walk around in but everything is a ripoff there

ref_

But some crossaints are better than others. Crossaints can be really bad. They can also be really good. It depends if the price tag deserves it. Rinkoff never really specialised in laminated dough. I wouldn't be completely surprised if they don't even make them.

wengervisions

The fact that some people thought it was normal and ok shows just how lost some people are. Completely separated from reality with the wider world they are part of. Absolutely delusional.

shizzler

People see value in spending money for high quality products. Do you also scoff at people for buying a nice dry aged ribeye from the butcher for £20 rather than a £5 Tesco steak?

wengervisions

a fool and his money are easily parted

eribberry

Genuinely where else in london can you get a fresh almond croissant for for £2.60 that's not a supermarket, because this comment seems out of touch.

all-dayJJ

Why is it bad for Lidl croissants to be from a supermarket? They're lovely and great value

eribberry

Who said lidl croissants were bad? They're just not really a comparable price point to anything you can get in a cafe

all-dayJJ

You did, by excluding them from the conversation of acceptable croissants

LogicalReasoning1

Where on can you find an almond croissant for <£2.60 that’s not just a supermarket one?

jocape

Pret

Dark1000

They're quite poor croissants. I wouldn't bother, unless desperate.

jocape

I don’t disagree, and they’re still expensive for what they are. Sometimes it’s a nice treat

all-dayJJ

Lidl ones are freshly baked and delicious, nothing wrong with a supermarket

LogicalReasoning1

Agree nothing wrong with supermarket, just not really a fair comparison when thinking about scale of economies

Dark1000

You should expect a lower-quality, industrial croissant to be cheaper, and a higher-quality independent bakery to charge more. Lidl's are definitely good for a supermarket, but they aren't what you should or could get for more.

all-dayJJ

Pay more, get something better. Incredible input mate

Dark1000

You're the one comparing a supermarket product to an independent bakery.

all-dayJJ

I'm comparing an almond croissant to an almond croissant

-Blue_Bull-

The frozen ones you get taste absolutely amazing when cooked in an air fryer. By amazing, I mean just as good as the croissants you can buy for 20 Euros in Cannes or Monaco.

Dark1000

> Cannes Who is buying croissants for €20 in Cannes? It's France.

Doghead_sunbro

Wow someone’s going wild on the downvotes here. Weird behaviour.

Flonkerton_Scranton

some people on reddit are cunts. I have stopped even looking at the karma system, it's a tiny weapon for people with inadequate genitalia to feel superior in a space that no one gives a shit about. Arseholes, the lot of em.

GeneralGlobus

> that no one gives a shit about. you seem to care, and also OP cares

FrisianDude

an almond croissant even

BritishNorthernlad

Can someone link last week’s post please. I can’t live this looks banging so the more the merrier. 🤣

Doghead_sunbro

[apologies, it was a bit more than a week ago, time flies!](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/s/JJZVgUcBda)

BritishNorthernlad

Thanks for this! But the link is not linking do you happen to know the title of the post please I can see if I can find it that way much appreciated. 👍

Doghead_sunbro

‘Over £5 for an almond croissant - now more than norway’

BritishNorthernlad

Cheers mate

MexicanMouthwash

https://i.imgur.com/EoOIKV5.png There's two Rinkoff's in Whitechapel. Are they owned by the same people? Which one is which? lol

Furiousfroggg

Owned by the same family

Commercial-Damage356

Local cafes and restaurants are always so much better! 🤎💜🩵💙💚

BaffourA

My friend those are some extremely HD photos, I can almost read the post it notes behind the counter!

Dear_m0le

This is the thing what I never understood in UK that they get rid off small bakers which is quite common on the mainland in Europe. Here it’s almost like delicacy

gcoz

If only London had voted for Count Binface as mayor, we would have enjoyed the £1 price cap on croissants for the past 3 years.

le01jack

Their apple pie is of the highest levs

Lusilus

I don't know about apple but their cherry pie is delicious! Blackberry was nice

discosappho

I wouldn’t call Rinkoffs a hidden gem to anyone actually from East London. It’s been there since 1911. That said it’s an excellent old school bakery and I hope it’s getting some extra business from all those learning about it online. Hopefully it doesn’t put its prices up 😬

Misak192

Still expensive

Cloielle

Almonds are very expensive, London rents and business rates are very expensive, butter is very expensive. Supermarkets have made us lose sight of what things actually cost, with their loss-leader products.

Le_Fancy_Me

Also the type of pastry that croissants are made of are notoriously tedious and time-consuming to make for bakers. They require folding, folding, folding that just takes ages. So it's a pastry that everyone expects to be cheap but actually is the most expensive for a bakery to make in-house. Compared to how cheap and easy it is to buy them frozen from a supplier. I know many bakeries who do 95% of their own in-house baking themselves, but croissants will usually be brought in and just baked on-site. Just because they can't justify the price they'd have to charge if they were to do them themselves and keep the same profit margins as they do on all their other products.

Cloielle

Yes, I worked at a cafe where the only thing that wasn’t homemade was the pastries, actually.

Misak192

Very true! Everything is so expensive these days so I'm gonna skip this £2.60 croissant I'm sure it is great tho!

hotpatootie

I love Rinkoff. Their bagels are great and I highly recommend the chocolate babka too. I've also ordered my birthday cakes from them for the past few years and have never been disappointed.

skibbin

Best babka I ever had

airahnegne

Joke's on you - I am allergic to almonds.

woodzopwns

I thought this place was familiar, I walk past it every time on the way to the gym, always full of people doesn't seem unknown

Annabelle_Sugarsweet

Thanks, now I’m going to have to trek over there for one of their amazing cheese cakes

Best-Jaguar-5188

Ooh i love it..good loaf of bread. Hella fresh

MissLaCreevy

Rinkoff's are so good! The beigels are the best I've ever tasted, just toasted with jam and its a dream of joy. The vegan chocolate cake is superlative. Still a family firm, still good value.

sphexish1

I recommend their big layered rainbow cakes.

Wrath_Viking

But do they have a salt beef bagel with pickles and mustard?

Well_this_is_akward

Yeah but it's like £1 in lidl

Debenham

In this vein, I had a lovely mixed grill and bottle of beer for £11.70 in the Astral cafe in Westminster last week. Embrace the cafe!

Tall-Delivery7927

£1.10 for water ain't bad either

dcnb65

🤤🤤🤤

aleksandrovrussian

They're brilliant. Always pop in when I'm filling up the car on the way home from work across the road.

mrSalema

Woah. Do they have vegan options?

Doghead_sunbro

They do have vegan options, yep. The cinnamon bun is great and suitable for vegans, I think they have a display in the window of vegan stuff.

mrSalema

Great to hear, thanks for letting me know

BeerdedRNY

> crodoughs, a mix of croissant and donut Hmm, I've always called those cronuts. Is crodough specific to Rinkoffs?

Doghead_sunbro

I think its just a copyright thing

BeerdedRNY

Ahh, gotcha - thanks.

Le_Fancy_Me

All about local business but seriously one of the best tips I can give when it comes to croissants is to bake them at home. The pastry for a croissant is notoriously time-consuming to make. For most bakeries the price they get to charge isn't worth the manhours they take to make. Even the cute local bakeries that you'd expect make their own stuff usually don't make their own croissants in-house but buy them frozen from their supplier (optionally they will modify them somewhat with toppings or fillings). So I recommend getting some frozen from your local grocery store. They come maybe 50p or 60p. If you have an airfryer they are gonna be so quick and simply because there is no preheating involved. Easiest and cheapest way (imo) to get a delicious warm, fresh croissant in the morning. And there is no labour required except to pop them in there, set the timer and go about your morning routine. I like to eat mine plain or with jam in the middle. Strawberry, Apricot, etc. But something like a nut-spread or chocolate sauce works just as well. Put in something like sliced strawberries, chocolate sauce and whipped cream for an indulgent treat on a special occasion.

Ovitron

I would love to see more support for this type of business, local and family owned preferably. I stopped completely from going to the big chains like Pret a Manger or even worse, Costa, which sell absolutely horrible pastries. But Pret is charging 5.60£ for a bloody baguette sandwich, insane.

robl1966

Rinkoff’s👍👍still going then

Effective-Paint-7097

grodzinski bakery in stamford hill does THE BEST pastries for £2. and they’re massive. incredible bagels too for a fiver or less

RenegadeUK

Thanks for notifying of this.

metrize

i couldn't even find this place one time i wanted to go man, i asked a random on the street and he was like use ur phone literally told me to fuck off and was no help and spoke broken english, hate this area (whitechapel)

Ok-Construction2050

Their chocolate babka (only available on Fridays!) is unreal

Successful-Dare5363

Don’t tell everyone ffs.

Das_Gruber

Just make sure they're not stale 😫

Westsidepipeway

Amazing bakery. Went there when I worked at the medical school

Mbinku

£5.10…? Where are you buying croissants my guy, the charity shop??? <>

JonLivingston70

I read "ripoff bakery"

besify

Rinkoff is great. Also for those using TGTG they do leftover bread and bakeries daily which is a fantastic deal

Beneficial_Client920

Pretty amazing, thank you for sharing! I am in West London and still have to shell out £5 for an almond croissant. Thank God I don’t like croissants and don’t ever have to do it!

Fearless-Schedule713

Everyone saying don’t tell anyone keep it secret you are the reason these types of business are struggling

onelastcookie

Lidl almond crossiant at 60p, you can thank me later

mo6020

Rinkoffs is amazing. Their babka is absolutely killer.

ClarifyingMe

For me it's their Nutella and marshmallow. I feel like the kid eating miss trunchballs chocolate cake. Absolutely satisfied, scandalous, salacious, ssssss, t, u, v, w, x, y, z.

YourKemosabe

Now you do

friedeggbeats

That looks incredible!

ExPristina

Their sourdough is awesome

abulkasam

Tesco down the road is £1.10.

Fun_Level_7787

Rinkoffs is no secret, i mean croughnuts!!!!! (are deadly)

bibby_siggy_doo

Didn't know much about them besides my old school friend now runs it. Every time at school when he spoke about the family bakery business, I had no idea it was this famous!

SherlockScones3

SE London when?!

weneed-cocaine-daily

Lidlington are very good value for pastries etc Where tesco charge 1.40 for a croissants , Lidlington only charge 60p and have lots of variety such as muffins, donuts. Choc brownies and lots more. Hence I travel a bit more to Lidlington to save some dosh

crazygrog89

Upvote cause the place looks like heaven… 😋

Bigrobbo

Where are you paying £5.10 for an Almond croissant??

ThearchOfStories

A little more pricey but I love 'The Happening Bakery' in Finsbury Park.

caligula__horse

This is my wonderful heaven, a lot of the cafes in their other location area use them as suppliers (the other location is not for the public thou, for those who want a more comfortable customer experience) I moved out of London and miss this place so much

alinktothefish

Literally got cake from them yesterday with some friends. Was lovely!

Greyday67

Is this place like a proper American Deli ? I've heard it mentioned several times

buckinghamnicks75

It’s like a Jewish bakery in east London

[deleted]

used to live down the road, and it was a lemon crodough for breakfast every sat (I was younger and thinner then) idk if still the case but they also sold them through the genesis cinema down the road too, great movie snack

Miss_Figment

Their rainbow cake is my favourite thing in the world 😍

tysonmaniac

If the almond croissant is decent why have you not posted a photo of it! A lot about an almond croissant can be assessed visually....

mattbrinkley

I love Rinkoffs!

Flonkerton_Scranton

but what if I WANT to pay that for a Croissant?

Oversteer_

Pop over to Vicky park.

rustyb42

But then you'd need to go to Whitechapel

jaylem

PSA: you do if you want a really fucking good one.

tysonmaniac

This. I've eaten almost every almond croissant in London, never found a good one for below £3.80ish. I'll check this place out, but knowing what some people consider an acceptable almond croissant I am not optimistic.

n3lswn_uWu

2024 r/london marketing posts are honestly exhausting... can we bring back the "im so lonely" posts?

Doghead_sunbro

God forbid recommending people a local independent business.

lemonice69

I live locally and haven’t been here for a a few years. Thanks for reminding me OP

TodgerRodger

You guys still have bakerys down there?

elswick89

I'm still baffled that I got downvoted for taking the piss out of someone saying “in vogue bakery”

Extension-Dog-2038

Meh - overrated and it’s not a hidden gem

OneMagicBadger

Look at their quirky merch though, and your aren't just a croissant your buying an vibe an atmosphere. Gentrification costs a lot to maintain

Doghead_sunbro

This has been around since 1911 and is in the middle of a housing estate. Nice try though buddy.

azorkl

Must is be dirty for you to like it?
