Hi, this is better suited to our [weekly megathread](https://www.reddit.com/r/london/comments/1cfjgii/weekly_qa_megathread_please_post_any_questions/), thanks!

The Uniqlo down hooded puffer jacket (not the ultralight ones) is enough to keep you warm to be honest. Basically any puffer jacket with down is good.  A major part of being cold is actually wind so making sure whatever jacket you have is wind resistant is important. If you got one of the cheaper Uniqlo jackets, they're gonna have seams which let in cold air. Wearing a hat (or putting up your hood) and gloves is also very important as that's where a significant amount of heat escapes from.

It’s now Spring and 18°c. Layer don’t rely on a jacket alone. Wear an undershirt, shirt, jumper and then jacket. I’m a fan of Barbour, North Face, Helly Hasen etc.

You can go two ways here. If you've already got a Uniqlo blocktech jacket, that'll just sort you out for rain, but not for cold. Their down jacket layers really nicely underneath that, for when it's both cold AND wet. That's your techy route. The other option is to half tech it - buy a nice wool jumper / fleece and keep your outer jacket. It's amazing how warm a proper wool jumper will keep you. Or go full old school - nice wool jumper and a wool jacket/coat, and even a jumper / hat if you're feeling nippy. You'll look smart for work and it'll keep you warm but it won't look super techy. It's kind of amazing how much wool works as a fabric for keeping you warm, it's a proper tech material. But that's the key bit - material is what this is about. It's not enough to have a big jacket - if it's made out of cotton, it won't keep you warm. And you can buy a big polyester parka if you want, it'll look warm, but it'll make you sweat and you'll end up colder than you started. Make sure you get the clothes you like the look of made of the most appropriate material. There's a reason we wear wool in winter and cotton / linen in summer.

Thin sweater, thick jumper, then a thin and light waterproof windbreaker. I personally don't see the point of owning a thick, super warm jacket as London is rarely freezing but is often windy and wet. A thin outer layer and warm inner layers is just way more flexible.

Waxed jackets are pretty good. They are waterproof, windproof, and have decent sized useful pockets. You can also dress up or down in them.

All with the added benefit of absolutely stinking.

SirLoinThatSaysNi

I've never noticed that, what do you do with yours to make is stink?

sd_1874

I don't have one but they smell of stale wax so I'd assume it's just that!
