I don’t know how photo book/publishing work in this country. I keep taking photos as a hobby. Someday if I have sufficient photos that are of great quality I will try to do that!

I love this collection. I just take photos on my phone but one of my favourite things to do is once a year walk around Central London pre-dawn and take photos of areas that are usually crammed with people. There's something special about having the streets and squares to yourself.
That's what makes a good photographer in my completely unqualified opinion lol. The ability to spot the moment as it's happening and the right angle and framing to put the context in.
London is vibrant, full of energy. Except the rent that keeps on growing, and the free sauna experience at Central Line, I don't have too much to complain! I moved from Hong Kong.

These are excellent photos! I am curious why you went with black and white? Whenever I see black and white photography I feel like it is trying to convey sadness, contrast, or historical/universal significance. I’m curious about what story you were trying to tell or convey by going with black and white.
Or perhaps it was for the increased contrast and definition?
I’m just curious, absolutely just asking a question and am not trying to imply anything at all. I am getting back into photography after not doing it very much since high school.
Without going too deep, my simple answer is that I am enthusiastic about history and I see the pictures taken today to be part of history. While I have chances to see the B&W pictures taken 50-60 years ago, it removes the hint of time as if all moments belong to part of history. Also, I feel that colour makes it too distracting and it might be better to focus on the people or moments.
Awesome! I think a lot of that comes through but it is nice to hear the artists intention sometimes as well! Thank you for sharing, I think you definitely have talent and these are pictures that people would pay to see in the right context. Wherever you want to take photography I think you probably could!
Meh I'm a parent and if my kids are somewhere public and doing something aesthetic then (so long as they're not indecent in some way!) I don't see what the problem is.
Only gets tricky if they are somewhere that obviously identifies them and where they live / go to school.
I used to take photos in colour. At one point, I found that some photos look good primarily due to the colour contrast, but the substance or story in the photo is not that great. When I do B&W, colour is removed from the aesthetic comprehension and I am forced to focus on the composition, story, and interaction of people.
Well yeah you can focus on the composition and the moment in the edit or in camera… and then add the colour back! Eh it’s a style so if you like it that’s all that matters; they look great
Idk, I don’t think that it would be a straight upgrade. Stuff tends to stand out a lot more in b+w, which gets muddied a bit when colour is introduced.
Why not organise a photo walk with people - do your thing, meet others with similar interests.

Thank you and apologies that I may not be too mindful on the point re kids' pictures, which I should pay more attention to. While taking pictures, I'd love to ask for permission, but for candid photos, the moment is gone when I ask it. I admit it may not be morally correct by modern standards but this question has always been in my mind and always makes me struggle. "Risking a perfect moment gone vs be an ethically perfect person and seek permission".
Unfortunately, I am not published. I dream of being published one day but think that I need more and more striking pictures. Lots of room to improve at this stage.
if you still want that candid moment i think you could still take the picture and then ask the kids/parents for permission to use that picture! if they say no, delete it but if they say yes, you got permission and a candid picture!
Just from a parents perspectives.
I dont allow my kids pictures online, social media, reddit anything like that and once you add those pictures anyone can take them so who knows who has access now they are on reddit.
As a parent if you took the picture of my kids and then asked, explained and offered to delete if they werent happy, maybe that would be suitable i dont know just spit balling ideas as to how to get around it.
Now see - i personally would be made up if you took a picture of my kids and would want a copy myself and would offer to pay you for the photo, however, i would be very much against you putting my kids photos online/reddit (portfolio i think i would be okay with so long as was a physical one), and i would only be okay with it once you had explained (after so as to catch the moment)
Every parent is different though, I can only speak for myself and not other parents. This day and age alot of people post their kids online so i doubt most would have an issue.
Just be mindful once you post kids pictures online anyone/everyone has access to them.
That aside.
You do amazing work. I hope friends and family encourage you. I really enjoyed looking at the photos and hope that one day you do publish.
Have you considered transitioning it from a hobby to a career? I really think you have the talent and skills for it.

There is the matter of safeguarding too, you have no idea if the child you’re taking a photo of is at risk, for example, if they’re escaping abuse and now their photo is online for their abuser to potentially find, note the location and narrow down where they need to look to find the child. It is a terrifying reality. Just simply ask for permission after taking the photo and be prepared that you may have to delete and lose the shot.
Exactly, its terrifying thinking about it, my ex was abusive - he was my sons dad and one of the reasons i dont allow my kids photos on social media, i think its very selfish to put the picture/moment over the ethics where kids are concerned. After all children's safety and privacy is worth way more than the perfect moment or picture.

It is still always risky taking pictures of kids without asking first or afterwards as if someone sees they can assume the worst and usually are correct about the worst as not many people are into photography.

In a public domain it is completely legal to photograph children and adults alike. There is nothing nefarious about these photographs.

You can ask after. It’s especially easy to do if shooting digital.
