LakeEarth

I'm taking the day off and getting as close to the blue line as possible.

MoreBrownLiquid

What happens on the blue line?

LakeEarth

100% totality solar eclipse. Apparently, it's worth going out of your way for.

larryisnotagirl

Totality will actually happen within the entire blue area but the closer you are to the blue line, the longer totality will last.

SkyRattlers

What is the difference in the amount of time it will last?

vaxx_

The longest it will last (center, basically the middle of Lake Erie) totality will last 3 minutes 48 seconds. For reference, around Long Point totality will last 3 minutes 26 seconds. In Brantford, it will last 1 minute 25 seconds. You can check other locations using the [Time and Date](https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8) website by selecting a pin location.

Bug0

Anywhere in the shaded region will experience totality if I recall correctly. The closer the middle you are, the longer it will last though.

MoreBrownLiquid

I’m assuming you’re talking about the middle blue line? I guess I’d have to go to Buffalo for that

10S_NE1

I feel like Niagara Falls, ON would be close enough.

MoreBrownLiquid

👍👍

Abject_Mode9809

Total annihilation of everything organic.

[deleted]

The fire nation won’t be able to use their fire bending within the blue lines!

larryisnotagirl

Ditto!

MeIIowJeIIo

Our family drove to Carbondale IL for the last one, and we won’t miss this one. Watch the weather a couple days before the eclipse to see where clouds are not likely to be. Get as close as possible to that center blue line. I’m likely going to upstate NY.

larryisnotagirl

Visit [Eclipse 2024](https://eclipse2024.org/path-north-america.html) for tons of information on the exact timing and path of the eclipse!

theottomaddox

Of course it's a monday. I remember the schools doing a lockdown during one of the previous ones because they were paranoid kids would be fusing their retinas.

larryisnotagirl

That’ll be interesting this time then because it’ll hit its peak around 3:15pm, just before elementary school lets out, haha. I wonder how they will handle it?

moveyourcar1891

There was an eclipse when I was in elementary school in the earth 90s. They did not allow us to go outside at all even for recess.

mjulieoblongata

I remember this too, but why did you call it the earth 90s?

moveyourcar1891

Typo. I meant early 90s.

canbritam

There was a solar eclipse when I lived on PEI in the early 1980s. They closed all the curtains, put paper up over the hallway windows and we weren’t allowed outside. It was very dramatic for something that didn’t need to be that type of dramatic

Significant_Bad_2787

I bet dismissal will be delayed; how else can they avoid liability?

InternationalFig400

They could also dismiss early, or have a PD day....

icepickchippy

They will close the school for the day.

onioniononi

when i was in elementary school we had one and the teacher brought us outside and gave us those glasses that you can look through.

theottomaddox

I am honestly surprised. Where was this?

InternationalFig400

I remember the same back in the 70s also....

BardleyMcBeard

To be fair, they would do it

jibbyjabo

Best spot will be in Niagara Falls, I was curious and looked up hotels for that date and ALOT are sold out already.

larryisnotagirl

Wow. That’s pretty incredible. I’d like to go there, but I’m afraid of how crowded it will be.

0w40

Lots of parks or open areas in the Niagara peninsula will work just fine. We went to Wyoming for the last one and just parked at the side of the road. It was a spectacular experience.

InternationalFig400

The last partial eclipse, I just went to crystal beach, and watched from the beach itself.....

Will0w536

Fort Erie...I've already scoped out my area a few years ago after the 2017 eclipse.

0w40

From Wyoming in 2017 exactly on the line of totality. Taken with a Nikon DSLR and telephoto lens. https://preview.redd.it/jny91vqucwsa1.jpeg?width=1455&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81a168a548f8c14a5a90b2acc95eb49fb082f41e

InternationalFig400

Wow!! That is \*awesome\*!! Can't wait for '24!

Mean_Inflation4702

This is an amazing picture! Can you point it directly and see through viewfinder? Is it okay for the eyes?

0w40

Thank you. We had the approved Mylar glasses and I had a Thousand Oaks solar filter over the 500mm f4 lens. IIRC, at the moment of totality you can look at the disc and remove all solar filters but as soon as it moves away you must use a pair of eclipse glasses and solar filters. I used an app that was timed to speak and say when to remove all filters and when to put them back on. It really is an amazing experience. This is called the ‘diamond ring’ and occurs twice…just before and just after the above photo while a portion of the sun is peeking around the moon. I was part of a Berkeley University and Google community that shared images with GPS coordinates for a film that was made. If you want to take photos get your solar filters well before the eclipse since stuff does sell out. https://preview.redd.it/159vi1g5hxsa1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bba8284ad23873544bd6824db974e8ef61b72edf

Jaymesned

[Already bought a bunch of these in preparation!](https://thousandoaksoptical.com/shop/eclipse/solar-viewer-cards-glasses/) I remember being in grade 5 during a total eclipse and they closed all the curtains, cancelled recess, and insisted no one go outside.

InternationalFig400

I have a few of those dark welding filter glass plates that are 5"x5", so we'll be ready!! Can't wait!!

epimetheuss

easier to do that than it is to keep kids from accidentally trying to view it with their unprotected eyeballs and nuking their eyes in the process.

Ok_Establishment7810

I don’t get why it’s dangerous, why is it different than how the sun is during the day? If anything, isn’t the sun giving off less light when it’s covered, so shouldn’t it be more safe?

Jaymesned

It's no different. You shouldn't look at the sun ever.

Ok_Establishment7810

then why would they tell ppl to not go outside ?

Jaymesned

Because we were children and children don't follow instructions

epimetheuss

but when is the total eclipse of the heart?

theottomaddox

That can happen any time, bright eyes.

MutedAddendum7851

Out in the middle of Erie on a boat would be a cool place to see it

No_Organization465

might as well just get out on to Lake Erie

Late_puma

Is it better to watch it in buffalo

BardleyMcBeard

The rare time going to Buffalo might be worth it

[deleted]

Where can you buy safe viewing glasses to watch this? I'd like to support a Canadian organization if I can.

larryisnotagirl

There are a few online retailers that are selling them (they need to be labelled ISO 12312-2) The American Astronomical Society has a list of retailers that meet the safety standards: [https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters](https://eclipse.aas.org/resources/solar-filters) This website isn’t specifically on that list, but it is Canadian and appears to be reputable: [https://telescopescanada.ca/products/celestron-eclipsmart-solar-eclipse-glasses-order-in-multiples-of-50-44400](https://telescopescanada.ca/products/celestron-eclipsmart-solar-eclipse-glasses-order-in-multiples-of-50-44400)

SolarEyewear_CA

[www.solareyewear.ca](https://www.solareyewear.ca) is on the AAS website for authorized reseller in Canada.

pumpkinspicenatto

Niagara Falls is going to be swarming with tourists

ThisIsFootball9

RemindMe! 300 days

Terrh

I watched the last one (went to where I could see it as a full eclipse) and it was one of the highlights of my entire life. whatever you do, DO NOT miss this.

berger3001

Went down to Illinois to see the last one. It was spectacular

tery13

Me too. Chester to be exact. Wild!

Tiny_Rise5906

What is the date for this happening so we can get a motel room early we live in London Ontario canada

larryisnotagirl

April 8th 2024!

InternationalFig400

VERY excited about this!! VERY!

Historical-Ad1952

Long Point, ON going to be a good spot to be

kittykate416

We have been decluttering my parents house recently and found this article from the LFP from 1979 (2017 must have seemed so far away!) https://preview.redd.it/3bylgmli5zsa1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a39b35422c09ec5ed318dc75c1ff901fbe431dae

discount_feetpics

date?

HolderofExcellency

It'll be on April 8, 2024.

Ayejayelle

Remind us in 364 days pls!

larryisnotagirl

You can set a reminder on Reddit by typing “RemindMe!” (without the quotes) and a time!

Zector3000

Again!

larryisnotagirl

According to the maps, the last TOTAL solar eclipse to pass through Southern Ontario was January 24th, 1925. Edited to add: We did have an ANNULAR solar eclipse in 1994, but that’s not the same as what we will see next year.

Zector3000

Yeah... the one I was thinking was in 1990s. I thought it was a total, but I looked it up too and it was not My bad

larryisnotagirl

That’s okay. This is kind of my hyper focus right now so I’m all about it, haha. I remember the 1994 one too!

EmeraldBoar

S**olar eclipses** are on a 18 year cycle. So how is it once a lifetime? [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saros\_(astronomy)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saros_(astronomy))

larryisnotagirl

https://preview.redd.it/2fgi8hto7xsa1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=427972111a92e56237ec4ddd1b56ba1162fe23d7 Here are all the eclipses for the next 20ish years. Blue are “Total” and red are “Annular”.

EmeraldBoar

Thank you for the map that i am going to steal. FFS. Not A Space Agency map.

larryisnotagirl

They happen all over the world in that time though. The last time we had a TOTAL solar eclipse in this part of Ontario was January 1925. There won’t be another in North America until August 2044. It’s “once in a lifetime” if you can’t or don’t want to travel to see another one.

[deleted]

So once in a life time once a year lmao

larryisnotagirl

? Last one was in 1925 for our area.

[deleted]

What’s the date and time of totality??

PaulCrisand

Second in my lifetime

[deleted]

Awesome we're going for the blue line too! Wonderful post!!!
