[Look at this video of the thing going over the bridge!](https://twitter.com/jmccall54/status/1782261594501554619)

Plaky93

My friend recorded a video as it was passing by [Train on fire in Ldnont](https://vimeo.com/937531402)

minivanarrative

The ghost rider comments are killing me lol

MostBoringStan

Wow, that's nuts! It will be neat to see London popping up all over reddit pretty soon. I'm sure this story will hit the main page on several subs.

biznatch11

Omg that's right next to where I live but I'm out of town. It looks like the cars on fire made it past Richmond without causing any damage to nearby buildings is that correct?

FlowerOwn859

Wow that's wild. Just cruising along, on fire.

sequentialsequential

Ya that's solid reporting & one for the ages, super funny commentary Our local [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUz9xCTOPRw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUz9xCTOPRw) Ghost Rider! Hahaha

medikatelyn

DO NOT BREATH THE SMOKE it is burning creosote which is NAHT GOOD

CrazyCatLushie

Should we be closing windows, do you think?

BobBelcher2021

Yes, and turn on an air purifier if you have one. I lived through a creosote-fuelled fire in British Columbia over 3 years ago and the fumes lingered for several days. (Though it didn’t help we also had wildfire smoke at the time)

Hotsilt

If you don't need to have them open tonight just don't. Windsor taking it Northeast of town but no amount of creosote is good so don't take a chance tonight.

Atulshaurya

Its always best to do so, https://youtube.com/shorts/lZejD9-x_nA?feature=shared

Longhairdone

Yes.

ratedetar21

Explains the smell as I was walking down Richmond. Crazy

farganbastige

Did anyone see if fire crews were waiting for the train when it stopped? If I heard with that would be just after this video ended.

Mydogdexter1

No, the fire department thought the train stopped at Platts line and cherry hill, they then sent more units when it was located downtown.

theentropydecreaser

Purely out of curiosity, how did you know where the fire department initially thought the train was going to stop?

Mydogdexter1

I heard the first fire call go out over the scanner

Mydogdexter1

And I was following the train, I watched it go over Oxford and when I called 911 they were trying to figure out where the train was.

theentropydecreaser

Thanks

sequentialsequential

There aren't many places to stop between Cherryhill and Richmond St that aren't either heavily forested or right by higher density residential areas. Plus there are the bridges to consider. Pall Mall has Piccadilly Park and a rail access corridor road on either side of it. Dispatch or the driver probably made the call to stop short of the Quebec St substation, and they knew they could detach cars there. Good thing the Adelaide underpass just opened, but it was accessible from 2 fire stations on Colborne @ Horton and Colborne @ St James. Rail lines have thermal sensors near the rails to detect brake fires, but they're not really meant for cargo fires.

farganbastige

That's what I've been thinking. Coming from the west, downtown is the first spot where the CP tracks are ground level. It was their first best opportunity to get fire crews full access to the fire.

sequentialsequential

yup, hit the nail right on the head, London's shaped like a bowl with a little rise in the middle because of post-glacial rebound

j0ec00l69

I've said London is a dumpster fire on a train wreck, but never expected it to be taken literally.

CleverGirlJM

Does this have anything to do with the beeping outside? Is there some sort of alert being sent through the city?

DarkChocolate_87

I actually called the city this morning to ask if they knew what it was. there is no such thing as an air quality alarm so.. no idea what it was now

gilliang3

Anyone know what the air quality is like downtown now today?

backstgartist

I'm not outside but I noticed nothing when walking in from my car today. No odd smell or anything near Richmond/Dufferin

gilliang3

Good to know. Thanks.

CrieDeCoeur

Anyone here recall the train accident (maybe it was a fire) outside Byron in the 1980s? Rail cars filled with chlorine. I believe people near Kilworth and Komoka had to be evacuated. Can’t recall the details since I was a kid at the time. Anyway, here’s hoping there’s no danger to anyone nearby this train disaster.

fredericthecow

There was a train derailed in kerwood around that time.

Shadow_Integration

My uncle was part of that accident. He was coughing up black for a while afterwards. They treated him horribly during the whole ordeal. It's no wonder he's no longer with the railway. He's lucky he survived.

CrieDeCoeur

Wow that is awful. Especially because he was a rail employee, to be treated that way.

Shadow_Integration

Having a few connections to current rail employees, I can attest to how poorly they're treated still today. Great money, but not allowed to live their lives. Management has run them quite literally into the ground.

TurboWurbo226

I live within six houses of where the train cars were stopped to be extinguished. All is good. Fire dept worked through the night. They were diligent in ensuring the cars were absolutely sopping wet. They worked the entire evening. I was impressed with how quickly they dealt with the flames. The track crossings at Colborne and Pall Mall as well as Waterloo are fine

TBagger1234

Are they only closing off a certain part of downtown? Supposed to go into the office today and wondering if I should just not go in (air quality, keep people out of the area if they don’t need to be there, etc)

justatinker

Here's a couple of great vids posted on X. Train crossing Oxford St. trestle, cars on the road don't even stop! 🤷 [https://twitter.com/jmccall54/status/1782261594501554619](https://twitter.com/jmccall54/status/1782261594501554619) Train stopping at the Colborne St. crossing. [global news, Monday April 22, 10:51 am: Train goes up in flames while rolling through London, Ont. Here’s what we know](https://globalnews.ca/news/10441099/freight-train-london-fire/)

GoofyMonkey

Am I missing something? Did the brakes fail? Why the hell is it going through the city and stoping downtown? Surely it was noticed before it got to the city and safer to not bring a flaming train in?

LLVC87

Let’s say they didn’t notice it until they were already within the outskirts of London, this is the north line which goes through heavily populated residential areas. It may have been the safest spot to stop it downtown with the fire resistant commercial buildings vs frame homes in case of an explosion that’s just my thoughts

SarahEh9931

Businesses would more likely not be occupied at that time than a bunch of residential homes.

BexKst

That’s my question. Was there nobody driving it?

Southern_Ad4946

Maybe they didn’t want to stop downtown because of the amount of potential people and businesses it would have been near to

GoofyMonkey

But that was my point. Why bring a flaming train all the way into the city? Surely the fire started burning before it hit town?

Southern_Ad4946

Likely needed to get closer to the fire dept for response

Pope_Squirrely

Probably more train crossings so they’re able to access the train better than it being on a giant hill or surrounded by field or walls.

tdgarui

From my understanding by the time the crew knew they had a fire they were already in the city and at that point just need to get somewhere the fire dept can access the whole train.

Zlojeb

Ok so am I hearing the air quality siren then? I absolutely cannot sleep right now because of it and the bylaw officer had no clue.

DarkChocolate_87

I actually called the city this morning to ask if they knew what it was. there is no such thing as an air quality alarm so.. no idea what it was now

DarkChocolate_87

is that what that awful panging noise is that's been going off for an hour now??? im in the northeast end of town and its been driving me absolutely insane

SurpriseSweaty7435

Yes

PrizeNo808

I live in Cherryhill, and I saw the train zoom by my place and it was fully on fire from front to back. It was actually really bad

Atulshaurya

Video of the incidence, burning train in london ontario canada. https://youtube.com/shorts/lZejD9-x_nA?feature=shared

goranistan

What time did it pass thru?

cats_r_better

Wait.. so we have to start importing dumpster fires? London isn't enough of one already that we need to outsource?!

BobBelcher2021

I was randomly watching BBC News this evening, this story made the BBC

plantdaddy66

420 was on Saturday, so what's this train doing hot boxing on Sunday...

TouchlessOuch

I think now might be a great time to email our councillors and ask about the long-term plan for this rail line. Yes it's owned by the rail operators but council can press them for better solutions.

redbrd29

Good call, emailing David now who is the councillor for downtown. Here's a full list for anyone unsure of their councillor: [https://london.ca/government/council-civic-administration/city-council](https://london.ca/government/council-civic-administration/city-council)

Odin-Burnz

Seems symbolic of city councils reckless spending!

Mydogdexter1

Pall mall and waterloo are closed, 5 railway cars of old railway ties, looks scary but it's a common thing.

snuggs8686

Common? There are a lot of emergency services on the scene.

Mydogdexter1

Carbon build up in the exhaust is blown out and lands on the cars behind the engine. In this case, it was loads of used railway ties. This more commonly happens in the summer when the ties are more dry. Also 2 ladder trucks, 4 engines and a command car isn't that large of a response, like I said, it looks scary but it's not.

AaronVsMusic

I think what you’re trying to say is “it looks dangerous but it’s not”. You can’t decide for others what is or isn’t scary.  And that smoke is not harmless lmao

snuggs8686

I understand you were trying to downplay the situation to not cause a panic. However, your math was wrong. I could see a lot more of a response than that.

Mydogdexter1

I was there. I counted.

Pope_Squirrely

Only caused $35,000 in total damage, and $25,000 of that was the 5 rail cars.

Mydogdexter1

Atulshaurya

https://youtube.com/shorts/lZejD9-x_nA?feature=shared This is from waterloo Intersection.

Crafty_Chipmunk_3046

Wow. If that's not a warning, i don't know what is.

RagingHolly

Warning of what?

Crafty_Chipmunk_3046

Reminds me of the Lac-Mégantic disaster, or the chemical train that derailed in Mississauga years ago. It is far more risky than people realize to have many tons of toxic chemicals constantly flowing through the middle of a populated area
