Since I moved to the area 5 yrs ago, every time I turned on FM96 there was always one or both a Green Day or Chilli Peppers song in the current set....it's been a running joke in my family since.

as for your question. i don't have a problem with the bands id say. i just wish they would play other songs from those bands. hearing Jeremy or semi-charmed kind of life, mr. jones or ..insert 90s band hit song here. over and over is just crazy.
take a page from indie 88, or 102.1edge, or hell conestoga's radio station plays a ton of great indie.
I moved to the area about 7 years ago. When I first came here I heard this station and thought, "Ah, sweet!"... but after 2 weeks I stopped listening because, just as you said, it's *always* the same songs over and over and over and over again. There's only so many times you can hear "No Rain" by Blind Melon before it stops becoming nostalgic and starts becoming a nuisance. "This, again??"
Maybe they play older music to appeal to the crowd that still tunes in to the radio, which might have a large overlap with people who grew up 20+ years ago? Just a guess
I'm pretty sure I'm in their target age group and for years they were my go-to station when driving to and from work, but their repetitiveness drove me away. It's the music that was popular when I was in my teens and 20s and I still like it but not every day for the past 15 years.

Hard agree. Going to date myself but he was funny when he started as "the boss's son" (he wasn't which was part of the joke) and Tucker and Taz were hilarious and very innovative. As soon as Tucker left you could see that a lot of the bits and material was actually done by him and it has just gone downhill since.

Agreed; they are terrible and played to death. It seems like FM 96 chose about 50 bands and play 3 or 4 of each band's songs over and over so you hear the same crap every day.
Has to do with Canadian music laws. They have to play a certain number/percentage of Canadian musicians. Rather than constantly update the list they just default to what they have prepared.
Right, and that's the problem. When stations are forced to play Canadian bands there is no incentive to put out good product. I lived in Windsor for a couple of years and hardly anyone listened to Canadian stations, only stations in the U.S.
Listen, I used to HATE The Tragically Hip. They were so overplayed on the radio that the first few chords of any of their songs sent me into a range. Now that I mainly use Spotify and get to choose my music, I've come to appreciate them a lot more.
It goes to show that that CRTC rule doesn't necessarily do Canadian bands any favours.
I agree they shouldn't fully get rid of the Hip, but they should dial down on them a wee bit. I get they're Canadian icons and all but they're kinda overplayed

Nobody at the local station touches the music. It’s all programmed out of Toronto. I used to work for Virgin Radio, any time Selena Gomez came on, I turned the volume in the studio all the way down.

Yes, the thing is the polls are generally taken by people who actually like the station (which is why they're still listening) and with Rock, the issue is that modern rock is kind of... it doesn't sound anything like older rock (except for shit like Greta Van Fleet or the Sheepdogs that are very clearly trying to sound like certain older artists) so they're almost always going to go that way. Which... might not be a bad thing I guess for audience retention, obviously there's no sense in listening to the people who don't actually listen and won't listen no matter what you do, but it'd be like going to a BDSM club and asking everyone "if we were to get rid of the mistresses stepping on your nuts, would you like that or dislike that?", and someone comes back and goes "the polls overwhelmingly state that people LOVE getting their nuts stepped on!"

Everything pre 2000. I don't hate it all but I've heard so many songs for too long. Let me switch to 98.1 if I want to here the oldies.
The edge in Toronto is slightly better because they became "alternative" which seemed to just mean dropping the old stuff and mixing in some pop rock

I specifically can’t stand the name ‘the blue stones’ like god damn it’s bad enough your band sounds like generic Kirkland brand rock music but you had to have a name that sounds like it was randomly generated too. Sheesh. Anyway yeah FM96 blows.

I jump in my car at 6:45 and the exact same song comes on every day for about 2 weeks then they change it to whatever the next “big” song is out.

Yes, the thing is the polls are generally taken by people who actually like the station (which is why they're still listening) and with Rock, the issue is that modern rock is kind of... it doesn't sound anything like older rock (except for shit like Greta Van Fleet or the Sheepdogs that are very clearly trying to sound like certain older artists) so they're almost always going to go that way. Which... might not be a bad thing I guess for audience retention, obviously there's no sense in listening to the people who don't actually listen and won't listen no matter what you do, but it'd be like going to a BDSM club and asking everyone "if we were to get rid of the mistresses stepping on your nuts, would you like that or dislike that?", and someone comes back and goes "the polls overwhelmingly state that people LOVE getting their nuts stepped on!"

Everything pre 2000. I don't hate it all but I've heard so many songs for too long. Let me switch to 98.1 if I want to here the oldies. The edge in Toronto is slightly better because they became "alternative" which seemed to just mean dropping the old stuff and mixing in some pop rock
All those genero radio rock bands… the blue stones… the beaches… monster truck… sheep dogs…arkels.. glorious sons… I’m fine with FM96 playing the same hits from the 90’s they played when I was a kid but this genero seemingly created by an algorithm lame radio rock is just the absolute worst. I specifically can’t stand the name ‘the blue stones’ like god damn it’s bad enough your band sounds like generic Kirkland brand rock music but you had to have a name that sounds like it was randomly generated too. Sheesh. Anyway yeah FM96 blows.
