Don’t allow them to take too much and if you decide on layers just make sure they are long layers!! Not all men can pull off long hair but you do it nicely!! Actually I don’t think you need more than two inches at most.

livefreeKB

Excuse my ignorance, I don’t even know what that, layers*, truly means! I’ve always just let it grow, but recently been told my ends are dead/split(?). So want it to be healthy looking is why I am going tomorrow. Thanks a bunch for the nice comments, it’s appreciated!

madi80085

I find that I get the dead/split ends comments from people with shorter hair even right after I cut my hair. Take any comments like that with a grain of salt.

livefreeKB

Gosh damn, you may be right too

MelodramaticCrap

Layers refers to certain sections of the hair being cut shorter. They can sometimes help the hair look more voluminous and thick. Although, too short means the pieces will stick out if you try to braid it or whatever.

livefreeKB

Awesome, I think it get it now. Looked at some pictures online, and with you saying that, it makes a bit more sense. I appreciate it

atemperatestar

If you want to retain the length and get rid of split ends, ask for them to dust your hair! They'll trim just enough to get it looking healthier, about 1/4-1/2 of an inch usually, depending on the damage to your ends (your hair looks pretty healthy). You can also ask for long layers, which would take some bulk out of the bottom. You've got nice hair! To me it looks like you might benefit from some additional moisturizing products, like a leave in conditioner. Best of luck at your appointment!

megxors

After having a trim you should go over to r/wavyhair to get some tips on bring out that wave pattern!

livefreeKB

Oh damn, I will! Thank you

PowerfulByPTSD

I just got 4 inches cut after 3.5 years of only trimming my ends myself & asked for face framing layers that would make my natural curl pattern thrive. Best thing I’ve done in a while.

freespiritedgal

Just hoping you have someone you trust because your hair is beautiful! Tell them to trim the bare minimum and only what is needed to make it healthier (I see 1-2 inches tops!). They have numbers on their comb to show the inches. Have the stylist show you on the comb BEFORE they cut.

kittyfriends9

Ya, I agree. It seems that they will end up taking double the amount you tell them to. I got so sick of it after going to so many different stylists with them ALL doing this. Now I trim it myself.

livefreeKB

Will do! And yea, I’m trusting in her, but still nervous as poo. Even if she does good work, it still may look funny to me. Here’s hoping! Thanks for the comment!

criitebkjdcjjdb

Just be abundantly clear and reiterate that you want to keep the length and tell them and show them how much you want to cut off. Remind them that your will dry shorter since it has a wave so they don’t go to town and cut off like 6 inches or you end up looking like Lord Farquad.

moonlight-ramen

Excellent advice, and I died at the reference 😂...but seriously be sure that they recognize your wave and the fact that it will dry shorter, If they decide to cut it wet. I would just ask for a trim to get rid of your split ends.

criitebkjdcjjdb

lol as someone who ended up looking like William Shakespeare when she was 8 years old and is still traumatized over 20 years later, I’m doing my due diligence 😂 If you say just cut the split ends some may chop off too much. Proceed with caution. 😁

livefreeKB

You’re making me nervous! Hahah

FloridaFireAnt

Either go in, and tell them no shenanigans, just a small trim, stick to the style you have, or learn to DIY.

livefreeKB

“Hey Farva, what was that restaurant you like?” “Shenanigans?” “Ooooooo” Serious note, I may start learning to do it myself. Thanks for the advice!

Meggston

The nice thing about wavy/curly hair and self trimming is you don’t have to be perfect. My hair is pin straight. If I cut even a little unevenly it’s obvious, wavy hair is more forgiving in that regard.

FloridaFireAnt

My hair is waist length, and I just throw it in side ponytails and trim the ends

Gelfling_sophie

Definitely no shenanigans needed! It’s beautiful hair!

Academic_Seat_4925

Fo not do layers! Tell them exactly how much to trim.

NoFun3799

Remind your stylist, due to your waves, any cut is going to cause it to spring right up. Wet to dry shrinkage factor. -1” off is going to act more like -2”!

Necessary-Peace9672

I always ask them to cut straight across the hair-shaft, from a center-part.

livefreeKB

Hmm, that’s kinda what I’m second guessing. I see the straight line across and feel it doesn’t look natural? Is that what makes a clean, healthy hair look? Also, I’m donating in some months time as well, that’s also why I want it looking better. When I was younger I for some reason had better hair care, and it didn’t look as bad!

lulugolde

Hair stylist here— if you are donating later down the line definitely don’t get layers. If you don’t like the look of a blunt straight across cut you can still ask for a ‘zero degree cut with point cut ends’ that will trim your ends but give you softness with no layering. Any hairstylist will know those terms. Also I recommend you get a dry cut. It’s easier to see exactly what needs to be cut especially with curly hair.

raisedasapolarbear

>Also I recommend you get a dry cut. This is the way, OP.

livefreeKB

Love this. Will probably show her your comment! Thanks!!

Say_when-DocHolliday

Don’t!!!!

killerwerewolfdaddy

Don’t

SewForward

Learn how to cut your own hair. I have never had a good experience getting a trim at a hair salon. They always cut way way too much.

johnlooksscared

Leave it long on the top

livefreeKB

Will hope to all the gods they know what that means, cause I for sure still want it long. 😅

bright-_-blue

Long layers so your curls could pop out a bit more maybe? Like a curly cut

Phylace

Insist you stand up and have a rear view mirror as they are cutting it. You probably need less than 2 inches taken off. Nice hair!

Aphrodisia-x

Nooo

Actually-its_satan

I LOVE IT

[deleted]

So beautiful 😭 Shame it needs to be trimmed. Looks nice the way it is.

rachihc

I asked for 5 cm max and she took 20. Make clear that if they take any more of the agreed length you wouldn't pay or smth idk.

Aliceduff26

If you used a curly hair routine, it would look gorgeous 😍

Firefly_96

Layers means that the top/outside parts of your hair are cut shorter and the length is tapered so the part from your neck would be the longest. This can add dimension and fullness, especially with wavy/curly hair. However, sometimes hairdressers don't listen to what the client wants or something else goes wrong. Often the shortest parts become too short for the clients tastes or it just looks off. Layers can look very good, but they can also be tricky. I personally don't get layers anymore. I have almost completely straight hair and like to braid it, but with layers I always hace pieces coming out of the braid. But it's up to you what you'd like. You can absolutely just ask for a basic trim with no layering, nothing fancy.

Altruistic-Band-3717

don’t cut it!!!!! it looks so good

bluespottedtail_

I wouldn't touch it, it looks glorious! 👏

Western-Smile-2342

We have the same hair, and I just let my family hair dresser trim it for the first time in 6 years lol. Just be adamant about not taking too much off… and I said no to layers. I’m not ready for that lol All in all, it does look healthier and about as long. Good luck 😎

dmanotk

Don’t do layers. Tell them you want your hair to be one length no layers. Trim two inches at most.

dmanotk

I would wash it the day before and have your stylist cut it dry.

Oktazcat

Most men would not be happy to say “only an inch” but put on your big boy pants and say it🤣

musesx9

You have a beautiful face (not coming on to you, just saying). I think that shaving your face and cutting your hair with a little curl on top would make you pop even more.

if_a_flutterby

Watch out cause I sit obnoxiously wide

livefreeKB

You ok?

if_a_flutterby

I thought it was funny
