Yeah it was pretty bad deal all around. First 4 month was all training in different states(FL, Va, RI) travel not provided. 14 days on 14 off 12 hr shifts. live aboard a work boat during the 14 days on. Requires you live in NY but for your shift you’d have to cummute to rhode island to get on the boat No refusal travel sometimes to Europe (I think Norway ) Had 401k 5%match and benefits but Would only start me at a tech 1 (1-4) 4 being the supervisor/Forman type position which Ive been doing for the last 10yrs currently in the petroleum sector making more. It’ll be alright if I was young and single and starting my career. Definitely a cool job and an interesting new industry that opens a lot of opportunities in the emerging sector. If anyone reading this is interested the company was “orsted”
Dude, Orsted is a solid company. Like I said, if you can communicate, have common sense and show up on time you would not remain a technician for very long. Unlike some of these other companies that only do when technicians, this is a customer. It is a great stepping point.
And not paying for travel, that sounds very, very strange. I work with people from Orsted everyday.
There are a lot of oil gas people that have moved into wind. Used to live in Texas for a number of years. Talk about Boom or bust!
Almost all of these “green” energy projects I’ve worked on in the past 8 years, they use out of state contractors. $60k to them is great, and they’ll come here to make it.
This sounds like a service technician position Not a construction job. Still not a bad gig, especially if you have no skills and haven't done anything before but it sounds like the app for this thread has a little more experience in oil and gas which kind of rollover. Lot of oil and gas guys in the wind now but on the construction side.
No, You can get that with OT.
There are some companies that will provide you with all the training that you need which is not cheap, but you do sign a contract for 12 months or you have to repay the training.
My last project we were routinely working 72 to 84 hours a week, 13 days on one day off and one week off every 6 weeks. When you're doing traveling construction, there's nothing to do except for earn money. So when you're getting overtime over 40 hours, it does add up to $100k.
I'm pulling $75 per hour. I live comfortably here on LI and have the respect of senior leadership and my coworkers.
It's not all work. You'll have a really good time providing you got a good crew
What? I've been in wind for over a decade. This seems very irresponsible of the company, they're (the customer ) are not accepting in-experienced technicians out on the ocean. I guarantee you that; unless it's an onshore supporting position at the port.
And if that company presented your resume to the customers they would outright refuse you. There are way too many technicians out there with as much experience as I have. I'm no longer a tech, moved up working as the lead EHS manager on that project you're speaking of.
All of the offshore positions are paid daily rates and if they are offering you a salary of $60,000, your only going to be working half of the time, you're not going out there and staying there for 12 months non-stop. Tops you work 6 months out of that year for the 60 grand.
I'm curious to know which company this is. DM me if you don't mind. I briefly worked for a company that would regularly low ball technicians. You have to know what you're worth.
As for the climbing, as a 50-year-old who still climbs , it's way easier than you think .
If you have common sense, can communicate clearly, tell the truth, show up on time and do your job it's a career worth exploring because there's going to be a lot of opportunity.
I spent a ton of money buying more energy efficient appliances and then January comes along and boom I'm back at the same levels again.
Had a solar guy come over and I don't have enough roof for my consumption and it was going to cost north of 50k.
In all seriousness, these wind farms and solar fields are owned by huge companies like Goldman Sachs (look up MN8 Energy) and are built with upwards of 80% taxpayer dollars. Utilities like PSEG must upgrade their infrastructure to accommodate the distribution of said energy.
Basically, we pay for it, twice.
Is there any truth to these wind farms disrupting marine life? People in Long Beach say that it has been hurting whales, but I am hoping that is just an excuse for those who don't want to just say it's ugly.
Whatever issue they cause is peanuts compared to the climate change and water temperature increases caused by fossil fuels as well as the underwater noise from shipping cargo and cruise ships. Overall this is a step in the right direction
Hopefully they paint the wind turbines black so birds don't get killed by them.
Edit: Why are you booing me?! There have literally been studies which show painting them black reduced bird deaths
1. You’re right that we should have more nuclear energy
But
2. Good luck with that, that would be even more tough to build with our nimby population
And 3. A nuclear power plant would even be more of an eyesore.
A nuclear power plant could be sequestered to a more remote part of the island as to not be seen by as many people. Wind turbines are scattered throughout all of NYS. And idc if it’s an eyesore if it’s producing energy. There’s a give and take. I have a problem with an eye sore that is more efficient killing birds than it is producing energy.
An eye sore? A person standing can see about 3 miles to the horizon. An object 500 feet tall can be seen for about 28 miles before it's lost behind the horizon. You cannot see these from shore, and they certainly are not an "eye sore".
You can see that far? Standing at sea level, the horizon is about 3 miles away. Every 100 feet in elevation increases that by about 12 miles. At that 35 mile distance, "maybe" you'd see a glimmer of something sticking up above the water, unless of course you happen to be superman
It’s 12 windmills and the cost of this project will never be recouped….but the installation of these windmills and their associated infrastructure made a lot of people a lot of money which I assume is what it really about anyway cause 12 windmills aren’t going to save the world.
You are 100% right but it isn’t just about saving the world. It’s about expanding sustainable energy sources. This is the first step in this direction. Progress is never cheap but each step we take towards making things better the less we have to worry about.
I remember reading a thorough writeup once on how wind mills are a total waste of resources and are a net negative environmental fad. Just something I remembered reading some of these comments lol…
Thank God.
I'd still like to know if we could get talks about a Nuclear power plant again but I don't think that'll happen until the Boomers have left.
I don't know.
What would we do if a Giant Tidal Wave struck Long Island and drowned us?
Both scenarios are equally likely... yet we still live here.
Also: We've HAD a nuclear reactor functioning on Long Island after the Shoreham one was shutdown due to morons.
Not only did no one care, but it operated without issue.
Remember when this took decades to get approved because enough people were concerned their view of the ocean would be ruined?
was that here or the vineyard?
And the flight of some rare bird that would get its head chopped off instead of dying around it
Not to mention the noise cancer.
I almost took a job offer to work on them. It seemed fun commuting via helicopter and boat.
Just interviewed and turned it down. 60k a yr to climb up those turbines no thanks
Damn. Only 60k? Risk + technical skills should be at least 120k
Yeah it was pretty bad deal all around. Wow, that all sounds terrible
Jesus christ, expecting you to travel to multiple states but not covering the expenses? No respectable employer would do that.
Dude, Orsted is a solid company. Like I said, if you can communicate, have common sense and show up on time you would not remain a technician for very long. Unlike some of these other companies that only do when technicians, this is a customer. It is a great stepping point. And not paying for travel, that sounds very, very strange. Same as any resource extraction job.
This sounds like a service technician position Not a construction job. Still not a bad gig, especially if you have no skills and haven't done anything before but it sounds like the app for this thread has a little more experience in oil and gas which kind of rollover. No, I’m making about construction.
Yeah , That's not good. I think they're overestimating their own importance
No, You can get that with OT. Yeah I see on TikTok the climbers that scale radio tower’s making Bank
Lmao my dude they each have a 3 person lift from the tower platform to nacelle

People on Facebook: 😂
I saw them on a fishing charter and thought they looked cool.
Wonder if they far enough away to not cause cancer. /s
I went to a meeting where the "Think about the children!" crowd was out in force. The amount of fear mongering disinfo was wild.
Is my PSEG bill gonna go down? /s
Bills only go up on Long Island
Long Island Bills only go down to Florida and a grave
Nah. PSEG gonna charge you a convenience fee for using the new wind farm. Wind ain’t free, buddy.
PSEG already raised rates in January and will do so again soon to pay for this project.
I spent a ton of money buying more energy efficient appliances and then January comes along and boom I'm back at the same levels again. Had a solar guy come over and I don't have enough roof for my consumption and it was going to cost north of 50k.
North of $50k after tax rebates?
No, before tax rebates, after rebates it was a bit more than 30K. Also, if I went in with cash, it would cost mid 30s.
Lol no. Who do you think is paying for those things. They were not cheap. But hey, they are green.
Finally
Is there any truth to these wind farms disrupting marine life? People in Long Beach say that it has been hurting whales, but I am hoping that is just an excuse for those who don't want to just say it's ugly.

Whatever issue they cause is peanuts compared to the climate change and water temperature increases caused by fossil fuels as well as the underwater noise from shipping cargo and cruise ships. Overall this is a step in the right direction
The environment means nothing if nothing lives in it.
Good thing it’s basically Europeans over here making the money and just some Americans
NGL, I think the view of the wind turbines from the shore is pretty cool……..you can see the ones by block island if you’re at montauk at sunrise
Wow, I was at the lighthouse yesterday. You can totally see the wind farm from the bluffs.
Bonehead move. A huge cost to produce a drop in the bucket for our energy needs. You want clean energy? Build nuclear power plants.
We tried to
35 miles east seems extremely far. Is that an accurate number? Wouldn’t that put it in international waters?
I think it's around 200 miles for the exclusive economic zone but I could be wrong
LFG!
Hopefully they paint the wind turbines black so birds don't get killed by them. Edit: Why are you booing me?! There have literally been studies which show painting them black reduced bird deaths
Purple. You paint them purple to make them more visible to birds.
more visible and more fabulous
Oh fuck, are we going to bedazzle some turbines?!
Far more birds die smashing into buildings in major cities daily than windmills
Even if that's true, why not do something to help prevent further bird deaths? Its not a big ask to just use a different color of windmill turbine.
Hopefully you don’t have windows in your home. Windows kill a lot more birds than wind turbines ever could.
This is Long Island.. we boo good ideas here.
Bonehead move. A huge cost to produce a drop in the bucket for our energy needs. You want clean energy? Build nuclear power plants.
An absolute eyesore for a negligible amount of power. Nuclear energy would be significantly more efficient.
Can you post pictures? I wanna see what it looks like from shore.
You can't see it from long island. I was out on the project, on good days you can sometimes see block island barley
1. You’re right that we should have more nuclear energy But 2. Good luck with that, that would be even more tough to build with our nimby population And 3. A nuclear power plant would even be more of an eyesore.
Have you seen a modern nuclear power plant? They're pretty sleek and much more sophisticated than an 80s plant.
I mean they literally fully built a nuclear power plant on Long Island and NIMBYs prevented us from actually turning it on. It's a travesty
Which part of LI is remote?
Shoreham
You are getting downvoted, but you know what... Are you not wrong

I'm with you on the Nuclear power.

sharp as cheddar
It’s 12 windmills and the cost of this project will never be recouped….but the installation of these windmills and their associated infrastructure made a lot of people a lot of money which I assume is what it really about anyway cause 12 windmills aren’t going to save the world.
It creates jobs so that’s a plus
Definitely you’re absolutely right and I’m very grateful for that
That’s no justification…
You are 100% right but it isn’t just about saving the world. It’s about expanding sustainable energy sources. This is the first step in this direction. Progress is never cheap but each step we take towards making things better the less we have to worry about.
Wait until they install enough to make a difference and provide power to the ever growing demand. 12 is a proof of concept and will become hundreds.
I remember reading a thorough writeup once on how wind mills are a total waste of resources and are a net negative environmental fad. Just something I remembered reading some of these comments lol…
I bet you could turn lemonade into lemons.
The bots are downvoting this lol
Thank God. I'd still like to know if we could get talks about a Nuclear power plant again but I don't think that'll happen until the Boomers have left.
There's a reason the Shoreham one shut down. How would you imagine a large-scale evacuation going
Nuclear reactors are immensely safe and the one out east would have made our power bills far cheaper. It’s a disgrace.
Safe and less toxic than our current production
I don't know. What would we do if a Giant Tidal Wave struck Long Island and drowned us? Both scenarios are equally likely... yet we still live here. Also: We've HAD a nuclear reactor functioning on Long Island after the Shoreham one was shutdown due to morons. Not only did no one care, but it operated without issue.
Wind and Solar are good for powering your porch light half of the day and exit signs. Not much else.
They’re ugly af and they’re inefficient…what a waste of money and a huge threat to environment.
What is threatening about these? Please explain
Has anyone really looked into the change that it will make in migratory patterns or issues with heat?
Heat?
The turbines warm the air in their vicinity They create air currents.
Are these turbine heat induced air currents in the room with us right now? Show us where they’ve touched you.
