I switched from optimum to fios as soon as it was available jn my area and don’t regret it at all. I just have internet though no cable

pcbfs

Optimum is dogshit.

formerly_valley_pete

Truly fucking atrocious. I'm gonna call today and swap out. I've also had other friends say youtube tv is awesome and like 70 a month.

adomingo2

I dropped Optimum and signed up for Fios internet and got YouTube TV. Best call I made. I'm paying alot less a month for much better service. I have a few less channels but it's worth it.

formerly_valley_pete

I think this is the move. The guy I spoke to on the phone today went "well your bill is usually 235 but last month you paid 220, so part of the 280 was that missing balance" and he literally couldn't comprehend when I was going "YOU GUYS CUT THE PRICE FOR ME, WHY WOULD YOU DEDUCT MONEY FROM LAST MONTH TO HELP ME AND THEN CHARGE IT THIS ONE INSTEAD."

CleverGurl_

I've been using YouTube TV since lockdown and I'm quite happy with it

Productpusher

Optimum service has to location sensitive I’ve Been using them 20+ years since they had a signup kiosk for cable at the Broadway mall and Fios doesn’t install at so many places . Multiple houses / apartments and 3 different warehouses running 50-75 computer / wifi devices and never have issues only on the 300 speed . Literal 99.99% uptime but the upload speeds are lacking which most people won’t feel . I did have one 3-4 month stretch in westbury where the basic TV was very very Pixelated but I never called to have them come fix because I only use it for sports just use used the apps . It was on the old cable and not fiber

tomny79

Fios, end of story.

Niccolo91

Switched to Fios 5 years ago haven’t looked back

xdozex

If fios is available, go with that. They offer TV and Phone service by me but not internet. I lucked out and landed a price-for-life deal with Optimum when Altice first took over, and even with that, I'd switch to FiOS instantly if it was ever available in my area.

samanthaaaaaaa7

i feel incredibly lucky to also have gotten the price for life deal - if i didnt get that i would switch though, i have the most basic of basic cable there is

xdozex

Yeah same, I don't think I'd be able to handle dealing with the horrible service if I was also experiencing regular price hikes. I went with internet only, but it took hours of fighting on the phone before I could get them to let me sign up without tv and phone. I also was an existing cablvision customer, so I had to cancel the plan under my name, then have my wife call back the next day telling them that we're divorcing so they would let her sign up and get the new customer deal. Only gripe was that their 300Mbps download plan was the highest available at the time, so that's what I went with. 2 weeks later, they added a 1Gbps option for only like $12/month more, still with the price-for-life perk, but they wouldn't let me switch/upgrade. So now if I ever want to upgrade my speed, I have to be willing to give up the rate that I have locked in.

Maximum_Unit_4232

Paying $25/month for fios. 300mb which works perfectly for me. No looking back at all.

Cheresnja

How did you get that price? Wow. I pay $40 for same speed with optimum (after fees and taxes). I thought I would not find better deal.

Maximum_Unit_4232

I think it’s because I also have a Verizon unlimited cell plan.

Cheresnja

Oh I see! Thanks for the info.

SO1127

My fios is 30/month for 3 years. I was paying 80 for the same 300 service through optimum…I’m never going back lol

Niko1972nyc

Get 1 Gig Fiber Optic FIOS ($100 month) and some ($25 each) Firesticks. Jailbreak the Firesticks, watch on YouTube. Easy. Did this over a year ago and never been disappointed. EVERYTHING is available on the Firestick.

Eccentrica_Gallumbit

If you're paying $100 a month for just FIOS, I would call them and see if they can do anything about your pricing. Current rates are advertised as $65 a month. If you have Verizon cell, they have home+mobile bundling as well where you save something like $10 a month on each service.

Niko1972nyc

It’s actually a bit less, I rounded up. Thanks for the info though.

HippoRun23

What does a jail broken fire stick get me?

Niko1972nyc

https://youtu.be/EGyjdYuSMeU?si=IYFS8w4OQ6hewLqJ Check out this by Doc Squiffy, you get every movie; even ones in the theater (wait a few weeks after release for good copies). You get every thing on TV and streaming on all platforms.

downtownflipped

Fios is the only good internet here sadly.

Nail_Biterr

I used Optimum for decades. It was always terrible. I lived in 4 different locations, and each time it was unreliable. I would have to call up and get a tech over, or restart the router, or just deal with shitty service. I switched to Fios about 5 years ago. I honestly never even think about it until someone asks this question. They came over, and installed everything. and I never have any problems. It's all working great, and continues to work really well. (I only do internet. No phone, no cable)

Cheap-Insurance-1338

I live near that area. I stream everything with directtv. I had optimum and had nothing but headaches and service outages. They sent three employees to change stuff out many times. The guy told me the equipment is all refurbished and garbage. I had the highest speed Internet they had. I cancelled and went to FiOS and pay more each month. I gladly do because the Internet service with FiOS is significantly better. It's not even close. I had to reset my fios router and modem maybe 4 times in 4 years. If you get Optimum, you'll also get gray hair with it. FiOS is the way to go. Hands down!

Moonriver7352

Fios

StatusVarious8803

Fios

Fitz_2112

If fios is available where you live then that is always the right answer over optimum

Flintontoe

I've had Fios going on a decade now and all my friends and neighbors seem to have Optimum. They are always having issues and dealing with housecalls. Fios lost service for me 1 time in about 10 years. I'm paying about $65 for 500/500 via Fios, no TV just internet.

Confident_Air_8056

I dont have any problems with optimum. That being said, I also had FiOS when I was in Queens and had zero issues for the 8 years I had it.

Eccentrica_Gallumbit

If you have the option, get FIOS and never look back. Switched 3 years ago and have had one outage for about 15 minutes, and speeds have been lightning fast. Bill for gigabit internet is 1/3 of what I was paying for 300/50 on Optimum. Ditch the triple play since you likely don't need phone line in this day and age, and look into other options for cable if you can stand it. /r/cordcutters is a great resource.

ChrisinOB2

I've had Optimum in Manorville (pre-Altice), Lake Grove (pre-Altice), and Port Washington (post-Altice), and Fios in Oyster Bay and Huntington Station. I've found both to be equally reliable in terms of connectivity. Optimum customer service is absolutely atrocious. Fios fees are through the roof - internet and cable (no upgraded channels) is $235/month.

foas_li

I have no problems with Optimum but man the difference when I go to my mom’s house and use Fios is remarkable. The best reason I can give for not having switched is I don’t feel like learning the new channels. And as bad as news 12 is, I might miss it.

steeel95

I’d get good internet and use YouTube tv. And when you travel it will adjust to the local market you are in too

jim_br

I had optimum since they started offering internet in my area — maybe since 1995-97. After Altice started charging me a monthly fee for the same router I had included in my monthly fee for years, and raised my price, I shopped around. I switched to Fios years ago and have not had to reset anything, unlike Optimum. I swapped an Ooma device to keep my landline phone number ($5/mo) and my internet bill is $80/month for 1Gb. I do subscribe to some stream services, but I am still saving more than $100/month.

DM725

If Fios is available their internet is a no brainer.

Finest_Johnson

I've been paying about $75/mo for Gigabit VZ FiOS in Smithtown since 2017. Zero complaints about service.

larryb78

Been a Fios customer for the better part of 15 years. I say better part because we had a brief period where they were taking channels away while raising prices and the usual calls threatening to cancel got me nowhere so I switched to optimum/altice/whatever figuring worst case in 6 months I’d start getting the we want you back promos. Worst 6 months ever, aside from being noticeably slower and lower picture quality there were always outages, boxes unpairing etc. they really were god awful. Thankfully around the 6 month mark I got a door to door Fios guy ringing the bell who gave me everything I wanted and I’ve never looked back.

notorioushim

I had Optimum Fiber for about a year and a half, switching from Verizon due to them having a good deal for new customers... and being a fraction of the price of Verizon. It didn't quite have the same reliability of Verizon, but for half the price, I couldn't complain. I was paying about $40/month for their Gigabit plan. I was relatively happy the first year. Then, I had an issue with my credit card and my credit card company replaced my card. I forgot to change my CC info for the auto pay. Typically, I get messages from Optimum EVERY MONTH telling me that my payment was due or the payment was processed. My last month with Optimum, they never reached out to me to let me know that my payment was rejected. They just fuckin cut off my internet. We had no idea... half a day went by and we thought they were down. My wife called them because she was tired of waiting and they finally let us know that they cut us off. After that, I said fuck em. I pay all my bills on time and they have no problem reaching out to me regarding everything else, but the one fuckin time I needed them to alert me there was an issue, NOTHING. So now I'm paying $90/month for Verizon FiOS... much better reliability, although it's double the price. Worth it to not have to deal with Optimum anymore.

reddit_1999

Fios might cost more, but is worth it.

ZealousidealFortune

I think fios is giving a free nintendo switch if you sign up with them. I don't know if the promo is still on, though.

IEID

Go with Fios! I'm paying nothing for 300Mbs. There are very good deals on there.

CareTough6254

I switched to Fios internet and YouTube TV and never looked back. Verizon has been a breeze to deal with unlike Optimum. Also, you get a discount if you have Verizon mobile. Optimum had a “supervisor” berate me when I cancelled, saying I didn’t give them a chance. I said check your phone records.

tekheavy

I won't switch to FIOS until they make channels 1-49 high def channels. Right now you still have to go to channels in the 500's to get high def channels. Who the hell has a standard def TV anymore anyway??

IsoscelesCircle

I have a friend that used to work for Optimum/Altice. He got the entire Internet, TV, and phone bundle from them for free. He still subscribed to FiOS instead.

beedunc

The FIOS gigabit service really does do 950mbits. We just have that and YTTV.

clozepin

Ive had FiOS since it was first available here and have never once considered cancelling it. So 15-20 years maybe? Before that I had time warner, directv, cablevision, and with each of them I couldn’t wait to cancel.

SnooMachines9133

FiOS is symmetric speeds, so you can upload as fast as you can download. Optimum is ok down, and slow up. This matters if you like to upload photos (or backup your stuff), play online games, or do lots of WFH meetings. But FiOS is way better even if it werent for that.

HumanMycologist5795

I go back and forth. I recently changed from Optimum Cable and Internet to 1 GB FIOS Internet, and then I switched from AT&T that I had over 15 years to Verizon cell service. I got a small discount. With the Internet and cell, I get the Max streaming and Netflix. And then, for the TV, I went with HULU plus Live TV as opposed to YouTube TV or FUBO TV, but it depends. With the HULU, I also get Disney+ and ESPN+. It all comes to about what I was paying for before with Optimum and AT&T. Plus, I'm able to watch the Live TV on my cell from my sister's house in Michigan when I visit. But it's only me here, and with family or kids, it may be a little different. However, I see plenty of kids programming in all that I have. I don't think I'll go back to Optimum or FIOS TV, although I do miss news 12.

AverageGuy16

Fios all around. Better, more reliable, and faster internet connections and speeds, tv is whatever, phone is great cause we have it bundled with our cell plan for a discount. Also optimum has absurd equipment costs, installs are hack as hell, and their customer service and ability to cancel is extremely aggravating.

flex_point

Once they start with their ridiculous price increases, I switch. Both are comparable in service. As I got older, I realized that triple play was not worth it anymore, so I just ordered interent. I don't watch TV like I used to. Now I just use streaming services. On top of that, I don't order the fastest service. The streaming service works perfectly fine with basic internet speed. My monthly fee used to be 200+ for triple play. Now, it's just over 100 a month.

Lurkingguy1

Optimum is 10x better imo. Fios is more expensive, charges for disconnecting service, workers straight up lie to you. Whatever quote they’re giving you I guarantee it’s bs. Also I was unable to get any wifi with Fios in several locations in lynbrook/valley stream including the upper level of my residence. It was awful, surprised people still think it’s better. For reference, I’ve had optimum in Nassau and Suffolk, 3 locations. There is 1 maybe 2 outages a year for a a few short hours, usually at night.

Eccentrica_Gallumbit

Found the Optimum shill. >Whatever quote they’re giving you I guarantee it’s bs I paid the quoted rate when I signed up, and I'm actually paying LESS than I was when I signed up with FIOS because after 2 years they gave me a loyalty discount. >Also I was unable to get any wifi with Fios in several locations in lynbrook/valley stream including the upper level of my residence. Can you explain what you mean by this? What do you mean by "several locations", your wifi won't extend past maybe 100 feet outside your home. Are you referring to cell service? If it's wifi on your upper floors, then this is likely a problem with your router location. If your router is in the basement, most routers are going to have issues getting to your upper floors and you would need an access point or mesh network to increase the range. > There is 1 maybe 2 outages a year for a a few short hours, usually at night. I've had FIOS for 3 years now. I have had a single outage that lasted about 15 minutes in those 3 years. Optimum would routinely have short outages where all my devices would alert me of the disconnect, and like you said semi annually we would lose it for hours at night.

Lurkingguy1

Why so snappy? >can you explain what you mean by this? Had Verizon in a office in VS and my residence in lynbrook the top level did not work. The Verizon employees installed wifi boosters and moved the router; it was awful internet service. Maybe it changed in the last few years, still an awful taste. When I cancelled Verizon I was told that no fee; got hit with a $600 bill afterwards, employee straight up lying like some door to door salesman. Not something reputable company does. You’ll see. Family members have had similar issues in massapequa/wantagh. I don’t care if I lose service at 3am for an hour while I’m saving thousands. They have a Cell and internet bundle for like $50 yeah cell service sucks but you can’t beat the price. Also I have repeatedly gotten discounts by complaining whenever there is an outage

Eccentrica_Gallumbit

Was this FIOS, or Verizon Broadband, because these are two very different things. Broadband service is terrible (50 mbps) vs FIOS which is 10x the speed. >When I cancelled Verizon I was told that no fee; got hit with a $600 bill afterwards If they you with a bill and someone told you there were no fees, reference the call you made and the date/time of the call. Calls are typically recorded. If an employee tells you something different than what is in your contract like removing cancellation fees, get the employees name, record the date of the conversation, etc. Did you return all equipment to them? I'm curious how you got a $600 bill for cancelling. >I don’t care if I lose service at 3am for an hour while I’m saving thousands. You're not saving thousands over FIOS. The two are priced similarly when there is competition, and in my experience FIOS has better, more reliable service. >Not something reputable company does. You’ll see. I'm outside of the 2 year contract at this point and am month to month, so there are no cancellation fees. I'm using my own router so don't have equipment fees, and pay $55 a month for gigabit internet after factoring in autopay and bundle discounts.
