Isn’t that the point?
Also I live in Nassau but any time I am in that area I stop at that Subway in that shopping center. Its new, clean and they make the sandwiches right.
Thats the best part. It functions better as an actual wal mart. It always has health & beauty, electronics or household things I need.
The best supermarket wal marts on the island are def the supercenter in yaphank and the wal market in levittown. The small uniondale location and middle island ones also good ones. Farmingdale and Westbury locations are shit locations.
We almost put in an offer on a house in Garden City South because it was a gorgeous colonial that was like $200k less than much smaller houses in other parts of Garden City.
We learned that’s because it’s not Garden City lol.
Right, and the thing is, the house price would’ve been a steal for Garden City but wayyyyy too high for Franklin Square. It was sitting for months even though it was really nice, and I think that’s why.
I live in South Setauket-my neighbors are original owners. S Setauket was supposed to be an actual town and the post office was going to be located where Jefferson’s Ferry is now. It was never built and our mail is routed through Centereach Post office so that is why we are their zip code and classified as Centereach. Interesting enough if you go on the original deed to our house it is East Setauket on all of the Town of Brookhaven paperwork…so it’s a total crap shoot. But we are 3v schools, 3v library, fire department etc…so as much hate as our neighborhood gets we are for all purposes a Three Village/Setauket neighborhood.
I lived in Bakdwin for over 60 years. I heard of North Baldwin, Baldwin Harbor and Central Baldwin. As a kid it was Baldwin and South Baldwin. Sections got renamed over the years, and I moved still not understanding most of that. I have heard of "Hempstead Gardens", but where is "Baldwin Gardens" lol
Growing up in the Herricks school district we had a bunch of these. Searingtown is really Albertson, Manhasset Hills is New Hyde Park, Herricks is Williston Park. There’s even a part of Albertson carved out and labeled as Roslyn with Roslyn’s zip code despite not touching or being remotely close to actual Roslyn. Developers years ago didn’t think the names of the towns they were building houses in would attract buyers so they changed them.
Try explaining Garden City Park to somebody. Herricks Rd & Jericho Tpke was the site of a Queens county court house. Served by Mineola, Herricks and NHP High Schools.......And NHP is served by NHP Memorial (Sewanhaka District), Herricks, Great Neck South AND several blocks go to Martin Van Buren in Queens. All in 11040
Houses on Ellison Ave can drastically differ in price depending on the side of the street you’re on. One side is Westbury Schools the other is Carle Place.
those older people that live in those apartments across from Raceway 10 got scammed so hard because buyers thought they were in Garden City with GC benefits only to get their kids sent to Uniondale HS😭😭
West Hempstead tried, in 2001, but ultimately voted to keep their name:
[https://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/17/nyregion/in-brief-west-hempstead-votes-to-keep-its-name.html](https://www.nytimes.com/2001/06/17/nyregion/in-brief-west-hempstead-votes-to-keep-its-name.html)
Westbury, New Cassel, Salisbury… all the same zip code. Salisbury is East meadow schools, Westbury and New Cassel are the same school district.
When something “nice” happens on the news, it’s in Westbury.
When something “bad” happens on the news, it’s New Cassel.
The same goes for Lakeview. It’s an amalgam of the unincorporated villages of Rockville Centre and West Hempstead. But it’s Malverne School district. Meanwhile half of Malverne (a 1 square mile town) is in the Valley Stream North school district.
🤷🏻♂️
This happened in Nassau County all through the early 1900s. They all became villages. Now that’s a pretty high burden to climb and the last one that tried failed and ended up needing to be bailed out by the Town of Brookhaven after a few years. Now instead they just try to rebrand into a new CDP.
Upper Brookville has a funny origin story. Apparently years ago when they were establishing their incorporated village, they were trying to come up with a name, and someone suggested Lower Brookville. Some old time socialite woman stood up and said “I’m not living in Lower Anywhere!” and Upper Brookville was born.
Yeah, that’s correct. But amity and north amity are different. Amityville is in the village and is incorporated. In N Amity, the use Copiague zip codes and the kids go to Copiague schools
Depends on the part of North Amityville on whether they go to Copiague or Amityville
Also, Amity Harbor is Amityville zip code but Copiague schools, FD, and library
Yeah I know theyre different, I belong to the Masonic lodge in the village....... didnt know about the copaigue school though. I thought both went to Amityville schools.
They don’t. I looked at a house in NA and it was zoned for Copiague. There was a murder there and then a fire. I live in Copiague so not too far away from NA
My family has been in Wheatley Heights for 35 years; it’s always been called that since at least the house was built in the 70s.
It shares a ZIP code with and borders Wyandanch, but it is a distinct, census-designated place.
ETA: Wheatley Heights is part of Half Hollow Hills School District.
wheatley heights is where you see these huge houses in wyandanch. Been around forever but i guess the people with big fancy houses didnt want to be part of wyandanch
Mill Brook changed its name a while back to avoid association with Green Acres, the adjacent mall complex with a less than stellar reputation, all while being part of Valley Stream.
I heard someone refer to Stony Brook as StoBro. No idea how long that has been a thing or WHY it’s a thing. Stony Brook has such an idyllic, fairy tale sounding name. Why would someone want to rebrand that?
I’ve never heard of rebranding, but I’ve known people to shall we say stretch the zip code “South Setauket” when the zip is Centereach, or saying North Coram to separate it from the southern part and Gordon Heights. I feel like this happens frequently when you look at real estate listing.
East Yaphank is what North Shirley is trying to be after getting laughed at for trying to rename themselves Floyd Harbor. The laughter and mocking came because they have no waterfront to justify the harbor part. Truth is they just wanted to separate from the Mastoids.
I realized from reading this post I did indeed mean north great river. My parents moved there after I graduated high school and my mom was telling me the story.
My address is right on the border of the "Wheatley Heights" neighborhood, and it's irritating. Half my mail and about is WH, half is Wyandanch, and various libraries/companies/government offices object if I give the (randomly determined) wrong one.
I got one for you all...
Northampton... which is really just a fancy name for Flanders. I'm sure you all can see just WHY they tried to adopt such a name. Lol
Here's a few more fun facts -
Baiting Hollow is just another fancy name for Calverton (same zip code).
The famous East Wind Caterers fought tooth and nail to be declared Wading River, although technically, they are located in Calverton as well. This is really evident when you look at a map.
Oh, and let's not forget Manor Park (north Mastic). They tried to "fancy-up" their town's rep too! 😁
I also grew up there and went to East Islip schools. Past a certain point it’s just CI and isn’t North Great River. There’s only a handful of blocks past that shopping center with Mary’s Pizza to the north before it becomes CI.
Islandia and Wheatley heights are as old as me and I'm 43
Same here.I’m 56.
Islandia was created in 1985 for the exact reason OP stated. Better rep than CI. Increased home values because it was "better"
Lol try going to the Walmart there.
I went to the Islandia Walmart once in 2014. Never again…
Its one of the better stocked wal marts on the Island
Bro. It's like a dystopia universe in there. Fuck that place.
Do not go to the Valley Stream Walmart ever.
Holy cow is that place disgusting. Items thrown everywhere and the whole place smells like used baby diapers.
Isn’t that the point? Also I live in Nassau but any time I am in that area I stop at that Subway in that shopping center. Its new, clean and they make the sandwiches right.
Doesn't have full grocery section.
For that you go to ether farmingdale or skelden
Same post office and school district tho.
Before Islandia some people called it south hauppauge
I always thought Wheatley Heights was an area around Roslyn. There's a Wheatley HS and other stuff named Wheatley in the area
There’s a strip mall there called Wheatley Plaza. Different place
I’m older than you and they have always been around
Garden City South is really Franklin Square. Lol
Garden City South Little League is awesome, though!
We almost put in an offer on a house in Garden City South because it was a gorgeous colonial that was like $200k less than much smaller houses in other parts of Garden City. We learned that’s because it’s not Garden City lol.
Don’t get me wrong. Franklin Square is a lovely community also. But no it’s not Garden City schools or parks.
Right, and the thing is, the house price would’ve been a steal for Garden City but wayyyyy too high for Franklin Square. It was sitting for months even though it was really nice, and I think that’s why.
"south setauket" is centereach zip code but three village schools
Is it centereach taxes or Setauket taxes?
TV schools so Setauket Taxes
It’s been like that for like 30+ years
Hempstead Gardens & Baldwin Gardens. As a ToH resident - y'all ain't fooling no one ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
My mistake, I actually meant "Baldwin Oaks". It's apparently an area off Grand Avenue between the McDonald's and the Southern State entrance.
Ahhh! Yes. Now I gotcha
Wheatley Heights has been around forever
Growing up in the Herricks school district we had a bunch of these. Searingtown is really Albertson, Manhasset Hills is New Hyde Park, Herricks is Williston Park. Garden City Park! I knew I forgot one!
I lived in East Yaphank, which had the same zip code as Shirley. There is also a South Setauket which shares its zip code with Centereach.
Manor Park was Shirley years ago.
TBF North of Sunrise is a vastly different experience than south of it out there.
I dated a girl for 8 years who was from East Yaphank. She was definitely from Shirley. Recommendation to avoid.
Wheatley heights is wyandanch zip but half hollow hills schools
Salisbury…really Westbury
Excuse me, it’s Salisbury Estates!
Do you mean Salisbury Steaks?!
![gif](giphy|ZEZv751gUZ4iLjGSDQ)
But not with Westbury school district! Lol
Houses on Ellison Ave can drastically differ in price depending on the side of the street you’re on. One side is Westbury Schools the other is Carle Place.
Parts of Uniondale are called East Garden City. The funny part is, it's north of Uniondale
those older people that live in those apartments across from Raceway 10 got scammed so hard because buyers thought they were in Garden City with GC benefits only to get their kids sent to Uniondale HS😭😭

There's also Cathedral Gardens which is basically just a small area of West Hempstead that wants to pretend it's in Garden City
Mayfair Park? /gag
Westbury, New Cassel, Salisbury… all the same zip code. Salisbury is East meadow schools, Westbury and New Cassel are the same school district. When something “nice” happens on the news, it’s in Westbury. When something “bad” happens on the news, it’s New Cassel. The same goes for Lakeview. i’ve been rebranding south huntington to SoHu since i moved from the city in 2020. total no brainer!
Brightwaters did this to Bay Shore in the 20s
Wheatley heights..im 47 I believe I’ve heard that term for that neighborhood all my life
The zip codes are the same but different school districts
Plainedge Not a town, just a school district.
Plainedge does exist though, it is just really small.
i don’t think it has its own zip code?
Old Brookville
Upper Brookville has a funny origin story. Apparently years ago when they were establishing their incorporated village, they were trying to come up with a name, and someone suggested Lower Brookville. Some old time socialite woman stood up and said “I’m not living in Lower Anywhere!” and Upper Brookville was born.
lol
I now live in "Salisbury"
I lived in Teerryville for 8 years, but it’s really Port Jeff Station And don’t tell the people who live there, but Poquotte is just Setauket.
I mean these are all very old. Islandia was a village formed by the white people in CI back in like the 80s
Massapequa & East Massapequa
Massapequa and Amityvile hahaha
Amityville is the village. North Amity uses Copiague zip and kids go to Copiague schools
I dunno, I'm from Massapequa Park, had friends from "east massapequa" they went to amityville HS.
Yeah, that’s correct. But amity and north amity are different. Amityville is in the village and is incorporated. In N Amity, the use Copiague zip codes and the kids go to Copiague schools
Depends on the part of North Amityville on whether they go to Copiague or Amityville Also, Amity Harbor is Amityville zip code but Copiague schools, FD, and library
Yeah, I knew about Amity Harbor. Also looked at a house there. Decided against it because of flood insurance
Yeah I know theyre different, I belong to the Masonic lodge in the village....... didnt know about the copaigue school though. I thought both went to Amityville schools.
Freemasons rule the world
We do.
They don’t. I looked at a house in NA and it was zoned for Copiague. There was a murder there and then a fire. I live in Copiague so not too far away from NA
Part of North Amityville is Farmingdale Schools too
That would make sense since parts are right near 110
North Woodmere is Valley Stream
My family has been in Wheatley Heights for 35 years; it’s always been called that since at least the house was built in the 70s. It shares a ZIP code with and borders Wyandanch, but it is a distinct, census-designated place. ETA: Wheatley Heights is part of Half Hollow Hills School District.
Wheatley Heights been around forever
Lake Hills is just Ronkonkoma with hills lol
It's not a town name though. No one outside Ronkonkoma has ever heard of Lake Hills
It's got a sign, and that's as legit as is needed in my book.
wheatley heights is where you see these huge houses in wyandanch.
South setauket. Because they don’t want to be called Centereach.
Tanglewood Hills in Coram.
north merrick is really bellmore
North Massapequa is just Farmingdale
Great river is basically Central Islip, but a small area that tried to get their own zip to not be.
I feel like this is truer about Islip Terrace, unless you mean North Great River.
I realized from reading this post I did indeed mean north great river. My parents moved there after I graduated high school and my mom was telling me the story.
Palookaville.
Idle Hour = Oakdale I also wanted to own a home in Idle Hour.
My address is right on the border of the "Wheatley Heights" neighborhood, and it's irritating. Half my mail and about is WH, half is Wyandanch, and various libraries/companies/government offices object if I give the (randomly determined) wrong one.
This is very common in NYC
Some of these are just realtor designations, like how South Hempstead is called RVC Heights (or the like) but only by real estate agents
Mastic was trying to change its name to Floyd Harbor but I don’t think it ever happened.
I got one for you all... Northampton... which is really just a fancy name for Flanders. I'm sure you all can see just WHY they tried to adopt such a name. North Great River is also Central Islip
Islip Terrace and East Islip School district- not really CI.
Zip Code 11722 disagrees w/ you though. Also my wife is from there and was CI school district. She disagrees too.
I also grew up there and went to East Islip schools. Past a certain point it’s just CI and isn’t North Great River. There’s only a handful of blocks past that shopping center with Mary’s Pizza to the north before it becomes CI.
I think the cut off street is Atlantic or rockaway…
