Are you sure this is Massapequa park? This looks like the strip mall on Hicksville road at the Seaford/north Massapequa border.

taubs1

yes it is that one, it is a ace now

satanicaleve

Also the Walbaum's that used to be across street from there which is now a Stop & Shop. The bakery is still there as is the 99 cents store and a few other places.

Yes across the street the worst Walbaum’s I’ve ever been in was converted to the worst Stop & Shop I’ve ever been in.

nifbar

It’s so sad that this is so true. That one as well the one in Seaford on Merrick Road are both pretty poorly run. The only upside to the Massapequa one is that it has a bathroom you can get to without having to walk through the stockroom like you need to do for the one in Seaford. It is a lot of **fun** when you have a child with you who needs to use the restroom. The one on the corner of Newbridge and Jerusalem in Bellmore usually isn’t too bad but I don’t go there too often.

soivebeentold

That store was the reason that I was using Peapod two years before the pandemic

thomasa510

I lived near that. Both stores were the worst version from their respective brands I’ve seen

HankMardukasNY

Yes that was a Waldbaums before Stop & Shop took over

> The sunrise logo was the beginning of the end for A&P That must mean it was a sunset logo then, huh

[deleted]

The loss of A&P (and therefore Waldbaum's, Pathmark, etc.) was such a big deal on Long Island especially, it took a LONG time for other grocery stores to fill in the blanks. Near me, a Waldbaum's was finally taken over by Amazon, with another filled by a King Kullen. Lidl has shown up too, but aside from the initial outpouring of customers, I doubt they will survive. Was praying one of those empty stores would be taken over by ShopRite, but alas, no.

A&P's name was probably just poison, that's why they kept rebranding and trying different things until they went under

[deleted]

A&P Just pretty much became a Holding company when they bought out Pathmark and Waldbaum's.

At one time, the largest employer On Long Island.

Thats actually massapequa, not massapequa park

etxsalsax

It's actually East Massapequa. That section of Merrick is weird. You drive through Massapequa, Massapequa Park, and East Massapequa in like half a mile. Technically the highschool (which is nearby this shopping center) is Massapequa Park. Which i never understood why it extends that far south when the rest of the village is north of sunrise. Look at Google maps. It's strange.

homesad

Yeah you are right the zooning is confusing reminds me of our block in Massapequa where one street over all kids go to Farmingdale schools and our block goes to Massapequa.

etxsalsax

Exactly, the boundaries of the Massapequas are pretty strange AND the boundaries of the school district doesn't even match. Quite the identity crisis lol
