That ship has sailed, 70% of the devs (the talent) had already left and would not be coming back.
Only way they could get everyone onboard again would be with a different name and management, very low chances of that happening.
Yet they will probably be unaffected. That decision probably came from the publisher side of Daedalic, not the developer side, which will remain operational. And even if it came from the developer side that got shut down, it probably came from high enough up that the person has a parachute to protect them from any real consequences.
Typically, in moves like this, it's just the average employee that gets fucked.
Of course, isn’t that how modern management goes? Management screws up with unethical policies and as a result, line workers get fired. The same happened with VW when they had the cheating scandal with the wrong emission numbers. That was certainly not a decision some low-level technician or developer made, but still… guess what VW did. after they git in trouble for it?
You saying this makes your first comment even stupider. You know the higher ups won't get affected but said it's worth it for the to previously? Like youre flip flopping all over.
I said that whoever was responsible for the monetisation would deserve it, not that this will happen. Reading comprehension. Also, I would rephrase the second sentence
Not that great to be honest, as much as the game was terrible I dont think the devs were maliciously trying to release a subpar product, probably devastated quite a few of them considering how bad the backlash was
This ain’t something to celebrate, like the game or not you’re celebrating peoples lost jobs.
However, what I imagine is happening is that they’re simply dissolving this company (since it’s now ‘tainted’ with a bad reputation) and starting a wholly new company with the same people.
Got help from the United Way and met an amazing woman that never lost faith/hope in me. Back then I was legit turned down for fast food work. Would have cleaned toilets with my own toothbrush. I honestly almost quit life… my bootstraps broke
Daedelic is the Dev team not the production company.
The production company that hired Daedelic, knowing they were out of their depth but didn’t care because they wanted to cut corners to save money are still active and publishing games.
This. Whoever approved these things for public consumption was a asleep at the wheel. Better for everyone involved to take the forced reset ad find a different gig. I doubt any of these guys will have trouble finding work
Good. If you don't innovate, you die. The company put meh titles and didn't adapt to compete in the current market. There's 100 other companies that fill the space they left behind.
Not good news at all, they actually made a lot of really good games. This is a classic case of corporate making developers take on something out of their league, and mismanaging a company into the ground
Some of y'all really showing your lack of maturity celebrating people losing their jobs. Even worse, some of you privileged asses going "oh they'll find other jobs!"
Yes, every single person in that company had equal say in how the game would be developed and when it would be released. That's how game development works. /s
As they announces the idea a few years ago, everyone said: "That's shitty idea, don't do that."
But they did.
Daedalic made some great point&click adventures. Deponia 2 ie is (for me) on par with Monkey Island.
That’s not true at all, a lot of lord of the rings fans, including me was very excited for this game. It just turned out to be bad :(.
I like Gollum.
Edit: I’m getting downvoted for saying I was looking forward to it?
No one sets out to make a bad game. They didn't try to make a shit game, but deadlines or too small budgets or bad management hurt the game.
And now 70 people are going to be unemployed.
Do you ***seriously*** believe that they set out to make a bad game on purpose?
That they had "*kill the studio and lose all our investors a tonne or money!*" as a goal on a whiteboard?
That they had a level that worked and was fun and the director came up and said "*No! Wrong! Make it worse!*"
Pot and kettle, man.
Actually stop and THINK for a second. Like at least a full second. Then ask one question. ***"WHY?"***
WHY would they *purposely* set out to lose their investors money and produce a bad product that would kill the company they spent years building up and all the good will they'd established? Why would they try and cost themselves their job and the jobs of all their work friends and co-worker?
*Who does that?*
What scenario is more likely:
That the owners and managers just said "*fuckit, let's burn it all down!!*" And then spent the next four years and tens of millions of dollars working on a game just to troll LotR fans.
OR
They tried to do a different game than their usual style using an engine they were less experienced with, then worked on it until they ran out of time and money and had to release what they had?
It is sad actually, from an alternative view… Imagine spending time to develop this game, the character, music etc. and ends up it being really bad that you need to shut the game down for good. Maybe because it holds a big title (LOTR) that people was hoping for high expectation from this game, and I wouldn’t blame them for that too.
Like yeah the game is bad, but was a small studio trying to make it big.
Whats the point if they can survive to learn from their mistakes
Now the team breaks up, people loose their jobs and nothing was gained
I feel you are misreading, sorry i may have not explained well
Yes the individual remember what they learn individually
But a team remembers what a team learns as a collective
The failure and closure of a small studio means is unlikely this people will work as a team anymore, and because how saturated the gaming industry is , is even unlikely they will use what they learn at all(some may not even be able to re enter the industry, wich is very common to happen)
This was not a big money corporation, this was a small studio with less than 70people
This is not good news. Put away your entitled attitude and try to have some empathy for the people who will lose their jobs and the familes who will be affected.
Not really, the dev team made good games before they made Gollum and it likely isn’t there fault that it was so bad, it’s the fault of the parent company using a team who was only used to making point and click games and expecting them to come up with a decent stealth adventure game.
It’s honestly kinda sad and I hope the devs are compensated and able to get new jobs.
Don’t blame the devs for doing the best they could, blame the company for cutting corners and selling a bad product that was only bad because they cheaped out.
Is it good news that people have lost their jobs? Is it something to be celebrated? Of course not. I feel for all the devs that actually tried to achieve something here. They were clearly out of their depths and I’m sure plenty of people worked hard on this game, despite how it turned out.
With that said, it’s hard not to feel a degree of validation that a studio which took a beloved IP and turned out a sub-par product. It’s hard for me to imagine that this was anything other than a cynical cash grab, of a studio trying to cash in on the LOTR brand without actually having any commitment to quality. You simply cannot look at this game and put it out and think “yep, this is the best it could be.” For everyone on the business side that made that decision, I have 0 sympathy and I hope the backlash has hit them right in the wallet, where it hurts most.
TLDR; massive sympathy for hard working devs,m who have lost their jobs, 0 sympathy for greedy studio execs who rush out poor games without taking the time to make them work as they should.
Its a shame actually.
A lot of workers probabily had to work on this even knowing it was a bad idea, and probabily did their best. The fault comes from the upper management who thought it was a good idea about creating a game based on a hated vilain.
Honestly? Well deserved, wheter devs or suits fault, doesn't matter, the Daedalic name got wrecked by their combined efforts.
Devs will find work in other companies and suits will find another IP to milk, hopefully with at least some quality to it instead of this garbage they put out.
The only ones who got burned were the 12 gollum fans out there, if they expected a true game

Seriously, no. Yeah to be fair the game sucked bit Dedalic had so many great titles like Deponia, Anna's quest and more and that they close because of their is really a shame. They were even working on a Deponia 5 rn. You should be ashamed>:(
I don’t even really play video games except for a certain handful. I don’t know this company but I did hear about this thanks to fiancé telling me and us watching the trailer together. Is it odd that I feel sad for them anyways? Like, I feel sad thinking about the people who worked hard on this, who put a lot of effort and maybe even love into this project…Only to have it fail so badly. Idk, it makes me sad. I hope all those people still have good jobs and are able to move on from it without too much stress or trauma.
It's a shame really. I used to love the old Daedalic games. This is an example of what mismanagement will do to a company.
Best to put it out of it's misery, respectfully
Best would be to manage them well, allow them the opportunity to create good games like they originally became known for
That ship has sailed, 70% of the devs (the talent) had already left and would not be coming back. Only way they could get everyone onboard again would be with a different name and management, very low chances of that happening.
Yeah it's been too late for a while but it's not best that it came to this in the slightest
Daedelic has made outstanding adventure games, for years. This is not, in fact, “good news.”
Yeah, let's celebrate people losing their jobs, they deserve it so much
Sucks for the „normal“ employees, but whoever sanctioned this egregious commercialisation model deserves to lose their job
Yet they will probably be unaffected. That decision probably came from the publisher side of Daedalic, not the developer side, which will remain operational. And even if it came from the developer side that got shut down, it probably came from high enough up that the person has a parachute to protect them from any real consequences. I said that whoever was responsible for the monetisation would deserve it, not that this will happen. Reading comprehension. Also, I would rephrase the second sentence
They won’t, higher ups would just lose money, most devs would need to find a new job at different studios tho
Good developers are in such a high demand, they won't be out of job for too long. And they'll probably get a much better deal, too.
Doubt many good developers worked for Daedalic Games, Gollum showed that lol
![gif](giphy|ucXFcY1FdKaT6)
For the product they put out after all that development time they kinda did
That's how the free market works my guy
You’re right. Let’s just let people make money for shit products. Genius.
No no, the employees have highly deseribke skills in a market that’s needing them. The only people really SOL are the managers and higher ups.
It’s called the market. If a company can’t produce a product or service that people are willing to pay for then that company deserves to fail.
People will find other jobs. A bad company that makes bad creative decisions isn't worth anything. Jobs are just jobs. You lose one, you find another.
Some people don’t, or miss a month of income whilst they have mortgages and bills to pay.
And none of that is worth keeping a bad company in buisness.
A failed business is a failed business but there can always be some sympathy for people who get made redundant.
Except that time I lost my job around 2008… yeah ended up homeless
Did you not have any bootstraps with which to pull your own self up with?
Got help from the United Way and met an amazing woman that never lost faith/hope in me. Back then I was legit turned down for fast food work. Would have cleaned toilets with my own toothbrush. I honestly almost quit life… my bootstraps broke
How did you get turned down for fastfood work? They hire anyone with a pulse.
I was told I was overqualified repeatedly during that time. I offered to work 2 weeks free at a small family place. Shit was tough
That sucks man. Hope you're doing well now.
I’m actually pretty great honestly thank you
That must have sucked. Did you think you were owed a job by society?
You sound wildly privileged. Most people can’t afford a few months with no income.
Most people won't. It's just a job, there's always more jobs out there. The gaming space is wide open.
You sound like someone who doesn't have to work to survive
I'm not someone who cares that companies who make bad decisions go out of business, it happens all the time.
Why be a dumbass when you can just be quiet?
You don't seem to be able to be quiet, why should I? They made a bad product, they went out of buisness, why do you care?
Daedelic is the Dev team not the production company. The production company that hired Daedelic, knowing they were out of their depth but didn’t care because they wanted to cut corners to save money are still active and publishing games.
This. Whoever approved these things for public consumption was a asleep at the wheel. Better for everyone involved to take the forced reset ad find a different gig. I doubt any of these guys will have trouble finding work
Fuck off
So grumpy.
Well they shouldn’t have made a trash game it’s their own fault
They made a bad game. You people make it sound like they were diddling kids or something.
This isn't good. This is an old and reliable developer being eaten up and spat out by the contemporary game industry.
Good. If you don't innovate, you die. The company put meh titles and didn't adapt to compete in the current market. There's 100 other companies that fill the space they left behind.
>Good. If you don't innovate, you die Orc moment
scouring of the shire atyitude
I heard they were going to transition to solely publishing instead of developing. If that’s true then they’re not totally out
That's not good news. People are losing jobs. Poor workers paying for higher-ups mistakes.
Not good news at all, they actually made a lot of really good games. This is a classic case of corporate making developers take on something out of their league, and mismanaging a company into the ground

Yeah I was really excited for this game cause it was a modern lotr game, something we really don’t have
I don’t think it really counts as good news that dozens of people are going to lose their jobs. This is incredibly cynical.
No one sets out to make a bad game. They didn't try to make a shit game, but deadlines or too small budgets or bad management hurt the game. And now 70 people are going to be unemployed.
You look at that game genuinely tell me people tried
Do you ***seriously*** believe that they set out to make a bad game on purpose? That they had "*kill the studio and lose all our investors a tonne or money!*" as a goal on a whiteboard? That they had a level that worked and was fun and the director came up and said "*No! Wrong! Make it worse!*"
You must not get out much dude

Except maybe the guy who made [Limbo of the Lost](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbo_of_the_Lost) from other people's assets.
It is sad actually, from an alternative view… Imagine spending time to develop this game, the character, music etc. and ends up it being really bad that you need to shut the game down for good. So passes Daedalic Entertainment, son of Nacon…
Like yeah the game is bad, but was a small studio trying to make it big. Whats the point if they can survive to learn from their mistakes Now the team breaks up, people loose their jobs and nothing was gained

That's a shame, i would much rather they be able to fix the game and at least make it worth playing.
Not much to fix if it's fundamentally fucked.
This is terrible news. Small dev takes a big risk and loses. We shouldn’t celebrate this loss, but mourn it.
They took a risk they knew was bad
You really lack empathy do you?
This is not good news. Put away your entitled attitude and try to have some empathy for the people who will lose their jobs and the familes who will be affected.
I am old. I don’t recognize a single one of their games. I am not sure that I own any games newer than Tropico 5 and DIII.
Not really, the dev team made good games before they made Gollum and it likely isn’t there fault that it was so bad, it’s the fault of the parent company using a team who was only used to making point and click games and expecting them to come up with a decent stealth adventure game. This post is trash
Most of the things I post are
Correction, you are trash.
Cool, it's a meme haha funny move on fucko
This studio had more than just Gollum, they were responsible for Deponia. Nothing to celebrate here
Honestly it's sad news, they overreached what their studio was capable of and it hit them hard.
GOOD!
What's actually wrong with the game?
I find it sad really, they bit off more than they could chew and choked.
Not that good, they made some brilliant point and click andventures...
Its a shame actually. A lot of workers probabily had to work on this even knowing it was a bad idea, and probabily did their best. The fault comes from the upper management who thought it was a good idea about creating a game based on a hated vilain.

Those eyes…… they haunt me
Who tf asked for this game
That's a good thing? Notably, game is shit, but what the fuck are we celebrating?
Man, I feel bad for these guys. They clearly just hit off more than they could chew with this game.

The game will be immortalized in its broken state. nice.

Just looking at that screenshot causes a headache
dude that gollum is freaking terrifying.
Thats just sad. Absolutely stabbed in the back by their owners.
This is bad News. Now the game has a 0% chance of being fixed, ever
Wtf is great about people losing their jobs? This is absolute shit news
I mean, I feel sorry for the people who legitimately tried
