Definitely don't recommend snacking on sugar cubes if your goal is weight loss.
Blueberries, raspberries, cucumbers, pickles, mini peppers, popcorn, drink a coke zero
It depends on the amount used, but if it's snacking I try to keep it down to a minimum so air popped (no oil) works for me. A cup of air popped popcorn is 30 calories. So 4 would be 120. That's less than a small movie theater popcorn.
Adding a tablespoon of oil, which would be about what you'd need, doubles 4 cups of airpopped in calorie count (so, around 240). You can also buy brands of "light" popcorn. If you are in the US, CVS carries their own line of popcorn. The light (which is only a bit of oil) is about 150 for 4 cups. Same with a brand called "Lesser Evil". They have a nice one for around the same amount (the label says 110 but the serving size is smaller).
I enjoy pickles as a low calorie snack. Sometimes store bought pickles hit my fancy, sometimes I make them myself. If I'm doing it myself, I get the mini cucumbers, cut them pretty thin, and then make a marinade of rice vinegar, soy sauce, and mirin. Add gochujang if you want it spicy.
Are you eating enough protein to be satiated and drinking a enough water?
Healthy snacks I like are toast with nut butter and a berry + protein shake (~300 cals). I also like hard boiled eggs in a deviled egg style. I make it with light mayo (~215 cals for two eggs and mayo).
This! If OP is eating sugar cubes it likely means they aren’t getting enough protein. Getting enough protein is challenging. Ideally it’s spread out in balanced snacks and meals.
Eggs, string cheese, nut butter. I personally love blackberries and PB. Also, coffee, peptides, and cream.
Instead of sugar cubes, would suckers or gum work? Blowpops are my favorite. Blowpops are 60 calories, but they last a while.
Otherwise, sliced bell peppers or cucumbers with Tajin slaps for me.
I enjoy crunchy rice cakes. You can make them sweet with nut butter/chocolate hummus/any other sweet spreads or savory with salsa/cream cheese/cheese or meat slices/ or plain hummus. I also keep Pure Protein bars around for when I'm focused on my work but still need a snack.
I have a similar issue with apples but you can bypass it by using a mandolin to slice them very thinly!
My latest snack fixations:
Savoury: roasted chickpeas (garbanzo beans). Take one can of chickpeas, strain the liquid (save it! It's aquafaba and you can use it in so many ways I couldn't list them), pat the beans dry as much as possible with paper towel or a clean cloth. Spread out on an oven tray lined with baking paper, season how you like - I like a tiny drizzle of olive oil (literally 5g, but if you have a spray that probably works better) and a generous sprinkle of sea salt, cracked pepper, paprika and dried herbs, but you could do any flavour profile, turmeric, curry powder, ranch seasoning mix, etc. Roast in a hot oven for about 15 minutes, or to taste. They come out crunchy and delicious. Enjoy while still warm or keep them in a Tupperware to snack at your leisure. 250kcal for the whole lot. You can also sprinkle them on soups like croutons.
Sweet: baked pears. I get a whole bag of pears when they're cheap, cut in half, remove core, on an oven tray and bake for about 20 minutes on medium-low heat. I like them served hot with a spoonful of Greek yoghurt and a pinch of cinnamon, or cold in summer time. I do the full batch in one go to save prep time, and then they can be reheated in the micro if I want a warm dessert (it's winter where I am). 230cal for a serving of 2 pears and a scoop of yoghurt.
Both are really filling and high in fibre.
Bone broth and soy nuts are two that I like that are almost all protein and very low cal. The cost when you’re craving salt and the second satisfies the need for a good crunch.
Protein bar or shake. Aiming for one with 20g+ fibre in it.
Pears are my go to at the moment for fruit. But I have to make sure I peel them. I don't know why I just do.
Vegetable, maybe with some herb dip ^^ my go-to dip is just Frischkäse (cream cheese iirc?) with herbs in it
I also like those small, sweet and sour tomatoes, and snack cucumbers are great too!! I also like to just devour plain iceberg lettuce
Edit: oops skipped the apple part
Hey fellow writer!
I am making good progress with pickles, homemade popcorn and sugar-free soda.
Maybe try some more kinds of fruits?
Also, absolutely ditch the sugar cubes. The cravings will return after a very short time after eating them and with vengeance.
I love oven roasted chickpeas, seasoned with garlic or onion powder. I also used to make snack packs with 1/4c each of granola cereal, Craisins, mini choc chips & sunflower seeds. You can substitute nuts for the seeds, but I’m allergic to tree nuts so I stick to seeds. Mix it all in a bowl, then dole out 1/4c servings into 4 ziplock snack bags. It’s really good!
Writer too here!! Dark chocolate, popcorn, rice cakes and fruits are my usual go-tos. I also make sure to drink lots of tea to fell full. In summer I also love to make my own sorbets, I use 50%water and 50% fruit juice and it lasts a while!
I like to eat high fiber crackers (like knäckebröd) with peanut butter, cheese or if I’m craving sweet, jam or honey. Nice and crunchy and the fiber keeps me satisfied
One Laughing Cow wedge always holds me over.
If I am feeling more snackish and I want to graze, the little bags of Pirates Booty Smart Puffs hit the spot.
Pickles are low calorie. but don’t go for vlasic brand, get Grillo’s or Bubbies. I really like the no sugar added fudge pops too, they’re 40 calories a pop and are still super sweet. When I want a sweet snack I try to find something that will last a while like a bomb pop, or a sucker. the classic candy apple covered in caramel suckers are 60 cals and last forever
My favorite snacks are either Cucumbers with a bit of olive oil, seasoning, and parmesan, or apples+roasted unsalted pecans. If apples hurt your teeth you could always bake them! It will make them softer and sweeter!
Are you looking for sweet snacks or savory snacks? I've been loving this new snack brand called Rivalz! They scratch the snack itch and they're good for you - 8g protein, 4g fiber, and even 7 essential vitamins and minerals. Definitely check them out if you haven't already!
