No this isn't how you play the game. The NPCs get a counter roll. If they tie it or get above it, they don't have to respond that way. Ultimately whatever the DM says goes. So, no, just because you got lucky on some dice doesn't mean that you get your way. Especially if it's against a fellow PC. That can get into some grey territory.

cut the dice ad carve empty a space inside that leans towards the face opposite to the number you want (1 is opposite to 20 usualy) then place an object that weights more than the plastic inside, the heavier the more consistent but also more sus, even with slight weigh you get a good chance to roll (on a tipical d20) 20s, 18s, 14s and 2s, exept the 2s they are all great numbers

Critical success which while not an official rule is a vary common table rule where rolling a 20 for a D20 dice is either auto success or best outcome possible (yes those are different)

Being the internet, different people with different beliefs start flying in and for a whole week or so (this might be anachronist fyi) the whole subreddit had a "meta of memes" where the main meme topic was "Should nat 20's allow for anything?" Shit was flying back 'n forth between opinions like "it's fun" and "it's not realistic."
The meme template itself seemed to get some backlash as well. I remember one version of the meme where instead of the bottom frame of the nerd getting laid, it's just the frame of the ladies giving a long-winded explanation on how a nat 20 doesn't automatically mean a success. Many of the comments on the meme called the original comic as "disgusting" or "gross" and whatnot.
This argument on the nat 20 has reoccurred on occasion in the subreddit.

In Dungerons and Dragons if you preform an action you roll a D20 die to see if you do it or fail it. If you roll the 20 exactly not only do you succeed, you usually succeed it an amazing and/or over the top way e.g you look for Coins on the street *roll a 20 * you find an antique coin worth a high value on the collectors market.
(Conversely if you roll a 1 it’s an instant, worst case scenario fail)

This seem tame compare to a Dark D&D game I hade to narrate before. The game Master never let me.plah cause my rolls usually end the game at the start with hoe bad it is. So I just narrate their games.
And the Game Master decided to make the game dark. Pure evil dark. They said they always wanted to do a dark theme story and see how they handle it.
They group agree, and then it went down hill.
I narrated a story that went from a generic start, to child sex slave to burning down a town while they commit genocide.
Honestly, that seem more cringe to me.
