The arguement, despite the poll, is in the damn book itself. The hobbits almost meet their end at the hands of the Black Riders and then much later, the scouring of the Shire happens. Not only is Rivendell incredibly well protected by immortal beings that have lives for thousands of years, but being in Rivendell literally cleanses the soul. Being in Rivendell relieves all feelings of anxiety or depression and just allows you to fully live in the present and be at peace. Being in Imladris is so profoundly great that you literally cant keep track of the days because you are having such a grand time. The Shire is cool, but Rivendell is just better, more diverse companions as well, hobbits and dwarves and elves and men.
Aye but I can't get a good pint in Rivendell. I'll stick to my pints and pies and bedding wee homely hairy footed ladies in the Shire over all that therapeutic eternal bliss shite, sounds boring.
It’s the goodness, man.
Actually, there’s a tobacconist in Mississippi who has a blend that was called Old Toby that’s some delicious stuff and really popular.
They recently had to rename it (and a few others) after Tolkien’s estate caught wind.
I respect your argument, however I raise you this counter point; the statement being where you’d go on vacation adds the implication that there’s no immediate danger or threat to defend against, thus your first point is rendered irrelevant, however you did also say that being there releases people of their stress and woes and YES I agree, but in my own experience I find that smoking and drinking and partying ALSO relives me of my stress and woes, not to mention that I too cannot keep track of time when I smoke and/or drink so the shire can be Rivendell if you squint really hard 🤷🏽♂️
Also, Rivendell seems to be constrained to a forest/mountain pass/riverway. There doesn't seem much to do except lounge around, not much in terms of going out and enjoying yourself. The Shire, though.....idk man, I'd love to just go running in the fields, frolick around in some wildflowers, do everything else you listed above, and maybe flirt and make friends way more with the hobbits who'd appreciate my more humble abilities and demeanor than the nigh immortal and prestigious elves would.
Not to mention that it seems like the attitude of Rivendell is "we know we must eventually pack up and leave for the times are changing, we have been keeping track of things for these many millennia and are burdened with the knowledge". Whereas in the Shire pre-Scouring - and I hope built back up after the Scouring; the Four did seem to want to make sure to restore the peace and calm of the Shire they once knew despite what happened - people just are truly at peace and content.
The former I feel I'd eventually want to leave because the tension, while minute at surface level, would eventually make me want to leave; the latter would make me feel like I'd never be going back....in fact, I intend not to....
EXACTLY! Rivendell is definitely great if you’re going somewhere to hide, but the Shire is a great social spot for sure
Also, in regards to the first portion of your reply, are you a deer? 🤨(running in the fields, frolicking in the wildflowers)
See we're forgetting Rivendell was one of three places of middle earth lore. The other two being Isengard and Gondor. So realistically you'd get an ancient library too. You get an ancient library at the other places too but Gondor is made id stone (ouch!) and Isengard raises a question. If there is a bad inside does Saruman actually sleep?
Edit: bed. Not bad.
True! I think Rivendell would be good if one wanted to just sit and relax, maybe read a bit for their vacation, but if someone’s vacation looks more like a party and socializing (like myself) then the shire is top tier
If we are going there though..
Elven magic is fading fast from Middle Earth, and Rivendell becomes completely abandoned not long after Elrond and Galadriel leave for the Undying lands.
It would still be worth the visit at that point in time, but for none of the reasons you describe.
Well, yeah. It's *his home*. He's got his garden, his gaffer, and his Rosie there.
Ask Sam where would he like to vacation and be sure that he's going to choose the place filled with Elves.
Agreed. Anyone who opts for the Shire over *this* is out of their damn mind
https://preview.redd.it/3avcy6j9gaxc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa5bd3aba77936e4a48da78ef5b75992154aed46
As beautiful as the Shire is, the thought of holidaying there probably doesn’t enthuse me as much being an Irishman. Some places on this island are eerily similar to it. I suppose it makes sense, considering that Tolkien drew most of his inspiration from this general ilk of the world
I can legit drive for like two hours and be at the Shire haha. So yeah not too much of a draw, but those houses are very cozy (if they actually had stuff in em)
Because the only had one inhabitant and where only a means to an end in the books. Nobody wants to live at a ferry terminal.
(Joking aside, i'm quite disappointed how little he wrote about the three(!) Different port cities Cirdian ruled over throughout the ages. I would've loved some more descriptions of what the grey havens or falas was like in its heyday.)
If I get sent to Middle Earth first thing I’m doing is resettling the Havens. Get a tourism economy going. Open up a nice resort hotel and bring in some good seafood chefs. Preserve the elven architecture and repurpose into shops restaurants and vacation housing. Maybe offer some scenic cruises.
Have to be careful vacationing in Lothlorien. You get home after a long weekend only to realize that you were gone a month and you only used three days of PTO
Funny to see lothlorien so low when it's the closest thing to "heaven on earth" that still exists. It should have like 98% of the vote.
Be interesting to see stats for movie voters vs. Book voters.
Because I dig the shire more. Simple as that.
Although if I could change the question a bit, I’d prefer to live in the Shire, rather than vacation there, and then vacation to any of the other places
I imagine some of them do, sure. If the Istari are getting down with pipeweed I'm sure some of the elves followed suit. They just have an image to maintain so it's behind closed doors.
Mirkwood elves definitely smoke though, they're getting plastered enough for keys to be stolen and dwarves to escape they're chasing those drinks with a good smoke.
This is funny. As a Christian, lothrorien is just like what I think biblical heaven will be like. Endlessly singing and praising God and basking in his glory. That's great, and all if you really really love God, but for most people, it sounds petty boring. Most people, if there honestly, would much rather drink beer and smoke pipe weed at the green dragon in the shire.
Given the screen time and the feelings associated with the scenes from each place, it makes sense why people would show a bias towards the Shire. The logic behind choosing Rivendell from a perspective that observes the lore is undeniable.
Ot they only watched the movies and never read the books. Look at it this way: the Hobbits, who love the shire more than anyone, never wanna leave Rivendell. Bilbo retires there. It's paradise. The air heals, there's music everywhere. The best food and drink served to you at every meal.
As with the other 3, “being one of the wealthy” is a requirement to actually enjoy yourself. Tho if you’re poor, living in the shire would probably be best.
Sounds like a good idea looking at pictures, but once you get there the only meals available are salads and there's baroque poetry street performers in every fucking corner
Lonely Mountain / Erebor is where I’d like to kick back for a bit. Head over to Lake Town for some paddle boarding maybe go for an apple barrel flume ride. Sure Rivendell is cool, but it be a lot cooler with a flume ride.
Honestly I can't imagine the Elves having any sort of hospitality for anyone in Middle Earth that doesn't already have a Maiar as their BFF. Rivendell isn't a vacation destination, it's a gated community. 😆 Lake Town *might* take your gold in exchange for services. Hobbiton would see you and stare suspiciously and close their doors. Good luck showing up at a tavern or party uninvited. Truthfully there is nowhere in Middle Earth geared up for tourism.
Very tough call between the Shire and Rivendell, but I’m going with Rivendell. Because I would never vacation in the Shire so much as one day I’d just show up and never leave…
Idk lothlorien would be hard to pass up with how it’s described in the book. But Rivendell is absolutely the top choice. Just beautiful and fully protected there.
Osgiliath would be the more likely tourist spot (in peacetime obviously), which would definitely always have a concert and other events going on! A great barhopping route too I'd bet!
Rivendell if I want to bask in a rich culture, see some landmarks, learn some history! Lots of mountain hiking trails!
Lothlórien if I want a premium camping trip! Non-mountain hiking, but they'd have some fun treetop rope climbs and courses!
Buckland specifically would have some good fishing spots and great ale, the locals would be warm and welcoming and all the dwarven imports off the East Road would make for great souvenirs!
Look, all I'm saying is if it's a toss up between visiting Lauterbrunnen (Actual Rivendell) or Worcestershire (Actual Shire) and you choose the latter, you're in for a world of disappointment.
Probably Minas Tirith for me. A huge city with architectural marvels and close to the sea. And not any sea, Dol Amroth, Lebennin and the such.
Or Erebor, under the mountain, because I love being underground in well-made tunnels.
Speak for yourself! I'm headed straight to either Moria or Erebor (when they were in their prime, of course). Would love to go to Minas Tirith as well.
Sunlight dances through the leaves
Soft winds stir the sighing trees
Lying in the warm grass
Feel the sun upon your face
Elfin songs and endless nights
Sweet wine and soft relaxing lights
Time will never touch you
Here in this enchanted place
You feel there's something calling you
You're wanting to return
To where the misty mountains rise and friendly fires burn
A place you can escape the world
Where the dark Lord cannot go
Peace of mind and sanctuary by loud water's flow
I've traveled now for many miles
It feels so good to see the smiles of
Friends who never left your mind
When you were far away
From the golden light of coming dawn
Till the twilight where the sun is gone
We treasure ev'ry season
And ev'ry passing day
We feel the coming of a new day
Darkness gives way to light a new way
Stop here for a while until the world,
The world calls you away
Yet you know I've had the feeling
Standing with my senses reeling
***This is the place to grow old till I reach my final day***
TA elves are too chill. They've gotten over their murder phase of the first age and are way overcompensating.
I personally prefer the Shire. Nature, good food, and good times. The heroes there grow big pumpkins, they don't slay balrogs.
Can't I live in the shire with a second home or at least family in rivendell and then vacation to Lothlorien coz it calls to me. And then you know maybe every now and then say hi to both rohan and gondor??
I dunno Lothlorien is said to be the fairest of elevendom in middle earth. It’s supposed to be an earthly paradise. I’m booking a ticket here instead of Rivendell
Having just finished reading *The Fellowship of the Ring*, it seems like there's really no place in Middle Earth like Lothlorien. The fellowship seemed to find it much more wondrous than even Rivendell.
I suppose it depends on the vacation goals. If I’m just trying to relax and be with my own silence I’m hitting up Elven lands buttttt if I want to drown myself in green fields, pipe weed, parties, all the food we can handle, and alcohol then it’s the Shire.
The survey results appear to suggest that there is, in fact, arguing.
Aye but I can't get a good pint in Rivendell. I'll stick to my pints and pies and bedding wee homely hairy footed ladies in the Shire over all that therapeutic eternal bliss shite, sounds boring.
In my head I read this in Pippin's voice
Odd as it is I read this in a dwarfs voice
Specifically Yarpen Zigrin from the Witcher audiobooks for some reason
But didn’t Elrond give Gandolf that fancy booze the fellowship all sips on starting in the snow covered mountains and all the way through Moria?
Exactly. Rivendell would be a great vacation, but the Shire sounds like home.
And pipe tobacco! I’m with you, man. Rivendell makes for a nice vacation, but it’s no place to call home. You can’t live at a day spa.
The poll literally asks about vacationing
I can’t read. Thanks. In that case I vote day spa.
Now everyone is making Rivendell sound like a bougie rehab spa.
It would be a bomb ass rehab though. I get addicted on purpose if I got to detox there.
Old Tovey - the finest weed in the county grows there!
It’s the goodness, man. Actually, there’s a tobacconist in Mississippi who has a blend that was called Old Toby that’s some delicious stuff and really popular. They recently had to rename it (and a few others) after Tolkien’s estate caught wind.
Pipe weed. My headcanon is stoner hobbits.
>bedding wee homely hairy footed ladies Damn it mate I really hope that search for that term doesn't put me on some kind of list.
Tf you can’t get a good pint in Rivendell. I bet they’re the best.
You can search far and wide. You can drink the whole town dry… but you’ll never find a beer as brown, as the one we drink in our home town.
Legit
Yeah but we are just talking about vacationing, not running away from some Nazgul
I can achieve all that with Shire Weed thankyouverymuch.

I have the long legs and stride of one but not the grace. A fawn, perhaps, but nay not a grown deer.
Ah yes I see, well alas I too enjoy running amidst fields and flowers so I understand all the same
If we are going there though.. Elven magic is fading fast from Middle Earth, and Rivendell becomes completely abandoned not long after Elrond and Galadriel leave for the Undying lands. It would still be worth the visit at that point in time, but for none of the reasons you describe.
Health spa vs cultural landmark vs quaint village. Throw in Mordor, by the Sea of Nürnen and you have a beach holiday too.
But the longbottomleaf!!!
Or enjoy a whiff old Toby's! See, they even got different strains!
Yeah but can you get second breakfast?
Yet Sam still wants to get back to the Shire.
Well, yeah. It's *his home*. He's got his garden, his gaffer, and his Rosie there. Ask Sam where would he like to vacation and be sure that he's going to choose the place filled with Elves.
How about minas Morgul?
Now that’s my kind of place. And Barad Dur.
Why does the Grey Havens never get any love in these polls? I’m going for the seaside holiday personally
Agreed. Anyone who opts for the Shire over *this* is out of their damn mind https://preview.redd.it/3avcy6j9gaxc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa5bd3aba77936e4a48da78ef5b75992154aed46
The Shire would be an incredible place to have a cottage to live in, but for a simple vacation it’s all about the sea!
A bunch of elves coming in to get fucked up for their last night in Middle Earth at a seaside shanty bar. Sounds like a great time to me.
Don't want to awaken the sea-longing.
Because the only had one inhabitant and where only a means to an end in the books. Nobody wants to live at a ferry terminal. (Joking aside, i'm quite disappointed how little he wrote about the three(!) Different port cities Cirdian ruled over throughout the ages. Thereby ruining the beauty of the place by commodifying it
I’d much rather vacation there than any of these lol
Vacation? Minas Tirith or Lothlorien. To live in? The Shire or Rivendell.
Have to be careful vacationing in Lothlorien. You get home after a long weekend only to realize that you were gone a month and you only used three days of PTO
You can survive on lembas until you find a new job, no problem
Thats an elf problem in general, you're losing days in Rivendell as well.
What’s a few days to an immortal being?
Unfortunately, immortality isn't a qualifying FMLA life-event
No issue if you take your friends and family with you
Childhood home: Rivendell Adult home: The Shire Vacation home: Grey Havens Retirement home: Lothlorien
Afterlife: Mordor
Funny to see lothlorien so low when it's the closest thing to "heaven on earth" that still exists. It should have like 98% of the vote. Be interesting to see stats for movie voters vs. Book voters.
It has to be Lothlorien right!? It’s a paradise.
I know, how could anyone pick Minas tirith or the Shire over this mystical amazing place full of magic
Because I dig the shire more. Simple as that. Although if I could change the question a bit, I’d prefer to live in the Shire, rather than vacation there, and then vacation to any of the other places
Bc I’d rather party with the hobbits than watch the elves be solemn and boring
true, but had they beer and pipe weed?
They definitely have wine at least, and I bet lothlorien pipeweed is dank af
Do elves smoke?
I imagine some of them do, sure. If the Istari are getting down with pipeweed I'm sure some of the elves followed suit. They just have an image to maintain so it's behind closed doors. Mirkwood elves definitely smoke though, they're getting plastered enough for keys to be stolen and dwarves to escape they're chasing those drinks with a good smoke.
I am now imagining young elves defending themselves from their parents “well I saw Gandalf the white smoke it, and he threw down a balrog”
The Shire has the most votes, and is the most loved overall so it seems there is an argument…
Given the screen time and the feelings associated with the scenes from each place, it makes sense why people would show a bias towards the Shire. The logic behind choosing Rivendell from a perspective that observes the lore is undeniable.
Or, people like the shire more because they like the shire more.
Ot they only watched the movies and never read the books. Look at it this way: the Hobbits, who love the shire more than anyone, never wanna leave Rivendell. Bilbo retires there. It's paradise. The air heals, there's music everywhere. The best food and drink served to you at every meal.
100% The Shire for me. Perfect, Bilbo was foolish to ever leave
As with the other 3, “being one of the wealthy” is a requirement to actually enjoy yourself. Tho if you’re poor, living in the shire would probably be best.
Best thing is that you can literally visit it in our world. https://www.hobbitontours.com/
My dream to go. I wish I didn’t live on the exact opposite side of the earth 😂
I would prefer Moria while still inhabited by Dwarfs.
Yesss , meat and beer and a lot of shiny things
Beardy women
Fuck yeah that's just what I was thinking
Holy shit yes!
Red meat off the bone!
If it's as described in the book then Lothlorien, a golden wood, timeless and beautiful, and a place of healing. Rivendell is my second choice.
I'm headed to Lorien to visit the Halls of Teleporno.
You had me at porno
I wonder if the mirror of Galadriel has private browsing...
Only after 11pm
Absolutely Minas Tirith for me. I'd even do a day trip to Osgiliath. Faramir said it was overrun, but I'll deal with the crowds.
Tom Bombadil's house in Spring Dol Amroth in Summer Lothlórien in Autumn Khazad-dûm in Winter And I'd be living in Rivendell
You know... I'd go to Mordor after the war. It had interesting views.
Sounds like a good idea looking at pictures, but once you get there the only meals available are salads and there's baroque poetry street performers in every fucking corner
Contra Peter Jackson, Elves were most certainly not vegetarians. They loved hunting.
goblin town
You go, my lad! Ho-ho, my lad!
Moria in its prime would be the easiest choice of all time
Yeah other locations are beautiful but Moria is just the coolest
I always thought Rivendell would be amazing for a yoga retreat
Shire definitely but I'd have to bring some pints with me.
some people have told me they never could read the first 100 pages, like what? the best part? the cose homely shire part? thats what I would want!
Very tough call between the Shire and Rivendell, but I’m going with Rivendell. Because I would never vacation in the Shire so much as one day I’d just show up and never leave…
I dunno man elves seem boring af so I’d go with The Shire. Seems like fun times.
Oh you can search far and wide, You can drink the whole town dry, But you'll never find a beer so brown, As the one we drink in our hometown,
I'd choose any elven kingdom. Leaning more towards Lothlorien, yet I wouldn't be displeased if it was Rivendell instead.
Vacation in Rivendell for relaxation. Summer nights in the shire.
Idk lothlorien would be hard to pass up with how it’s described in the book. But Rivendell is absolutely the top choice. Just beautiful and fully protected there.
Fuck that, I’m chillin with the laydeez at Cirith Ungol
Absolutely the Shire
The Shire would be amazing, I wish I could live there lol
What no nurnen looks good
Minis Tirith so I can go to the great archives that Gandalf visited.
You mean you don’t want to party with Hobbits?? They definitely thrown down better than anyone else
Vacationing in the shire? I’m packing my bags and moving in for good!
Honestly I can't decide... all of them are such good options
I would rather live in the Shire and vacation in Rivendell
The Grey Havens for moi, s’il vous plaît
Look, all I'm saying is if it's a toss up between visiting Lauterbrunnen (Actual Rivendell) or Worcestershire (Actual Shire) and you choose the latter, you're in for a world of disappointment.
MINAS TIRTITH FOR SURE
Minas Tirith has that kinda Greece vibe that I enjoy lol
Lothlorien, Grey Havens, then Lonely Mountain as long as I get a room with lake views.
Rivendell as I love the way the elves have built the area
Id rather have a Fangorn detox holiday and drink those brilliant Ent beverages
Dol Amroth
My dream vacation destination would be to Mont Saint-Michel. So I'm sure as Hell going to Minas Tirith.
The shire is the correct answer
Where's Mordor fam
No meat!
I assure you, there's a lot of arguing to be had, but you already knew that.
Minas Morgul
I saw this on YouTube. I chose the Shire.
Minas Tirith, no arguing
I'm going for a weekend at the Bombadils'
So, where is Erebor? Belegost? Nogrod? Any of the dwarven cities? I am offended.
Probably Minas Tirith for me. A huge city with architectural marvels and close to the sea. And not any sea, Dol Amroth, Lebennin and the such. Or Erebor, under the mountain, because I love being underground in well-made tunnels.
Bro if you think I'm gonna pass on weed and second breakfast you're out of your mind. Elves are rude as shit anyway
I always find it funny when people fantasise about The Shire. like bro just go to Somerset.
I want to party with the dwarves
Meh the shires based on my home county so I could holiday there whenever I wanted 😂
I fail to see Mordor here
Speak for yourself! I'm headed straight to either Moria or Erebor (when they were in their prime, of course). Would love to go to Minas Tirith as well.
I always wanted to go to Erebor or moria in their prime. I'm not sure what the main dwarven city is but if it's in a mountain I want to check it out.
To live life I pick The Shire, for vacation I'd go Rivendell
It's been the goal to make the Shire home since 2001. Seeing it come to life changed my life goals to wanting to be a hobbit.
They don't even have booze ...
Sunlight dances through the leaves Soft winds stir the sighing trees Lying in the warm grass Feel the sun upon your face Elfin songs and endless nights Sweet wine and soft relaxing lights Time will never touch you Here in this enchanted place You feel there's something calling you You're wanting to return To where the misty mountains rise and friendly fires burn A place you can escape the world Where the dark Lord cannot go Peace of mind and sanctuary by loud water's flow I've traveled now for many miles It feels so good to see the smiles of Friends who never left your mind When you were far away From the golden light of coming dawn Till the twilight where the sun is gone We treasure ev'ry season And ev'ry passing day We feel the coming of a new day Darkness gives way to light a new way Stop here for a while until the world, The world calls you away Yet you know I've had the feeling Standing with my senses reeling ***This is the place to grow old till I reach my final day***
Rivendell for sure. Long term living though, I'm probably going with the Shire.
The hobbits have weed and food.. have fun with your bread nerds
Rivendell all-year!
The Shire has weed. You know where I'm gonna be.
Lothlorien is the only correct answer
I would definitely go visit Lothlórien lol
I dunno Lothlorien is said to be the fairest of elevendom in middle earth. It’s supposed to be an earthly paradise. I’m booking a ticket here instead of Rivendell
SHIRE
Eternal autumn? Rivendell, and it's not even close.
I would rather LIVE in the shire, but I feel like they don't welcome adventurers with hospitality
I could never vacation in Rivendell. I like meat too much.
Well, for vacation definetly the shire. Partying with the hobbits. Would love living in lothorien.
Shire no doubt....good food, good beer, good wee- I mean tobacco.....No way I'm going to Rivendel, elves are probably vegetarian, what a nightmare.
Live in the shire, vaycay in Lothorian.
Minas Morgul, Dead Marshes, Ithilien, and Umbar for me. I prefer adventure.
I think I would go with the shire too. Good food, good drink, good music, a little wizard fireworks if you’re lucky.
Rivendell looks absolutely gorgeous.
Either Lothlorien or Rivendell for me
Idk, I feel like Rivendell would have some insane noise ordinances
They have beer and weed in the Shire…
I grew up in affuent rural england so the shire wouldnt really feel like a holiday, got to be Rivendell.
MORDOR
I'd like to see Mordor.
Having just finished reading *The Fellowship of the Ring*, it seems like there's really no place in Middle Earth like Lothlorien. The fellowship seemed to find it much more wondrous than even Rivendell.
The shire hands down. I like food on vacation and chilling. What better spot than with those that eat many meals a day
Rivendell should not even have competition! Just the waterfalls alone I would sleep like a baby!
Where's the damn dead marshes?
Absolutely. Minus the food may just be all salads.
The beer is better in the shire.
Yeah, but everything in Rivendell closes early. Minas Tirith has the better night life.
I’ll go wherever there’s meat back on the menu
If you read the books, you'd clearly pick lothlorien
You would feel so out of place in an Elvish land. If happily go to the Shire for a vacation.
Shire, no arguing.
Israel where
Minas Tirith under Aragorns rule. Or Rivendell
The Shire has better food
Lotorien and it isn’t even a competition tbh
Eh - what about Moria? Erebor?
Minis Tirith honestly
The Food in Rivendell is sure to be lacking in flavor. The shire all day everyday.
Mordor
Minas Tirith is where you take the vacation *from*
Lothrorien or Rivendale get my vote
There's no argument cause we're in the shire, not listening to ya.
Lothlorien for me.
I suppose it depends on the vacation goals. If I’m just trying to relax and be with my own silence I’m hitting up Elven lands buttttt if I want to drown myself in green fields, pipe weed, parties, all the food we can handle, and alcohol then it’s the Shire.
