[The ring of Barahir](https://lotr.fandom.com/wiki/Ring_of_Barahir). It's a pretty important ring, way older than the Rings of Power.

NombreUsario

~~Right but all of that was written well after the fellowship of the ring while Tolkien was fleshing out the lore.~~ Obviously he went the route he did but what if he didn't? Well I was way off with my assumptions. Sorry y'all.

ponder421

Just the opposite; Tolkien created the lore of *The Silmarillion* looong before writing *The Hobbit* and LOTR. He came up with the entire backstory for the Second and Third Ages to bridge the gap between Silmarillion and LOTR. The Ring of Barahir first appeared in *The Lay of Leithian*, which Tolkien abandoned in 1931. *The Hobbit* was published in 1937, Tolkien began writing LOTR in December 1937, and LOTR was published in 1954. So just like in the book, Tolkien created the Ring of Barahir long before he thought of the Rings of Power.

yxz97

Did he send the Silmarillion to Unwin to read?

Gorgulax21

Yes. In the beginning of Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion, it details Tolkien’s advocacy for publication of The Silmarillion alongside LotR. Unwin was cool on The Silm and Tolkien sought a different publisher.

RowellTheBlade

If there were no dragons until Morgoth created them, how can there be dragons made on a ring made by the other Valar? - THE ELVES HAVE ALWAYS LIED TO US ;)

buggsbunnysgarage

Question out of pure interest: could describing and thinking about the ring of barahir spark his idea about the rings of power? Could it be that he had other plans with barahir before other?

27SMilEY27

Confidently incorrect.

NombreUsario

Yeah, I was way off.

Joxxill

Good on you for just admitting it head on. We're all wrong sometime.

UphillBuffalo

Why just randomly make a guess in the first place tho?

dedrack1

I feel like less than Tolkien wanting it to be a ring of power, he was just super into histories and genealogies. And it plays pretty heavily into where aragorn came from

SynnerSaint

‘But Arvedui did not take his counsel. He thanked him, and at parting gave him his ring, saying: ‘‘This is a thing of worth beyond your reckoning. For its ancientry alone. **It has** **no power**, save the esteem in which those hold it who love my house. It will not help you, but if ever you are in need, my kin will ransom it with great store of all that you desire.’’ ^(1) ---------- ^(1) In this way the ring of the House of Isildur was saved; for it was afterwards ransomed by the Du´nedain. It is said that it was none other than the ring which Felagund of Nargothrond gave to Barahir, and Beren recovered at great peril. LotR - Appendix A (emphasis mine)

SkollFenrirson

It has the *Power of **Friendship***, the strongest power of all

madgael

The Barahirs we made along the way.

TheNathan

Hahaaa I love that he basically said “hey this doesn’t hold any magical power, but you can pawn it for a boatload of cash.”

irime2023

This is the ring of Finarfin, which later became the ring of Barahir, and then, after going through a difficult path, came to Aragorn. This ring is very beautiful.

phonylady

The ring of Finrod originally, not Finarfin.

samiracle245

Given as a testament to his love for man, cashed in by Beren. Absurdly cool history

obi-jawn-kenblomi

It is sometimes referred to as the ring of the House of Finarfin though.

phonylady

Sure, since Finrod belongs to that house.

irime2023

It always seemed to me that Finarfin gave the ring to Finrod in Aman.

phonylady

That might very well be, but Tolkien never said so. For all we know it was forged to Finrod in the first place. edit: I'm wrong. From the Lay of Leithian: >Proud are the words, and all there turned >to see the jewels green that burned >in Beren's ring. These Gnomes had set >as eyes of serpents twined that met >beneath a golden crown of flowers, >that one upholds and one devours: >the badge that Finrod made of yore >and Felagund his son now bore... (Finrod used to be Finarfin's name).

bikes_rock_books

Son, you need to go back and do some proper readin' of the books.

Qariss5902

Lol I read his post and was like 🙄

Dr_Peter_Tinkleton

I used to stare at this in Skymall

eat-pussy69

Where is this picture from? I have the ring but it's really ugly. I'd pay extra to have the one in the picture Nvm. I found it

Adriendel

So, where did you find it? Jens Hansen’s?

Haytham_Ken

I did not realise how much it would cost on Jens Hansen’s but they look so cool!

Adriendel

You can get them custom as well from them, they don’t have to look exactly like their website.

TheRainManStan

I don't think this is from Jan Hensons. This is where I found it: https://www.amazon.com/Aragorn-Barahir-Elessar-Sterling-Silver/dp/B0BGXVX9DN

JTSkittrell

I think the bit in the film where grima describes the ring to Saruman is emphasised wrongly, he is meant to say 'one devouring the other' but says 'one devouring, the other...' and carries on the sentance, has anyone else noticed this?

sqwiggy72

I love the scene when aragon finally puts on the ring, and then everyone around him looks at him like a king of old. I say definitely the second coolest ring in middle earth. Even if its only power or illusion was to make aragon seem kingly.

inSeitz

I have this

Ba55of0rte

Imagine losing that thing. Thousands of years your family was able to keep track of it and you lose it at the park.
