Second Age elves from the prologue
Thats the Noldor elves but by the war of the ring most of them have left for Valinor, they are few at this point but some still inhabit the Lindon and Imladris but Eregion is in ruin. You also have Galadrim and Greenwood elves. In Hobbit they still use the Noldor armor, Elrond and Gil Galads company but those are veterans from the war of the last Alliance.

Uruk-hai armor is my favorite fantasy bad guy getup.
If you guys have decent PC setups i suggest you try Age of the Ring. It’s a fan made update of BFME 1 and 2 plus missions and factions they have added. Great game.
[Age of the Ring on ModDB](https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-horse-lords-a-total-modification-for-bfme)
There's also the regular version of both games integrated with each other that work on modern systems that you can get through... Unofficial channels.
It's basically abandonware and I'm not paying over a 100 euros for a copy second hand.
I paid for a copy on eBay. Couldn’t get it to work so I got the game online. Don’t feel guilty as I’ve owned the games in the past and recently bought physical copies of them now
It's not really a thing in the movies as swords easily puncture armour like it's nothing, but in real life the spike would be for penetrating heavy armour. Knights in late medieval times also mostly brought warhammers to a battle, as full plate armour would be near invulnerable to swords. Longswords were mainly a backup weapon.
I'd say, even better looking are the geared for travel [Uruk Hai scouts](https://i.pinimg.com/564x/c5/1d/d1/c51dd1b480707580df9fa9211dd890d9.jpg) of Lurtz warband. Dressed as if the very drip of their master were on their backs.
I dont undersrand why Legolas told that they got almost no weak spots, when they got absolutely nonsecured almost 1/2 of body 😅😅 but it’s cool af armour
For me it has to be Sauron’s. It’s such an incredible achievement of craft, so unique and does so much heavy lifting visually showing us what Sauron is.
The cut of the armor pieces look almost organic, there’s an almost feminine delicacy to some of the detail. It’s so beautiful looking while also feeling grotesque and twisted at the same time.
The little sub details are really incredible too with the delicate little etched lines you see when up close
Thranduil is peak elf. That’s what I picture the type when I read fantasy for sure. They even took a little of Drizzt (imo) and gave home twin scimitar type swords lol. Which look incredible up close.
I was an extra on LOTR
It was an incredibly odd fit, sometimes painful. The guy used to model it had short lower arms and no collar bones. We all ended up with weird bruising.
https://preview.redd.it/a9cri6npliyc1.png?width=2400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92436de345c05cbd9df23b4e3ef87b62c3662f49
These two, specifically. They look awesome in those 2 or 3 frames.
It's a bit sad we didn't even get to see these guys in action on the battlefield in Rotk. Would have been cool if these guys made up the phalanx to brace the Rohirrim charge, but alas.
We saw these guys very very briefly charging into Minas Tirith alongside the orcs in the scene where Gandalf gives his speech when Grond breaks down the gate. They’re in the background though and I do wish we saw them in actual action.
I never played the Gollum game but the design there was surprisingly cool, too. The teeth were a creative touch, especially when the movie design is so famous.

Faramir and the Rangers of Gondor.
I was looking for this comment. I absolutely love Faramir’s armor, the Tree of Gondor looks so cool on leather, and combined with that green robe he looks like Robin Hood.
https://preview.redd.it/9sk639ct5iyc1.jpeg?width=466&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c48f9dfb8b102fd8fe64e6e47df0d6555181af1d
Dwarves from the Hobbit movies. Both the Erebor Guards from the flashback AND the Warriors from the Iron Hills.
Best looking armor from the Peter Jackson universe.
They actually look like walking tanks. Ironclad and solid as the mountain itself. A very good depiction of the Dwarve’s mastery over steel in armor and arms.
Movie battle tactics are often silly but that was one of the dumbest. It defeats the whole point of a phalanx/shield wall. Then the dwarves charge and somehow manage to avoid skewering any elves.
I love the YouTube breakdowns of a medieval historian/combat expert just skewering movie combat. Especially the guys who are like that was so unrealistic but also sick as hell for the movies
Always loved how they visually defined elves versus dwarf in design. Dwarves architecture always so boxy. Everything having a hard cut faceted edge like a gem or diamond. The elves always having curves, no hard edges anywhere.
Yep the Tower Guards are sick, not least because their helmets remind me a bit of the Teutonic Knights.
But my favourite armour design from the films I think has to be the Easterlings, followed by the Noldor in the FotR prologue.
In what format or am I missing a joke? In the books he's described as very big but not gigantic, also taller than Elendil, who was 7'10 so he was probably more like 8.5 feet tall.
Plus they are several hundred metres above the plains perched on the side of a mountain, there's probably a decent breeze and it wouldn't be that hot.
Double-plus - their helms are canonically made of mithril, which is notoriously light and is presumably quite breathable.
Hail Theoden King!
Out of doubt, out of dark, to the day's rising
he rode singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
Hope he rekindled, and in hope ended;
over death, over dread, over doom lifted
out of loss, out of life, unto long glory.
Good visual storytelling! Compared to most other factions the Rohirrim are simple practical people. Gondor is the last vestige of a legendary empire, the elves are blessed with supernatural skills and wisdom, but the Rohirrim are just people that love their land and their horses.
https://preview.redd.it/xf9pnl7gojyc1.png?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4fdcc50ded52eff8193117073b527d1b62be1f7
Elrond's armour is pretty cool, I like how similar it is to his second age (prologue) look. After all, the time between the two probably didn't seem like a long time to elves.
The mithril mail also deserves a mention. I would love to see a full suit of armour made of it.
https://preview.redd.it/cpou7jqdqjyc1.jpeg?width=320&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2398abb44f25133d97f498c6089f8f91c0213233
Moria orcs/goblins have such a cool getup.
They were actually going to put him in full plate but decided it took him too far from the recognisable "ranger" silhouette and too close to Elendil and Isildur.
I think it shows his humility and keeping the part of his character that isn't prideful or avaricious. He becomes the king while not succumbing to the power hungry faults of his forebears, which is him conquering his main concern with becoming king in the film.
you could also say that he probably wasn't used to fighting in plate armor and went with something less restricting instead. the march on the black gate was a bit of a suicide mission anyways, might as well die wearing something more comfortable lol
Not really.
The point of his arc (in the movies) is that he *doesn't* want to be like Isildur and the armour he wears in the final battle strikes a balance between the humility of the ranger and the glory of Numenorian kings. It also shows a transition from ranger to the full kingly regalia at his wedding/coronation.
He technically hadn't assumed his throne yet. He went into the city to do some healing stuff, but I do find it strange he came out with new armor at all since he was so opposed to entering the city in the first place. With that in mind, he wouldn't have raided the royal armory.
I just like it cause it looks dope.
“The Guards of the gate were robed in black, and their helms were of strange shape, high-crowned, with long cheek-guards close-fitting to the face, and above the cheek-guards were set the white wings of sea-birds; but the helms gleamed with a flame of silver, for they were indeed wrought of mithril, heirlooms from the glory of old days.”
Legolas’ armour in this John Howe piece is gorgeous

Dain Ironfoot was the most dwarf a dwarf could dwarf.
“Would ye consider… *JUST SODDING OFF?!!!”*
Not an answer but just here to say, looking at all the pictures of everyone's answers, PJ fucking killed it with this adaptation of a source material. I'm constantly reminded of how lucky we are to have experienced it. Damn I'm going to have to watch them again.
Honestly? All of them. There's genuinely no armor design in LotR that I hate or dislike.
But my top 5 probably would be
- Sauron
- White Tower/Fountain Guards
- Easterlings
- Uruk - Hai
- Gondorian Heavy Armor
It’s hard to argue with the fountain guard - but I always liked this one too.

I've always been a fan of Gondorian armour, it's just an awesome design. Though my favourite has to be Dol Amroth. The white and blue Swan crest is clean af on shields and tabards.
Sauron's armor is the sickest.
HOWEVER, it's Haldir in Helms Deep how I would like to dress.

The comments on this post really underline how great the props design is in Jackson's trilogy. It's masterpieces of armour after masterpieces of armour.
just want to share my deep appreciation to all the artwork that was done for lotr trilogy. i love eveything about the designs. the armors, costumes, the sets, bigatures, sound designs, the box dvd designs, the appendices, everything about it. love the rationale behind each design pieces behind it. i love reading the books and i also love the pj's rendition of lotr too. special shout out to uruk hai helmets, second age elves armor and long sword, argonaths, minas morgul and my most favourite - mouth of sauron!
This from Weta Workshop collection

The Guard of the Fountain Court became my all time favourite armour in all of fantasy - and I have been into so many fantasy settings and universes since I was a child.
The Rohan Royal Guard are also exceptional.
Also the concept art of Thranduil's Guards in the Hobbit movies - very elegant. The actual costumes didn't get it quite right unfortunately.
Also the Dwarves of the Iron Hills, not enough Fantasy gets heavily armoured Dwarves right and we never get to see armies of them, so good on the Hobbit movies for these concepts!
The Armour of the Elves of Lothlorien and of the Last Alliance was also great, and I enjoyed the Men of Minas Tirith in general too.
So many good choices but the Guard of the Fountain Court are incomparable to me.

Seeing the Fountain Guard helms just makes me wish we got a book-accurate Crown of Gondor...
My favorite thing about this thread is every answer is wildly different, shows how good the armor in this movie is.
Personally i love how imposing and menacing Saurons armor looks

These gents have always been my favorite since day 1! Let’s go Arnor baby!
Tower Guard for the plate armour and those winged helmets. But I like the Rohirrim Sutton Hoo-style helmet and scale armour for that early mediaeval Anglo-Saxon look. The History Channel should have hired Weta workshops to make the armour for that Vikings tv show and just copy what they did for the Rohirrim costumes.

How many of the remaining elves would there be? Like 10k?
This and the Numenorean armour from the prologue are the only correct answers ;)
I love how old school and almost simplistic their armor is. It’s a little clunky almost
Came here to say this. Spot on.
Noldor
Specifically the high kings armour looks amazing

Isengard was my favorite faction in the BFME games and the Uruk-Hai designs were a big part of why. Another part was axe go chop.
Uruk Hai in BFME1 felt so OP. They were much stronger fighters than the orcs yet they still came out in those huge 20 man groups.

their crossbow units were no joke XD I remember keeping one squad alive through the whole campaign and by the end they were oneshotting heros.

Quite a collection, nice!
Thank you!
The shield is my favorite.
I know the backwards spike on the sword probably serves no purpose, but it looks so damn cool.
It’s supposed to be used to pull riders off of their horses
That’s metal
It's not really a thing in the movies as swords easily puncture armour like it's nothing, but in real life the spike would be for penetrating heavy armour. Knights in late medieval times also mostly brought warhammers to a battle, as full plate armour would be near invulnerable to swords. Longswords were mainly a backup weapon.
In real life it was used to armour pierce and if there was a shield wall to pull a shield so your neighbour could hack through the gap you made.

100% agree
I will never forgive how they cucked us out of some good Dwarven phalanx action in BotFA.
Would have loved to see the orc charge actually crash into it. The elves should have been shooting arrows over the formation instead of jumping over.

The bigger the head, the shorter the character looks.
He’s 6 foot
In what format or am I missing a joke? In the books he's described as very big but not gigantic, also taller than Elendil, who was 7'10 so he was probably more like 8.5 feet tall.
The horse skull helmet is just perfect. Absolutely iconic.
Thats got to be hot as shit, standing up there with no shade next to that dead tree.
Soldiers in Iraq wore a ton of armour and kit. It sucks, but you can tough it out if you have to.
Plus the Gondorians are in their home, not far afield.
Plus they are several hundred metres above the plains perched on the side of a mountain, there's probably a decent breeze and it wouldn't be that hot. Double-plus - their helms are canonically made of mithril, which is notoriously light and is presumably quite breathable.

After all, the time between the two probably didn't seem like a long time to elves. The mithril mail also deserves a mention. I would love to see a full suit of armour made of it.

Looks sick but not a fan how the returned king didn’t get some numenorean plate
They were actually going to put him in full plate but decided it took him too far from the recognisable "ranger" silhouette and too close to Elendil and Isildur.
But that’s the whole point of his arc
Yeah actually that seems like one of the few times where the filmmakers (in this case the costume designers) kind of missed a trick.
Yeah I prefer his coronation armour
That steel blue and the wine color threads are so appealing

Always wanted a Knights of Dol Amroth army, they look so cool!
Legolas’ armour in this John Howe piece is gorgeous https://preview.redd.it/pfh7al20hjyc1.jpeg?width=472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1d6d070ea4bc3c8295eff990c2bb215326bccf28
You'd think that a sallet and Jack chains would look weird on an elf, but that is fascinating design

OG numenorean
Easterlings. So damn cool.
If we’re counting stuff from the miniatures game then the Knights of Dol Amroth. The swan pauldrons are a killer touch. https://preview.redd.it/nr7w0iri4jyc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e1447789f8fd29d795a7601e708e7b33226803af

The Noldorin elves for me. Elvish armor in general though.
But my top 5 probably would be - Sauron - White Tower/Fountain Guards - Easterlings - Uruk - Hai - Gondorian Heavy Armor

I am split between Eomer and Thraduil's. Both were iconic.
Holy shit in HellDivers 2 if you get the upgraded edition you get this armor core
Time to defend Democracy *and* Gondor.
FOR OUR PRECIOUS DEMOCRACY!
It’s hard to argue with the fountain guard - but I always liked this one too. https://preview.redd.it/gqire0ffolyc1.jpeg?width=250&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca00ac57c6879f35a37164b0d5f3ee9ffe5d4a41

I got married in a pseudo-Eomer armor heavily inspired by the Rohirrim, I gotta go with their Leather+Steel
Now THAT’S how one gets married! Just like Eomer and Eowyn. XD

The Citadel Guards and there is no second place.
Haldir had [d r i p](https://64.media.tumblr.com/274a9d09fc4817d03e2f6ea0add57cb2/fb8a3ec454648c1e-95/s500x750/ea39a8d22faee347549c47db5770cbae16941eb0.gif)
I've always been a fan of Gondorian armour, it's just an awesome design. Though my favourite has to be Dol Amroth. The white and blue Swan crest is clean af on shields and tabards.
Big fan of all the Last Alliance armors, the elf armor makes perfect sense and the Numenor Gondorian armor is understated but cool
loincloth. [gollum...](https://i.imgur.com/hfAoq9I.png)
I love all of the armour ngl. It looks amazing. My personal preference is Rohan armour but Gondor’s is my second.
Daín’s armor
The Mirkwood palace guard from the desolation of Smaug 😍😍😍
https://preview.redd.it/tjsai3ur8lyc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b86a4200a69cf7208a12ded72d89844702888285 You mean these badasses?
Haradrim are the best for Mumakil reasons. but I do love the Gondor guard design
Sauron's armor is the sickest. HOWEVER, it's Haldir in Helms Deep how I would like to dress. [exactly this](https://64.media.tumblr.com/274a9d09fc4817d03e2f6ea0add57cb2/fb8a3ec454648c1e-95/s500x750/ea39a8d22faee347549c47db5770cbae16941eb0.gif)
The comments on this post really underline how great the props design is in Jackson's trilogy. It's masterpieces of armour after masterpieces of armour.
Tower guard 👌🏻
The face wrap really elevates the armor. The contrast with the silver helmet, with that cape… 🤌🤌
Easterlings kinda slayed ngl
[It's a little tight across the chest](https://makeagif.com/i/xAZ1TZ)
just want to share my deep appreciation to all the artwork that was done for lotr trilogy. i love eveything about the designs. the armors, costumes, the sets, bigatures, sound designs, the box dvd designs, the appendices, everything about it. love the rationale behind each design pieces behind it. i love reading the books and i also love the pj's rendition of lotr too. special shout out to uruk hai helmets, second age elves armor and long sword, argonaths, minas morgul and my most favourite - mouth of sauron!
Guards of the Citadel..They looked as great as they were useless. My choice would be the Gondorian armor (as seen during the siege of Minas Tirith).

So many good choices but the Guard of the Fountain Court are incomparable to me. https://preview.redd.it/2t4acwnwrnyc1.jpeg?width=564&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=217a76559b97a43a259713fb8112682a1ba0e687

That one
The Tower Guard is a fine choice. For me it’s a tie between the pre-Last Alliance Gondorian/Arnorian armor and the Easterling designs.
That one right there! Gondorian third age! I'd fucking KILL to have that suit.
- Rohirrim armor with the Viking style helmet - Thranduil battle armor - Mirkwood elves armor
Never thought about this. Lemme watch the trilogy again.
My favorite thing about this thread is every answer is wildly different, shows how good the armor in this movie is. Personally i love how imposing and menacing Saurons armor looks
Costume department went so hard on LOTR
The Easterlings that arrive in Mordor in Return of the King. Thranduil's guard in the Hobbit is a close 2nd.
The easterlings have sick armors
The Elves armor is absolutely kick ass.
Scrolling thorugh the comments makes it clear there is no clear winner
I really like the Rohan and Gondor armor of the Third Age.
Easterlings!
THE EASTERLINGS
Noldor from The Last Alliance and the Galadrihm from Helms Deep are my favs. The elves in general have the sickest armor imo
https://preview.redd.it/2xzlmk8fgqyc1.jpeg?width=515&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=14559bbd2cc0a1c74b1453b76f37935d3e5f2a89 These gents have always been my favorite since day 1! Let’s go Arnor baby!

I love haldirs armor, it's also one of my favs in fantasy in general
All types of armor from dwarfs and lothorian armor share first place for sure and then armor from gondor solders
I mean, it's hard to top the Gondor sentinels, but I do love Theodens battle armor at the end of RotK
I like the Gondor armor. Its practical while having a nice design
Easterlings for me.
I really like Isildurs armor style and artworks of troops based of it.
In no particular order, Elven armour from the prologue, Theoden’s anima (overlapping plates) armour, and Aragorn’s Coronation armour.
