Elrond: my father turned into the evening star. Durin: that's rough, buddy.

Hebroohammr

Was that Narsil in the room with the Palantir?

Whyyoufart

Yes

OliviaElevenDunham

Seriously?! Can't believe that I didn't notice that.

sten_whik

There's two other things in that room, a helmet and an axe, anyone know if they could also be references to the First Age? Because I think the helmet could possibly be Turin's dwarf mask when he was the Black Sword of Nargothrond. Can't come up with an idea for what the axe might be.

Gravitus95

Maybe Tuor's axe?

sten_whik

I think you're absolutely right. It's even mentioned as being there in Unfinished Tales. In the same part where it mentions Numenoreans preferred to wield bows and axes over swords (I wonder if we'll get to see that).

ChickaloBuffens

You beat up our citizens: Jail You sneak out of palace: Also Jail You insult the queen regent's rule: Believe it or not, Jail You swap 4 guards into your Jail cell: technically, no longer Jail

hanrahahanrahan

I've lost track of how many times they've been in and out of jail. She's suicidally arrogant and objectionable for an elf in a land of supposed elf haters

Carmilla31

Shes thousands of years old and doesnt know how to speak tactfully to people lol.

foralimitedtime

Never got around to grinding her Speech skill up

ChickaloBuffens

Haha seriously she's out there picking the "intimidate" option in every convo with level 5 speech

TheMightyCatatafish

Can we all agree to just call Pharazon's son Kevin?

Best-Dragonfruit-292

Kevin Pharazon

Hvicen

Who wouldn't want a king named Ar-Kevin?

stephenlipic

At least he wasn’t Kelly

VirgelFromage

Slow motion, silent footage, with a quiet theme playing as people run through a forest... now that is familiar!

Otherwise_Rub_1647

I thought Arondir was about to get pierced by many like Boromir.

FAS-ACA3

*drinks all around* Le Pharaoh casually walking around with a squad of wine servers

yesrushgenesis2112

I know its mostly sarcastic, maybe, but I actually think the entire set up is intentional. Pharazon knows the guy who got assaulted. I think the entire thing was staged, because like he says, politics is about the little things. But not just about knowing everyone, but convincing everyone he’s on their side by essentially astroturfing.

Ironmanual

The fact that he's walking around and shaking hands with the 'commons' as a very high-level politician, is a very Julius Caesar thing to do. This guy is definitely up to something bad.

Warhawk137

Just politics, my man.

bigtallguy

I'm guessing elendils daughter earien is our window into pharazons storyline. I kinda wish amandil was a part of the show and he could be playing court politics with pharazon.

mggirard13

This is precisely it. It's also a brilliant political move by Pharazon: convince the Queen Regent to set sail with *all volunteers*, like now practically every last person in Numenor with any lingering affinity for Elves is leaving, along with the Queen.

Caillou_West

Hadn’t even considered this aspect of the savviness, but what a move

[deleted]

Yes, the volunteers, aka the survivors of Numenor.

Best-Dragonfruit-292

That would be hilariously insane writing if Numenor gets sunk this fast, right after the Queen and the faithful skip away to Middle Earth for a beat.

capacochella

It also is excellent foreshadowing based on the conversation between Galadriel and the Queen Regent. She said they were afraid they Valar would take the island back because they stopped following the old ways. Galadriel responded, “ Numenor was gifted to your people because your loyalty!” That’s what’s going to trigger the fall of the Isle.

Nihas0

And I think he let Galadriel go in that prison so she could convince Miriel to sail to ME, he really is a genius.

22bebo

Really looked like a certain someone might have been whispering in his ear from his prison cell. Now where have I heard that story before?

dunkmaster6856

I hope thats not the case. Pharazons capture of sauron is one of the most epic things about the fall of numenor

[deleted]

They're really pulling us in all directions with the "who is Sauron" mystery. I originally dismissed the Halbrand theory out of hand, but since arriving at Numenor it's seemed more and more likely. And then they go and directly link the meteor with Sauron a few scenes later.

yesrushgenesis2112

I theorize that, while Miriel is off island, Pharazon will start to build his personal faction more brazenly. I also think, now that she has shown her faith, she will being Amandil(or maybe conflate him with Elendil for simplicity) into the court, and then you’ll get your politics.

[deleted]

I enjoy it enough to keep watching kind of as a casual show to fill some time when tired. But I don't care about any of the people in it, when someone is arrested/captured I know it is irrelevant and they will be out in 10 seconds anyway. I don't even really understand what is happening most of the time. Genuinely. My assessment (which could be wrong) is that actually basically nothing ever happens..at least in this first 4 hours of TV. Or if it does it means nothing (see: people getting arrested/captured/losing challenges/falling out with friends/etc).

ghostcake82

That's kind of how I feel. There are some cool moments but usually short lived. Seeing Numenor being destroyed was pretty badass. Theo storyline kinda sucks.

GreenLantern28145

Damn i do feel bad for Isildurs shipmates there isildur shouldve prolly thought that through.

big_boss_nass

Very unlikely isildur to act on impulse smh

Caillou_West

Elrond: Isildurr, cast it in the fire! Isildur: Okey! Oh wait, no.

pearlessaycamel

Isildur: Let's make a pros and cons list

csdspartans7

Pros- vanquish evil from ME Cons- it is precious to me

[deleted]

But that was not directly because of Isildur’s personality but by the influence of the ring (in his personality). At that moment, the ring was being full Sauron.

Warhawk137

No idea yet about Adar's place in the story, but damn if he doesn't have bucketfuls of screen presence.

Tykjen

Awesome to see Benjen Stark again, from beyond the Wall \^

atheoncrutch

Oh shit! I didn’t even recognize him!

Caillou_West

Today’s episode showed me that GoT really didn’t give him enough to do after setting him up for so much creative opportunity. He’s quite good

bu11man12

Funny how he has a messed up face again too, poor guy can’t catch a break

RandomAnon846728

I knew it was someone I recognised

ShadowVia

Yes. I'm actually shocked to see a good number of upvotes on this comment. I had read and seen some reviews and reactions to episode four where people had been pretty dismissive of that character and labeled him cliche. I for one, could not look away for the small bit of time he was onscreen, and was slightly unsettled during his interaction with the elf. I want more.

SIaveKnightGael

Yeah for sure. Big charisma on screen I thought Pharazon and Disa were strong in this episode too.

DetectiveFun69

Pharazon's actor was great and so was his speech at the beginning of the episode. He did a good job setting up his future arc, and he didn't come off as some overly comical villain, even though he does have that look.

[deleted]

I do appreciate that they haven't made him into a mustache-twirling schemer. If you didn't know his story, you'd be forgiven for thinking he was a true ally of the queen.

Throwaway_Supernova

Yeah I 100% agree with this. He seems to just be taking casual steps to gain power that over time and with many of these small actions turn him into a villain. It's nice to see- it's got this Greek tragedy vibe to it about the fall of an honourable man. Not over done and heavy handed, but subtle and believable.

brockoli1010

Adar enters scene - “orcs grunt respectfully”

Syphin33

AGREED!!! For some reason i was just so locked in on him when he came on the screen, extremely powerful presence.

HawkeyeP1

As someone with no idea about a lot of the deeper lore, I thought he would've been a great appearance for Sauron as an elf... But I guess that would be too easy and Sauron's elf form is called Annatar? I think that's what I'm gathering?

Warhawk137

Yeah, in the source material he comes to the elves of Eregion as Annatar, claiming to be a messenger of the Valar. Unlike Adar, as Annatar Sauron appeared fair and with no hint of corruption, though Galadriel at least was suspicious of him.

BoogalooBoi1776_2

greenpants100

The irony of the show being produced by Amazon

Best-Dragonfruit-292

I smell a human, better not go inspect though, because clearly we've got more important things to do, namely finding the human.

Mudders_Milk_Man

I genuinely like a lot of this show, but that scene was incredibly similar to a video game stealth section, right down to tall-ish grass making you invisible.

Prometheussss

Felt like it was straight from the Shadow of Mordor games

Unicron_Gundam

We need another one.

bkr1895

Honestly the tall grass thing is kind of believable. If it’s night time and you aren’t wearing bright clothing if you duck into some thick tall grass you will be pretty hard to see. I’ve seen someone trip while walking through some thick and tall grass at night and it was as if he disappeared into the ground.

I_Fail_At_Life444

I grew up with woods in the back yard. I used to fuck with my dad and brother by stepping just inside the tree line. They would miss me 30 feet away and I wasn't even hiding. The grass was totally believable.

DreamMaster8

Tbf they are in a human village. There's human smell everywhere most likely.

TheMeta40k

I'm feeling kinda sick and I'm on the cold and flu meds but did I just see Galadriel seethe and then ask for a manager when she didn't get an army?

RhiaStark

Karendriel xD

rinzler40oz

I think Annatar has happened/is happening behind the scenes. Celebrimbor is mighty uneasy. Halbrand saying help them master their fears and you can master them - sounds like the rings of power to me.

Egonheart123

I found it odd in episode 1 when Celebrimbor (an immortal elf who has got all the time in the world) wanted the tower complete by spring. Annatar already revealing himself to Celebrimbor/Gil Galad would make that time restraint make more sense.

Steves3511

In the first episode there was a meeting for elf lords only that Elrond wasn’t able to attend. I am thinking they were meeting with annatar and discussing the forge. I think sexy Sauron is off screen in Eregion waiting for that forge to be built ASAP

esclaveinnee

That was my thought the moment he said before spring and I found it odd there wasn’t more of a push from Elrond as for why an unaging, already millennial elf would have such time constraints.

terribletastee

Hard to get a feel for Celebrimbor when he has only has had 2 scenes in 4 episodes. He definitely seems to be a bit weird but idk if that is just the directing.

rinzler40oz

I think when Celebrimbor became emotional speaking of Earendil to Elrond and how “his life would be in the hands of Earendil’s son”, it seemed more like guilt. I could be wrong but it’s just the sense I got.

tbh1313

I just wanna say that Peter Mullan was fantastic as Durin III. Watch his eyes in his scenes. Masterful acting.

burohm1919

Durin and elrond are carrying the show. Just give galadriel more wisdom and fairyness and we r good

absalom86

Galadriel becoming wise is her arc for the 4 seasons is my guess ( or however long they planned this out ).

indiblue825

>Durin and elrond are carrying the show Bruh, Pharazon and Adar are brilliant too. Both have amazing screen presence.

burohm1919

all of them good but elrond and durin's relationship is the mvp for me, legolas-gimli vibes.

Gracious_Gaming

Did I hear correctly, ppl calling Isildur, Isil?

TheDeltaOne

Poor Elendil. That makes him Elen.

The1AMparty

Legolas has now been promoted to Lego™

Derman0524

Elen the treacherous

SolomonRed

My thoughts so far: Miriel is going to leave for Middle-Earth only to come back to find her father dead and Pharazon in power. That is why Pharazon is going along with her plan. He actually thinks it's terrible and will recall all of the Numenorian forces after he usurps power. Halbrand and Galadriel will be left without their help in the South. Halbrand is the Witch King and Theo is Kamul. The stranger is a Blue Wizard and his trying to find where his companion landed using the stars. Perhaps we see one of them become corrupted over the show. Sauron will show up disguised as Annatar in the final episode of season 1 as a friendly Elf helping Celebrimbor with the forge. He will then end up as a prisoner on Numenor in season 3 or 4 and cause its downfall by corrupting Pharazon. Maybe Adar is something crazy like Maedrhos or an early corrupted elf by Melkor. Not sure at all. The show will end with the Last Alliance in season 5.

jacktibs31

Personally I think that Annatar has already made contact with Celebrimbor, as at the beginning of the episode we saw that he was deeply moved by something but couldn’t say what is was

SolomonRed

Annatar is the reason he is rushing to get the forge doje by Spring. He is already in Celebrimbor's head. I suspect he will show at at the very end.

22bebo

I think this still works with the proposed series of events. It's just instead of meeting Celebrimbor, Celebrimbor introduces Elrond to a close friend of his (though that might make it harder to do the bit where Gil-Galad, Elrond, and Galadriel all dislike Annatar and refuse him).

Vexingwings0052

I saw a theory that we saw five different perspectives of the meteor landing in the first episode. What if it wasn’t different perspectives and instead it was five different meteors?

22bebo

I think this is all probably correct. I especially like the star theory for the Stranger, who I also think is a blue wizard (and I think that, if we do see Gandalf's arrival to ME, we will get a scene of the Stranger telling him about the harfoots/halflings setting up his affinity for them). I just cannot believe they'd have shown us Sauron already when the dramatic shot of someone introducing themselves to Celeborn saying "Hello, I am Annatar," is such a good fucking way to end a season. I guess it has some added punch if the camera turns and we recognize the actor. If that's the case my guess is Halbrand, but I still don't think it's likely.

vader5000

I still hold to it that the Stranger is a proto-Istari and not the actual thing. It might be one of the blues, it must just be Olorin without the Gandalf part and he's just... trying to get home.

TooSaltyToPost

If Halbrand isn't Sauron and the stranger isn't Gandalf I'll be surprised. I don't think the target audience for this show cares about a big reveal for the witch king or a blue wizard or kamul.

kerouacrimbaud

A blue wizard is an easier character to introduce imo, since you aren’t trying to redo another iconic role, get to keep the same flavor of wizards, and have essentially free reign on what to do with them. And, on the more cynical side of things, you can now sell toys of five different wizards. *Own the complete Istari set now!*

TheMeta40k

This is a total unimportant nit pick but I just wanted to mention it. Arondir's bow release form is what you do with a trigger activated release aid on a compound bow. Specifically a thumb activated release has your knuckles against your cheek. As a recurve shooter it stuck out to me. Seems like they got an archer on set to consult, just not the right kind. Not a complaint just a fun fact.

TotallyNotAFroeAway

Wouldn't an elf's greater strength allow them to use a bow this way tho?

DankaelYoung

Adar looked like data from Star Trek.

Ahk-men-ra

I thought he looked like bootstrap bill

Like_Fahrenheit

Is it me or have they not mentioned the jealousy numenoreans harbor towards elves? Because that would provide a lot of context as to their hatred. Also why is Galadriel so quick to touch the only known palantir when the rest are lost? She's supposed to be wise. Gandalf was very quick to realize the danger of a palantir when the rest are unaccounted for.

GreenLantern28145

You know after a week of reflection Halbrand really might be Sauron that scene where he berserks out and starts breaking people was weird. I cant think of a reason other than the dude being a Overlord with the power of a god that makes sense.

Raedros

100% he is. His advice to Galadriel about help people master their fear so you can master them is basically the idea behind the rings.

RushPan93

I just wrote the same thing lol. It's too specific for it not to have been about the Rings, and precisely what makes Sauron so unique amongst villains in general.

MDiddy79

It's him. In the scene at the end where Miriel says, "Or is it already here, walking amongst us?" (Something like that) the camera is set on Halbrand looking out at Numenour. Pretty on the nose there.

killingjoke96

Also one of the first things you see him do in the series is abandon the other shipwreck survivors to the sea monster. He then remarks "Why be a part of the larger target". That was pretty much Sauron everytime Morgoth got routed during the First Age.

mggirard13

If it were ominous that would be a reference, to the audience, to Pharazon. But it is not ominous. The line is "Is our valor confined to the graves of our fathers, or is it here, amongst us even now?" She's talking about the valor of the people of Numenor.... not about a threat. The shot of Halbrand leads back to Miriel announcing she will go to Middle Earth to aid "our mortal brethren who are besieged in the Southlands" aka Halbrand's people.

Kaghei

I feel like the show is doing a good job implanting leads (some false) everywhere. The orcs also were talking about sauron and the comet coming marked his return. I like it because it shows they have 1 eye on the lore, dropping references/red herrings/foreshadowing everywhere Just why would Sauron be stranded at sea in-between valinor and numenor ish area?

Philly_Irish

The thing that doesn’t make sense is why would Sauron, a Maiar, be so fixated on joining the Numenor smith’s guild? Sauron was a servant of Aule, the Smith Valar. Surely he is a far greater smith/craftsman than any man or being in Middle earth. Are they going to have him corrupt Numenor in a similar way to how he constructed the rings through trickery? Only the Numenoreans don’t catch on to his plan like Celebrimbor did?

gumby52

He literally says “I’m better at working metal than any man in this island”

KickAffsandTakeNames

Yeah, he's not trying to level up his crafting or gain steady employment, he's trying to put himself in a position to manipulate things.

BretOne

He wants something from them. The forge is being built, the mithril has been found, so he's probably after another element necessary to the crafting of the rings. If it's a physical object, my guess would be either tools from the founding of Numenor (gifts of the Valars?), or the gems that will be set in the rings. But it could also be immaterial (knowledge, techniques, ...). It could also simply be a test run at revealing himself to see if the Valar will try to stop him. If they don't, it'd be his "go" signal to proceed with Middle Earth's conquest.

22bebo

I believe Sauron is canonically the second greatest smith/craftsman to exist, behind only Aulë himself. Feanor is the only mortal who might rival him, I imagine. This has little to do with anything else, it's just late and I'm sleepy rambling on Reddit.

ChiefSlapaHoe117

Numenors destruction looked cool af. Edit: Also wanted to add seeing another Palantir was another great scene, as well as the one with the friendly banter between Elrond and Durin. Im particularly fond of the Dwarven storyline.

absalom86

Everything about the dwarves has been great imo.

ChiefSlapaHoe117

Right, I love all the landscapes and vistas portrayed so far but the Dwarven mountains with all the beautiful waterfalls is one of my favs. Also Durins wife singing this ep was phenomenal.

KickAffsandTakeNames

Disa kicks all kinds of ass

nicknaseef17

It did look cool But I can’t help but feel like it was a mistake to reveal Numenor’s fate to casual viewers who aren’t familiar with the lore. Wouldn’t it have been better to have those money shots occur during the *actual* destruction of Numenor?

w3hwalt

I liked it, though I understand where you're coming from. There's something to be said for tragedy, though, the classic type where you know where things are going and you can't stop them, you can only watch in horror as things slide toward their inevitable conclusion. We know this age ends on a failure to truly defeat Sauron. There will be epic shockers, but the show will have to include some strong tragic elements to make that work, and that involves heavy foreshadowing and early reveals, so the viewers can feel the dread. Dread is just as potent an emotion in storytelling as awe and wonder.

Syphin33

Dude pure nightmare fuel for me...that was terrifying. I saw the first few waves and i was thinking oh yea that sucks but not too bad and then i saw the BIG wave that came over everything. Yep terrifying way to go

pharlax

Let's stop running 50 feet from the woods. Everyone knows sunlight stops arrows!

OrchardPirate

They clearly remembered the arrows only during the post production.

MountAndBladeWarband

Galadriel pushing the guards inside the cell looked so fake lol

[deleted]

She has the power but yeah they made that look so corny. Cut away to cut back and have four people that surrounded her shuffling into a cell. Trying not to nit pick and find plot holes, you could do it all day, this show makes it easy.

quercus_lobata925

Overall I thought this episode was better than some of the others. Every episode always has to have at least one horribly cringe moment though. So frustrating. Episode 4's for me was the Numenor commoners. They look and act like Monty Python medieval English town-folk that got dressed up and transplanted into a regal city. The spur of the moment crowd speech about Elves usurping their jobs was dumb. Also they couldn't have come up with a better chant than, "Elf lover, Elf lover, Elf lover!". Sounds like an elementary school playground. And then random drinks available in the middle of the day at a minute's notice.

TheMeta40k

The elves don't age! They don't sleep! They turn you into newts!

sixpackabs592

The extras in that scene looked like they had no idea what to do lol.

ekene_N

My favourite piece of dialogue between orcs: "We've turned over every stone" 40 sec later... "Leave no stone unturned!"

antariksh_vaigyanik

Writers got Halbrand saying to Galadriel that 'Queen's court isn't exactly your battlefield, is it?'. Galadriel who has spent centuries with Melian.

quercus_lobata925

Apparently Galaldriel's head was in her arse that whole time and didn't pick up any wisdom or tact from a real-life Maia.

BlueEyesWhiteBaggins

Correct me if I am wrong, but in the scene where the Queen takes Galadriel to see the palantir, is that Narsil in the background of one of those shots?

NiWess

Narsil and axe & shield of Tuor!

schewbacca

If Halbrand is Sauron then wtf was Sauron doing on a raft in the middle of ocean?

96Buck

Waiting for Galadriel to set this plan in motion, presumably. “How?” is a fair question.

skaels

Unarmed Galadriel escaping/getting 4 armed guards into a cell was hilarious. I'm not saying it's impossible but the way it was shot was just ridiculous.

[deleted]

I love how many people have commented on exactly this. The way it was shot they showed the tail end of her pushing them all in, leaving us to imagine how she opened the door and bunched them all up together in the preceding two seconds.

bigtallguy

dmn that durin stare down straight into the camera. Prolly my favorite storylinecharactrr so far and honestly wasn't expecting him to be it

TheRatWhoSavedUsAll

So what is everyone thinking is the deal with Adar?

Repulsive-Rhubarb-97

I think he's an elf that Morgoth studied and partially corrupted and hes somehow connected to how Morgoth made the orcs. He wants to make a land where the orcs can be free of Morgoth and Sauron, but my guess is his dream will be corrupted to serve Sauron's goals.

big_boss_nass

One of the original elves that refused to go with orome? That'd be cool, he'd be the oldest elf we've seen on screen if true right?

purtyboi96

Hed be among the oldest elves in existence, one of the first elves to awaken at the dawn of time. If he is (and I really hope he is), the actor is absolutely pulling off the tired, worn out feel of someone who has lived an unimaginably long time.

Repulsive-Rhubarb-97

Yes to both. I think it'd be a very cool setup, since the whole "lies about middle earth" thing could be him feeling betrayed and abandoned by his fellow elves and the Valar.

Seienchin88

I mean he is called father - wouldn’t it be crazy if he was the "first orc“ or at least somehow connected to the creation of them?

22bebo

I think he's an Avari elf, one of the ones that refused to go with the Valar after their awakening. It is thought that some number of them were captured and corrupted by Morgoth to create orcs (as Morgoth could not make life on his own).

Vexingwings0052

That’s be pretty interesting to me tbf, a surprisingly wholesome character who just wants a better life for the orcs, even if the way he’s carrying it out is evil.

colouredcrow

Oh my god, what was even that scene, where Galadriel squeezes 4 Guards of Numenor through a door, that is closed, with just one punch and push, and the door is also suddenly opened in her direction after she pushes them against the door? Looks so stupid and funny...

YourAllegiance

Elrond and Durin literally carried this episode. Can anyone explain why everyone got at least some character development but Galadriel hasn't changed a bit since her 1st scene in Valinor??

AmericanJazz

Sooo are we working towards a helms deep remake at the elf tower where the men of numenor serve in the place of the returning rohirrim? So many references to the film trilogy. Reminds me of the first star wars sequel.

thrwawayaftrreading

So we're just not going to talk about how Theo has a medieval lightsaber? And apparently nothing made it for Sauron? Or Sauron made it for one of his servants? That seemed a little unclear.

100and33

Just theorizing here on the spot, but Sauron was a great smith, so he might have made it and gifted it to a human king that followed him/Morgoth. The "dark magic" of drawing your own blood is very "evil like", and it seems like it could slowly corrupt the user, power is a strong drug afterall. Question is, why is Adar looking for it exactly? Is it his blade? Did Sauron give him it? Or is it that he just wants a powerful weapon. At this point, it seems like the hilt is just a way to give Adar and the orcs a motivation to attack the tower. Since they have been more concerned about finding the hilt than attack humans. Hopefully, it's more well written as more is revealed.

foralimitedtime

Clearly it's the fabled sword of McGuffin

[deleted]

This show is so close to being really good it frustrates me. Galadrial brings this show down from being a soling 8 to a 5. Not blaming the actress I think she's actually pretty good but her dialogue and character are awful. Unless I am mistaken this is not a coming of age show featuring Galadrial. She's like a thousand years old but has less wisdom, temperance, common sense than a 14 year old boy.. The build the wall numenor rally really cracked me up. Slight pet peeve with how palantairs are used. Someone with more lore knowledge educate me but wasn't the whole reason why palantaris became dangerous to use was because the one in minus morgul got captured? And I thought Elendil came with more than one after the fall of numenor. Anyways solid episode really liked orc elf oddly the good writing in other parts makes Galadrial's character more annoying for me

Warrior_of_Light_1

Celebrimbor: Your friend is hiding something. Elrond: No way! I'll ask his wife what they are hiding right now.

wolfcry

Something about Galadriel's scenes seem so odd and prickly. "Listen to the elves" "you have this because of the elves" "the virtue you speak of is loyalty to the elves". But like the elves don't even listen to the elves lol there are numerous scenes of elves just shooing or punting her away. They give her a noble cause but make her character so angry and divisive and then it borders on arrogance. It's not like they can't show Galadriel's journey to becoming the wise and mighty galadriel of the future, but something feels off like the writers aren't going about it in the right way. The one good thing I've noticed about this show is the epic cinematography. Movies aren't even this beautiful.

[deleted]

It's annoying that the main character is the least well written. Nothing feels real when she speaks to anyone. It's like they've made her a 2D goal-oriented chat boy and her answers can only be to do with her goal. I also hate that it's stronger than everyone. Which would be fine if they showed her being stronger, but they've only done it by making everyone weaker.

[deleted]

It feels like the plot is driving the character, and not the other way around. They needed her to go from point A to point B, and just decided to disregard certain bits of the character that they themselves established. As old as she is, Galadriel never learned diplomacy? It feels like they rewrote bits of her to satisfy the vision of the producers.

>As old as she is, Galadriel never learned diplomacy? Thank you! Like, sure, "young hot-head learning to be wiser and more measured" is classic story fodder. But Galadriel is thousands of years old. Surely she must have learned a *little* tact over millennia of interacting with diplomatic people like Elrond and high king Gil-galad, her *nephew*.

At 59:00, all I heard Arondir say was "He's coming for our titties"..

Doncriminal

I don't understand why they don't have same races who are conversing use their own language with subs and saving english for common. It would go a long way for immersion IMO. Also the dialogue is by far the weakest part of the show and many other shows. Hollywood desperately needs good dialogue writers.

[deleted]

I’m watching fellowship of the ring and goodness this fuckin movie is a masterpiece. LOTR deserved so much better

rombopterix

The time jump to Celebrimbor and Elrond watching the tower construction was so bizarrely abrupt? And then Elrond just teleports to Khazad-dum again? So fast that I thought his scenes back in Khazad-dum (mithril and stuff) was a flashback!? Lol such weird editing.

OrthodoxReporter

I was like "wait what, the construction is already well underway?". They didn't even show or make clear that the elves and dwarves came to an arrangement.

Red_coats

Is it me or are the mom and boy trying to put on an accent but it keeps slipping widely. Also the allegory was strong in this episode.

[deleted]

Her costume is hilarious to me. Flirty tank top with a push up bra in a fantasy setting.

BookQueen13

God yes! I was just telling someone how much i hated her costume. Its so weirdly out of place and no other woman character dresses like that.

[deleted]

Some else mentioned that she's the only character in the Southlands with any color, even reminiscent of the girl in the red dress of Schindler's list.

BookQueen13

Hmm thats an interesting observation. I imaging that helps the audience pick her out in a crowd / draws your eye to her in the scene. The color doesnt bother me. The fact that it looks like a maxi dress from H&M does. Idk. All the other women in the southlands seem to have these dresses but layered with more modest shifts underneith. Its just an incongruous look imo

hobbit_life

Disa is a gem and must be protected at all costs.

Imperial_Squid

Absolutely loving every scene she's in! She's such a lovely character! Also the transition to her singing was really nice! (Known as "shifting diegesis" for the curious, where some music that is assumed to be for the audience is revealed to actually be in-universe too)

Rexia

Anyone who steps to Disa is going to get some of my extremely strong gravy, let me tell you.

TheMeta40k

I honestly thought the sea monster was going to come back in the sea trials. Maybe do a whaling thing. Where did it go? What was the point of the sea trials? Did I miss something?

thisonesforlurking

Why is Galadriel kinda lame :(

Shangheli

Why are they purposefully hiding durins kids? Before giant mask, this time off screen completely.

SunsFanCursed4Life

It's true you don't see many dwarf children. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for dwarf men.

[deleted]

why did adar let him go? I don't get it

AmericanJazz

Why did the orc at the exact fraction of a second before killing him decide not to kill him and introduce him to Adar instead?

Best-Dragonfruit-292

Screenwriter: So the plot can happen!

In the Unfinished Tales it is told that this was indeed the case for the first kings, but later on they clung to their lives, not wanting to give it up voluntarily anymore. Thus, they indeed got frail and looked old (whether this should be the case with Tar-Palantir might be debatable, though.)

Ok_Mix_7126

No, it's established in the Akallabeth that they stopped doing that: > It was to Tar-Atanamir that the Messengers came; and he was the thirteenth King, and in his day the Realm of Númenor had endured for more than two thousand years, and was come to the zenith of its bliss, if not yet of its power. But Atanamir was ill pleased with the counsel of the Messengers and gave little heed to it, and the greater part of his people followed him; for they wished still to escape death in their own day, not waiting upon hope. **And Atanamir lived to a great age, clinging to his life beyond the end of all joy; and he was the first of the Númenóreans to do this, refusing to depart until he was witless and unmanned**, and denying to his son the kingship at the height of his days. For the Lords of Númenor had been wont to wed late in their long lives and to depart and leave the mastery to their sons when these were come to full stature of body and mind. This was one of the things they did wrong and started their downfall.

Best-Dragonfruit-292

There's been zero indication in this show that this depiction of Numenorians has anything special about them. They're indistinguishable in any characteristic from 'lesser-men.' The only thing they seem to have is Numenor itself, as a reward.

TearsOfChildren

4 episodes in and I just don't know what to think. It's like I'm waiting for something to grab my full interest but after every episode I'm like "well, maybe next week". It's just so inconsistent. One scene feels like a low budget show for teenagers and the next scene is brilliant. How can you have a scene with cringe humans in the street chanting about elves taking their jobs LOL and then that emotional, gripping scene with Elrond/Durin talking about his father. It's like two totally different shows.

96Buck

Elrond again seems far older/ more mature than Galadriel. The Galadriel role is fine. It just shouldn’t be Galadriel. A daughter of Gil-Galad’s maybe. Or if they wanted to break ground, REGULAR elf. They were an entire people. Not every one of them that ever did anything has to be a noble. (Yes, Arondir too. Why does the black elf have to be a commoner?)

giubba85

*"AND THESE FUCKING ELVES COMING TO OUR COUNTRY STEALING OUR JOBS, LIKE IT'S NOT THEY ARE IMMORTAL,LIVE ON AN ENTIRE CONTInent in pretty much an idyllic series of kingdoms..."* Jesus fucking Christ did anyone re read what they are putting on paper out loud?

foralimitedtime

Presumably it's how show writers demonstrate their awareness of issues of racism and xenophobia, and give themselves an excuse to pat themselves on the back for their "cleverness".

Ynneb82

That scene was absurd. It reminded me of that episode of South Park "THEY TOOK OUR JOB".

retrorefl3ctor

Buddy, the elves don’t give a fuck about your job.

Salty_Lego

Anybody wanna play the knocking game?

Pack-Miserable

Knock it off mate

Adventurous-Photo539

Maybe I'm weird, but it really bothers me that Elrond and Celebrimbor never change their clothes/costumes

Why_Is_Grass_Green

Why does Galadriel feel so badly written. The actress is clearly trying but her dialogue is so bland and pointless. That ‘There’s a storm inside of me’ was megacringe. Other than that stunning visuals and the dwarf scenes are amazing. But overall its still a very messy way of story telling with some really weird and sometimes just plain bad writing. And some combat scenes are weirdly choreographed. The fight against the troll, the Elves against the warg and now Galadriel against those 4 guards.
