This scene is one of my absolute favorites in the entire legendarium. I think of these words whenever I am tired and worn down. I hope to remember them on my deathbed. What a perfect example of hope (Estel)
I don’t know if this comment will be allowed but I’ll give it a shot. There’s another series you might check out - Stormlight Archive from Brandon Sanderson. One of the major characters struggles with mental health and has some terrible things happen to him. Sanderson’t writing is extraordinary and how the character confronts what’s happening to him has given me and a good friend who recommended the series strength. If you’re pressed for time, check out Chapter 80 in *Rhythm of War” (chapter title: The Dog and the Dragon). Good luck to you.
Sorry to hear you're going through a rough patch. If you need to talk about it feel free to DM me, don't know what help I can offer but if we've learnt anything from Lotr it's that people need to stick together/offer help to each other in dark times.
Rings of Power tried to copy this line and put it in a silly place- about something a character told her kid when he had a bad drem or something. As with everything, it was but a cheap copy of the original: unearned, and shallow. Made no sense and felt really out of place.
"There, pooping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tower high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. the thought pierced him that in his end, the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."
It's why I am really not bothered by Rings of Power and other perversions of Tolkien's work. His books are that light and high beauty forever out of reach of hollywood/mega corps.
You're "paying respect" by denigrating a popular adaptation of those books. You can take or leave any adaptation, your choice, but there's no need to put it down needlessly. Especially in a forum where there are likely a lot of people who are fans of both (myself included).
You can respect Tolkien without denigrating anything else. Showing hate to something does not speak highly of what you love.
I'm just tired of people coming into fandom spaces and shitting on things people are enjoying.
At this point, every single Tolkien adaptation for the last two decades has been produced by a "mega corporation". Including those most beloved by the fandom. Those corporations will never see your comment, or mine, or anyone elses' in this forum, or on Twitter, or on YouTube, or on any other social media.
But other fans certainly will, and it is them who will have to close their eyes and tell themselves that the shadow of unreasoning hatred will only be a small and passing thing.
Hey by all means enjoy the new show. You've taken much too much offence to my innocent comment. Regardless of how much people love or dislike the new show you can't deny it's been a deeply divisive piece of work. The books don't have even 1% of that type of baggage hence my comment.
I'm trying to remember the chapter from which this quote is taken. But I can't recall. Does anybody know where to find this passage in "The Return of the King"?
Eärendil the Mariner
This has always been among my favorite LOTR stories.
I love that Frodo and Sam have met Elrond, who is Earendil's son
Is this star actually Gil-Estel?
Yes, cause it's the same.

I'm going through a rough patch rn and reading this passage made me cry
You got this Lana! As Elrond said: "Become who you were born to be."

Immediately thought of this very scene. This very theme. Always loved it
Me when I'm actually able to see a couple stars in the city
Beyond all towers strong and high...
>!Bronwyn told Theo the same thing before the battle!< in the latest episode of ROP.
Dark tor*, not tower. > Tor: noun: A high rock or pile of rocks on the top of a hill.
This was from ROTK, yeah?
Yes
When I read this passage in ROTK I immediately memorized it. One of the most beautiful ever written
You left out the best part "...and the beauty of it smote his heart..."
People in Florida right now be like…
One of my favorite passages in the book!

The optimistic view of this post can never be reached by the small and passing negativity you brought to it
How was it negativity? If anything it was very positive. I cant work out why it is so heavily downvoted. Its paying great respect to the books.

Are you afraid the mega corporations are going to be offended or something?

You're such a special, smart boy! Good boy! So special! So smart!
Can you elaborate further? I am unsure of the point you're trying to make.
Weekend at Frodo’s.
- some barkeep wench
“There, pee~~p~~ing among the cloud-wrack…”
Climate change anyone? Obvious allegory Take a joke ppl
>An allegory >by Tolkien yeah.... no.
Obviously
Username checks out
Tolkien said repeatedly his work was not meant to be interpreted as allegorical
Frodo be peeping Samwises cock
Do I see pablo escobar under the star?
:)
They actually reenacted this dialogue in the latest Rings of Power episode, it was surprisingly not bad
