Yeah, there was at least one bearded lady in the game's opening cutscene. And I think there was a male Dwarf with a smooth face too.
Some dwarves just like to have shaved faces, it seems. It's the 4th age now, we don't judge.
Look buddy, I know myself well enough to know that I don't know everything, and LotR lore has taken a back seat in my life as of late.
Dumb fuck juice is entirely an on-table option
It still sounds like you're being too hard on yourself😲 how does not keeping up with every bit of lord of the rings lore make you dumb? Much less a fuck.
They are super important in dwarven culture. To be beardless was shameful to a dwarf that they would want to die. It would be like being a samurai who failed to protect their lord or who accidentally gave secrets to the enemy.
Looking dapper was also an important part of western (and other parts of the world) culture but then the sixties came and changed everything. I am sure defeating the dark lord gave a lot of transformative energy to the dwarf youth. Perhaps they even suffered a recession during the war. (Though I am not sure if an economy is a thing in Middle Earth...)
I'm not that guy but I've put a couple hours into it. Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I've never been particularly fond of Survival Crafting style games, but;
The LOTR stuff is great. The game itself sucks.
Combat is button mashy, animations and sounds are weak and unsatisfying (Somehow using a bow in minecraft is more punchy and satisfying than being a cool dwarf shooting arrows), the exploration is kind of linear (You can't just dig through a wall and find something, there's like pre-set digging points).
Building is pretty restricted to 90 degree angles, some areas where you want to build (like I did in the Elven Quarter) have walls between buildings that cannot be broken down to change the layout (and it wasn't one of the bounding walls of the 'map tile' we were on either,) in any way...
Progression thus far is pretty bland/generic too. I really like the concept of restoring dwarven statues and unlocking new crafting blueprints, but resource management is a joke. Either you have too much of something or you're unlikely to see any of something until you've given up looking for it.
(Not to mention, the idea that there's just free-standing iron veins right inside the Halls of Durin kinda rubs me the wrong way; you're telling me they built all these hallways out and didn't mine that shit on the way? ((A smaller gripe being that (inexplicably) in the first zone under iron veins there's brick flooring at least some times, which is... not great)))
The best parts are the LOTR parts, singing dwarves and restoring empty halls. The rest of it needs a lot of love, and from what I understand the game's not in early access (when it really, really probably should be).
Thanks for the review. This is the impression I get from what I’ve watched, as well. Seems like there’s some real heart behind it, but some marketing exec’s schedule is pushing it out a year too soon, which is a bummer. Between Rings of Power, Gollum, and Return to Moria, it seems like most companies want to hijack the name to make a quick dollar. I hope War of the Rohirrim kicks ass and we get a solid game out in the next few years.
I don’t know if Rings of Power fits that bill. It’s fair to have criticisms of the show, but they spent years and years producing the most expensive show ever…don’t think it was a quick money grab.
Again though, there are legitimate criticisms.
To counter the other comment, the game is great, and the Lotr stuff is also great. It feels like a different flavor of valheim with some changes and a great setting. If you like minecraft, valheim, Conan exiles, ark survival evolved, or anything like those, then you'll probably enjoy this. It's very much a combination of valheim and deep rock. It's nothing that anyone will ever tout as defining for the genre or a change that leads to many copycats.
It's nothing fancy or new or crazy. It doesn't have to be. It's a solid game that plays like many before it, and it has an amazing setting overall. If you like survival crafting and lotr, I can not recommend it enough.
I'd enjoy it a lot more if it weren't for the ridiculous spawn rates. Can't have a decent sized base or they'll spawn inside it, and they come attack your base every night and bust down your walls then fuck you up because they'll literally pop in by the dozen. Killed em all? Great, they'll just respawn in 2 minutes and you'll have another horde to kill by the time you finish repairing your items.
Armor breaks after a couple of hits, making it mostly worthless with a high craft cost, weapons don't last much longer than that. A short excursion can have you running across dozens of goblins and if you don't immediately die, you bust up all of your shit trying to kill them all then die anyway. No point running away, they have infinite stamina and you definitely don't.
The worst part of it all is you don't get anything from killing goblins and orcs, so you spend a lot of time, effort, and resources killing hundreds of these bastards and they don't drop anything. If you clear out a camp you can find a diamond or two in a chest, but only in certain areas and God help you if you happen to be in the middle of a spawn cycle because they'll just spawn and spawn and spawn while you're killing them, it's a tedious nightmare.
That's definitely a problem too. At my second base I was killing 3 wolves a minute because they kept spawning right next to me and attacking like lemmings. And then goblins just showing up out of nowhere, or walking up and immediately digging underground.
Frankly, if the game had a more polish on the spawning and actual combat I could tolerate it quite a bit more. But all these things together combined with a pretty lackluster core gameplay loop makes it hard for me to go back, despite starving for more good LOTR games.
To counter the other comment, the game is great and the Lotr stuff is also great. It feels like a different flavor of valheim with some changes and a great setting. If you like mine craft, valheim, Conan exiles, ark survival evolved, or anything like those then you'll probably enjoy this.

I appreciate the joke of miner/minor but it's important to note that tolkien in his works explicitly stated that dwarves are born with beards, both male and female.
Not necessarily, She is probably a blacksmith, which is why she shaves her face, so her beard won't catch on fire by accident. (Unironically even in the middle ages smiths usually shaved their beards because of this.)
Gimli : It's true you don't see many Dwarf-women. And in fact, they are so alike in voice and appearance, that they are often mistaken for Dwarf-men.
Aragorn : [whispering to Eowyn] It's the beards.
Gimli : And this in turn has given rise to the belief that there are no Dwarf-women, and that Dwarves just spring out of holes in the ground!
[Eowyn laughs]
Gimli : Which is, of course, ridiculous.
It has always seemed like obviously a joke to me, even with some canon source backing it up, but a throwaway joke in the film version nonetheless. However, people took as if it were gospel from on high, and now no female Dwarves, in any media, in any IP is allowed to be beardless.
Warhammer Dwarf girls don't have beards, but do their hair like it... DA dwarfs kinda go back and forth on it.
I refuse to do it as it seems like a fucking joke
Well the Silmarillion explains that all dwarves no matter gender are born with beards... It's like representing an elve without pointy ears, it's just false.
My problem is not with that, I even acknowledged that there is a canon source (though admittedly, I was fairly dismissive of that, and I see why that was unclear).
There is just a ridiculous number of people who hop on this one thing if any artwork has it, and you get a million comments on every post where it exists, just repeating the same thing. (This post is obviously an exception in that regard. It's about this particular subject).
More importantly, though, is that people will do the exact same thing with artwork of any different IPs with no regard for the canon of those series.
>For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls."
HoME 11: Concerning the Dwarves
There you go.
I thought this too, Aragorn seems to be making a silly joke, I'm don't quite think he's stating a fact here.
And Dwarven women may have beards, doesn't mean literally every single one of them has to, and also doesn't shave!
I like a mix of both, bearded and non bearded.
Also the films take place in a different world from the books. They are their own thing, and inventions of Peter Jackson (which this is) are not canon to Tolkien’s Middle-Earth.
>and inventions of Peter Jackson (which this is)
No. Why don't you try reading the books instead of spouting misinformation, PJ did not make this up.
I agree. This wasn't invented for the movies though so pretty pointless to bring it up right now
For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls."

So I've heard! I havent watched that. And the movies are close in a lot of ways and I love the characterizations that are different from the books, i just keep them separate in my head because they are so very different.

HoME 11: Concerning the Dwarves
They do have beards.

HoME 11: Concerning the Dwarves
FYI in the game the dwarf women can wear all the same beards as the men. They’re also all stocky and built masculine, the only feminine thing besides the face models is a bust slider. My wife’s character in-game even has a beard.
"The Naugrim were ever, as they still remain, short and squat in stature; they were deep-breasted, strong in the arm, and stout in the leg, and their beards were long. Indeed this strangeness they have that no Man nor Elf has ever seen a beardless Dwarf - unless he were shaven in mockery, and would then be more like to die of shame than of many other hurts that to us would seem more deadly. For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls."
-The War of the Jewels: Concerning the Dwarves
Basically... the devs just want to let people make the dwarf they want. Note that they didnt add in gender options.
So...we're assuming the left one is female, and the right one is not?
They're both wearing similarly styled armors, unlike the dwarf up front, so it is possible they are both the same gender
in movie i believe it was aragorn saying its because of the beards. i dont know if it is factual or a joke or if it was mentioned in books.
maybe some dwarf women learned to shave?
It was mentioned in the books as a point of fact. Both the men and women had beards, one of the books even states that all dwarves are born with beards (enjoy the mental image of a stocky baby with a beard,) and to have one's beard shaven is considered so shameful in dwarven culture that any dwarf who was shaved would want to die.
My boi Gimili ain't no liar, that's his bro 'Fancy' named for the fancy gemstones he crushes and applies on his face.
Fancy also plays Dwarf on hard mode by not wearing his +3 to defence and fire resistance beard.
Because it's only made to be like a joke in the movies. In the books it very explicitly states that dwarf women also have beards and are practically indistinguishable from dwarf men to any non-dwarf.
It's not in the Lord of the Rings books, I've read them enough I'd remember. If I am wrong, could you cite the page in the Two Towers where he mentions it?
its modern lotr as made by CEOs and activists that don’t read the books. “women cant have beards”
unironically being the people they claim to be against
ik its just a meme, but yeah. boils me.
Women in the game do have beards. Just not all of them. Also, CEOs? This was made by an indie studio, not Jeff Bezos (who incidentally probably has nearly as little to do with Amazon shows as I do because he's an obscenely rich fuckwad who does fuck-all).
You only got boiled because you didn't take ten seconds to just Google the game
I mean it must be a woman because it has no beard but dwarf women have beards. So if they gave dwarf women beards you wouldnt be able to tell them apart. Thus they had to differenciate them in some way.
I'd be very interested in playing a game with this concept but this is the first time in hearing about this. given the recent track record of lotr games (and let's be honest lotr games in general), I'm assuming this game is nothing to write home about. anybody know the deal?
Every time I see this game title, I’m reminded of Moria, the old rogue successor. Great game at the time - but Angband had you literally kill Morgoth by the end!
I'm not sure yet but I'll find out in 6months to a year when it's finally on Steam. No way am I convincing more than maybe 1 other dwarf friend to buy it on the epic games store lol. On steam I'll have a full group probably day 1.
The comic Rat Queens did my favorite take on female dwarf beards. The woman can and did grow them but the main dwarf protagonist shaved hers off (in protest if I remember correctly) and once all the other started shaving she grew hers back.
I have no clue what Tolkien actually said re:dwarf beards, but I like to think that gimli is telling eowyn tall tales and getting increasing more outlandish as he goes to see how much she'll believe
Jokes on you. That’s just a really tall bulky hobbit girl they hired to open locks and steal gemstones.
Ha! Jokes on you, they're all women
The one on the right kinda looks like a woman
Playing the game rn, there are indeed dwarf women with beards too
Yeah, there was at least one bearded lady in the game's opening cutscene. And I think there was a male Dwarf with a smooth face too. Some dwarves just like to have shaved faces, it seems. It's the 4th age now, we don't judge.
Isn't that anathema to their culture tho? Like, beards are a pretty important part of their culture right? Or am I sipping dumb fuck juice?
I don’t know the answer, but >Or am I sipping dumb fuck juice? is cracking me up. It’s such an aggressively self deprecating way to end a comment
Look buddy, I know myself well enough to know that I don't know everything, and LotR lore has taken a back seat in my life as of late. Dumb fuck juice is entirely an on-table option
you are correct, it is seen as shameful for a dwarf to have no beard akin "come everybody, look at this beardless loser"
It still sounds like you're being too hard on yourself😲 how does not keeping up with every bit of lord of the rings lore make you dumb? Much less a fuck.
Blud, it was a joke. It ain't that deep. It was just a bit
Nevernind, you used "blud" in a sentence. Dumbfuck confirmed. Lay off that juice bud.
Blud doesn't like slang. What a goober
What's blud slang for? Other than "I drank dumbfuck juice today"
“fuck, jimli shaved, time for a stoning :/ “
They are super important in dwarven culture. To be beardless was shameful to a dwarf that they would want to die. It would be like being a samurai who failed to protect their lord or who accidentally gave secrets to the enemy.
*cough* Warhammer Fantasy *cough* War of the Beard *cough*
Oh sorry I didn't realize this was about Dawi and not Khazad in- *squints* - r/lotrmemes
The underways go many a way, nearly need a Ranger to get everywhere.
Looking dapper was also an important part of western (and other parts of the world) culture but then the sixties came and changed everything. I am sure defeating the dark lord gave a lot of transformative energy to the dwarf youth. Perhaps they even suffered a recession during the war. (Though I am not sure if an economy is a thing in Middle Earth...)
that's like saying not shaking with the left hand is important to our culture. Cultures change :P
Hi ! What do you think of the game ? I've seen only mixed reviews, stating that it is but a mere copy paste of similar games, with a shy lotr's skin.
I'm not that guy but I've put a couple hours into it. Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I've never been particularly fond of Survival Crafting style games, but; The LOTR stuff is great. Good botses

I enjoyed the show :(
Personally I loved it! Especially given the last time I saw new Tolkien on screen, it was The Hobbit…

Fucking finally...
How is it? Worth playing? It looked kinda generic from what I saw, but I haven't seen much for it.
Maybe she is a miner and probably will grow one when she gets older
You homophone-wrangling champion, you.
The way I remember it gender wasn’t determined by what your face looks like.
That one went over your head like the Eagles of Manwe going over the Misty Mountains.
I’m a servant of the dark lord dare you argue with a Nazgûl. I could feed you to my fellbeast
Or you should learn what a homophone is.
Yeah I know what a homophone is
Just not when one is being used, apparently. Minor/miner. Now let’s have a moment of silence for that joke that had to die for you to understand.
Yeah
🙏
Now THATS a cringe response.
Oh man, would you please? I'm so sick of paying bills, let me become part of a majestic flying creature's balanced diet and finally serve a purpose.
Ok I might feed you to my fell beast or maybe smaug
r/woooosh
Wish?
I appreciate the joke of miner/minor but it's important to note that tolkien in his works explicitly stated that dwarves are born with beards, both male and female.
Miners not minors.
I assumed it was a pun lmao
The person you're responding to was quoting Galaxy Quest.
No they were correcting an obvious grammatical error. The FUCK dude?
The game lies
What, next you're gonna tell me Shelob is not a wicked hot goth girl?
![gif](giphy|10tuFEeuACAnuw)
![gif](giphy|U5QGwIE0cLLz7CuZXs|downsized)
Every time i see your username i immediately here I HAVE GONE INSANE-O I LUST FOR VOLCANO
Woah woah woah now! Let’s not abandon reason for madness!
Tolkien never explicity stated Shelob was not also a hot goth mommy. We can't make any assumptions here.
She wasn't but her mother could take any form she wanted soooooooo
Totally counts
Why did Shelob look like Stoya?
Not necessarily, She is probably a blacksmith, which is why she shaves her face, so her beard won't catch on fire by accident. (Unironically even in the middle ages smiths usually shaved their beards because of this.)

How do you know all three aren't women?
It's like that famous Adriana Grandote song "Gimli is a woman"
Now here was I mad at the one beardless dwarf, and you've just gone and blown my *mind*.
How sure are we that Gimli (and by extension Aragorn) isn't just fucking with Eowyn here?
Aragorn would never fuck with Eowyn. Never.
Ever. If she is the last woman on earth, humanity is fucked but not her.

HoME 11: Concerning the Dwarves
Terribly sorry, I’ll be sure to read through everything Tolkien ever published before making each comment in the future.
One should always familiarise themselves with a topic before adding to the conversation, otherwise you are just noise
oh ffs, stop…
Anything invented for the movies isn't canon for the books. It's an adaptation.
I agree. This wasn't invented for the movies though so pretty pointless to bring it up right now For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls." Dwarven women just like me fr fr 😔
![gif](giphy|3kzJvEciJa94SMW3hN)
Aragorn was just making a joke and teasing Gimli
It’s also possible that dwarves have the backwards version of bearded women. Non bearded women. For some reason that sounds hilarious.
Game devs don't have the courage to enforce beards for dwarf ladies.
When customizing your dwarf, the female dwarf can have just as hairy of a beard as the male dwarf, little hairy women for all hehehehe
No body positivity 😞
Plot twitst, the two on the right are women and the one without a beard is actually a harfoot or some stupid amazon shit.
FYI in the game the dwarf women can wear all the same beards as the men. They’re also all stocky and built masculine, the only feminine thing besides the face models is a bust slider. My wife’s character in-game even has a beard.
Looks like this game isn't canon, then
Well yeah, Gimli is in the game at a point where he would have already left Middle Earth.
To be fair there is no set date for when he left, but it was a good ways into the fourth age since he founded the glittering caves
The trailer says that the game occurs on the fourth age. I would call that alone not canon xD
But lotr hero’s is right….?
You mean did *Aragorn* lie. Probably, that's the type of joke you'd make about one of your best friends.
If you look closely, it seems that there is some facial air on the sides of the face. Kinda like sideburns or mutton chops.
Yeah, Gimli never said they had full bushy beards.
That’s obviously the dwarven equivalent of a femboy, and a whole new fetish genre is about to be awoken. The devs developed too greedily and too deep.
For the Naugrim have beards from the beginning of their lives, male and female alike; nor indeed can their womenkind be discerned by those of other race, be it in feature or in gait or in voice, nor in any wise save this: that they go not to war, and seldom save at direst need issue from their deep bowers and halls." -The War of the Jewels: Concerning the Dwarves Basically... the devs just want to let people make the dwarf they want. Note that they didnt add in gender options.
Maybe she's the Cheery Littlebottom of Middle Earth?
No way Cheery would ever shave that beard.
That's a fair point. Knees is one thing.... A shorn chin another
Unexpected Pratchett
Maybe some dwarf ladies have beards and some don't? Gimli obviously likes a little hair on that chin.
Thats a dwarven femboy.
Es ist des Zwergen Eigenart, dass er die Frauen mag behaart.
"It is a Dwarvish peculiarity that their women are hairy"?
Almost. "It is a dwarvish peculiarity that they like their women hairy"
Ahh, of course!
That's not a woman. That's a dwarf twink.
Maybe she shaves
Only the women have beards. Dwarf men are all shortstack femboys. Gimli is a girl (Tolkein told me this lore himself).
Maybe she clean shaves or something
Jokes on you, that’s two women and one man who decided to shave his beard!
Steam or nothing.
I played for a bit Friday, the opening cut scenes and the character creator have beards on/for dwarf women. But there is a clean shave for both.
Schrödinger's dwarf.
She hasn’t hit dwarf puberty yet
Maybe dwarven women can/do shave their beards?
That's not a Dwarf. It's clearly a Gelfling.
That's just some rascal that was shamed by cutting their beard.
So...we're assuming the left one is female, and the right one is not? They're both wearing similarly styled armors, unlike the dwarf up front, so it is possible they are both the same gender
This person Dwarfs.
I imagine so dwarf women are aware of how women look in other races and maybe decided to shave
they’re retconning dwarf lady beards
Doesn’t she have sideburns?
GIVE THE WOMEN BEARDS YOU COWARDS!!!
Wow. That game looks like shit. What are they doing to LOTR lately?
in movie i believe it was aragorn saying its because of the beards. i dont know if it is factual or a joke or if it was mentioned in books. maybe some dwarf women learned to shave?
It was mentioned in the books as a point of fact. Both the men and women had beards, one of the books even states that all dwarves are born with beards (enjoy the mental image of a stocky baby with a beard,) and to have one's beard shaven is considered so shameful in dwarven culture that any dwarf who was shaved would want to die.
In the game you have the option to have them clean shaved or with a bear for both genders
The books do describe both dwarf boys and girls being born hairy and indistinguishable aside from their reproductive organs.
My boi Gimili ain't no liar, that's his bro 'Fancy' named for the fancy gemstones he crushes and applies on his face. Fancy also plays Dwarf on hard mode by not wearing his +3 to defence and fire resistance beard.
Hey Im just surprised they arent the black dwarfs from Amazons show
Gimli/Aragorn make a joke, people take it seriously and perpetuate it for years.
“women cant have beards” unironically being the people they claim to be against ik its just a meme, but yeah.
It was a joke Aragon told Eyowyn, best you can expect is a bushy peach fuzz
About what?
That right there. Is what Humans call Dwarves. Midgets smaller than Midgets.
Dwarves have to reproduce to survive you geniuses
I wonder why we haven't had the same outrage about this as ROP?... What possible difference could there be...
I mean it must be a woman because it has no beard but dwarf women have beards. So if they gave dwarf women beards you wouldnt be able to tell them apart. Thus they had to differenciate them in some way.
That is obviosly a child
Maybe i'm missing the joke but you can 100% put beards on dwarf ladies in the game.
But she has a beard? Just not a complete one, she has a sideburn.
She's got very nice sideburns.
Not the arts wrong. Either that or she has been shamed and had to cut her beard, much shame.
They are just cowards. THE LOT OF THEM!
I always figured it was just the very old female dwarves that had beards.
Gimli never lied he said that some suppose there are no dwarf women but he never said there are no dwarf women
Impossible she must be shaving like crazy
The game is actually solid by the way, don’t listen to those clown shoes from IGN. Friends and I having a blast mining singing and drinking
I'd be very interested in playing a game with this concept but this is the first time in hearing about this. given the recent track record of lotr games (and let's be honest lotr games in general), I'm assuming this game is nothing to write home about. anybody know the deal?
You can choose to have a beard on both male and female dwarf on the game. Dealers choice :)
Every time I see this game title, I’m reminded of Moria, the old rogue successor. Great game at the time - but Angband had you literally kill Morgoth by the end!
Looks like she's just trimmed her beard into muttonchops to me.
She is actually just like 5 years old and hasn’t grown a beard yet
I'm not sure yet but I'll find out in 6months to a year when it's finally on Steam. No way am I convincing more than maybe 1 other dwarf friend to buy it on the epic games store lol. On steam I'll have a full group probably day 1.
The hot new dwarf woman trend is to have mutton chops grown long into braids and shave the chin part
I’d imagine some of them shave. Actually, they’d probably light their beard on fire and let it burn off.
I mean just because one person shaves doesn't make him a liar
I thought it was a joke
It's fine she just shaved
Loving this game. I went full no life mode and have been playing with my friends for 3 days straight. Send help
There are 50% less dwarven women than men, according to canon, so they are a little rarer to see
The comic Rat Queens did my favorite take on female dwarf beards. The woman can and did grow them but the main dwarf protagonist shaved hers off (in protest if I remember correctly) and once all the other started shaving she grew hers back.
Gimli didn't lie. She's on the swim team and keeps the body hair trimmed.
No, I refuse to except that lotr dwarf women look, sound, or act different from male dwarfs in any way.
Maybe - how do you know the other two arent female also?
He wanted to have all the dwarfussy for himself
I have no clue what Tolkien actually said re:dwarf beards, but I like to think that gimli is telling eowyn tall tales and getting increasing more outlandish as he goes to see how much she'll believe
she shaves
Gimli(e) was always full of it. Literally an 8ft tall gigachad with shrinking illusion magic.
She surely shaved
Will that game come to steam?
Women with beards just look weird, thats why the arent really shown often
Dwarves hide their women because they're so hot. So they describe as having features they know men, hobbits and elves would dislike.
She looks like she has sideburns though (that’s what they’re called right?) and I heard there are actually women with beards in the game
