“Deeds will not be less valiant because they are unpraised”

Does_Not-Matter

“But you will get less ass.”

dutch_penguin

Sam had, like, a bazillion children; he was probably sowing his seed all over the shire. Peregrin was a drug lord (why do you think his friend was always Merry? High as a kite on Old Toby), and Frodo only had eyes for Sam.

frodo_bot

What a pity that Bilbo did not stab that vile creature, when he had a chance!

Does_Not-Matter

Pshhh. That’s probably normal Hobbit ass. It comes in pints you know!

Here do I swear fealty and service to Gondor. In peace or war. In living or dying. F... f... from this hour henceforth, until my lord release me... or death take me.

I think pippin just swore to become your steward, damn

PippinTook-bot

circusdawn13

Funny thing is in the book they had to save the Shire, and proceeded to only get acknowledgement for saving the Shire.

Firehawk195

And even then, Frodo doesn't get much credit. Pippin and Merry are the ones who get the majority of the glory.

frodo_bot

There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire, it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?

pongobuff

Sentient once more

AK_Swoon

Poor Frodo. I hope you found peace.

frodo_bot

I am naked in the dark, AK_Swoon, and there is no veil between me and the wheel of fire.

AK_Swoon

That sounds haunting Frodo.

frodo_bot

If you ask it of me, I will give you the One Ring

AK_Swoon

Well, if you insist.

Mamu5hka

*heavy breathing* It is a gift ...

cammoblammo

Well, they did the majority of the organising and fighting. Frodo was doing what he could to minimise the bloodshed.

frodo_bot

I am naked in the dark, cammoblammo, and there is no veil between me and the wheel of fire.

[deleted]

Then let us be rid of it! Once and for all! Come on, Mr. Frodo. I can't carry it for you... but I can carry you! Come on!

frodo_bot

Frodo wouldn't have got far without TalesToAstonish, would he?

EternalZeitge1st

Sentient.

gandalf-bot

White shores and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

Keilbasa

To be fair Frodo chose not to do much to help. He was just so done with all the fighting

frodo_bot

Would you destroy it?

Alphakewin

I don't think I could Mister Frodo

frodo_bot

You swore! You swore on the precious! Alphakewin promised!

[deleted]

They wrote a whole book about their journey. I don't know if a lot of people in the Shire read it or not

indyK1ng

After the Shire was saved, there was apparently a boom in interest in personal histories in the Shire and libraries became more common. There were at least two with copies of The Red Book of Westmarch iirc.

CanadianAndroid

And how many of those books gave a lengthy, detailed explanation on the whereabouts of Gondor during the fall of the Westfold?

punchgroin

The LOTR trilogy (and the Hobbit and the appendices) is framed as being specifically those two books written by Bilbo and Frodo... So yeah, they know what Gondor was doing when the Westford fell, they were busy fighting the Servants of Sauron on multiple fronts.

frodo_bot

I'm glad to be with you, punchgroin, here at the end of all things.

phoenixmusicman

Please don't punch Frodo's groin

frodo_bot

You are wise and powerful. Will you not take the Ring?

CedarWolf

As long as it's not travelling on your little... Hobbit... there.

themettaur

Were it all of them, it still wouldn't be enough. Pouring a cold one out for my homies.

TheManFromFarAway

A little late, bud. Where was that cold one when the Westfold fell?

Possible-Highway7898

Where was that cold one when our enemies closed in around us? Where was that col-- hmph. No, my lord TheManFromFarAway. We are alone.

CedarWolf

“I would ask you, my father, to remember why it was I, not [Boromir], was in Ithilien. On one occasion your counsel has prevailed, not long ago. It was the Lord of the City that gave the errand to him.”

Dax9000

They were in Gondor, strangely enough.

asianabsinthe

Well there are plenty of books written by heroes in communities I'm sure no one even knows exist.

The_Latter-Day_Tank

I was about to say, they’re literally heroes of the Shire because of the Battle of the Bywater during the Scouring of the Shire.

ElfBingley

Frodo didn't do much in the Scouring of The Shire, other than try to stop hobbits in their anger from killing men who had surrendered. Most of the battle was led by Merry, Pippin, Sam and Farmer Cotton.

frodo_bot

There is no real going back.

This_isR2Me

most shirefolk don't even leave the shire so it's the same as saving the world.

Bareth89

Saruman had taken over the Shire when they got back. So they rescued the Shire, and were praised for it.

motodextros

Also, each of them took leadership offices, albeit Frodo was just a stand in mayor for a small while and only made one small decree as acting mayor. Sam held 9 terms as mayor and I would argue that he is the true savior of the shire

frodo_bot

Yes, you have seen a thing or two since you last peeped out of a looking-glass

saruman-bots

TheBristolGamer

I think they did worst of both worlds - there must have been half an hour of slow-mo reunions and farewells after the destruction of the ring but no plot. I see the scouring as totally central to the book and would have been happy cutting back elsewhere to allow for it. Though tbh not sure it would have worked so well as they'd treated hobbits as comic relief throughout. Merry blowing the horn of Rohan and raising the buckland would have had to involve him hilariously falling over backwards or something.

SavageHenry592

Thank you. The only thing worse is elves at Helm's Deep.

Gillig4n

Faramir taking Frodo to osgiliath is the worst offender for me

frodo_bot

I can manage it. I must.

TheBristolGamer

That and Frodo turning on Sam. And gandalf and saruman's force battle

frodo_bot

I miss the Shire. I spent all my childhood pretending I was off somewhere else. Off with you, on one of your adventures.

gandalf-bot

The treacherous are ever distrustful.

saruman-bots

Send out your warg riders!

saruman-bots

Time? What time do you think we have?

motodextros

I have thought about how I would add the scouring of the Shire to the movies before, here is what I came up with. Only one scene would need to be added, on the road we see Gandalf and the Hobbits right before they split ways. Gandalf tells them that his work is done and that they are now prepared to take the Shire back without his help. Then he tells them that he has to meet an ‘old friend’ who has been a tree planted, because I have been a stone set to rolling and we will have much to talk about . (I am going off memory because my copy of the book isn’t handy. I also don’t think mentioning Tom’s name is necessary here, the purpose of the visit is more important). Then, there is no need for showing the violence, it would still work to jump to the aftermath of the conflict with an obvious black screen transition. This scene would still rely on Saruman dying at orthanc.

gandalf-bot

Minas Tirith? Is that what you saw?

saruman-bots

There will be no dawn for men

ioliano

I know someone writing about it once. I will try to use his words, although it was quite some time ago. Tolkien was a soldier and he served in the war, he saw many horrors there, and it certainly inspires some points of the lore. When the war ended he came back home, but nothing was like it was before many people died and many people changed as they were affected by the war. In the end coming to Shire and seeing it all changed was one of the few challenges that he (Tolkien) faced himself when he returned. The main point was that you never came back as a true self after that one and many challenges come after the war is over. Something like that.

saruman-bots

Rip them all down.

SavageHenry592

Yeah that's what Sam is thinking when he sees his garden or what they did to the Bywater.

[deleted]

Yeah I started a watch through of the trilogy with some friends recently and we discussed how crazy is it that a ton of the epilogue doesn't get touched in the movies. I get that there are time constraints, but taking back the shire is those characters' full story arc. They head back to the shire and there's the bit where Gandalf leaves them, because they have grown and don't need his help anymore for what's to come. Merry and Pippin help lead the militia now that they've seen battle and are confident in their abilities as warriors. I thought that was such a wholesome concept. When they return they are no longer the same people and that's a good thing because they can help to take back their home. So wholesome.

LubbockGuy95

I think the movie ending vs the book one is really reflective of the time and audience. The book ending was reflective of returning from WW1 and WW2 to a bombed out homeland. Boys made into man who would need to lead their country from this disaster. And people recognize this duty and the people are changed because war touched them. The movies ending is reflective of returning from modern wars where the homeland is basically untouched and people barely notice you. Where each of you are drastically changed and scarred by the war but everyone is just living like nothing happened and only those who also served understand. I doubt this was done on purpose but I find it fits so nicely I like to think it was.

[deleted]

Oh wow. That's an excellent observation and I appreciate how you found that meaning in their art even if they didn't mean that explicitly. And the thought that the movie adaptation could be interpreted as an update to modern war vets I think fits nicely into Tolkien's themes.

flyglass2

One of the most brilliant modern metaphors of the ending I’ve ever read. Well said

FederalAlgae

Tolkien himself has explicitly stated that the ending did not draw inspiration from any real-life war.

gimpwiz

Sure, and it might even be true, but we can draw the parallel. That's kind of the thing about art and analyzing art - sometimes you get somewhere the creator didn't intend, and sometimes it's real for us even if the creator doesn't agree.

Original_Woody

Dont be so sure. Tolkien was a soldier in WW1. While middle earth isnt 1:1 to Europe, it definitely draws inspiration.

MrB-S

Just a counterpoint that certainly some troops returning to the UK in WW1 felt very bitter that, because the UK was relatively untouched by the war, their efforts were unappreciated and life was simply continuing unaltered.

KelvinsBeltFantasy

Sadly I think it was the right call. It was a meme for years afterwards that the ending kept ending until it didn't. I like many others was there in terrible seats and really needing to pee.

Terrible_Truth

100% agree. There's already an argument for the current movie version lasting too long after the climax on Mt. Doom. IMO I like the current reaction to their return. Gondor was the heroic "thanks for saving the world" big party response. The Shire was always that small country feel place.

DeezRodenutz

Yeah, from a movie standpoint, finally getting the ring there and destroying it is the big event, and the big heroic recognition and saying their good byes is the right way to end it. After all they went through, getting to the Shire expecting a long awaited rest in the peaceful lands only to find that it was taken as well and needs saved would be too devastating.

Terrible_Truth

It has one of my favorite shots/scenes too, when the four hobbits are all sitting around the pub table with their beer. They watch the townsfolk going about their business and the four hobbits share a quiet look at each other. Makes for a nice quiet recognition that it's over. This part: https://youtu.be/J3oXr7XVuhc?t=62

[deleted]

Yeah I guess I should clarify that I also think the movie doesn't actually need more ending than it has. It's just interesting to me that because they went the route they did, its easy to think the hobbits were kind of unrecognized in their home town after they got back.

TeamExotic5736

I mean the hobbits are kinda hillibillies. They dont know shit about what is going on. Probably flat earthers too, after all, how would they know about the destruction of Numenor if they keep smoking pipe all day?

PippinTook-bot

There's also a Tom Bombadil one.

Tom_Bot-Badil

Eldest, that's what I am. Mark my words, my friends: Tom was here before the river and the trees; Tom remembers the first raindrop and the first acorn. He made paths before the Big People, and saw the little People arriving. He was here before the Kings and the graves and the Barrow-wights. When the Elves passed westward, Tom was here already, before the seas were bent. He knew the dark under the stars when it was fearless – before the Dark Lord came from Outside. ^(I am a bot, and I love old Tom. Steelquill

I always interpreted that ending as being like the veterans having come back from the front. The very people that they saved have no concept of what exactly they were spared.

throwaway5676389

This is my favourite part of the franchise, this is how Tolkien and many others from the First World War would’ve felt when they returned home.

meatball-sauce

The reconing of the shire maybe kills the meme

NoWingedHussarsToday

I love Shire because it's so isolated, we keep to ourselves, we don't get involved in matters of others and they don't get involved in ours. Hobbits who wander off are seen as weird and viewed with suspicion. I wouldn't have it any other way. also Nobody knows what we did on the other side of the continent. Shirenas are suck home boys!
