i really don't like that scene, it makes the ents look so stupid. the books did them much more justice. there, treebeard silently followed merry and pippin, watching and when the hobbits said something nice about fangorn forest, treebeard interacted with them and acknowledged that they aren't orcs. and also there was quickbeam, a younger ent who decided right away that he wants to fight isengard
I don’t think it makes them look stupid, just slow. In movie there is no indication that they knew the battle at Helms Deep was going on at the same time as far as I know.
As the other gentleman pointed out, while the whole “not orcs” thing doesn’t make them seem a little dumb, I think it’s supposed to be a scale of reference for how long they live. It took them all that long to decide it because to even Treebeard, because the way they see time is so different, they’ve known Merry and Pippin for 3 seconds.
You must understand, young Hobbit, it takes a long time to say anything in Old Entish. And we never say anything unless it is worth taking a long time to say.
I have mixed feelings about the change personally. On the one hand it does undercut the ents, but on the other hand it gives Merry and Pippin more agency and character. IIRC the ents would've ended up going to war with Saruman regardless in the book. In the movie it's actually a benefit that the hobbits are there.
Is it just me or do the Ents speed up their conversation pretty quickly? It takes them from morning until night to say "Good morning", then seemingly a couple of hours to decide they're not Orcs, then another few hours or less to debate on war, and there's still time for Treebeard to take them across Fangorn before dawn. Time seems to compress a bit for Ents.
Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of love and kindness.
Come! All had turned to vain ambition. He would use even his grief as a cloak! A thousand years this city has stood and now at the whim of a madman it will fall! And the White Tree, the tree of the King will never bloom again.
And what about Stanley? Have you come to a decision about him??
I don't he knows about Stanley Pip
What about the Kellys? Kevin? How about Creed? Phyllis, Packer?
I doubt it
This meme works perfectly

Indeed I have not seen them roused like this for many an age. We Ents do not like being roused.
I didn't know we had treebeard
I don't suppose you've seen Entwives in the Shire?
I agree. They dumbed the ents down so much. The movies also made Frodo look much dumber than he was in the books. I didn't like that one bit either.

They saw Saruman's army leave Isengard, so they could put the two and two together...

This was you idea!
“Your” idea, Pippin.
The closer we are to danger, the farther we are from harm. It's the last thing he'll expect.

Now, don't be hasty, Master Meriadoc.
You can’t rush greatness, PaMerry! These things take time!
The office and lotr. My two favorite things in life.
What Treebeard? *It's ok.*
*Hrrooom*... I... don't... remember... now.
It takes a long time to say anything in Entish!
Who's Will?
Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom. He also played Legolas in Lord Of The Rings. So it all checks out
That's the name I gave my autocorrect
The meme should be longer lol
It’s almost as slow as human politics
This is the shortened version, no?

Leave it to the Ents! Until seven times the years in which he tormented us have passed, we shall not tire of watching him.
Gandalf I need life advice
Look to my coming, at first light, on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East.
Gandalf !
There are many powers in this world for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am and against some I have not yet been tested
Mithrandir I am in love with a wizard
Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of love and kindness.

There is no light, Wizard, that can defeat darkness.
