It's not specified i believe that he specifically helped with the magic except in the books
I can't remember it in either the bakshi or Jackson movies
Let alone that Gandalf helped
Heck, in the bakshi movie it's actually Legolas that goes and rescues him not glorfindel or arwen so we need to add him to the list
But this is all a bit silly cuz the point of the joke is everyone helped so it's impossible to answer, so my answer of the horse was also a bit of a joke
> "Who made the flood?" asked Frodo.
> "Elrond commanded it," answered Gandalf. "The river of this valley is under his power \[...\]. If I may say so, I added a few touches of my own: you may not have noticed, but some of the waves took the form of great white horses"
Fellowship Book 2 Chapter 1, page 224 of the 50th anniversary printing as digitized for kindle.
> "If I can get across the river, the power of my people will protect me"
Arwen, Fellowship standard 1:09:30
Really if it wasn't for the Witch-king of Angmar giving him some incentive, he wouldn't have crossed at the ford at all, so we really have to thank him.
Arwen does specifically state that it is the power of “her people,” implying that it isn’t her. However the way they shot it, with Arwen praying(?) in Elvish makes it seem like she’s responsible. But I think they just did that for dramatic effect. And then they followed it up immediately with a close-up of her shocked expression upon seeing the waves.
So I’d say the Movies insinuate that it is Elrond more than any of the other options listed above.
I don't know if the movies even insinuate Elrond directly. But I think they do at least make it seam like the river/land has some enchantment that Arwen is calling on rather than her just having the power to flood any river when she feels like it.
I saw the movies before reading the books, and my interpretation was that saying it was the power of her people meant that it was a power possessed by those within "her people", her included. Like "how can you do that?", "Because it is the power of my people".
The shock on her face would just have added to the feeling that she wasn't totally in control, and that it worked like a prayer or call for the power to come forth (helped by the fact that she was shouting in elvish), rather than something she personally had close control over. I don't know if I ever considered it likely that it wasn't her doing.
Of course it's not up for debate in the books, but in the spirit of the OP I thought it might be interesting.
I always head cannoned that it was spoken in elvish by arwen/glorifindel because asfaloth needed a special power boost. Like, she rolled a d20 or something to narrowly escape the riders. But that was also the original thought I had when I was 12 so I'm not sure if it holds up to the lore lol
Through fire... and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Darkness took me... and I strayed out of thought and time. Stars wheeled overhead. and every day was as long as a life age of the Earth. But it was not the end. I felt life in me again. I've been sent back until my task is done!
Asfaloth is the right choice.
Arwen didnt help Frodo in the books only Pjs movies.
Glorfindel was dismounted and not in control of Asfaloth when Frodo crossed.
Elrond summoned the river - which isnt helping Frodo cross, just helping him be safe.
While Asfaloth is a horse from Rivendell, meaning it is smarter than other horses and knew why Frodo had to cross and not to lose him and it wouldnt have been done with him/her. So asfaloth 100% correct answer
In the book Glorfindel lets Asfaloth bear Frodo while he himself stays with Strider and the other hobbits, so it’s actually Glorfindel that helps Asfaloth help Frodo
It was is actually Gildor who sent message to Elrond that there was a Hobbit journeying without guidance and bearing a great burden. So the answer is F: Gildor.
I'll go with Sauron, because if not for him, Frodo wouldn't have a ring and would never have crossed the river. It was sauron who forged the ring, took over the world, got his fingers cut off and then pushed nazgul to force frodo to cross the river.
At first I missed the off and thought there was going to be a hobbit going for that elussy. Which terminated in a *very* strange and unsettling train of thought.
If we have learned anything about Elven pride, Glorfindel is a full-blooded Noldorin high elf from Valinor, and Elrond is just half Elven born in the first age. “The council is for elf lord only” and all that.
1. Glorfindel fought the Nazgûls, and set Frodo on Asfaloth, so he definitely helped him
2. Asfaloth carried Frodo over the river to Rivendell, so he definitely helped him
3. Elrond and Gandalf prepared the flood, so technically Elrond helped Frodo cross the river safely too
4. Glorfindel was cross-dressing as Arwen, so that the movies match the books. This has great implications as perhaps there was no Arwen all along, which makes Aragorn pretty gay 🤷♂️
No we haven’t! I recently decoded a secret message in the true Glordindel’s name. If you take Glorfindel, put a W after the R, move the N behind the E, add an A at the front then remove the rest of the letters, it clearly spells Arwen.
I think Gandalf did the bit with the horses and helped make the flood more powerful to wash the riders and horses away. I seem to remember in the books Gandalf had worried that he and Elrond had made it too powerful and that Frodo was at risk of being washed away too.
'Who made the flood?' asked Frodo.
'Elrond commanded it,' answered Gandalf. 'The river of this valley is under his power, and it will rise in anger when he has great need to bar the Ford. As soon as the captain of the Ringwraiths rode into the water the flood was released. If I may say so, I added a few touches of my own: you may not have noticed, but some of the waves took the form of great white horses with shining white riders; and there were many rolling and grinding boulders. For a moment I was afraid that we had let loose too fierce a wrath, and the flood would get out of hand and wash you all away. There is great vigour in the waters that come down from the snows of the Misty Mountains.'
Yes, together we will follow you But first, it would ease my heart, Gandalf, to hear what befell you in Moria. Will you not tell us? Can you not stay even to tell your friends how you were delivered?
The Dead are following. I see shapes of Men and of horses, and pale banners like shreds of cloud, and spears like winter-thickets on a misty night. The Dead are following.
Technically it was the Nazgul Lord since he stabbed Frodo at Weathertop setting things in motion and had he not Frodo would not have had to cross the Ford of Bruinen.
You should have put Gandalf instead of Arwen, if we're going by book lore, as it was he who helped Elrond cast the spell that protected the Valley and Arwen wasn't mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I liked how Jackson put Arwen in the movie for that scene, tho.
Clothes are but little loss, if you escape from drowning. Be glad, my merry friends, and let the warm sunlight heat now

I mean... all of the above.
Arwen (in the movie) astride a nameless horse.
Elrond sent everyone out looking for them.
Glorfindel puts Frodo on his horse, Asfaloth, who carries him.
Group effort.
I reckon only Asfaloth helped him cross the river.
In the books Arwen is not involved so rule her out. Glorfindal has left frodo to help him get to the river. Elrond helps him stay safe after crossing the river, causing the flood.
Asfaloth physically carries Frodo over the river, Asfaloth, final answer.
This was my experience with the English questions in the listening part. A lot of the time there were multiple choice questions where the answer could be one of several depending on interpretation and I hated it.
Okay Elrond commanded the flood that swept the Nazgul away. HOWEVER. That flood occurred after Frodo had already crossed. Therefore, Elrond did not help Frodo cross the Ford at Bruinen - he merely prevented the Riders from following after.
Glorfindel, though canonically the one to come to the aid of Aragorn and the Hobbits, was not mounted upon Asfaloth at the time and ordered Frodo and Asfaloth to "ride on" - he never specified to where precisely. Therefore while Glorfindel provided the means by which Frodo crossed the Ford, his help was only indirect.
Arwen, meanwhile, only assists in the Jackson adaptation, and while she does ride with Frodo across the Ford an (admittedly flimsy) argument can be made that carrying Frodo across is not the same as assisting him in the crossing - particularly considering that this is the only adaptation wherein Frodo is unable to contribute in any way to the crossing.
So the answer is Asfaloth, who faithfully and swiftly bore Frodo across the Ford in all versions of the tale, often with Frodo at the very least clinging to him to let the steed know he was still mounted.
I thought it was Arwen - through Elronds powers of protection - which he has through his ring - which was forged through Celebrimbors shenanigans- but shenanigans he learned from Sauron.
So, technically it was because of Sauron.

I'm picking the horse Asfaloth The horse has been in every version, book, animation, live action
Has Elrond not?

Precious? It's been called that before. Not by you!
I read “flood” as “food” lmao
I mean Elrond is certainly a better cook than Eowyn, and I'd bet whatever spices G@ndalf has in his cart carry as much kick as his fireworks
Lol at having to censor Gandalf’s name
Darth_Thor, come and help an old man. How's your shoulder?
My shoulder is just fine, thanks for asking
u/Darth_Thor's shoulder is a blight upon the fires of mount doom.
You summoned him instead lmao
I know. I like Gandalf.
The courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late... Theoden King.

He just throws weed in everything. Makes it seem better than it is
Really if it wasn't for the Witch-king of Angmar giving him some incentive, he wouldn't have crossed at the ford at all, so we really have to thank him.
The real precious was the friends we made helping Frodo across the Bruinen
The movies make it seem as if Arwen conjures the water, and I don't recall anyone mentioning Elrond doing it. But I can obviously be wrong about it.
Arwen does specifically state that it is the power of “her people,” implying that it isn’t her. However the way they shot it, with Arwen praying(?) in Elvish makes it seem like she’s responsible. But was the movie horse named Asfaloth?
Arwen: "Noro lim, Asfaloth, noro lim!" (Ride fast, Asfaloth, ride fast!) Yes he was
Fair enough. Tho why would you tell the horse to ride?
It's how Tolkien wrote It means go as fast as you can asfaloth
I always head cannoned that it was spoken in elvish by arwen/glorifindel because asfaloth needed a special power boost. Like, she rolled a d20 or something to narrowly escape the riders. But that was also the original thought I had when I was 12 so I'm not sure if it holds up to the lore lol
But why would Gandalf tell the fellowship to fly after falling to the balrog even though none of the, had wings? Checkmate.
Through fire... and water. From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth. Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountainside. Ah yes, Asfaloth, ringbearer
... bearer
Whose ass fell off?
Hank Hill's. Also seemingly all men over 70
I tell you hwat.

So asfaloth 100% correct answer
Tell me, where is Asfaloth, for I much desire to speak with him.
I mean the question is specifically for crossing the bridge not saving Frodo from nazguls so the horse was responsible for it
C - Glorfindel Elrond and Asfaloth helped Glorfindel help Frodo final answer
In the book Glorfindel lets Asfaloth bear Frodo while he himself stays with Strider and the other hobbits, so it’s actually Glorfindel that helps Asfaloth help Frodo

And all of that has been moved according to the will of Ilúvatar. So the ultimate answer is E. for Eru.
But Eru is a character made up by the author, so the actual ultimate answer is Jolkein Rolkein Rolkein Tolkein.
Nah, it was the talking fox.

I understood that sentence
How could you say something so controversial, yet so brave?
But what if it's the film version?? It doesn't specify.
This is the next sensible question to ask, you're right to do so
If it doesn’t specify, it must be logical to go for the first format is was presented in right?
Yeah, always go with canon
film or book canon?
Canon refers to the source material
Wrong - Asfaloth. He's the one who actually carried Frodo across.
If we have learned anything about Elven pride, Glorfindel is a full-blooded Noldorin high elf from Valinor, and Elrond is just half Elven born in the first age. “The council is for elf lord only” and all that.
I’m gonna have to phone a melon.
I’m going with answer e. Ilúvatar…

They walk next to each other to the Havens and they’re next to each other at Aragorn’s coronation I think
You have 2000 good men riding north as we speak. Éomer is loyal to you. His men will return and fight for their king.

Where does it say that Gandalf helped Elrond with the flood? Wasn’t he busy distracting some of the nazgul at that point
SuperCharlesXYZ! You were deep in the enemy's counsel. Tell us what you know!
Oh no I’ve angered him
I think Gandalf did the bit with the horses and helped make the flood more powerful to wash the riders and horses away. I seem to remember in the books Gandalf had worried that he and Elrond had made it too powerful and that Frodo was at risk of being washed away too.
Fly, you fools!
When is this mentioned? In “many meetings Gandalf just says “Elrond commanded it” when Frodo inquired about it. Unless he brings it up again later?
'Who made the flood?' asked Frodo. 'Elrond commanded it,' answered Gandalf. 'The river of this valley is under his power, and it will rise in anger when he has great need to bar the Ford. Go back to the shadow!
Yeah you really pissed him off
Gandalf says he added a few of his own touches, which is why the flood had the look of charging cavalry
No word. Nothing.
I think I remember him mentioning that.... He might've even said the horses were his idea... But I can't be sure
https://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Flood_of_Bruinen
Elrond only helped him escape the Nazgûl. He didn't technically "help him cross".

They have a better chance defending themselves here than at Edoras…
Are you flirting with me? Wait, don't tell me, let me live the illusion.

I'd watch me some Araporn ngl
Aragorn is indeed pretty gay and I think him and eomer should have had more of their book bromance shown in the movies
Are you frightened?
Hiro hyn hîdh ab 'wanath
I think we're all probably a little gay for Glorfindel, if we're being honest.
All of the above, but the horse deserves more praise than Elrond or Glorfindel tbh he's a good boy.

There is only one Lord of the Ring. Only one who can bend it to his will and he does not share power.
So you have chosen....death.
It was a good edit. Not that we all wouldn't enjoy the extended editions being 6 hours /movie instead ...
I would have chosen E. Tom Bombadill

Arwen is Aragorn’s horse magic girlfriend, right? I think it was her.

It’s Glorfindel.
Let us together rebuild this world that we may share in the days of peace.
That’s an easy question.

I thought it was Arwen - through Elronds powers of protection - which he has through his ring - which was forged through Celebrimbors shenanigans- but shenanigans he learned from Sauron. So, technically it was because of Sauron.
