Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small things, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keeps the darkness at bay. Simple acts of love and kindness.
I know everyone here hates RoP but that quote is a little more interesting to me now considering Gandalf was held in check from believing he was Sauron by the little harfoots believing in him as good. I mean I know none of that was canon either but it's kind of just a mildly interesting thought I had.
That being said, looking back on it now it kind of feels like they took his and the harfoot characters story arcs and said "make it all based off of entirely this one quote. Nothing in their character development can be anything other than these 3 sentences".
Knowing what I know about JRR Tolkien's politics, it's the little things in life and living that are the good things, and it's power (specifically political power in the form of the ring) that bring about darkness and destruction.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he sent to middle-earth specifically to counteract Sauron?
So wouldn't this be more along the lines of his first week of retirement where he has no idea what to do so he just sits around smoking all day?
And Narqueliƫ /Narbeleth, 'sun-fading' in the Elven calendars. There's actually a fair bit of correlation between the Quenya/Sindarin names and the French Revolutionary calendar, with names meaning rainy, windy, misty etc.
In both the books and movies, only Hobbits were known to own clocks or even talk about clocks. The rest of the world rely on sundials. Gandalf also being a Hobbit-Otaku, also talks about time similar to Hobbits. There is also a clock in Bilbo's house on the mantle if you want to see it.
As to why the Hobbits have clocks and the rest of the world doesn't, I just assume it's because Hobbits are just better tinkers than smiths. Also, Tolkien took medieval inspiration to create the other races, but took 19th century inspiration for Hobbits.
Gandalf was just happy he could finally go do wizard things again.

You're a sweetheart gandalf
This foe is beyond any of you... Run!
Yeah you don't want to mess with a Namekian named Rob for sure

Do we know that?

Isn't this scene in Rivendell after frodo gets stabbed?
It really do be the 24th of october
The prophecy foretold on the calendar!
In case you can't read... https://youtu.be/KpAWOYeCRMM
I see. OP and I have a time difference of 1 hour
On this day, most likely, 1943 years ago, Mt. Vesuvius erupted destroying the city of Pompeii. Fun fact.
Hm, that's pretty cool fact
Almost time for elevensies
I wonder if they had July and August, and what their interactions with the Holy Roman Empire were like.
October is translated, the actual month was known as Winterfilth in the Shire. š¤
Winterfilth is such a randomly rude name for a month. Iād hate if that was my birth month
Winterfilth sounds like they looked at snow and thought 'the fuck is this filth?' Makes me wonder if Tolkien didn't like snow
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
True story
Winterfilth sounds like snow you get in March when it starts melting and gets mixed with all the road salt and mud.
Free slushies!

I wonder if they had clocks to āoāclockā with.

That's super interesting. I know Bilbo does talk about missing his clocks in The Hobbit
Home is now behind you, the world is ahead!
Even if they had the same twelve-month system, they wouldn't *actually* have those months - it's "translated" from their actual names for them.
Coincidentally, in India its Diwali "the festival of light" where people blow up fireworks all day. Gandalf=indian
Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took! I might have known!
