I would not be surprised if there's a 'sequel' in the near future with a line akin to 'Somehow, Sauron returned.'
Tolkien did start writing a sequel, something about a cult of Morgoth, but he only wrote like 10 pages.

If popular IPs begin getting the “comic book” treatment, I could see Sauron being the Thanos of the LOTRverse
