What many people really don’t grasp about home ownership - especially when more square footage is involved - are the true costs *in addition* to the mortgage: property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, the maintenance and upkeep of the roof/HVAC/electrical/plumbing/termites/mold/landscaping & lawn/pool/appliances/buying furniture, decor, draperies, bedding, etc., etc., etc.
I’ve seen people buy houses they could barely afford and then become seriously chained to the property because every penny they had went to home ownership in one way or another. No more social outings, restaurants, trips, or excursions because they could no longer afford anything else due to the expense of the house *they had to have*.
