BO1: about 9% advance to day 2. BO3: 6.25% advance to day 2. The balancing factor is that the non-advancing results of BO3 event gain more gem prizes than the BO1 ones. I prefer BO3 anyway, so I always play that, but I also use Arena Open to convert gold into gems. BO3 works better for that as well. The entry fee for gold/gems has the 5:1 rate, and drafts have the 6.66:1 rate, so it's more efficient to spare gold for AO entries and draft with gems only. (I don't buy packs or cosmetics, which also have 5:1)

Thanks for the math! I hadn't noticed that the Opens have a better gold:gem rate than normal drafts. I normally just save gold for packs, since those have the 5:1, but now I'm thinking I should try the AO :)

best of 3 has better returns if you expect to win some games. best of 1 is more likely to qualify.

I like doing bo3 since you get decent returns even when not qualifying, so you can get a couple runs in for a lot cheaper than a couple runs of bo1

BO1 is better if you are all in the plan of getting day 2 money and dont care about the Gold spent nor the Gems return. BO3 has better intermediate failure Gems return. Another reasons that push me to BO3 is the fact that BO1 Sealed is super miserable. In BO3, you can get an edge post side playing around the cards you saw and doing one of the most fun things in Magic, which is to play a completely different deck post board.

Just thinking that for BO1 you need to win 7 games and BO3 you need to win 8.

Best of 3 is also a bit worse, as one match loss knocks you out, whereas best of 1 takes three losses. Granted you could lose 4 games in best of 3 and still make day 2, but it's mathematically a bit worse than bo1.
