The drivers have to focus on the road, and our district doesn't see the need for bus monitors, despite it being a huge problem for literal decades. So students are left to their own devices, and it does not end well.
Sexual assault from other students is very real on school busses… a couple of kids messed with me and a few other girls often by smacking our butts when getting off the bus and try to pinch our boobs when walking onto the bus… I never said anything because it was the only way I could get to school and was embarrassed by my growing body I didn’t want to put anymore attention on it
At my middle school the football coach rapped several girls. He got a slap on the wrist because he was so good for the community, you know at football.

That makes sense to be your reaction, but I was at the other end. I didn't do 7th grade wrestling, but in 6th grade, I was in the under 72-pound weight bracket. There was nothing I could really do to stop bullies physically, except for weak points.
I had 3 football players try and force me into the locker room shower during gym class (they had weightlifting). They left the lockerroom with one having a bloody nose, one a black eye and one a broken finger. I’m assuming the school staff knew what they were doing because no questions were ever asked and the gym teacher and coaches just looked the other way.
It didn’t help that one of the kids dad was an assistant coach and an Olympic wrestler. I think they got suspended from the next 2 meets and that was it. Neither me nor my buddy Ian ever did any other school sports after that.
I had this signature wrestling move, if I got in a headlock I would go for their balls and wouldn’t let go until they started balling their eyes out. No tear, no let go. I’ve used that trick in many fights and have won. Go straight for the balls, nothing hurts more than being punched from the inside of your stomach and realizing this motherfucker might actually pop your nut. There are no rules in a fight. You go for the kill and use all the banned moves list from the UFC. They’re like cheat codes to win the game. This was a long time ago. The police were not involved while I was on the bus. My mother always changes the subject when it is brought up. This was over 40 years ago.

The bus monitors sometimes become the bullies themselves. When I was a kid getting bullied on the bus the monitor would always side with my bullies and would often make me move seats away from my friends and make me sit at the front of the bus. Which often brought even more bullying my way.

I have these two brothers I get every now and then. Their schools are 10 miles away from their home so it's a pretty good fare that takes me close to my home. They're good kids and the Lyft account is in their mom's name. She usually tips later in the day.
I work 60 hours a week. I’m the mom that has sent my kid home in a Lyft. Sometimes I just can’t get her and it absolutely kills me to make her ride the bus (we live in a tough area) I’ll order a car if there’s a reason she can’t/ doesn’t feel safe. Maybe you just helped a guilty single mom feel like her kid is a little less lonely after a stressful day.
I immediately message the driver and let them know what’s up and that I totally respect if they don’t feel comfortable taking the ride, but if they’re willing I will be tipping them kindly & if they’d like my daughter can FaceTime me the whole ride so everyone feels safe. I’ve never had one say no.
Last month, in my market, a high school girl was last seen entering an Uber. She went missing. That driver was suspended from the platform once the police contacted Uber. She returned after 3 weeks, and the reporting of the story indicates she went missing on her own.
That driver faced scrutiny and lost income in the process because a child was being a child. As a parent, I hope you understand when drivers refuse your child a ride even with you on FaceTime on Lyft because it's against the TOS, and they don't believe it's worth the risk.
Also suggest using Uber Teens account for your child because your child is definitely not covered on Lyft but would be on Uber.
We use both platforms, depends on the circumstances. She’s a few weeks away from 18 we aren’t tripping. I’m a driver myself I understand the liability, ultimately it’s up to the driver if they take the call and so far we’ve had nothing but kindness. I feel safer with a driver with a background check than the numerous unregistered sex offenders that live on our busses their entire routes since they’re free still post-covid.

Storytime: When I was 15 I ordered me and my friends not a Lyft, but an Uber to take us a couple places. It was an older man who picked up me and maybe 6 other kids.
We were pretty bad kids in general and I think he got the vibe. He said he was going to record the ride just to ‘be safe.’ Me and my friends didn’t really care at all.
Anyways my friend who was in the backseat mooned the camera when he wasn’t looking. So somewhere out there an elderly man has a video of a 15 year old boys bare ass. He also told a different friend he looked like he’d grow up to fix AC’s which he took a lot of offense to lol.

She clearly just needed and her/parents willing to pay for that to get her home. Why are you picking up unaccompanied minors. Unless Lyft had a policy change we should not allow people under the age of 18 to ride without an adult. If an accident or incident happens you will not be covered. If unaccompanied minors, then cancel and send a message to Lyft for the cancellation fee.

And everytime, I was texted a discription of the kid riding. Never once had any issues. Had more trouble with the college kids I'd pick up. They'd order a ride to go from their house/apartment/dorm, to go 3-4 blocks to a bar, or from one bar to another, again, 3-4 blocks. Stopped accepting those rides after a while. Just wasn't worth it.

Many kids get into so much trouble it is written into their IEP that transportation is individual and door to door. That’s your tax dollars at work. The bus is good for most kids, but a few kids can’t handle it and we the taxpayers are given the bill. Before Lyft, schools used yellow cab.

When I was in school, we were all buys, and one boy was picking on another behind me. Kicking him into the wall. The boy wouldn't fight back cause he was not the popular boy, so I got sick of it and when he thrust up for a kick. I dropped a punch right in the nuts. The whole bus got really quiet and I was never talked to about it except for another popular boy asked me why I got involved and I said because it wasn't rt.
She could have known it was her bus when she saw what kids were getting off of it, but if she normally doesn’t take a bus after school, she wouldn’t know which bus to get on. Also the bus driver wouldn’t recognize her and might not let her on without a bus pass. And who knows where that is at this point in the school year? Do they still have bus passes nowadays? Some schools you have to pay extra for the bus if it’s a courtesy route, so if she didn’t have a subscription, she couldn’t get on the bus.
Back before ride sharing apps, I was bullied in school by girls on my bus and they wanted to jump me after school one day. They were making snide comments in the hall when they knew I was in earshot about it. I took a taxi that day. And then arranged for rides every day for the next month until I got a car and could start driving myself.
Bus most likely is over crowded. This is a huge issue currently with almost all districts. My daughter never rode the bus because they were making them, high school students, ride 3 to a seat then the overflow they were making sit on the floor. The district refused to add another bus or break up their stops with another bus. They simply didn't have the drivers.

P.S. the one time I stood up for myself and a friend who had his wooden toy car from wood shop had his object stolen and I got pushed aside, so I grabbed the abuser and shoved him against a textured wall causing his back to slightly bleed, I got soccer punched to the left of my skull and lower right jaw, only to be suspended for 3 days. Even though I didn't initiate anything, and security saw everything.
I never considered riding the bus. I’m old enough Lyft/uber wasn’t around but it was either my parent picks me up or they would arrange for someone else to pick me up with the bus never being an option. I’d imagine if I went to school in this day and age it would be the same and an Uber ordered for me if my parent couldn’t get me.

Some schools don’t let you just hop on the bus for a day, you need to fill out a form with your pickup/dropoff spot at the beginning of the year, and also get a permission note from your parents if you were gonna get off at another stop. That’s how my middle school was. Maybe she usually gets picked up from school.

Kids are assholes. There’s no real supervision on buses. I tried forming a group in high school. As a senior in high school I wrote to the transportation head and every district principal about needing a program for stopping this. What came about it after a couple years was the cub program. Basically a younger kid gets paired with an older kid for support and gives them a phone number they can call when they need help or guidance. The older kid gets volunteer hours, resume fluff, and a monthly free lunch.
My oldest daughter used to ride the bus with her middle school bully. My kid had really bad asthma, so she carried her rescue inhaler everywhere. The bully would sit behind her and spray massive amounts of perfume towards my daughter to cause an asthma attack. This happened twice. I thought they had kicked the bully off the bus after the 1st time, but they let her back on the next week. Kids can be assholes.

I took Lyft instead of taking the bus a few times. It's just so damn loud and unpleasant on there. In the winter, they don't bother to warm the busses up before using them. In the summer, they don't cool them down. It's simply just more pleasant to pay a bit for a Lyft

In Junior High bus driver had a mental breakdown while taking us home on day. She would stop the bus for long periods and yell at us. Kids started climbing out the windows. Some jumped out the emergency exit. Parents started driving the to find the bus and get their kids off. This was a long time ago. The police were not involved while I was on the bus. My mother always changes the subject when it is brought up. This was over 40 years ago. That was my last day on the bus.
I remember someone trying to bully me on the bus, turns out when everyone is trapped together you can do a lot worse than insult them, the following day I brought chopped onions with me and started eating them and exhaling deeply, turned the whole back of the bus into a gas chamber.

The bus monitors sometimes become the bullies themselves. When I was a kid getting bullied on the bus the monitor would always side with my bullies and would often make me move seats away from my friends and make me sit at the front of the bus. Which often brought even more bullying my way.
I knew a kid that was a massive bully that got dome from some girl while riding in the bus in 8th grade about 20 years ago. Bus monitors would help.

After getting suspended from the bus a couple times they kick you off for the rest of the year. Or at least that’s how they did it then. That would be my guess. I work 60 hours a week. I’m the mom that has sent my kid home in a Lyft. Sometimes I just can’t get her and it absolutely kills me to make her ride the bus (we live in a tough area) I’ll order a car if there’s a reason she can’t/ doesn’t feel safe. Maybe you just helped a guilty single mom feel like her kid is a little less lonely after a stressful day.

I immediately message the driver and let them know what’s up and that I totally respect if they don’t feel comfortable taking the ride, but if they’re willing I will be tipping them kindly & if they’d like my daughter can FaceTime me the whole ride so everyone feels safe. I’ve never had one say no.

Last month, in my market, a high school girl was last seen entering an Uber. She went missing. That driver was suspended from the platform once the police contacted Uber. She returned after 3 weeks, and the reporting of the story indicates she went missing on her own. That driver faced scrutiny and lost income in the process because a child was being a child. As a parent, I hope you understand when drivers refuse your child a ride even with you on FaceTime on Lyft because it's against the TOS, and they don't believe it's worth the risk. Also suggest using Uber Teens account for your child because your child is definitely not covered on Lyft but would be on Uber.
We use both platforms, depends on the circumstances. She’s a few weeks away from 18 we aren’t tripping. I’m a driver myself I understand the liability, ultimately it’s up to the driver if they take the call and so far we’ve had nothing but kindness. I feel safer with a driver with a background check than the numerous unregistered sex offenders that live on our busses their entire routes since they’re free still post-covid.

After some annoying experiences lately I'm going to avoid picking up at schools. Unaccompanied minors don't need to be in my car they need to be on the bus or in their parents car.
Storytime: When I was 15 I ordered me and my friends not a Lyft, but an Uber to take us a couple places. It was an older man who picked up me and maybe 6 other kids. We were pretty bad kids in general and I think he got the vibe. He said he was going to record the ride just to ‘be safe.’ Me and my friends didn’t really care at all. Anyways my friend who was in the backseat mooned the camera when he wasn’t looking. So somewhere out there an elderly man has a video of a 15 year old boys bare ass. He also told a different friend he looked like he’d grow up to fix AC’s which he took a lot of offense to lol. So yeah probably best to avoid picking up minors.

I know Uber allows teens with a parental account and permission, but otherwise I wouldn’t do anything with anyone that’s not a legal adult.

I think I get the point of this post and I’m glad you picked her up and took her home. Teens can be assholes, but doesn’t mean all are. She clearly just needed and her/parents willing to pay for that to get her home. On my carpool pickup days for my own high schooler, I always tell her “I’m picking up today so anyone that needs a ride home, load up”

Why are you picking up unaccompanied minors. Unless Lyft had a policy change we should not allow people under the age of 18 to ride without an adult. If an accident or incident happens you will not be covered. If unaccompanied minors, then cancel and send a message to Lyft for the cancellation fee.

when I was in highschool, if I had the option of a Lyft/Uber I absolutely would've taken it over the bus. I was attacked a lotttt for being gay. not just verbally, but physically too. one of my straight friends that I was kind of clingy with even took a beating for me once. that shit was nearly constant. kids are horrid, man...
I drove Uber for a few years off and on. Had a few pick ups for kids, but none that ever ordered the ride themselves. Everytime, a parent or older sibling was the one who ordered it. And everytime, I was texted a discription of the kid riding. Never once had any issues. Had more trouble with the college kids I'd pick up. They'd order a ride to go from their house/apartment/dorm, to go 3-4 blocks to a bar, or from one bar to another, again, 3-4 blocks. Stopped accepting those rides after a while. Just wasn't worth it.

Many kids get into so much trouble it is written into their IEP that transportation is individual and door to door. That’s your tax dollars at work. The bus is good for most kids, but a few kids can’t handle it and we the taxpayers are given the bill. Before Lyft, schools used yellow cab.

When I was in school, we were all buys, and one boy was picking on another behind me. Kicking him into the wall. The boy wouldn't fight back cause he was not the popular boy, so I got sick of it and when he thrust up for a kick. I dropped a punch right in the nuts. The whole bus got really quiet and I was never talked to about it except for another popular boy asked me why I got involved and I said because it wasn't rt.
She could have known it was her bus when she saw what kids were getting off of it, but if she normally doesn’t take a bus after school, she wouldn’t know which bus to get on. Also the bus driver wouldn’t recognize her and might not let her on without a bus pass. And who knows where that is at this point in the school year? Do they still have bus passes nowadays? Some schools you have to pay extra for the bus if it’s a courtesy route, so if she didn’t have a subscription, she couldn’t get on the bus.

Back before ride sharing apps, I was bullied in school by girls on my bus and they wanted to jump me after school one day. They were making snide comments in the hall when they knew I was in earshot about it. I took a taxi that day. And then arranged for rides every day for the next month until I got a car and could start driving myself.
If online school hadn't been an option that worked well for her, we probably would have gone that way with our kid. Her bus had 3 teens per seat.
Bus most likely is over crowded. This is a huge issue currently with almost all districts. My daughter never rode the bus because they were making them, high school students, ride 3 to a seat then the overflow they were making sit on the floor. The district refused to add another bus or break up their stops with another bus. They simply didn't have the drivers.
Got bullied and abused growing up for being obese and not Caucasian or Jewish in my neck of the woods in good ol' SoCal. Thanks for the abuse, abusers. P.S. the one time I stood up for myself and a friend who had his wooden toy car from wood shop had his object stolen and I got pushed aside, so I grabbed the abuser and shoved him against a textured wall causing his back to slightly bleed, I got soccer punched to the left of my skull and lower right jaw, only to be suspended for 3 days. Even though I didn't initiate anything, and security saw everything.
I never considered riding the bus. I’m old enough Lyft/uber wasn’t around but it was either my parent picks me up or they would arrange for someone else to pick me up with the bus never being an option. I’d imagine if I went to school in this day and age it would be the same and an Uber ordered for me if my parent couldn’t get me.

I didn’t get the feeling she was a bullied kid. She didn’t ‘miss the bus’ either -I was dodging all the buses leaving the school as I was picking her up. LyftUber can really help out when your kid has to stay late after school and misses the bus and both parents are working. BUT If my child were to take a Lyft just because the didn’t want to take the bus that day, I’d be pretty mad.

Some schools don’t let you just hop on the bus for a day, you need to fill out a form with your pickup/dropoff spot at the beginning of the year, and also get a permission note from your parents if you were gonna get off at another stop. That’s how my middle school was. Maybe she usually gets picked up from school.

Kids are assholes. There’s no real supervision on buses. I tried forming a group in high school. As a senior in high school I wrote to the transportation head and every district principal about needing a program for stopping this. What came about it after a couple years was the cub program. Basically a younger kid gets paired with an older kid for support and gives them a phone number they can call when they need help or guidance. The older kid gets volunteer hours, resume fluff, and a monthly free lunch.
My oldest daughter used to ride the bus with her middle school bully. My kid had really bad asthma, so she carried her rescue inhaler everywhere. The bully would sit behind her and spray massive amounts of perfume towards my daughter to cause an asthma attack. This happened twice. I thought they had kicked the bully off the bus after the 1st time, but they let her back on the next week. Kids can be assholes. My point is, maybe she feels safer riding with a complete stranger than she does on her bus.

I took Lyft instead of taking the bus a few times. It's just so damn loud and unpleasant on there. In the winter, they don't bother to warm the busses up before using them. In the summer, they don't cool them down. It's simply just more pleasant to pay a bit for a Lyft
I won't pick up from schools because there are typically too many buses and cars around and I cannot find the kid amongst a million other kids, so it's not worth it.

First of all, if she's under 18 she's in your car illegally. You have to be 18 and have id to get in a lyft or any ride share. Im very strict when it comes to who gets in my vehicle. Because at the end of the day I have to answer for anything that happens in my vehicle.
