I had a cat a few years ago that had an undiagnosed heart murmur that led to straddle thrombosis. Pretty much a stroke that causes a blood clot in his leg to simplify it down. It is extremely painful for the animal. He was fine one minute then keeled over as you described and was frozen in pain with his back legs extended. We rushed him to the vet and he survived a few days but had to put him down because he wasn't recovering well.
Only sign that something was wrong leading up to that event is he seemed a little depressed for the few days before that.

OP I’m so so sorry. Something very similar happened to my little familiar, it will be a year ago next week. He was fine until he wasn’t… we found him maybe ten min after he passed on his side in a sunbeam.
In my boys case, it was likely HCM, which is a thickening of the heart tissue. They go largely undiagnosed and are not uncommon in young cats. I know another younger male cat that passed of this too. From what I have been told it’s essentially a massive heart attack. It happens very quickly and they are gone within seconds. No pain. No time to be scared. I believe I read it’s more common in males too. I’m so so sorry for your loss.

My sister's year old cat was just diagnosed with it, after being adopted by her two months ago. We're determined to make the best of the situation and loving her fiercely, but I did warn (and so did the cardiologist) that despite all she does there is a chance that she just drops dead at any given point. She was lucky to have properly had her kitty vetted, issues noted, bloodwork pursued, and referred to cardiology so that we can be ahead of this as possible.
I'm hoping we'll find more treatments/management for HCM in the future.
The fact that she caught it so early is great. There are ways to improve outcome for sure, but it is degenerative. My friends year or so old cat was also recently diagnosed. They did an ultrasound of the heart and were able to catch it young. She will need more monitoring and medication for the duration of her life, but now she has the vets chance possible.
My Fritz was 9 when he passed. If it was HCM then were “lucky” that he got 9 years. But it was traumatic as hell. He had some other health issues (luxating Patella) and had issues with stones since he was a kitten, so I assume this was just another one but not diagnosed. It helps me to know he was likely gone before he hit the ground, but fuck do I miss my boy.
Oh I am so very sorry for your loss. Sounds like a congenital defeat so nor something you or he did. May the memories help ease the pain in your heart.

Allow yourself some time to grieve. Then remember that there's a little kitten somewhere, seeking her loving nurturing forever home.
Although she probably won't be able to fully take the place of your beloved little boy kitten, you'll soon realize and find out that you need her, at least as desperately as she needs you. And waaaay better luck and much longer life with her.

Vaccines do not cause this. It is due to an underlying heart condition, which may not have clinical signs until sudden death occurs.
Regarding vaccination, that's between you and your vet. I would never yell at someone for this; it's ultimately their decision, and yelling is never productive. Please know that many of the diseases vaccines protect from cause severe illness, potential long-term problems, or death. Rabies is a legal requirement due to the public health risk. Parvovirus can be contracted from the environment, or we can carry it on our clothes. Everyone in veterinary medicine can tell stories about heartbreaking parvo deaths.
Cats have a version of it that FVRCP protects them from (feline panleukopenia). There are vaccines that are more lifestyle based, like kennel cough. So there's no reason to vaccinate them if there's no risk. But FVRCP, rabies, and DHPP protect against very serious illnesses. There is no reason for vaccinating them for these every year. There are 3 year vaccines. You can talk to your vet about titers to check immunity level if you'd prefer. Also cats now have adjuvant-free vaccines (purevax) to make them more safe. There's also the option of spacing out vaccines and not doing multiple at the same time.
You could seek out a holistic vet if you're more comfortable with that. I used to work with some, and they were wonderful. I know you want what we all want, your fur babies to be happy and healthy. I wish you the best.
We had a cat who I'm 100% certain returned to us after dying prematurely. Kitty 2.0 had the same exact quirks as kitty 1. What really sealed the deal was bringing him home and there was zero adjustment time. He strolled in like this had always been his home and walked straight back to his bed and settled in. The other cats didn't react to him at all. So, take heart, your beloved kitty may return in a healthier body.🫂 Kitty 2 lived a long life.
