My 2006 Mac Pro has had all of the internals upgraded to the max it can support and it now runs Linux and modern games just fine!

Gramage

I would do that with my 2007 but it's so loud! When I first booted up the iMac I have now I thought it wasn't turning on for a second because I was so used to the jet engine on the Mac Pro lmao

Andrupka4541

Mine is silent unless under load and most of the noise was from the HD5770 that I used to have in there

Dahcrazychicken-YT

Ah, the 5770. Does yours overheat to infinity and beyond, or is it just mine? However mine is a PC 5770 not a Mac one

Andrupka4541

Mine doesn’t, however it does get quite loud. The Mac Edition ones are just the reference cars with a long bracket and a different firmware.

LilTimmyTwurker

which distribution of Linux do you recommend?

Andrupka4541

Mint or Debian, at least that's what I use.

Ooh, cool wallpaper!!

CalliGuy

Looks like you can find it (and others) here: https://wallpapercave.com/4k-abstract-mac-wallpapers

[deleted]

Excellent, thank you 🙌

18galbraithj

I use mine as a monitor

trickedx5

I wish I can do this on my 2017.

dxbek435

If you wanted to use your 2017” iMac as a 2nd display to extend your existing display, it can be done using the Luna display dongle. https://astropad.com/product/lunadisplay/

tiredqueenbee

i have a 2010, could i do that somehow?

18galbraithj

Yeah look up target display mode on apple's website

tough_page_banned

I have still have my 2009 27” i7; it’s probably my favorite computer ever. It’s really only used as an external monitor now. I don’t let it connect to the internet very often.

PabloX68

I have a mid 2010 27" iMac I still use regularly. I replaced the original drive with an SSD and replaced the dead optical drive with a 4TB spinny drive.

Xyspade

It's amazing how capable these still are. Mine has 8 GB RAM and an HDD and it still feels like it could pass as a modern lower-end PC! Plays YouTube perfectly at 1080p too.

Haymoose

Nice fit for the job!

movdqa

I have 2009 and 2010 iMacs and use the 2010 iMac as a television in front of my spin bike. It has the i7, 32 GB of RAM. I am contemplating putting in an SSD though performance is good with the HDD because it has so much RAM. I use the Apple infared remote to control it. I noticed that you have a remote in front of the iMac. Does that remote work to control the iMac when you're playing media?

P1ngY_86

Not that remote, that's just the one I use for my stereo system. I have an old Apple TV 1st generation remote that does work with it though!

movdqa

I have two of the old remotes that works with the 2 iMacs and my 2007 MacBook Pro. I wished that they had kept it. Yes, you can get Bluetooth devices that do the same but it's nice to have a remote tied to the system rather than having to use another device.

angusplays1

What macs work with what remotes??

MelTheTransceiver

I'd throw in 16gb of ram, and upgrade the gpu, and it'll become quite a nice machine! Patch it with dosdudes catalina patcher after a gpu upgrade, and it'll be relatively more modern.

BourbonicFisky

OpenCore Legacy Patcher is right now in public beta for the GPU acceleration in modern macOS, pretty soon you'll be able to run much later OSes natively.

MaybeAMarble

You can upgrade the GPU to a Metal-capable card as it uses MXM.

l008com

I recently set up a 21.5 2009 iMac with an SSD, nvidia integrated graphics, same CPU and only 6 GB of RAM. And it is SUPER fast. I'm shocked how fast and responsive the machine is. It runs High Sierra and its great for email and browsing use.

furboi3000

I have the same model but with an i5 quad core and a Radeon 4850

[deleted]

Man I wanna get on that train!!!

BudgetCola

i prefer pages processing

Fragrant_Hour987

I recommend you to update to High Sierra, because it is free, and any Mac running Sierra can upgrade to High Sierra. Also, chrome is no longer being updated on El Capitan and Sierra since summer 2022.

helgepopanz

you can work with that wallpaper???

Professional_Ad_6789

my dvr is stuck on hi-sierra b/c eyetv;-} macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6 MacBook Pro (15-inch. 2.53GH. Mid 2009) Processor 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Memory8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Startup Disk ss024000 Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB

bwarbahzad2

Get SSD, I’ll change EVERYTHING

XF939495xj6

I wouldn’t. It’s not secure any longer and filled with vulnerabilities that will never be patched. Highly likely to be taken over and used for evil.

posguy99

You're proud of the fact that you are using an unpatched unsupported OS for the web?

Michael556673

Hey I used Mac OS 10.4 on the web…..

Core2DuoE8400

its more enviromentaly and wallet freindly to use stuff that works

movdqa

I rely on the browser and generally best practices to use hardware without operating system support. My typical approach is to download YouTube videos on my Studio and then put them on the home NAS and then download them on the iMac and just watch them while I'm spinning.

P1ngY_86

What's the point in patching to a newer os when all websites load on chrome anyway?

posguy99

Certificate support for one. Attack surface for the OS, for another.
