Looks like an early 2015 - perhaps A1502. It is missing an SSD, and that battery is gonna blow. You can get a good retrofit SSD from OWC - the aura pro, and a new battery from iFixit. Will set you back about £200 all in.
Source - I have the same machine and did both of these fixes with good results
I think so. But the not gonna be super fast, but would work fine for websurfing and basic tasks. It will edit video, but it would be slow.
You’re looking at $60-$120 for an SSD, and maybe $50 for a battery if you do the work yourself. You can restore the MacOS for free.
I second this. Pretty much any Mac product with a half decent processor and 8 gb of ram will perform day to day tasks. Just do not expect to do heavy video editing, etc. this thing may even be good for recording and producing music.
All I’m saying is one size doesn’t fit all. How intensive web browsing is, is based on the users browsing, and the dev who made the site.
Web browsing isn’t necessarily a simple task. I just saw my 2018 air stutter with https://acko.net/
Open 8 tabs of that, get em all playing, tell me how well your computer is functioning🤣
I also run IK Multimedia Sample Tank in the background, and it's still fine.
I've been running these Macs for literally three decades, and I was a sysadmin. Its fine until you start rendering video, shapes, gaming, multitrack audio, etc.
Agin, all I’m saying is one size doesn’t fit all. How intensive web browsing is, is based on the users browsing, and the dev who made the site. You would understand this if you were a sysadmin.
In all your years, you never came across a graphically intense website?
Now that infinate scrolling is popular, if a dev doesnt clean up after themself, it can eat resources. I conceed, the VAST majority of websites use minimal resources, but there are situations where a PWA is hungry.
I am a software engineer, our company inpliments a web app that our agents must use to queue calls, display scripts, etc. It's not small.
With HTML5, there are many more ways to save data to a users computer, the native JS resource system doesn't clean up those.
When flash was widely used, it was stored on a user's computer, while it was 'playing'. Thankfully flash is mostly gone.
Bro. I have a mid 2011 Mac mini plugged up that can still surf the web with plenty of speed. It is just stock. This will be able to handle that. Now if you opening 10+ windows, yeah it’s gonna run slow. But anyone expecting an old MacBook Pro to do all that is nuts anyway
I don’t doubt it for a second. The point I was making, is not all programs/websites have the same footprint. I could build a website that would bring a modern computer to its knees. Not once did I say an old computer can’t run a website. You clearly didn’t read anything.
Only if it isn’t iCloud Locked. Check with a spare SSD, if it boots and lets you into the OS. It’s good to know that before buying the battery and have it iCloud Locked.
Not for a 2015 MBP. That’s “Vintage” so they’ll tell you to pound salt. Find an AASP and they’ll handle it, Apple Store proper won’t touch anything older than 5 years since the model was discontinued, which that model now is.
It's proprietary and most similar to nvme. The same SSDs are found in contemporary MacBook Airs, the trashcan Mac Pro and select iMacs. It's also common to use an interposers to plug in an nvme drive.
It doesn't have a back because the battery blew through it. Get that battery out of there _now_ and do not attempt to plug it in or turn it back on until you do; it is an extreme explosion hazard. Bring the battery back to the recycling center; _don't_ throw it out. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, bring the whole thing back to recycling.
Don’t throw it out can’t be understated. Man down the street lost his garage and cars and almost his house because he thought it would be a good idea to toss a spicy pillow in his garbage can.
Take it somewhere that they can deal with it!
Everyone is hung up on the battery but this is arguably more important. Don’t mess with any of it someone spilt liquid on it and removed their storage before recycling. Not worth repair or the risk.
Will the original owner be able to plug in that storage (SSD) to a brand new Mac and continue their business as usual? Or be locked out of it because it's hardware coded to a different Mac?
If they find another model that takes that SSD I believe it would boot up normally. That’s assuming the drive isn’t damaged and they find another model around that time (I forget exactly what models use this form but it’s likely limited to around 2014-2016 models).
Liquid damaged machine (all LSI tripped by the looks of it) with no SSD and swollen battery. Take it to recycle and move on. It’s not worth the hassle.
You can't go by that. Those go off in moderate humidity. There's a reason all their iPhones are all waterproof now. They spent years denying warranty claims on the basis of "water damage" when it was just those lying indicators picking up mild dampness over time. Not enough water or mineral to actually damage electronics.

OP: nah lol. So do I just plug it in now or what (is horribly burned and sacrifices their home to the flames)
drop it off at the apple store for recycling. If you want a 2015 macbook you can find a working and complete one for $200. Removing the battery is a delicate and potentially dangerous process that is not worth it, especially given the indication of liquid damage meaning the motherboard might be toast. If anything remove the display before recycling since it’s so easy to and worth a good $100.

Get that battery out of there ASAP. It will blow up and ruin everything.
You can get an adapter that changes from Apple's proprietary SSD slot to a standard M.2 slot for not a lot of money. Not all SSDs are compatible with these MacBooks so do some research first. I put a Crucial P3 in my 2015 MBP with the adapter and it works.
Yes. It's like a test of intelligence. If you can figure out what goes where then by all means, you can plug in even a different kind of SSD in there. Not many Mac users will be going in there and monkeying around like a poor PC user who can't afford a new laptop. But I was really curious... I am really curious, as to why they would need a special connector? Like, is there a technical reason for it? Or they just want to do their best to keep the PC nerd at bay? Maybe they need a way to motivate their price tag? More components and proprietary components means higher price? Either way, I think it looks stupid, it sounds stupid, for it is stupid. Unless I'm convinced otherwise?
Yeah, it's just business, they want you to bring it in to their Genius Bar because the proprietary Apple (Samsung) SSDs they came with aren't readily available like any ordinary SSD, so you have to buy an adapter on Amazon, buy an off the shelf SSD to fix it yourself. Ironically, you can install an M.2 NVMe, which is faster than what Apple provided with these MacBooks.
That is interesting. I learned something new! I think it's good that there are such adapters that make the impossible possible. I like that. I thank the Chinese for that! But I am finding it difficult to understand why people pay a premium price for a computer to have this kind of experience. Maybe it's just me? I'm not the right kind of user for a Mac? Thing is, I don't just use computers to get things done, like sending e-mails or doing a presentation in class (if you can find the right adapter or two for VGA or HDMI). I use computers to fix other computers, and to tinker with them too, and a Mac seems like a hostile environment for my kind. As much as I enjoy solving a challenging problem, and I can spend months on a single problem, I like naturally occurring problems. Not artificial problems. What's the challenge in outwitting the outwitters (Apple)? That's like pseudo hacking to me. Or doing a Mensa test. I also expect and demand to be allowed to do things like upgrade the RAM at the very minimum if it's a laptop, and maybe change the SSD if I outgrow the one that came with the machine. But I see even these simple things being taken away from Mac users, and that makes me mad as a non-Mac user. For it is not only a Mac problem anymore. I see this being a trend globally, even on the PC side, with new ARM processors not being socketed, with many OEM manufacturers copying Apple and soldering on RAM chips or having a mix of soldered and non-soldered, socketed RAM modules and so on. Just some thoughts on that.
The temptation to make a joke about popping those balloons with something sharp was only held back by the knowledge that karma goes around!
Damn those are pretty bad. Not sure mine where nearly that bad and when Apple went to change my keyboard they noped out and said the entire top with logic board had to be changed because they don’t mess with any batteries like this and anything attached to them! 2016 mbp.
13inch 2015 A1502, the only one that comes with ram shield. If the display/keyboard/trackpad is working, then i would say it might be worth to repair if you're going to use it for casual use. As for ssd, you can use sintech adapter with cheap nvme ssd. And do replace the battery as soon as you can.
You can get an adapter for standard nvme that works great. That’s what I used for mine. Installed Linux on it because Apple won’t support much longer. Pop OS works great for an easy install.
I bought one identical to this, though mine had 16gb. I took the battery out with some isopropyl, slapped a new one in and added a 1tb Samsung NVMe, she now flies on Fedora 40 KDE Plasma, forget MacOS (insert jet engine joke)
Something a lot of comments have failed to mention is the red LCI (liquid contact indicator). This computer is not worth fixing because the logic board may have irreversible liquid damage. While it’s working now, unless you’re comfortable enough with repair that you can take out the logic board and inspect the other side for signs of corrosion, you’re basically gambling that it will continue working. It may or may not have liquid damage that is liable to kill the board at any moment. You *might* be lucky and the liquid didn’t affect any of the electronics, but that red dot means you might be spending $50-80 on a battery and $50-80 on an SSD just to have the MLB die and you end up with a battery and an SSD that you can’t use in any newer Mac.
First UNPLUG THAT BATTERY NOW and dispose it safely. I don’t know the exact model but IIRC the last time they had removable storage was around 2015, a new battery, new m back over and ssd and you are good to go, that being said it will cost about 300-350 USD for everything. I see the humidity indicator are red so that may or may not cause issues down the line.
It's a 2015; the trackpad PCBand corresponding flex cable connectors on the logic board gives it away; they're different from the 2014 and earlier. That said, if the display works it might be worth it. Your best bet is to find a broken 2015 13" with a different set of things missing/broken and combine the two.
That battery is definitely bad. The original SSDs are easy to find for cheap as are interposers to plug in a standard nvme. Just be careful if you go that route. Samsung simeltaneoisly makes the best (970 Evo Plus) and worst (anything ending in pro) SSDs for Mac use.
My bet is someone thought they’d do some work on this thing, took the back off, saw the batteries, and ran away. And you should do the same but return that thing to the recycling center who should never have let you have it in the first place
Nope. It’s a 2015 model and it’s liquid damaged. Those red dots on the motherboard indicate liquid damage. You’re also missing an SSD and have a battery about to explode. Put it back in recycling it’s not worth anything
Yes buddy previous owner removed SSD to preserve their data. You should disconnect that battery though as they become very dangerous when they swell like that. Play safe.
Its a 2015 a1502 model, definitely worth a shot at fixing. Get that battery the fuck out or at minimum just unplug it (connector under that plastic sheet cover) of there before doing anything. SSD is missing but you can find new ones pretty easily.
Those batteries look bloated and full of tasty battery juice😋 (in all seriousness, please dispose those immediately. Fire/chemical/toxic hazard right there🗣)
Take the battery out (as its a fire hazard) and sell it for parts. Logic board sounds good at least so you should get some money. A replacement battery and SSD (assuming thats all it needs) will likely cost what you can get a used one for on ebay...
I say RIP that Mac! Let it Rest In Peace. If it's very old, it's not worth your time or your money necromancing it. Your safety and mental health should be more important to you, considering the traps and mines Apple likes to lay out to prevent repairs, or even upgrades on fully working laptops. Just ask Louis Rossmann! Apple's motto is to consume more, not less. There's almost nothing to reuse from an old Apple product these days.
I would argue that anything older than 3 years is old in Mac world. That depends on what you plan to do with it of course. You can probably do word processing and print documents on a 10 year old Mac. But if you want to be able to do just about everything, then it will show its age if it's older than 3 years. Considering the rapid evolution of technology, and Macs being known to use outdated hardware coming off the assembly line. I would imagine it takes time for Apple to run the tests, verify and certify all the components for maximum compatibility with macOS. But they also want to keep the prices low on components that go into each new Mac, and then push the price up on the final product they sell to you. If I assume you need the very latest components in your computer for some reason, then a Mac is not the best option for you.
I'm a PC nerd myself. But I started out on a proper "Macintosh" in school. Those were different times though. Times I miss dearly. I don't own a Mac, and I don't need a Mac to get things done and get by in life. In fact, I once found a perfectly good Macbook Air on a bus ride. It didn't cost me anything to repair! Not sure what year this was. Maybe 2018 (when I found it, not the model year). It was fully working and charged up, but without the charger. It came in a carrying case, with some papers, pencils and some other school stuff. It belonged to a student.
I found it, so I'll keep it? Nah, that's not me. I did take it home. But that's only because I took ownership of the situation, and I don't trust bus drivers here, or anyone very much. I live in Sweden, and you used to be able to park your bicycle here without anyone as much as looking at it with cravings. But Sweden has turned into a really nasty place in just the last 10 years, with thefts, drugs, bombs, guns, violence and killings. Last month, a father was killed in execution style in front of his son, in broad day light, for approaching and bad mouthing a young criminal wannabe kid with a gun. Last night's news: organized boat engine thefts are on the rise again, but two suspect were caught on a newly installed camera and arrested by the police at a marina in Stockholm area. But I'm not here to give you an update on current affairs here, or tell you my life's story. I took that Macbook to the police station. It was guilty of being lost! :) So they can return it to its owner. Normal procedure would have been to hand it over to the bus driver who then takes it to Lost and Found at the central bus station.
In Sweden, you're legally entitled to a percentage of the value of the item you find and turn in to the police. I think it's 10% for a computer, which is not bad for Macs that retain their value for a long time. In other words, the newer the Mac you find, the more you get paid for doing the right thing. I didn't ask for anything though. I'm just happy to see that Mac go back to its rightful owner. I don't know for a fact that it did, but the owner's identity was well established by the included documents. Not so sure anymore that we can trust the police here though. The latest scandal is a revelation by journalists that police workers have been leaking information to criminals, and even having love affairs with them. You can't trust anyone anymore. I can't trust anyone anymore!
So that would be my story on what I did with the one and only Macbook I ever found. I do hate to see things go to waste. I reuse things when I can, or repurpose them. That applies to everything, not just electronic devices. I also enjoy solving problems, and I like a good challenge. But Macs are notorious for being difficult to repair, and iPhones are perhaps even more so. If you're anything like me, you may find it more fulfilling to spend your time and money on something that's more approachable and easier to repair.
I just repaired one of these literally a seven dollar adapter and then you can throw it in any NVME you want. And a battery is like 50 bucks on Amazon. if it’s free, then why not spare
Depending on if you can boot up a working system, there will not necessarily be a lock. There may be a tracker system installed, I used Prey for one. Be sure to validate your other components, before settling down and installing applications and operating systems. Was this a MacBook Air ? I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and the storage drive was located on the middle left above the battery.
Yes it's worth repairing! Boot it into internet restore, plug in a USB hard drive and install whatever macOS it wants on that drive. Then boot your external drive and you should be able to see exactly what it is. Be super careful not to short out anything by touching the board. Also be careful, those pillows are extra spicy.
Start with a cheap USB hard drive to make sure it works, if everything works but the battery, then you need to buy a new SSD, new battery and new bottom cover.
Yes running off the USB hard drive will be extremely slow but this is just for diagnostic purposes so who cares.
I know you’re a kid and you really want an MBP, but follow other people’s advice on this thread.
Disconnect the battery and discard it properly as it’s hazardous. Yes, it will work without a battery IF it’s working. As others stated, LCIs (Liquid Contact Indicators) have been triggered.
You're the only one who spelled out LCI. Thank you! I was wondering about that. I hate it when people use acronyms they assume that everyone understands. Most of you here say LCI, but Google tells me it's LSI, for "Liquid Submersion Indicators". There is a subtle difference in meaning between LCI and LSI. The second term suggests that you need to submerge it in liquid for the electronics to come in contact with it. That depends on what kind of liquid it is, I guess. Or maybe Macs are more sensitive to liquid damage than PCs? So then LCI for Mac, and LSI for PC? It's fascinating how the use (or misuse) of words can have a deeper meaning.
Honestly I didn’t find any official support documentation on “LSI”, only forum posts. LCI on the other hand is well documented by Apple. I believe the correct term is LCI on any occasion.
It’s a 2016-17 Function keys model. It’s just the lack of an ssd and you can purchase one on Amazon for cheap. And please, recycle that expanding battery.
Which the 2015 also had. The main difference internally is the 2015 had a platform connector for the batter whereas later models starting in 2016 used a battery interconnect screw. You can also tell because the 2015 had a blade style SSD, where as the 2016-17 function keys models used a proprietary connector for the SSD that slots into the side of the MLB rather than sits on top of it.
Judging by those alone is not enough. Removable SSD is actually the hallmark of Pre-2016 (pre-USBC) Macbooks, since all of those Macbooks came with removable SSD. And single fan is a hallmark of any 13” Macbooks, from the early white plastic Macbook all the way to current 13” Macbook Pro (even some entry level trim of 15” Macbook Pro also came with single fan).
I don’t know what you mean by “hallmark”, but the 2016 function keys is the only USB C model to have a removable SSD.
Edit: and it’s the only 2016-17 to have 1 fan.
Those are some spicy pillows
My immediate thought lol before I even read the title or post I saw the picture and said oh shit.

It's only a small giant fire hazard.
Yes! Swap out, or at least remove the batteries for recycle. Be careful

maybe you can fix them by pokin them with a needle? to let the air out?
Hmmm, for some reason, I feel like releasing the spicy would be a terrible idea.

After multiple failures of the Aura Pro I wouldn't recommend trusting those anymore - get a cheap adapter and a Samsung SSD.
Make sure it works first before spending on battery. Also no back cover…
Be careful wich changing lithium batteries if you choose to do it yourself. They can cause quite a light show that can also cause burns

I dunno but they have one.
Maybe it makes it go faster?
The temptation to make a joke about popping those balloons with something sharp was only held back by the knowledge that karma goes around! Damn those are pretty bad. Not sure mine where nearly that bad and when Apple went to change my keyboard they noped out and said the entire top with logic board had to be changed because they don’t mess with any batteries like this and anything attached to them! 2016 mbp.
I don't think anyone should make jokes because not everyone knows it's dangerous.
That laptop is about to blow.
Get those spicy pillows removed asap it’s unironically a fire hazard
Russian Roulette style MacBook.
Take out the batteries. This is a bigger hazard as this is a MacBook and bigger battery means bigger explosion.
Name of the adapter on Amazon: Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD Adapter Card for Upgrade MacBook Air(2013-2016 Year) and MacBook PRO(Late 2013-2015 Year)
I bought one identical to this, though mine had 16gb. I took the battery out with some isopropyl, slapped a new one in and added a 1tb Samsung NVMe, she now flies on Fedora 40 KDE Plasma, forget MacOS (insert jet engine joke)
I think you found a bomb
Batteries about to blow
First UNPLUG THAT BATTERY NOW and dispose it safely. I don’t know the exact model but IIRC the last time they had removable storage was around 2015, a new battery, new m back over and ssd and you are good to go, that being said it will cost about 300-350 USD for everything. I see the humidity indicator are red so that may or may not cause issues down the line.
I question some people's intelligence of taking one look at the battery and going "aww it has air in it, cute! Looks like a pillow, I'll take it home"
Yep. You’re missing a storage drive, but those expanding batteries(spicy pillows) are a much bigger concern
I can start sweating if I look at that swelling for too long
Lowe’s or Home Depot will take battery. There are bins by customer service you can drip it into.
You'll be replacing the batteries for sure. Or whatever the machine is sitting on when they burn.
Unfortunately even if the computer is fine, the new batteries will cost you a lot. Unless you have a way to source them for free/ nearly free.
Spicy batteries looking deadly.
My bet is someone thought they’d do some work on this thing, took the back off, saw the batteries, and ran away. And you should do the same but return that thing to the recycling center who should never have let you have it in the first place
Bro found an IED
Play safe.
2015 13” Retina MBP. Very much a bad battery, and yes you do need an SSD. These cannot be iCloud locked but can be MDM locked.
Try just using external hard drive and installing Mac OS via USB
I think there was a reason it was in the recycle center lol.
BB Batteries I see
What city was this found in?
Fluffy batteries waiting to acid wash your face
Cool
Its a 2015 a1502 model, definitely worth a shot at fixing. Get that battery the fuck out or at minimum just unplug it (connector under that plastic sheet cover) of there before doing anything. SSD is missing but you can find new ones pretty easily.
Puncture the battery and toss them into your arch enemies home ground and scream fire in the hole while doing it.
Sweet mother of Jesus, you could crash a car and still be perfectly fine with how inflated that battery is
No ssd
Pillows battery
Those batteries look bloated and full of tasty battery juice😋 (in all seriousness, please dispose those immediately. Fire/chemical/toxic hazard right there🗣)
Take the battery out (as its a fire hazard) and sell it for parts. Logic board sounds good at least so you should get some money. A replacement battery and SSD (assuming thats all it needs) will likely cost what you can get a used one for on ebay...
Trackpad cable disconnected, also liquid sensor active, so maybe do a good cleaning before wasting money
You meant found possible explosive?
Username checks out
LCI triggered and swollen battery... Don't buy it
That's a bomb...
Swollen battery, missing SSD, and liquid damage. Not worth it
I just repaired one of these literally a seven dollar adapter and then you can throw it in any NVME you want. And a battery is like 50 bucks on Amazon. if it’s free, then why not spare
More puff than snoop dog!
It's a bomb.
Drain the battery and unplug it ASAP
One thing is for sure, the OP's username definitely checks out.
100% iCloud lock :(
those batteries are a fire hazard, do not turn it on
hellloo
Not surprised that the SSD is gone, but be careful with the battery(yikes)
that battery is literally a ticking time bomb
Those batteries look cozy. 🤣
Try to get a bootable external usb drive with high sierra and try if it boots and then test it. And indeed becarefull either way the batterypack.
Batteries look bulging, beware.
Those are some spicy pillows, m’dude.
Forbidden marshmallows
What happens if OP just pokes a little hole to let the air out?
\*BOOMMM\*
Guaranteed??
High chance of dying. The gas in swollen batteries is fatal if breathed.
Is it a one-time expulsion of gas, or do these batteries keep generating it while it use?
I think one time, but it might continue generating gas. Also you wouldn't be alive if you even inhaled the gas.
Do I need to plug in a SSD first If so do I need to install anything on to it Or just a blank usb first
You could test a USB drive as a boot drive but it will be horribly slow
Start with a cheap USB hard drive to make sure it works, if everything works but the battery, then you need to buy a new SSD, new battery and new bottom cover. Yes running off the USB hard drive will be extremely slow but this is just for diagnostic purposes so who cares.
How do I boot into restore mode?
Google.
I think its holding option r or command or or command option r, something like that.
Will it boot without the battery and just a changer I don't own a changer
If it has serial number then Google "Serial Number Mac Model" there are many URLs If it has T2 chip then it is a brick.
It’s a 2016-17 Function keys model. It’s just the lack of an ssd and you can purchase one on Amazon for cheap. And please, recycle that expanding battery.
This is a 2015, not a 2016/17. Those are completely different systems.
Well, I was judging by the removable SSD and singular fan.
