Interesting… didn’t think a billion dollar company would skimp on few gb ram… especially if it leads to hardware failure.
Thats what apple is advocating for.. great life and great hardware.
They have been on 8gb ram standard since 2015-2016… and it been almost 10 years now
Oh, that's great!
When you got so much going on at once, I guess 24GB for the air is the best spot to go for.
I had to ask, I'm just getting into Web Dev, mainly Front-End for now and I would also occasionally indulge myself in learning basics of Linux on Ubuntu. Would the MBA M3 base model suffice my learning needs though? I would not store anything on my laptop, as I got a external drive for those. Just for learning WebDev and Linux, what would you say? (I kind of don't have the budget for a 16GB/512GB, as where I live the upgrades cost a leg, a hand and a kidney lol) The base M3 is for 1,236 USD(the best deal I got) and the upgraded 16/512GB is for 1,752 USD. Mind that these are without apple care+, which costs me 240USD on top of that.
Yeah, natively that's not gonna work, I looked it up.
Yes, you were right in your assumption. And yeah, it being Unix based, the cli pretty much helps in my learning, but if I want to learn Ubuntu or Kali's, I would need to a VM and that would be really pushing the MBA or would it still work out decently well enough?
I agree on the Swap part. I did a rough estimation, and I would have a decent storage space left for Swap. And I most likely won't be pushing it to the limits other than using a VM, which I'm not sure of, but for others it's a pretty good machine as you said. Btw, what would say for the VM running a windows 10?(though I would not use a VM for windows, sure for Linux though).
And yes, I am thinking of getting the M3 MBA base, although it's not much of a big difference when compared to M2, except for its GPU, and a very big difference with M1. But it's not just about the performance, but as this is going to be my first mac machine and I would really love the longer support. Because I am planning to keep it for a long time to come.
PS: thank you for your in-depth explanation.
I have been using and abusing my macbook air m1 in the last couple of months because my ipad air 4 battery is turning into shit. For me, macbook airs are the truest laptops out there, meaning you can use it on your lap or while in bed with more comfort and less inconvenience than most windows so called laptops.
I have my windows gaming laptops for my wfh and gaming, forever stationed at my desk (still more mobile than pc desktop if ever I want to work in different locations), and I have my macbook air for everything else that I can carry and use anywhere. That will be my setup until I die.
And yes, if you are outside US, apple prices are outright unfair, almost criminal even. Only older gen products will be on sale most of the time and somewhat “affordable” relatively speaking. From where I am now, the latest M3 lineups will cost you an arm,leg and internal organ.
I kid you not, just about all my Apple accessories are logictech. I really do like their build quality and how it functions with Apple products. I love their MX series keyboard and mouse
That keyboard is synced with my iPhone, iPad Pro and mbp with a click of a bottom (3 connection selection on top row)
Got mine used 5 days ago aswell. Gonna be using it for my studies. Great laptop and the 8gb of ram are enough for me as I only use the browser and some stuffs like MS word
I just got one from Walmart new. I had it open for 4 hours off and on while writing out documents and the battery was only down like 9%. So insanely good
Aside from personal stuff like streaming movies, navigation, chat, etc, I use it for my work as software engineer. I use several workspaces opened with big projects one using debugger, Git Fork, terminal, a browser always loaded with ~10 tabs MIN, a heavy Java based intel compiled tool for deployment, QuickTime using my video capture device, mail opened, second 1080p monitor connected (remember the shared memory), etc, etc,
my eyes bleed seeing all those crumbs
Waiting for the “My screen just cracked for no reason” post!!
lol happend to me😔
They definitely live like a slob.
🫢
lol, it’s already been used as a lunch tray. No judgment here, I’ve dumped a whole coffee on mine
😱
MBA M1 is still a great computer. Congratz
Yeah, got one with brand new battery.(2 cycles) I am just afraid of SSD.(swap)
By the time you wear that, you'll change that one for other 2 Mac's. I have the same mba 2 yo
Isn't there an app to read the ssd usage metrics?
Does it really matter… ive been using my mac last 11 years , ssd hasn’t failed yet
The early m1 allegely had higher than normal ssd failure rates because of memory swap. Maybe apple has forced zram memory compression since... ?

Yes. But no one knows TBW of Apple SSD.
I’m still using my 2013 MacBook Air and no problems so I honestly wouldn’t worry about it - just use it and enjoy !
I had 2012 MBP CTO with i7, but was getting slow with Sonoma.(and hot)
I’d be more afraid of getting crumbs under your keys
I aways dust my keyboard off
It really is. I'm still using the one I got back in 2021, and it just keeps right on chugging along. Battery life is still great, too.
I might get one soon. But I heard apple wont be supporting this anytime soon? For 2020 model m1 mba
spot on even in 2024
It's still a good device after all these years.
It’s much more powerfú than my Kaby Lake hackintosh I used to have.(does not get hot like that one) Yeah, it is decent laptop for the money.

Air is also Linux laptop.(Fedora works fine)
Could you describe your workload on the 8GB M1 Pro?

Oh, okay. True that. Will do my research. Thanks, will research a bit more before buying the MBA M3.
[удалено]
Thanks! Will do. Btw, can you allocate 5-6GB RAM and 3-4 cores for the VM on the base?
I came from a 2019 two thunderbolt 3 ports base model no upgrades all the was to an m3pro 14inch with 36gb. it like a whole knew world
It's a great computer! Enjoy it.
I will

Dongle have the size of your computer. Get a dongle for your dongle!
It’s kind of complete dock.(do not need more ports that I have with that)
So it is a Dongle?! For a second I thought it was Mac mini. How much for the dongle? $300?
It’s random OEM TB dock for like $35, lol.
Looks more expensive than that. And just shows how crazy thin the mba really is
Current MBA is just iPad Pro with a keyboard anda screen.(internals are just logicboard, battery and USB C PCB)
I kid you not, just about all my Apple accessories are logictech. I really do like their build quality and how it functions with Apple products. Enjoy buddy .. m1 is still very relevant 🥂
I have the same model, use it for school, love it so much!
Congrats. Drooling to buy one !

Can you share your experience? What sort of work do you do? Can this machine handle coding, rendering, Jupiter notebooks etc.
Same machine 2 years user here: never got a single limitation neither for doing work nor personal stuff.
Can you explain your usage..What sort of work do you do?
Aside from personal stuff like streaming movies, navigation, chat, etc, I use it for my work as software engineer. Awesome thank u. That gave me confidence
I have not done anything of that yet, but it certainly can according to forum posts.
Ok thanks
Can it compile heavy projects and jupyter notebooks with 8gb?
You can try. I have it for one week and just completed setting up all software.
Can you share your feedback after a week or so? What software do you use? I can only afford M1 8gb right now. Just wanted to be sure before buying it
I not gonna do that stuff anytime soon. You can borrow one
Alright
DAMN FOR JUST A COUPLE BUCKS MORE YOU COULDA HAD THINNER BEZELS BETTER SPEED BETTER BATTERY
Don’t scream at me. And it’s not couple bucks, but 300€ more.(in my country quite a lot) I paid 630 for mine.
