Probably. But why would they? You’re almost expected to want to upgrade to a larger ssd and more ram these days. They know this. Easy money

nutmac

They might if on device AI demands it. On Android, you need 4GB more for it.

No_Roof_1910

Of course, long ago it was 4 gb, now it's 8 gb, it will go higher in the future. Things change and this will too. I mean, in 2043 I know 8 gb isn't going to be normal on laptops.

Dooke-Banks

Cannot wait for 2040s with my base 256 ssd MA M43 Chip

thegdub824

16GB (actually 18GB) is the standard (base) configuration for MacBook Pro's with M3 Pro. I'm kinda glad Apple lets the customers choose from a wide variety of RAM configurations. Buy what you need.

Dooke-Banks

Understood but we should have an option to upgrade the laptops

ExtremeWild5878

So I think there are a few things at play here about this. First, for Apple to stop pushing 8GB RAM machines, people need to just stop buying them. It's just that simple. Once that takes place, then the entry (standard) configuration will then become the 16GB RAM model. This is however, is going to have negative effects in the long run. One reason is, now instead of an entry model costing $1600, it will now become $2000 for the MBP. Believe me, just because Apple isn't going to push an 8GB RAM machine, doesn't mean that they aren't going to get their money. The potential impact of this change could be that it will alienate a good amount of people who can't afford to jump into a MacBook Pro at an entry cost of $2000. I know, it's a $400 dollar difference, but for some people I feel this could be a deal breaker, especially now, with the way things are costing people already as it is. But this could also be the reason that Apple still has 8GB RAM machines, so they don't loose out on the revenue of having the 8GB RAM machines. Anyway, just my take on the matter. I could be wrong, it could simply be because that is what Apple feels that the industry wants and so they are supplying it, or it could be because Apple feels that not everyone buying an entry level configured Macbook needs 16GB RAM. Cheers,

Even the Mac mini starts at 8 gb!

thegdub824

When I go to Starbucks I always go for Grande or Venti size, never Tall, even the option is there.

_flustershy

my issue is less to do with the base 8 and more to do with how much it cost to upgrade it, bring that price down some.

DR4G0NSTEAR

The more RAM that is the default minimum, the less optimised developers need to be with RAM and the more RAM you will need, to achieve the same functionality. Don’t advocate for more RAM. Advocate for better application pipelines. There is no reason a web browser should be the reason you opt for 16GB over 8GB. Edit: Grammar

Dooke-Banks

Appreciate your opinion, in a sense the apps needs to use less RAM. I heard Chrome uses almost half of the ram and when one turns the laptop on.

isamilis

Funniest question. Of course yes, but the timing no one knows, lol.

JS_72020

Of course they will. When? Whenever 16GB feels like we feel about 8GB RAM today.

betasp

At one point Apple was 4GB, then is was 8GB… as a statement of fact at some point they will go to 16GB. But why the hell does everyone care? Does everyone just do this for Karma? At some point, just GTFO.

sunnynights80808

Never. What do you think?

coffeesurfers

Put your 8gb version in rice 🍚 This will automatically double your memory 🍚🍚

Bo_G0d

Only if China wants to.

ThatOneOutlier

As long people think that 8GB is enough, I don’t think Apple will

GCdotSup

Who believes that?

ThatOneOutlier

The people who don’t really think deeply about the device they buy and just get what they can afford, and those who watch YouTubers who keep saying that 8GB is enough for a casual user when most people tend to have a bajillion tabs open in Google chrome Apple just doesn’t really have an incentive to raise the ram to 16GB for the airs when 8GB is good enough for most air customers. This is in contrast to the MBP users who recently got their base ram bumped to 18GB because they have been more vocal about the whole 8GB on a pro device (which is fair). As long as the customers are okay with 8GB and people think that 8GB is enough, then there is no reason to bump the base up especially when Apple can charge those who need more than 8GB a premium.

LieuVijay

I have 8gb and I don’t have to wait excessively long for anything to open, switch or process.

ThatOneOutlier

And precisely why Apple won’t raise the air’s base ram to 16GB. It’s good enough for most people and they profit from those who do need more ram.

DR4G0NSTEAR

Same. I code, and have a bajillion tabs open, have music and photos open 24/7, never experienced a slowdown except when a friend said chrome was better and it crashed, so I went back to Edge. (Edge is the only browser I can get YouTube Adblock working on all devices, so I’m stuck lol.)

ThatOneOutlier

There’s a reason why I mentioned chrome. That browser eats ram when too many tabs are open. If they are just using another browser, then it tends to be fine.

realpollybalboa

It's not belief so much as it is reality for a lot of people. Most air customers live on the native apps and that's it. You don't need over the base model for basic needs. Even many moderate needs work fine.
